L is for Ligtnin' (and) Licks. Ladies Love Loud Losers, listen...In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2025, lazy, lackluster yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-third episode. In this episode of the Kankakee Podcast, host Jake LaMore takes listeners for a musical ride through the story of “City of New Orleans,” the legendary train song that forever tied Kankakee to the annals of Americana. With music clips from Steve Goodman, Arlo Guthrie, and Willie Nelson woven throughout, Jake explores how this folk classic was born from a real train journey, penned by Chicago native Steve Goodman as both a love letter and a eulogy to the Illinois Central Line.Jake digs into the song's vivid imagery, straight from Goodman's notebook, including that famous moment when “the train pulls out of Kankakee.” Along the way, he shares the song's journey from its humble beginnings to national fame—thanks to Arlo Guthrie's hit recording and Willie Nelson's Grammy-winning country cover. The episode also shines a light on Goodman's remarkable life, his all-too-brief career, and the ways he used music to capture small-town stories, heartland landscapes, and the fading glory of America's railroads. As Jake discusses the cultural legacy of “City of New Orleans,” listeners are invited to reflect on Kankakee's place in the song, in rail history, and in American songwriting lore. Why did Goodman's ode to a disappearing train route resonate so deeply? How did a passing mention turn Kankakee into a piece of music history? Join Jake for a nostalgic, toe-tapping, and heartfelt episode that proves some journeys—and some songs—never truly end.Don't forget to cue up your favorite version of “City of New Orleans” after the show, and, as always, remember to wave at the train when it passes through Kankakee!Send us a textSupport the show

Jonathan GrossmanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jonathan Grossman. Known in some circles as Johnny Keys; Jon is the keyboard player for the rock band Uncle Lucius. Jon is from Kentucky, and how he became part of this kickass south Texas band is a good story, I get him to tell it to me in this episode. We discuss his growing up in Lexington, and what he was doing after school before the universe aligned and Uncle Lucius rolled into his town. We also chat about other bands that have keyboard players in them, and even some fake movie bands that do. Uncle Lucius took a bit of a break a few years ago, and then through a series of magical events, they were almost forced back together. The television show Yellowstone happened to feature an Uncle Lucius song in the fourth episode of the first season. The song caught fire all over again and made the band look into getting back together to see what they had left in the tank. As it turns out, they had quite a lot. Since then, they have released 3 more albums and just recorded yet another one a few weeks ago live at Gruene Hall. I ask Jon about the royalty implications of having a song blow up on a TV show like that, and he give HUGE props to Austin attorney Gwendolyn Seale! One of their more recent albums is called 'Like It's The Last One Left' and features one of my favorite Uncle Lucius songs (All the Angelenos). Jon is gracious enough to let me play that song, and their massive hit (from Yellowstone) called Keep the Wolve Away. Naturally we talk about the live show at Gruene Hall, why they haven't headlined at world famous Stubb's in Austin, and Uncle Lucius' insane touring schedule. We end the show talking about some of Jon's other work. He releases music under the name 'Sleepy Jon', as well as performing live at Sam's Town Point (south of Austin) EVERY Wednesday that Uncle Lucius is in town. Three members of Uncle Lucius are in this weekly performing band with some of Arlo Guthrie's daughters. The band is called The Guthrie Girls. Alright, buckle up, ya middle-aged maniacs. In this one, the Governor is still off the grid, so Dr. Rees and Jackson get into the real stuff—y'know, the kind of weird shit you do when no one's watchin'. You ever caught yourself in the mirror like Paul Rudd in Wanderlust? Yeah, we're talkin' about THAT level of weird. But wait, there's more! We take a detour into Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. You know, the pyramid thing everyone brings up when they're tryin' to sound smart. Turns out, anxiety's lurking in there somewhere like a drunk uncle at Thanksgiving. And speakin' of Thanksgiving, the boys remind us why it's the king of holidays. Spoiler: it's all about Arlo Guthrie and his 18-minute masterpiece, Alice's Restaurant. That song? It's a rite of passage, not just a tune. Oh, and then we wrap it up with some solid old-school rebellion. Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas? She ate a BANANA on the freakin' Ed Sullivan Show. A BANANA! Back then, that was like moonin' the Queen. So grab a drink, pop in the earbuds, and let's dive into the beautifully absurd world of middle-aged nonsense. Hey, Bud, do us a solid, will ya? Head over to Apple Podcasts or Spotify, slap us with a 5-star rating, and maybe even toss in a quick review. Look, I'm not sayin' we've earned it yet, but c'mon—we're workin' on it! While you're at it, hit that ‘subscribe' button like it owes you money. And hey, swing by olddogpack.com and sign up for The Old Dog Pack newsletter. Is it gonna change your life? Nah. But it's free, so what're ya complaining about? Most importantly—and I mean this—tell a buddy about us. We're nothin' without you guys, and we wanna grow this thing into a whole pack of you maniacs. Help us out, huh?
It's my annual Thanksgiving special. Along with the fine blues, soul and rock n roll I play Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie. Also a special interview with Zepparella's drummer Clementine about the bands show here in Bellingham, WA. Dec. 7th at the 211 Club. Best wishes to you and your family on these holidays.
In this special Thanksgiving holiday episode, we're looking back to our recent season on the films of 1969, to talk about Arthur Penn's Alice's Restaurant. From Bill:Reflecting upon the recent death of Alice Brock, the lady who lived in the bell tower of the abandoned church in Stockbridge, MA, along with her husband, Ray, (and Vacha, the dog) -, and who hosted the now legendary Thanksgiving feast attended by young Arlo Guthrie, that time when he got arrested trying to do his hosts a solid by dumping their excessive garbage - which subsequently soiled his record, making him ineligible for the draft. Well, reflecting upon this landmark recording made me realize how much Arlo and his song had been fundamental to my life-long, anti-authoritarian world view. And how, years later, when the war had escalated, and my turn came up for the draft, even though I escaped with a high lottery number, I was already weighing my options. I was only 14 when the song was released, but it hipped me to the absurdity of the war in Viet Nam, the legal system, and petty bureaucrats in general. Arlo accomplished this “us against them” subversion with genial irony, which he delivered with an easy charm - not to mention an impressive Travis picking style. It didn't hurt that he had the name recognition as the scion of the OG of poetical protest singers, Woody Guthrie, whose song “This Land is Your Land,” almost became our national anthem, and was the adopted relative of “uncle” Pete Seeger, whose signature sing-along method of inspiring social change Arlo employs so effectively here. It was a cultural bombshell, and a first in many ways: At 18 minutes, FM radio usually played it in three separate parts making each rotation an event. It was the longest song to ever gain radio play when spun in its entirety. However, here at the Hotel Bohemia, time has no meaning, so it can be played all the way through on a continuous loop. Alice will be hosting her first post-mortal Turkey Day, so let's spin it again in her honor. BEST WISHES FROM BILL AND RICH, THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS!

EPISODE 119: Island Hopper Songwriter Fest Special. Erick Willis: In a time when many artists are striving to find their identity, Erick Willis is slowly leaving his mark on the scene, with a personality that is true and not just a stage persona. He has shared the stage with notable artists from Vince Gill, Arlo Guthrie, and Tedeschi Trucks Band to Los Lobos, Iris Dement, G.E. Smith, Jorma Kaukonen, and Willie Nile. This week, a tribute to legendary singer-songwriter John Prine by his son Tommy Prine & longtime friend and co-writer Keith Sykes recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. John Prine was an American singer-songwriter of country-folk music. Widely cited as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation, Prine was known for his signature blend of humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, often with elements of social commentary and satire, as well as sweet songs and melancholy ballads. He was active as a composer, recording artist, live performer, and occasional actor from the early 1970s until his death in 2020. John was connected to Mountain View, Arkansas through his love of fishing and Jack's Resort on the beautiful White River. John visited Mountain View regularly since his childhood and made many friends in the area. In fact, according to John, his first public performance as a teenager was for fellow patrons at Jack's White River Resort. https://www.johnprine.com/about Tommy Prine is an American singer-songwriter and is the youngest son of John Prine. After his father's death in 2020, Tommy decided to pursue a musical career. At the age of 10, Tommy learned how to fingerpick from his father. As a teenager, Prine traveled with his father's tour primarily to assist with merchandise, then occasionally joining him on stage for the encore. While Prine endeavored to create distinct and independent music from his father, his influence is remembered by everything from covering John Prine songs to writing songs about his father. While Tommy is often compared to John, he developed his own path while acknowledging the legacy of his award-winning father. https://www.tommyprine.com/ Once upon a time in the summer of 1967, Keith Sykes hitchhiked to the Newport Folk Festival and saw Arlo Guthrie perform “Alice's Restaurant.” In the fall of that year he got a copy of the album, learned the whole song and sang it at a Holiday Inn in Charleston, South Carolina. They hired him on the spot for a regular gig playing music in the hotel. In the more than 40 years that followed, he would become a troubadour and storyteller, a massively successful songwriter with more than 100 songs recorded by artists as diverse as Rosanne Cash and George Thorogood. He would tour every corner of America and play in just about every conceivable kind of venue, appear on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits, and host songwriter nights on Memphis' legendary Beale Street with many of music's most talented songwriters. He would join Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, tour the country and record the Volcano album – the title track for which he co-wrote with Jimmy. - http://www.keithsykes.com/ In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1976 archival recording of John Prine himself performing his famous song “Paradise,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins discusses the Ozarks' influence at the “Festival of Festivals,” the first National Folk Festival held in St. Louis, Missouri in 1934. (Part 3)

Episode 285: As I say in the opening of this week's show, it's one thing to get applause for your songs, and it's another to get laughs. John Craigie of Portland, OR has quietly built a robust touring career because he's an excellent songwriter who also keeps his audiences in stitches between songs. His newest album is a collaboration called Pagan Church with TK and the Holy Know-Nothings, the Portland band fronted by admired songwriter Taylor Kingman. We talk about how Craigie developed his stagecraft under the influence of artists like Arlo Guthrie and his friend Todd Snider, as well as his unlikely path to performing while getting a math degree in California. No surprise, it's a lot of fun. Also in the hour, Dave Wilson and John Teer reflect on 25 years as Chatham County Line and the new directions baked into the new album Hiyo.

Her reputation as an insightful and considerate contributor to the creative process has earned her countless honors and accolades. She has worked with many prestigious clients over the years, including Celestial Seasonings, Miller-Coors, Jose Cuervo, almost every major publisher, and world-famous resorts. She had the privilege of completing a mural for the Sheikh of Dubai's grand celebration at Godolphin racecourse and made it all the way to Carnegie Hall, signing posters with Arlo Guthrie. Echo has won dozens of awards for illustration. And since 2019 has been the coordinating judge for Illustrators of the Future, a prestigious global competition for illustrators early in their career. The contest is a platform for established artists to support new professionals in an effort to pay it forward to the next generation. Other judges – past and present – include Frank Frazetta, Wil Eisner, Larry Elmore, Bob Eggleton, and Frank Kelly Freas. She art directs the annual best seller Writers of the Future and, with her husband Lazarus, instructs contest winners in a weekly seminar in Hollywood, CA every year. “Sometimes I'm asked if I'll ever write a book,” notes actor, playwright and singer-songwriter Jeff Daniels, “and I always answer that I already have. It's in my songs.” This is true. But now it's also true that the stuff of Jeff Daniels's life is on delightful display in the Audible Originals memoir “Alive and Well Enough”—a collection of stories, musings and songs that invites listeners into the heart and mindset of one of our most versatile performers, offered with grace and good cheer and midwestern soul. Daniels, the two-time Emmy Award-winning actor and star of such iconic films as “Terms of Endearment,” “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” “Dumb and Dumber,” “Pleasantville,” and “The Squid and the Whale,” recalls being inspired in this effort by the story-laced songs of Steve Goodman and Arlo Guthrie, and, more recently, by Bruce Springsteen's “Springsteen on Broadway.” Part podcast, part musical memoir, part bulletins from the frontlines of contemporary storytelling, “Alive and Well Enough” is a wildly entertaining mash-up of Jeff Daniels's many gifts as a writer and performer, including scenes from some of the author's original plays, many of which have been staged at The Purple Rose Theatre Company in his hometown of Chelsea, Mich. “[It's] is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” he says of his new audio project, which he calls “an adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing, and stories to tell.” Join us for an insightful, engaging and surprisingly candid conversation on what it means to channel the work of some of our finest playwrights and screenwriters – like Lanford Wilson (“Fourth of July”), Scott Frank (“Godless”) and Aaron Sorkin (“The Newsroom” and the Broadway adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird”). “When you're inside the writing, it rubs off,” he says. This is true as well. Note: This episode of As Told To: The Ghostwriting Podcast features narrative and song excerpts from Jeff Daniels's audio memoir “Alive and Well Enough,” presented courtesy of Audible Originals.
