When you add to that Jay serving up some of the best soloing of his already stellar career, you know this is going to be one heck of a listen. It's a big milestone this week. We've hit show 800, and I've decided to do something a bit different. No themes, no guest takeovers, just a selection of music that means the world to me. These are the tracks that move me, the ones I find important, and the ones that remind me why I started this show in the first place. We're kicking off with the absolute masters of the pocket, The Meters, and keeping that heavy groove alive with Blues is Truth, Karena K, and Paul Michael. This episode feels personal because it is—we're traveling from the delta grit of Leadbelly to the singular genius of Tom Waits, through to the West London soul of Robert Hokum and the Guv'nors and The Geoff Garbow Band. I've made sure the heavyweights are present too. You'll hear Freddie King, BB King, and Buddy Guy showing us how it's done, alongside the pure fire of Derek and the Dominos and Nick Curran. There is space for the deep, soulful moments from Percy Sledge and the early magic of Fleetwood Mac, while Rob Millis, Yuri Apsy, and Bruce Mississippi Johnson keep the story moving forward. We're also checking in with The Steady Rollin' Revue, the funk-infused mastery of John Cleary, and the legendary Sly and the Family Stone. It's a real journey through the sounds that have shaped my ears over the years. It's show 800. It's special. And more than anything, it's the truth.

The latest Blues is the Truth is live and this week we're shifting gears. There are no awards or trophies this time around, just a deep dive into the kind of music that keeps the pulse of this scene beating. We've got a massive lineup that spans the full spectrum of the craft. You'll hear the raw energy of The Milkmen, The South Island Rhythm Kings, and The Paul Michael Band alongside the world class talent of Geoff Achison and harmonica ace Giles Robson. The vibe stays heavy and authentic with tracks from John Cee Stannard, Tom Waits For No Man, and the effortlessly cool Stray Cat Willy and the Strays. We're also honoring the storytellers and the technicians like Michael Messer, Half Deaf Clatch, and the Geoff Garbow Band. And because we always respect the lineage, we've brought the giants into the room. BB King, Freddie King, Mike Bloomfield, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are all here to remind us why we fell in love with this music in the first place. From the modern fire of Samantha Fish and Alice Armstrong to the deep pocket grooves of Willie Buck and Bob Corritore, Dave Specter, and The Steady Rollin' Revue, there isn't a wasted second. Rounding it all out with the Backyard Casanovas, Kilborn Alley, Mighty Mike Schermer, and Charlie and the Fez Kings, it's an hour of music that flows perfectly from one story to the next. It's a masterclass in why the blues is and always will be the truth.

The Bandwich Tapes

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years. From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together. We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. In 1964, Lorey Kaye, a twenty-year-old from New Haven, CT, moved to Manhattan to start a new life in the big city. Lorey was a fresh-faced, dark-haired hippie, who attracted attention as much for her headstrong, determined, street smart attitude as for her striking good looks. She was hired as a waitress in a new nightclub that had just opened in Times Square – called Steve Paul’s ‘The Scene'. The club was an immediate hit with gigs by the likes of BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and Sammy Davis Jr., regular visitors like Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick – and Lorey was at the heart of the action. Another group, The Lovin’ Spoonful, also played there regularly, and their lead singer, John Sebastian, took a shine to her. John and Lorey started seeing each other, and Lorey became his muse, inspiring him to compose a number of the group's hit singles about her, such as ‘She's A Lady' and ‘Rain on the Roof', even mentioning her by name in some of the lyrics. Lorey and John Sebastian (1967) They got hitched in 1966 – by then Lorey had started work as an insider gossip columnist at Hit Parade magazine – and now known as Lorey Sebastian, she became a popular staple in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk-rock music scene. Lorey and John's relationship was glamorous, high-profile, and short-lived. Lorey broke up with John in 1968 when they were in Ireland. The legend is that she fell in with a group of gypsies, and felt compelled to tune in, drop out, and join them instead. It was said that John never fully recovered from the breakup. Lorey (right), with John Sebastian and Mama Cass (1967) Fast forward to the mid 1970s. Lorey was back in New York, now in her mid 30s and looking for a purpose. She'd become a member of the television and film workers union, with the vague ambition of being a still photographer on movie sets. To make a little extra money, she also did work as a crew member on sex films. It was on a Gerry Damiano movie that she met Jamie Gillis. Jamie sidled up to her, pushing her in the back, and exclaiming, “What a place to bump into a girl like you!” It was corny but it worked, and Lorey invited him back to her place. The mutual attraction was instant and sexual – but, for Jamie, there was something more this time. For a confirmed promiscuous bachelor, Jamie confided to friends that, whisper it quietly, Lorey might actually be the one. He spent time with her, encouraged her photography ambitions, taking her to exhibitions and galleries, and was tickled that one of his favorite songs, The Lovin’ Spoonful's ‘Daydream,' had been written for her. Not to suggest that Jamie's relationship with New York magazine's Insatiable Critic, Gael Greene, was over. Far from it. Even if the novelty of Jamie and Gael's physical and emotional relationship had subsided, they were still intent on documenting their lives, in and out of bed, for a proposed joint-autobiographical book. They continued to go the city's restaurants, cultural events, and glamorous parties, while Jamie spent his in-between time wrestling with whether he wanted an acting career, playing poker, going to the occasional audition, and making semi-regular starring appearances in adult films. In short, Jamie wanted to pursue Lorey, but not give up the affair with Gael. This is Part 2 of the story of Jamie Gillis and Gael Greene in 1978. Jamie This podcast is 49 minutes long. Power often rides in the backseat, and Joe Washington has spent years at the wheel. We kick off season three with the trusted driver behind Northwest Arkansas's most intriguing routes, funded early by Don Tyson, introduced to Alice Walton as “my friend Joe,” and frequently answering calls that start with “President for Don Tyson.” Joe shares how a simple code, safety first, discretion always, turned an ordinary service into a career that spans yachts in Italy, private airport pickups, and late-night runs for A-list guests. We unpack the origin of NWA Transportation, the moment Don and attorney Kenneth Morton helped Joe get started, and the everyday discipline that made the relationship last for more than a decade. Joe takes us inside bucket-list drives down Don Tyson Parkway and across Walmart campus, then into surreal phone moments with Clinton, BB King, and other legends. He explains why he's not “ride share,” how bookings from coastal agencies land in his inbox, and how a full-evening model beats point A to B when clients value privacy, flexibility, and calm. The conversation stretches into culture and craft, why a bottle of Creed becomes a calling card, how a sleek black Escalade branded with Team Direct and the emerging Platform identity turns heads without shouting, and what it takes to manage luxury logistics without breaking the trust that earns them. Golf fans will lean in at stories of John Daly, a polite pass on Augusta for its no-cart rule, and a respectful glimpse of Michael Jordan's high-stakes club life. It's a story about Bentonville's gravity, Walmart's orbit, and the quiet professionals who keep both moving. If you love behind-the-scenes business, service excellence, and the human side of power, you'll feel right at home. Subscribe, share with a friend who geeks out on logistics and leadership, and leave a review to tell us which story surprised you most.Come back next week for more stories from Joe in part 2!

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of blues icon B.B. King. During his historic career, King made many appearances on the Avenue, including multiple dates at the Sunset Terrace and the Walker Theatre, and his music was shaped by Avenue musicians. This week on Echoes of Indiana Avenue, we'll celebrate King's 100th birthday by exploring his connections to Indiana Avenue. King's strongest connection to the Avenue was his association with pianist Millard Lee. Born in Franklin, Indiana, in 1909, Lee began working on Indiana Avenue in the early 1940s. From the mid-1950s until his death in 1961, he served as a keyboardist and bandleader for B.B. King. Lee played on many of King's greatest recordings and released a series of solo singles on King's record label. King was also deeply influenced by Indianapolis guitarist Bill Jennings. Born in Indianapolis in 1919, Jennings recorded with artists including Brother Jack McDuff, Louis Jordan, Little Willie John, Bill Doggett, and Willis Jackson — helping to bridge swing, blues, R&B, and modern jazz. King named Jennings as one of his favorite guitarists and praised Jennings' rhythm and technique.
