There's an echo in the well of Americana and it reverberates from tradition and some of the early songsmiths and blues masters who delivered the blues proper through the depths of the past century of America's music. We'll be pulling some of the classic blues covers of songs composed by just a small collection of the great blues masters: Charley Patton, Muddy Waters, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Blake and beyond in this week's episode. There is seldom enough time to make a dent in only two hours but we'll do our best with covers from some of the inheritors like BB King, Carl Perkins, Bob Dylan, Jorma Kaukonen and a couple dozen others. We're excavating some deeper roots this week and then tilling the airwaves with freshly turned songs of the earth; a landscape of blues cutting a deep swath across the musical landscape of the past 100 years. Celebrating blues and those who brought it home this week on KOWS Community Radio.
O espaço intitulado “Atacama Blues” vai, como o nome sugere, ocupar o território musical dos blues e os seus afluentes. Todas as semanas uma nova sugestão. Com André Gonçalves

Episode 310: It would be hard to name any songwriter in Nashville's long history whose work has been recorded by more stars across more genres of music than Gary Nicholson. The Texas native came to Nashville in 1980 after stints in Ft. Worth and Los Angeles, and not only did he amass an impressive string of country music hits with Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, and more, he became Music City's go-to soul and R&B man, conjuring songs for Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, BB King, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and even Ringo Starr. Now at 74 the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer has turned his own performing/recording life to songs of conscience and social protest, as on his new album Common Sense.

There's no disputing the influence B.B. King has had on the history of electric guitar music. With Lucille in hand—as well as other guitars—he carved out his sound by developing a signature one-of-a-kind vibrato and pick attack. His note choice, phrasing, and feel have basically become the fundamental vocabulary of electric blues. Even more than any other of his blues peers, his playing shaped blues and rock guitar. And that's not to mention his singing. So, on this episode of 100 Guitarists, we're celebrating the King. We're talking about his sound, his best records, his guitars, his showmanship, and his collabs, from an all-star jam at the 2010 Crossroads festival to, yes, even his 1988 U2 collab, “When Love Comes to Town.”In our current listening segment, we're talking about Brian John McBrearty's recent meditation-jazz release Remembering Repeating and Julian Lage's latest, Apple Music Nashville Sessions.Brought to you by Gibson Guitars: http://gibson.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Grace Bowers grew up in Northern California, but when she was not quite 15 years old, her parents decided to move the family to Nashville for better schools and a different kind of life. At first, the culture shock was too much for her, but as Grace became more and more serious about the guitar, she found a music community that recognized her incredible talent—and took her in. Now, at just 18, she and her band, The Hodge Podge, have a new funk and soul-inspired album called Wine on Venus, a title inspired by Grace's grandmother, who passed away not long ago at the age of 100. The album's producer is John Osborne, from the Brothers Osborne, who's become a friend and mentor as she navigates her abrupt rise to stardom. Sid talks to Grace about how BB King sparked a passion for music, her obsession with Sly and the Family Stone, her honest feelings about hot chicken, and much more. Nolia Noon, an emerging indie rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, draws from a rich palette of influences, spanning the soulful storytelling of Johnny Cash and BB King to the raw energy of Nirvana and Oasis. Formed in 2021, the group initially experimented with different names and lineups before solidifying its identity in July 2022 with its current members: drummer Nick Beach, bassist John Roach, and singer/guitarist Jared Foos. In their debut year, Nolia Noon introduced themselves to the music scene with several singles, including "Roses" released in July 2022. These 2022 tracks quickly garnered attention, with "Roses" earning airplay on Louisville's esteemed 91.9 WFPK and a spotlight feature on the station's website. The band followed up with a music video for "Roses" in September, adding a visual element to their evocative sound. They continued releasing singles in 2023, along with the EP "Holeboy". The name “Nolia Noon” carries a mysterious backstory. While brainstorming, Jared and John landed on the moniker after tweaking the phrase "Magnolia Moon" into something unique. However, an eerie coincidence emerged when they discovered that a woman named Nolia Noon, born on July 4, 1880, and buried in Louisville's Cave Hill Cemetery, shared the name. The connection deepened when they realized lyrics from their song "Love Yourself" referenced the same date, a detail that predated their name choice. Nolia Noon's journey so far includes performances across Louisville's vibrant venues and a headlining slot at a Centre College music festival in Danville, Kentucky, where both Jared and John studied. The band's blend of soulful roots and 90s grunge sensibilities, combined with their organic chemistry, has positioned them as a group to watch. Elvis Presley loved the Memphis singer Johnny Ace. Johnny died long before Elvis' became the King of Rock ‘N' Roll and the way in which Johnny Ace died was as tragic as it was violent. It involved a game of Russian roulette, a greedy and dubious rock ‘n' roll impresario, BB King, Big Mama Thornton, Little Richard, and a killer conspiracy and music history myth in desperate need of busting. Buckle up for a Christmas story like no other. What are your favorite rock 'n' roll myths? Which ones need busting? The music festival promoters hustle hard to secure a plane to Zaire. Finally on board, all the artists are nearly killed by James Brown and his oversized ego. Despite the high drama, the flight is a magical experience for all aboard when the musicians turn the plane into an epic jam session. This shared joy carries the crew through to Zaire. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the drums and voices of The Motherland. Meanwhile, fight promoters scramble to rearrange the weekend after Foreman’s cut and, in doing so, find out who President Mobutu really is. One of the most influential bands in American music history performs Dec. 7 at Key West Theater. The Kingston Trio, a legacy band that carries the torch for one of the most influential musical movements in modern history, blending calypso, folk, bluegrass and rock themes into the Americana mainstream, performs Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Key West Theater.Keys Weekly's Britt Myers and Mandy Miles catch up with the trio for the latest episode of the Florida Keys Weekly podcast. They discuss the band's historic feats of record-breaking hits and album sales; the Beatles opening for the trio and their influence on Bob Dylan and the folk revival of the early '60s. Many argue the Kingston Trio transformed modern American music alongside pioneers such as Elvis Presley, BB King and The Beach Boys — blending sounds and genres that forever changed how music was performed and marketed. Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward represent the group today, performing hits like “Tom Dooley” and "MTA" while reminiscing with nostalgic stories of growing up around the original trio. Don't miss the podcast, which drops some breaking news (spoiler alert) on a potential upcoming Netflix miniseries on the Kingston Trio. In the wake of the Attica Prison Uprising, BB King performs for the prisoners at Sing Sing Prison in 1972. The Thanksgiving Day concert sparks a new conversation about prisoner rights. Documentarian Daivd Hoffman recalls his time behind the camera, watching BB King perform, and how he softened the hearts of otherwise life-hardened men.
