#235 Loss affects every area of our life. Whether we lose a loved one to death or divorce, or experience challenges financially, physically, emotionally, or spiritually, we can find ourselves struggling, questioning, confused, not realizing that instead of “going crazy,” we are simply grieving. What can we do to ensure that we honor the losses, grieve in meaningful ways, and yet live our lives with meaning and purpose, even joy?  In this episode, I will bring on a very dear friend, Don Damond, to help us answer that question. In 2017, Don's life was torn apart by the tragic killing of his fiancee, Justine Ruszczyk Damond, at the hands of Minneapolis Police. Justine called 911 to assist someone she thought was being assaulted and, instead, ended up becoming a victim herself. While standing in her alley, barefoot and in pajamas, she was shot and killed by a police officer.  That loss led Don down a very difficult path, but her memory ended up becoming his guide through the tragedy. He learned so much about love, resiliency, the human spirit and healing. Since then, he has been working tirelessly to make sure Justine's death leads to real public safety reforms, and so far so good, because there have been some really positive changes in their city.  By sharing his story with you, Don hopes that you will be inspired to start “the next chapter” of your beautiful life beyond the trauma of grief as you engage in deeper self-exploration and bring greater purpose and meaning out of the losses in your life so you can live intentionally and with joy. He will highlight several action steps that you can take including appreciating life, building a relationship with yourself and others, personal strength, new possibilities, and spiritual development, which are all vital to helping you heal. I hope our conversation will mean as much to you as it did to me. Enjoy! About Don: Don Damond is enrolled with the Iroquois band of Oneida First Nations. He passionately worked for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, running their casino resort operations for 29 years. He is passionate about conscious leadership and leading with care, presence and love. He recently stepped away from that amazing career to step toward purpose. He teaches meditation to incarcerated men and juveniles, knowing these teachings can reduce stress and anxiety and ultimately help these men create a different life. Don has led men's groups for several years and recently stepped into using ancient sacred plant medicines in sacred circles. Don teaches a weekly meditation course called High Vibe Tribe and he can be reached at damonddon@gmail.com for more information. In the premiere, we met a few of Michelle's students, including two Somali students. The metro area of Minneapolis has one of the highest Somali populations in the world (outside of East Africa). Will Danielle be giving us Minnesota stories all season long, probably! Danielle tells Justine Ruszczyk Damond's story. Justine was originally from Australia, living on the south side of Minneapolis. Justine was doing what a good neighbor does and was reporting a potential crime in her neighborhood. They say, see something, say something; so she did. Somali Minneapolis Police Officer Mohamed Noor and his partner arrived on the scene and shot Justine outside of her home, claiming they heard a noise that startled them and thought that Justine was the perpetrator. This case occurred in 2017, prior to the murder of George Floyd, and it touches on officer-involved shootings, race, the Somali immigrant population in Minneapolis, and the policies and procedures of deadly force. The ruling will likely result in a shorter sentence for Noor and has implications for the conviction of former police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd.--Georgia Fort reports: The conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor was overturned Wednesday by the Minnesota Supreme Court. Noor was convicted of 3rd degree murder and second degree manslaughter for fatally shooting Justine Ruszczyk in 2017. “Now we have Noor who is going to get a lesser sentence,” said legal analyst Lee Hutton.  “And I believe if I calculated right, when this goes back to the trial court to determine the correct sentence he may be out in October of this year.”Hutton says the Supreme Court ruling has broader implications; Noor's case was used as a legal precedent to charge former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin with third degree murder.“Chauvin has an appeal circulating in the court of appeals and so the court of appeals is going to take direction from the Supreme Court.   And I do believe this 3rd degree murder charge is going to be erased or overturned because of these new developments.  Now that doesn't mean that Chauvin is going to be a free man and get out of prison because he is still convicted on other charges.”Meanwhile, Chauvin and the other three former officers involved in George Floyd's death plead not guilty in federal court Tuesday. They're charged with violating George Floyd's civil rights. More than a dozen more pretrial hearings are expected before the federal trial will begin.

A group of 14 Minneapolis police officers issued a public letter today condemning Dererk Chauvin, the former officer who’s now charged with the murder of George Floyd. “Dear Everyone - but especially Minneapolis citizens,” they wrote, “We are with you and want to communicate a sentiment that is broad within our ranks.” The letter is a rare break from the united front that the rank and file of the Minneapolis police usually present in public, even after the shooting of Justine Ruszczyk in 2017. It’s almost unheard of for any members of any department in the country to speak out regarding a criminal matter involving one of their own. This is an MPR News evening update for Thursday June 11, 2020. Hosted by Tim Nelson and Britta Greene. Our theme music is by Gary Meister.

Minnesota's Twin Cities a microcosm of the state of affairs in the new and improved USA. Jeronimo Yanez' panic-murder of Philando Castile...followed by Mohamed Noor's even more egregious panic-murder of Justine Ruszczyk; all's well in the Twin Cities and the great state of Minnesota, all's well in the great USA. Vain pursuits, such as renowned scientist, atheist Stephen Hawking calling for humankind to create a space colony to enable humankind to continue for a million years...; a tiny humankind sample selected by people devoid of faith in God, obedience to God...and thus reflective of that dearth of godly values and even the tiniest modicum of godly wisdom....
