McKay returns today for an extensive exploration into how our responses to life's setbacks shape our journey. Drawing insights from the Harvard Study of Adult Development, he challenges conventional wisdom, arguing that our perspective transforms challenges from daunting "mountains" into manageable "molehills."McKay reveals happiness isn't predicted by wealth or IQ, but by an "adaptive coping style" - learning from failures to create growth, akin to turning "lemons into lemonade." This is exemplified by Bill Graham, who overcame immense hardship through helping others and embracing a positive outlook. The episode utilizes a "halftime" metaphor for life, urging listeners to assess, learn from past "plays," and strategize for moving forward, rather than dwelling on what cannot be changed. As you will hear, avoiding overreaction to minor inconveniences and fostering a positive "frame of reference" with supportive networks enables us to "fail forward."Main Themes:Our response to failure drives happiness.Adaptive coping matters more than wealth or IQ.Learn from mistakes; turn setbacks into chances.Friends and inspiration help overcome challenges. The halftime metaphor: review, adjust, plan ahead.Overreacting to small issues reduces happiness.Positive thoughts anchor our brain's frame of reference.Faith empowers us to overcome obstacles.Release small worries; value missteps for a content life.Top 10 Quotes:"Almost all failures are not mountains but molehills in the valley of life, unless we make them mountains.""It isn't so much what they started with, what mistakes they made, or what happened to them that influenced their happiness in life, it's what they did with what happened to them that mattered.""Learn to live in thankfulness, looking back at what you have had, and what you didn't have, and most of all, what you do have now.""The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and their response to failure.""A single event doesn't have to define who we are. Instead, we can consider our life over time and look at who we've become as a result of our cumulative choices.""This positive adaptation to life played a significantly greater role than genetics, wealth, race or other factors in determining how happy people were later in life.""Researchers in the study call this an 'adaptive coping style' and describe it as the capacity to turn lemons into lemonade and not turn molehills into mountains.""When we're in the midst of failure, we need to give our brain a framework based on true principles.""Halftime is perhaps the most important part of the game.""Let go of the small things. Value your small missteps, they make us better. Don't sweat the small stuff."Show Links:Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen

Chip Conley is the founder of Joie de Vivre hotels, the second-largest boutique hotel brand in the world. At age 52, he joined Airbnb as Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, reporting to CEO Brian Chesky, who was 21 years younger. He earned the title of Airbnb's “Modern Elder” by guiding the young founders on leadership and culture while learning Silicon Valley's tech mindset himself. Today, Chip leads the Modern Elder Academy, the world's first midlife wisdom school, and is the author of best-selling books like Wisdom@Work and Peak. He champions the idea that age and experience are assets—and that midlife can be a launchpad for renewed purpose and impact. In this conversation, we discuss:1. The reality of Brian Chesky in “founder mode”—the good, bad, and stressful2. How Chip went from running 52 boutique hotels to becoming Airbnb's in-house mentor in his 50s3. The “mentor and intern” mindset: how to simultaneously teach others and stay curious like a beginner4. Why AI might actually favor older workers (hint: human wisdom vs. artificial intelligence)5. His framework for navigating midlife transitions and finding meaning after 406. Specific tactics for older professionals to thrive in tech companies7. Surprising data that midlife is often the happiest time of life—and how to leverage your 40s, 50s, and beyond8. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary benefit concert Live Aid, the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia hosted a conversation between Electric Factory Concerts co-founder and Live Aid Executive Producer Larry Magid and Pierre Robert. In the first part of the conversation Larry shared some technical aspects of the show like what it was like to work with Bob Geldof and Bill Graham to book the show and how they designed the rotating stage to keep the concert continuously going. Pierre Robert discussed how he would do "kamikaze interviews" backstage and talked how electric the crowd got after the Led Zeppelin and CSNY reunions. These stories and many more in this first half of the conversation. A special thanks to the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia for hosting and recording the event and to T Morgan for moderating the conversation.

Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is Ian from Montana, who is here to tell about his experience seeing Phish on July 24, 2015 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA where he went from being a casual 3.0 Phish fan to a Phish family man. The show marked a turning point for him and what a Phish concert experience could be like.2015 was a transformative year for Phish. Not only did Trey kick off the year with the legendary Fare Thee Well Grateful Dead celebration, but the summer tour began with nearly a full album's worth of new material, but each member of the band came ready to play with an array of new effects and sounds that seemed to gel right from the get-go at the tour opener in Oregon. Today's show was the next stop on the tour, and the band capitalized on their auspicious opening just a few days before. While the show was a mixed bag in terms of jamming, Ian was there with his whole family–his wife and his two young children. As we discuss, taking kids to a Phish show can be a contentious topic in our small community, but he pulled it off with aplomb, and this was the show they were all meant to see. So let's join Ian to talk about west coast crowds, Round Room, and Bill Graham as we discuss July 24, 2015 at Shoreline Amphitheater in California.
On this first Friday of 2025, we continue with the conclusion of the Grateful Dead's New Year's Eve concert from December 31, 1971 at Winterland in San Francisco. A long, fun if somewhat sloppy at times show, the enjoyment the band was having is evident throughout.. After a Bill Graham intro they go into Truckin' then Billy really goes off as they go into a Other One jam, then quite interestingly enough into Me & My Uncle before going back into The Other One.. Some other highlights here include the first ever version of Big River, and the last Pigpen version of 'The Same Thing' which the band would not bring back for 20 years... There is some great high energy jamming in the 2nd half of the set, which apparently went on until 3:45 AM. Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday Two Truckin' [8:45] > Drums [3:07] > The Other One Jam [6:01] > Me And My Uncle [2:50] > The Other One [10:19] Space [1:53] > Black Peter [8:38] Big River [3:32] The Same Thing [7:22] Ramble On Rose [5:45] Sugar Magnolia [6:42] Not Fade Away [6:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:08] > Not Fade Away [3:00] Encore Casey Jones [5:24] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010325.mp3 My sincere thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!
