Harold Bronson in conversation with David Eastaugh https://mogandavidandhiswinos.bandcamp.com/album/savage-young-winos Out of circulation since 1976, the recordings of the Los Angeles rock band Mogan David and His Winos is finally be available again. The group's lineup featured a 'who's who' of heavyweights in the American music industry, including Harold Bronson and Richard Foos (co-founders of Rhino Records), Paul Rappaport (Columbia Records), and Mark Leviton (Rhino/Warner Music Group). Additionally, the band included Jonathan Kellerman, a New York Times bestselling author known for his series of novels starring the fictional child psychologist Alex Delaware. Started in high school by Bronson, a music-obsessed Los Angeles native, the Winos' band name was derived from Westfield, New York's Mogen David Wine Company, inspired by those crazy band names from the psychedelic era, such as Jefferson Airplane and Strawberry Alarm Clock.

Bill Graham and Sid Bernstein were two of the greatest and most important rock music promoters of the 1960s. Bill Graham had two legendary theaters, the Fillmore West in San Francisco and the Fillmore East in New York City. He introduced and cultivated so many of the major stars of the era including Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, and the Grateful Dead on the west coast, and Blood Sweat & Tears, the Allman Brothers and The Band on the east coast.Sid Bernstein was the promoter who was responsible for The Beatles performing at Shea Stadium in New York City in 1965. He also brought the Stones, the Kinks, the Moody Blues and Herman's Hermits to America. Without Bill Graham and Sid Bernstein there would not have been rock concerts as we know them today.—-----------------------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!Click here for All Episodes Click here for Guest List Click here for Guest Groupings Click here for Guest TestimonialsClick here to Subscribe Click here to receive our Email UpdatesClick here to Rate and Review the podcast—----------------------------------------ROBERT'S LATEST RELEASE:“MA PETITE FLEUR STRING QUARTET” is Robert's latest release. I'm so excited to kick off Season 6 of Roadcase with Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, the one and only Jorma Kaukonen!! Jorma was a true pioneer of the counter-culture era of psychedelic rock in the late 60s San Francisco music scene, and having him on the show is particularly relevant as we sadly just lost another music icon, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. I spoke to Jorma in November, thus prior to recent events, and he talked to me about his time in the early days in Palo Alto and Haight Asbury in San Francisco, the founding of Jefferson Airplane and his deep love of blues guitar. Jorma also spoke to me about his reflections on touring, and the historic shows of that period in music, having been one of the few artists to play all three landmark festivals, Monterey Pop, Woodstock and Altamont.Jorma is intellectually curious — a lifelong learner — with a diverse cultural background of both Jewish and Finnish heritage, and having grown up in Pakistan, didn't really learn of the burgeoning modern rock music wave, as it were, until his arrival in the States in 1955. This is a fascinating conversation with a true musical icon of amazing sensibility with a deep historical perspective and tons of mind-blowing stories!! =======================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
This week on No Simple Road, we sit down with a true living legend — Jorma Kaukonen. Guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Jorma joins Aaron, Mel, and Apple for a deep, thoughtful conversation that traces a lifetime devoted to music, meaning, and staying true to the song. We talk about the early days of acoustic blues, the electric explosion of San Francisco, and how curiosity and discipline shaped Jorma's unmistakable voice on the guitar. He reflects on the evolution of American roots music, the difference between technique and feel, and the importance of listening — to the music, to each other, and to the moment. Jorma opens up about the long road of creation, the lessons learned from decades of performing, and the role of mentorship and teaching through the Fur Peace Ranch. We explore what it means to age with grace as an artist, how to keep learning, and why authenticity still matters more than ever in a fast-moving musical world. This conversation is rich with stories, wisdom, and quiet insight — a reminder that music isn't about chasing the spotlight, but about honoring the path, the craft, and the community that forms along the way. If you love roots music, blues, folk, psychedelic rock, or simply hearing from artists who've lived the music with intention, this episode is a must-listen.
Stu Levitan welcomes back to the program Doug Bradley to discuss his new book The Tracks of My Years: A Music-Based Memoir, just out from the good people at Legacy Book Press. And it is exactly what the subtitle promises – Doug recounting the literal soundtrack of his life, putting the seminal events of his first quarter century or so in the context of the music that accompanied, or symbolized, those events. And since most of the events recounted took place in the sixties and seventies, it's a pretty great 46-song setlist, which you can find on Spotify. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SiTq5A3GboxJ4uTNdMGJ1 Doug spent his early childhood in Philadelphia with his parents and older doo-wop singing brother, in a house filled with music. The family moved to Ohio for two years, then the Pittsburg suburb of Clairton, where Doug graduated from Thomas Jefferson HS in 1965, doing some party DJ work along the way, thanks to his brother's record collection. He was admitted to Notre Dame but couldn't afford the tuition; as a scholarship student to Bethany College in Bethany WV, Class of '69, he was a Big Man on Campus as two-term chairman of the Social Committee , booking a lot of major pop acts. That's how he came to share a joint with the Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and a drink with jazz legend Count Basie, play some pick-up hoops with Smokey Robinson's Miracles, and hold Dionne Warwick's hand on a tragic night in American history. He was drafted into the US Army in March 1970 and fortunately for him aced the job aptitude test and so was made an Army journalist, first domestically and then in 1970-71 at the Army's Vietnam HQ in Long Binh. After his honorable discharge, he finally acceded to the entreaties of his high school mentor – whose interest in Doug may have been more that academic – and he received an MA in English from Washington State University in 1972. He also acceded to the entreaties of his wife, Pam Shannon, and relocated to Madison in 1974, where he was one of the first employees and later president of the community-based service center Vet's House, which helped him work through some of his postwar issues. Pam also got him to appreciate the Grateful Dead, which gives her bonus points. Never a student at the UW, he spent more than 30 years in various communications and marketing positions there, including 15 years as director of public information at UW Extension, where his father-in-law Ted Shannon was a top administrator. He also for many years co-taught with his co-author Prof. Craig Werner a course based on their award-winning book “We Gotta Get Out of this Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War.” Doug later continued the theme, writing Who'll Stop The Rain: Respect, Remembrance and Reconciliation in post-Vietnam America, both books the subject of a BookBeat episode in February 2020. It's a pleasure to welcome back to Madison BookBeat the 2025 recipient of the Vietnam Veterans of America's Excellence in Arts Award, Doug Bradley
In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, host Scott Dudelson sits down with singer-songwriter Lee Michaels, writer/performer of the 1971 hit “Do You Know What I Mean.” Beyond that blue-eyed soul classic, Michaels built one of the most unconventional careers in music history. A bona fide late-'60s/early-'70s rockstar, Michaels sold out major venues, scored chart success, jammed with Jimi Hendrix, shared bills with Led Zeppelin, and played a key role in the development of the San Francisco scene alongside bands like Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape. Burned out creatively, he walked away from the industry in the mid-'70s and reinvented himself—finding new success as a world class boxing manager, restaurateur and AI innovator, with stories from these times just as wild as his music years. Cameron Crowe devotes a full chapter to Michaels in The Uncool; this conversation digs deeper into a singular, surprising legacy that Crowe praised so heavily in his book. This episode contains personal stories and recollections shared by Lee Michaels and the views and accounts are based on his own historical remembrances. Approaching 85 years old, guitarist Jorma Kaukonen talks about the early '60s onward — from the beginnings of Jefferson Airplane to his current solo career, including his new archival 2-LP live album, Wabash Avenue (out on Record Store Day Black Friday). Wabash Avenue is a special release, highlighting unheard songs at a solo acoustic performance in 1965 (before Kaukonen joined the Jefferson Airplane) at The Offstage, a folk club in San Jose, California. Guest host, longtime Goldmine contributor Lee Zimmerman, interviewed a vibrant Kaukonen about other subjects, too: Woodstock and Summer of Love memories, the essence of Hot Tuna (w/ former Jefferson Airplane member Jack Casady) and the guitar school of the Fur Peace Ranch, started by Kaukonen and his wife, Vanessa. "The Very Day" If you're wondering if the Connecticut-born Grammyt Award winning keyboardist and composer grew up with music in the house, the answer is yes--his father Joe Porcaro was a renowned jazz drummer who played with everyone from Sinatra to Stan Getz to Madonna. He also played on hundreds of film and television scores including The Wild Bunch, I Dream Of Jeannie and Edward Scissorhands. He also founded the Percussion Institute of Technology and later the drum department at the Los Angeles Music Academy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_College_of_Music). So, yeah music was the lifesblood of the Porcaro household and at very young ages, Steve and his brothers Mike and Jeff went into the family business. How early of an age you might be wondering? Well, at 17 when most of us were finishing our last year of high school and thinking about who and who wouldn't go with us to the prom, Steve was playing with Gary Wright's band on his 1976 Dream Weaver tour. A year later while most of us were fumbling our way through our first year of college, Steve and his brothers were in Boz Scaggs's band. In 1978 Steve and his brother Jeff along with a few other session playing pals formed their own band called Toto. How'd that work out? Well, 50 million albums later, I'd say it worked out very well, thank you. From "Hold The Line" to "Rosanna" to "Africa" Toto had a procession of hits, became one of the biggest bands on the planet and went on to compose the music for David Lynch's Dune. Steve left the fold in 1987 and went on to compose and score for countless film and television projects, including From Dusk Til Dawn 2, Eddie Murphy's Metro and he did all the original music for Justified. This is just a partial list, by the way--he also wrote the song "Human Nature" which Michael Jackson recorded on his Thriller album, the beginning of several compositions he wrote for Jackson to record. Considered one of the pioneers of analog synths, Porcaro's inventive loops appeared on works by everyone from Elton John to Don Henley. When it comes to artists he's collaborated with, here's a list that's going to knock you out: Hall and Oates, Earth Wind and Fire, Sheena Easton, Diana Ross, Warren Zevon, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, and Michael McDonald. Also a partial list. And speaking of Yes, Porcaro was good friends with Yes's Chris Squire and played in his band The Chris Squire Experiment. Porcaro's second solo album The Very Day is one of 2025's real bright spots. Featuring guest appearances by Stan Lynch, Jude Cole, Michael McDonald, Gardner Cole and his Toto pal David Paich, The Very Day is a stirring song cycle of effortless pop melodies, rootsy grooves and insanely catchy hooks. It's pure magic. And this conversation felt the same. Steve's an open book and a lovely guy and I can't wait for you to meet him, www.steveporcaromusic.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereo) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

The Blues Magoos Peppy Castro Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson There's fun, and then there's spending two hours with The Blues Magoos Peppy Castro! He's lived a rockers' life to covet and then some! The Who, Hendrix, Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, JOHN LENNON for Gd's sake! Stories, stories, stories, one better than the next. He drove a Beatle in a Beetle! Who can say that? Skipping school and playing the Night Owl in the village when he was 14. 14! When Jimi used to stop in and jam, when Bob would roam the streets with his guitar, when Richie Havens would just wander in… doing the Jack Benny Show with Henny Youngman and Morey Amsterdam firing schtick in the green room, doing The Smother's Brother's Comedy Hour with Tommy trying to join the band, touring with The Who and Herman's Hermits and The Who were the middle act! An insane story about Micheal Botlon, about getting the role in the original production of Hair on Broadway, doing jingle after jingle - with one I'm still singing… we talked Phoebe Snow, Laura Branigan, Buzzy Linhardt, Jay & The Americans, The Turtles with beloved Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, Tommy James, Lou Cristie, Joan Jett, on and on, and on! FAB! FAB! FAB! Forty years in the making - we could've screamed across the street at each other in the 80s. I did visit his penthouse once, but thought it was elsewhere. There may or may not have been a lotta pot involved. The antidote to today's latest crazy… this thing right here. Just hit play. It's the joy button. Promise! In 1968 while Joplin, Hendrix, the Doors and Jefferson Airplane were singing about sex, drugs and rock ‘n' roll, Bobby Goldsboro was singing about “Honey.” After a career in which he sold more than 35 million records, hosted a national TV show, wrote six best-selling children's books and produced a national PBS show, you'd think the almost 85 year old Goldsboro would be winding down. Think again.Bobby Goldsboro was born in the small town of Marianna, Florida. Growing up in a modest setting, he discovered a love for music at an early age. By the time he was a teenager, he was already playing guitar and dreaming about a life in the spotlight. After high school, Bobby attended University but quickly found himself drawn more to music than academics. That passion led him to join a band called The Webs—the first real stepping stone to his career. The Webs were talented enough to catch the attention of rock legend Roy Orbison. In 1962, Orbison invited the band to back him on tour. Bobby suddenly found himself on the road with one of the most iconic voices in rock history, gaining invaluable experience. For two years, he traveled the world with Orbison, honing his skills and learning the ins and outs of the music business. In 1964, Bobby launched his solo career, and his very first single, “See the Funny Little Clown,” became a hit. The song shot into the Top 10 and introduced his unique, heartfelt vocal style to the world. More singles followed that proved he wasn't a one-hit wonder. Everything changed in 1968 with the release of “Honey.” The emotional ballad tells the story of a man grieving the loss of his wife. Goldsboro's tender delivery turned it into a cultural phenomenon. The song spent five weeks at No. 1 and became one of the decade's best-selling singles, topping charts worldwide. Love it or find it schmultzy “Honey” defined Bobby Goldsboro's career and remains his signature song.Though “Honey” was his biggest success, Bobby continued to deliver memorable music. Songs like “Summer (The First Time)” and “Watching Scotty Grow” touched audiences everywhere. Bobby's tracks showcased his versatility, blending country, pop, and folk influences while always keeping the storytelling front and centre.During the '70s, Bobby expanded his career beyond the recording studio. He became the host of The Bobby Goldsboro Show, a syndicated musical variety program that ran for several years. It highlighted his warmth, charm, and sense of humour—qualities that endeared him to audiences far beyond his music. As the '80s rolled in, Bobby gradually stepped away from the spotlight of hit records and touring. But creativity still flowed. He turned his attention to painting, creating detailed wildlife and landscape art that quickly gained recognition. Collectors admired his work, and he established himself as a respected visual artist. He also ventured into children's programming, producing the animated series The Swamp Critters of Lost Lagoon. What makes Bobby Goldsboro special is the emotional connection he forges with his audience. He has a rare ability to capture universal feelings in simple, beautiful ways. His soft, vulnerable voice made listeners feel like he was singing directly to them, a gift that explains why his songs have endured for so long.Today, Bobby Goldsboro may no longer dominate the charts, but his influence is undeniable. He continues to paint, create, and inspire, while fans old and new revisit his music with appreciation. His career is a reminder that creativity comes in many forms and that an artist's legacy isn't defined by a single moment, but by a lifetime of work.Tune in to hear Bobby relive the story of his career and let him take you back to your youth, to a time when his songs dominated the charts. Please reach out to me with any comments or feedback through the website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au
