When blues powerhouse Albert Castiglia crossed paths with Bill Murray, neither could have predicted the musical partnership that would follow. In this captivating conversation with Greg Koch, Castiglia pulls back the curtain on how a Hollywood legend became his unexpected bandmate through a series of serendipitous connections that began with Murray's brother John."If Bill Murray wants to play in your band, you let him in your band," Castiglia remarks with characteristic humor. But beneath the celebrity factor lies a genuine musical connection that has taken them from intimate clubs to prestigious venues like Red Rocks. Far from seeking the spotlight, Murray approaches their collaboration with refreshing humility, insisting on equal billing and content to play percussion while occasionally stepping forward for a song. The audience response has been electric, with fans sometimes appearing in Ghostbusters costumes, moved to tears by Murray's magnetic stage presence.Castiglia's own journey through the blues landscape reveals the persistence required to build a sustainable career. From his early influences (discovering blues through Clapton and Johnny Winter's productions with Muddy Waters) to navigating the catch-22 of needing both a record deal and booking agent simultaneously, he speaks candidly about industry challenges. After cycling through five agencies, finding the right representation finally allowed him to expand from 100 shows annually to between 150-200 performances a year. The conversation touches on deeper themes of artistic growth, with Castiglia recently incorporating Coltrane's "Afro Blue" into his setlists after being inspired by Derek Trucks. He also reflects on lifestyle changes that have sustained his longevity, embracing sobriety after COVID and taking up boxing and Kung Fu to maintain his energy for grueling tour schedules. "I do this for the memories," he explains, capturing the essence of why musicians endure the hardships of the road.Ready to experience a genuine conversation between two musicians who've weathered decades in the business? At the time of this interview, 12 songs were recorded. 10 made the final cut and one of the two cut are a bonus digital download for the streaming services. Bye Bye Blues is already hitting the airwaves and McCray is in the midst of working up tour plans, based around his health and the annual Fall tour with Devon Allman/Allman Betts team that he has been on for three years. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with David M'oreDavid M'ore is a mystical guitar slinger with a sound rooted in tradition but forged in fire. Born in Argentina and raised on vintage vinyl, he picked up his first guitar at age eight — a gift from his godfather — and was instantly consumed by the raw power of the instrument. “The aggressive sound of the guitar drove me emotionally insane,” he recalls, crediting early influences like Johnny Winter for igniting his lifelong obsession. http://www.makingascene.org

A lifetime of curious musical collaborations and a killer song that needed to find the right band. Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo, originally by Johnny Winter And, covered by Rick Derringer. Outro music is an utterly improbable cover of Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo by Mean Gene Okerlund. If you know you know, and if you don't you're going to want to take a look at the video link we post.
This week we have NEW Rock and Roll music that DESERVES to be heard from L.A. Guns, The Dead Daisies, Roy Cathey & The Fifth, Dark Chapel, The Cold Stares, and Phil X & The Drills. We also pay tribute to an outstanding musician we lost this past week, Rick Derringer. Rick was an amazing singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. At the age of 17, he scored his first number one hit with his band The McCoys. From there he went on to work with Johnny Winter as a guitarist and producer, then Edgar Winter in the same two roles, solo records, and a lot of guest appearances on many albums. Today we feature a variety of the music Rick has left for us, and we are joined by another amazing musician, Mitch Perry, who was in Edgar Winter's band for a number of years and got to know Rick on a personal level and play alongside him. Whether you are familiar with Rick's work, or are hearing it for the very first time, you will find much to love from his vast catalogue of music. Thanks to Mitch Perry for joining us, and thanks to Rick Derringer for 60 years of Rock and Roll music that DESERVES to be heard!Songlist:L.A. He gained success in the 1960s with his band, the McCoys. Their debut single, "Hang On Sloopy", became a number-one hit in 1965 and is now regarded as a classic track from the garage rock era. The McCoys had seven songs chart in the top 100, including covers of "Fever" and "Come On, Let's Go". After releasing All American Boy, Derringer established a career as a solo artist. In 1973, Derringer found further success with his song "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo". Like many musicians, Kerry started singing and performing when he was a kid in church. At age 7 he was singing solos in front of the entire congregation. Then came piano lessons to learn to read and write music. He really loved to sing though, so he concentrated on his vocals. He performed all throughout his school years, all the way up through college at George Mason University. The West Coast was calling him so in 1988 on a wing and a prayer he heads out to L.A.!! He settles in and meets some great musicians and starts to perform out there, singing in some experimental Rock bands like Acid Clown. In 1991 he came up with the concept of The Thrillbillyz and, along with the help of some great musician friends, was able to record a four song demo at Fox Studios in Glendale, CA and work with the owner/engineer Rich Fox. In 1993 ,after several years of performing around Southern California as The Thrillbillyz, Hurley moves back to the East Coast and his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke definitely is not as big of a market as L.A. but it has a growing music scene and Hurley jumps in head first. He re-forms The Thrillbillyz and starts playing shows like crazy. He continues to write and work on his originals and in 1994 takes his band into Flat Five Studios in Salem, VA and records the album “Romp!” and releases it in 1995. Ten of the eleven songs are originals and a few of the songs (Franklin County Moonshine & Sweet Leaf) wind up on the radio in regular rotation on the area's biggest Rock station 96.3 WROV. The band played constantly in support of it's record and through it's association with Buzz Casey and WROV was able to open up for quite a few National acts like Government Mule, Storyville, Foghat, Loverboy, Johnny Winter, Matchbox 20 and many more!!! The band played and enjoyed success for the next 5 years and in 2000 everyone went their own musical ways. Hurley had been singing on the side for a Blues band called Blues Hangover from 96 to 98 and traveled quite a bit with them, winning several Blues Contests and traveling to Memphis, TN in 97 to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. It was a great learning experience. In 2001 Hurley wound up joining The Fat Daddy Band and that very same year went down and won the Charlotte Blues Society's contest and in 2002 went to Memphis again to represent them at the IBC and made it to the finals (one of ten bands out of 150). For the next 14 years he would front that band and continue to write songs. He put out 2 cd's with The Fat Daddy Band - “From The Soul”(2003) and “Live & Lovin' It!”(2005).

Send us a textAlongside Boone, John Seeley (bass), Alex Wells (guitar), and Dale Myers (drums), these tight-knit guys stay connected to their homegrown roots having been around traditional instruments from a young age in piano, fiddle, and guitar instilling in them an appreciation of country-rock, bluegrass, blues, soul, and folk music. The band blends roots, blues, classic rock, soul, and, of course, Southern rock and has created an original sound reminiscent of some of the great blues-rock/Southern rock bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Wet Willie. They also draw inspiration from some of the all-time blues/soul greats like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and various artists from back in the classic heyday of Motown Records.OTIS is new musical blood for a new day with heavy, melodic blues-rock riffs, soaring guitar work, a pounding rhythm section, and raw, soulful vocals from Mr. Froggett. The band embraces Southern rock's hallowed past while charting their own future. With some of the legendary Southern rock bands winding it down or no longer in existence, OTIS is a proud, new torchbearer of the Southern rock/blues-rock heritage. The band's debut album, 2014's Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim, is a raw, groove-oriented, blues drenched masterpiece that got rave reviews and was a blueprint for things to come for the band. The blistering Eyes of the Sun was released in 2018 on Cleopatra Records and more than lived up to the promise of the band's debut album. Executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Paul Nelson, who earned his stripes by playing and performing with Johnny Winter and helping Johnny win a Grammy for his highly acclaimed album, Step Back, the album solidified the band's influences into a boiling stew of rootsy, kickass, take-no-prisoners, blues-rock goodness kicked up with a bit of soul and funk spiciness. Good musical eats to say the least. And now comes Last Fool in the Line, which is a precursor to a full album that will be released sometime hopefully sooner than later (good things take time!) Episode 173: PCOC Day 4 With Johnny Winter And, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers and Fleetwood Mac! January 7, 2025 The Post Covid Outdoor Concert series was put together at a time in 2021 and 2022 when the badly mismanaged virus was eating people alive. We didn't have a clue as to when or how it would end and whether I'd survive if I got it or my love or my children or grand child or family got it and would it kill them. I thought it was imperative that we needed some music that might steer us to a place of comfort and peace. Yeh! Let's get stoned and put on some tunes! I'm not so much a toker these days but the music can still carry me away. Does it you? What Tales are your Vinyls Telling you? Paul Lamb, Joe Filisko and Adam Sikora join me on episode 125, for a retrospective on one of the legends of the diatonic harmonica, Sonny Terry, whose real name was Saunders Terrell.Sonny was born in 1911 (or 1912), in Greensboro, Georgia (or it could have been North Carolina). Growing up on a farm in a rural community, Sonny was left blind by two accidents in his youth. Unable to work on the farm he turned to music, with his harmonica playing father giving him his early lessons.Sonny first rose to prominence playing with Blind Boy Fuller, and then made a splash by performing at Carnegie Hall in 1938 as part of the ‘From Spirituals To Swing' concert.A few years later he formed probably the most famous blues duo ever, with Brownie McGhee. Sonny and Brownie made their name in the New York Folk scene and went on to play together for forty years, travelling the world, with many festival appearances, on Broadway, in movies and countless albums together. Sonny also played solo and with many other notable musicians besides Brownie, including an album with Johnny Winter towards the end of his life.We look into Sonny's style of playing and talk about how his rhythmical work is essential study in getting your own harmonica chops together.Links:Sonny Terry Estate items for sale:https://bluemoonharmonicas.com/collections/sonny-terry-estate-llcPaul Lamb: http://paullamb.com/Joe Filisko: https://www.filiskostore.com/Adam Sikora: https://jukejointsmokers.com/http://www.the-archivist.co.uk/rare-early-blues-harp-recordings-by-singers-and-sidemen-introduced-by-joe-filisko/Videos:American Folk Blues Festival, Hootin' The Blues:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtO7cctW1uISonny and Woody Guthrie postage stamps playing Lost John:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4ldxb0iGHcSonny and Brownie in one of their last concerts, 1980:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzDNhA5irc8Sonny and Brownie playing on The Jerk, Steve Martin movie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeDgOUoDTsYPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

Interview with Arlen Roth 2024 Arlen Roth is a true guitar legend; part of the list of who he's recorded and toured with contains folks like Simon & Garfunkel (together and individually), John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Bob Dylan, Bee Gees, Don McLean, Levon Helm, Ry Cooder, Duane Eddy, Danny Gatton, Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, John Sebastian, Johnny Winter and countless more. He also appeared with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Patti Smith in the Martin Scorcese Rolling Thunder film, created the guitar parts and was consultant and teacher to Ralph Macchio for the legendary blues film, Crossroads. In 2016, he wrote and performed an acoustic guitar piece with Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom, Jr. of Hamilton for ESPN. Arlen was voted in the Top 100 most Influential guitarists of all time by Vintage Guitar Magazine and top 50 all-time acoustic guitarists by Gibson.com. Now, on Arlen Roth's 20th solo album and his fifth all-acoustic offering, he's bringing rootsy acoustic music to new heights on Playing Out the String, set for release September 27 and distributed by MVD. The new album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alex Salzman, who also contributes keyboards to the mix. Arlen's previous album, Super Soul Session, with bass legend Jerry Jemmott, sat atop the Blues and Soul charts for 22 straight weeks, and was in the Top 5 for 55 straight weeks this past year. Arlen has also been at the forefront of guitar and music education, with 10 best-selling books, and he was the first-ever to offer video instruction with the giants of the music industry through his “Hot Licks” company, which he started in 1979, and has had millions of students worldwide. His column for Guitar Player magazine was voted #1 by the largest margin of readers from 1982 to 1992, and was also turned into a best-selling book, Hot Guitar. On Playing Out the String, this all-acoustic, mostly solo album is very personal to Arlen and is really like getting an up-close "at home" concert in your living room. On it, he paints with broad strokes across several genres of music he loves. From "Old Timey" Norman Blake material to country blues from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Tampa Red; he even makes you feel at home with Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" and gives his 12-string guitar a workout on the archetypical, "Walk Right In." https://www.arlenroth.com

Talk Talk, Blackadder, Monty Python, Powell & Pressburger, Oscar Wilde, Celtic folk, the Pre-Raphaelites and other early influences. … and the advantage of never being cool.
