Although they cater to different senses, photography and music share much in common. In both these arts, timing, rhythm, and mood are key. It's been a while since we've mixed photography and music on the show, so we're particularly excited about today's chat with two photographers who share a passion for documenting musicians and their fans—in particular, devotes of punk and indie rock. From early memories of being truly moved by music to practical tips about photo access, image rights and restrictions, plus the complexities of organizing your work for a book, the conversation doesn't miss a beat. So, turn up the volume as Bootsy Holler reminisces about dropping into the Seattle music scene in the early 1990's to capture the raw energy of her favorite bands, now compiled in the book Making It: An Intimate Documentary about the Seattle Indie, Rock and Punk Scene. And Chris Ortiz describes how the house parties he captured at a punk commune in Kansas served as the foundation for his skills as a music photographer with a keen eye for differentiating himself in the photo pit. As Chris points out when it comes to preparing for a show. "It goes back to knowing that music and knowing the band, and being able to sit back and say, Yes, I am a fan of the band, but I also am professional, so this is what I'm going to look for when the band comes out." For episode 128, I spoke with the brilliant Mdou Moctar, a Tuareg singer, guitarist and songwriter whose sound combines rock, blues and contemporary Saharan music into songs that range from shreddy and electrifying to beautiful and contemplative, and all the stops in between. I highly recommend digging into his catalog, which is now several albums deep. His latest releases with his band were a pair of interconnected albums: 2024's Funeral For Justice, which is of the fiery rock & roll variety, and Tears of Injustice, which was released this year and features acoustic versions of the same songs — gorgeous renditions whose sound harkens back to the more sparse style Mdou employed on his early albums, before he had a full band supporting him. During the summer, I connected over Zoom with both Mdou and his bassist, Mikey Coltun, who also produces their albums, and that is the main interview in this episode. But I also had the pleasure of meeting up with the band in person, following our Zoom, to moderate an event they did at LA's Grammy Museum. The Grammy Museum is an awesome non-profit that, in addition to preserving the history of the Grammy Awards and offering very cool interactive exhibits, also presents a series of live events where incredible artists like Mdou Moctar give talks and stripped-down performances for truly intimate audiences. Big thanks to Kimber Kristy over there for allowing me to use some of the audio from that conversation in this episode, because there were a couple of moments from it that I wanted to share. So we'll listen to a bit of that, and then get into the longer interview.

Lakeridge High School senior Elaina Stuppler is no stranger to the spotlight. She performs in the Portland Youth Philharmonic, playing trombone - but she also plays tuba, piano and composes music as well. She’s regularly featured on All Classical Radio as a reporter and Artist in Residence. But the last few months have been a veritable cavalcade of honors and opportunities. Stuppler won the Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge. Her winning composition, about the life of Maria Anna Mozart, was performed  by Broadway musicians and singers in New York this summer. She was just one of five students in the U.S. chosen by the Grammy Museum for its summer screen scoring program in LA. She is also a winner of the prestigious YoungArts Award with Distinction, Stuppler joins us to share some of her compositions, and tell us about what these honors mean to her and what opportunities they may open up for her future.

In this episode of 92NY talks, The GRAMMY Museum and 92NY present Ingrid Michaelson with ELLE Magazine's Samuel Maude for an intimate conversation about her album For the Dreamers, composing music for The Notebook, her creative process, and more, followed by a performance. Hermanos Gutierrez is a band formed of the brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez, based in Switzerland, who make instrumental music that looks to mid-century Mexican popular song, draws on the sounds of 60s surf guitar and the nocturnal landscapes of ambient music. Their 2022 album, El Bueno Y El Malo  (The Good & The Bad) was definitely a nod to the Ennio Morricone soundtracks for those old spaghetti westerns, like The Good The Bad & The Ugly . Their 2024 release Sonido C​ó​smico looks to the desert for their spacious and spiritual fingerpicking, with one of the tracks specifically taking its inspiration from the Wim Wenders film, Paris, Texas. They play songs from their latest, Sonido C​ó​smico, in a special event, recorded at the GRAMMY Museum's “A New York Evening With" at National Sawdust this past fall. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Musician and writer Mike Errico joins Rhett to talk about guitars, finding his voice as a musician, and his latest release, 'Shine', which represents a shift towards more positive and uplifting music. Rhett and Mike break down the songwriting approach of artists like Taylor Swift and Max Martin, the role of teaching, and the importance of laughter in the creative process. New York-based recording artist, writer, and lecturing professor Mike Errico has built his name on the strength of critically acclaimed releases and extensive composition for film and TV. He teaches songwriting at universities including Yale, Wesleyan, the New School, and NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. He was nominated for 2019's David Payne-Carter Award for Excellence in Teaching, and taught the 2022 GRAMMY® Museum's inaugural Summer Sessions in New York City. In addition to his performing and teaching careers, Errico's opinions and insights have appeared in publications including The New York Times, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and many others.
