The Building BITE host Mike Diercksen, CRIS, welcomes Nick Demonte, Cement Mason Coordinator, and Tim Nelson, Plastering Coordinator at ITF OPCMIA. We begin the episode by discussing Nick and Tim's professional career, which eventually lead them both to an educational role. Nick and Tim share the new technology they are bringing to the industry and demonstrate the need to incorporate these new strategies due to the labor workforce continuing to shrink. Nick and Tim leave provide excellent insight into the labor force at large, and ultimately leave us with three key takeaways. 1. Recruit: As an industry, we are losing more workers than we are bringing on and we need to find ways to recruit diverse talent. Using tools such as the VR Simulator is just one way that we are looking to engage with both our existing prospect pools and to expand into new groups that may not have otherwise looked at the trades. 2. Train: It is not enough to simply get more people to join the labor work force, but we need to train these new workers to be able to hit the ground running and shorten their learning curve. Using these technologies enables the industry to do exactly that, while offering opportunities to existing laborers to renew certifications and enhance their own experience. 3. Retain: As it stands, industry data shows that in the coming years we will be losing four workers for every one that enters the labor workforce. Investing in technology and demonstrating to new workers the career opportunities available to them will be instrumental to retention rates and the long-term success of our industry. The hill is made of road tiles, but some of the tiles are pitted with potholes. Players can use Playdoh to patch potholes in the road so the marbles will make it to the finish. The board is a grid laid over a raised pyramid where players put down terrain. Everything starts in the center (city hall); that's where you put the marbles so they roll down the hill. Each quadrant is a side of the pyramid, there's some method of tiling for the player to put pieces down to determine how the marbles will travel in that area.Turn orderPlay starts with the player who most recently hit a pothole with their car or their bike. In case of a tie (as might happen if multiple players were in a car together), the younger player goes first.Play then proceeds clockwise.Players can take 3 actions on their turn. You can do the same action more than once. The actions are:Rotate the boardPlace or swap a tilePatch a potholeDrop a marbleTilesEach tile is worth 1, 2 or 3 victory points when marbles pass through. The rougher the tile, the more victory points it's worth.Players also get a bit of Play-Doh to fill up potholes in the terrain.Players have 5 tiles in their hand at any given time; as an action, they can play one, then draw back up to 5 tiles.Rotating the boardRotating the board happens towards the left (counterclockwise), the opposite of play order, which goes to the right (clockwise). Each rotation turns the board 90 degrees.Scoring & dropping marblesIf a marble reaches the bottom of the hill in front of you, you get the victory points that it acquired from each tile it moved through on its journey from the top of the hill to the bottom. You ONLY get the victory points if the marble reaches the bottom of the hill. If you drop a marble as an action, and the marble gets stuck on the way, you don't get any points from the tiles it passed through.Winning the gamePlay proceeds in 12 rounds. Each player gets one turn per round.Play ends when the turn counter reaches zero (game starts at the start of winter, ends at the start of the next winter)Whoever has acquired the most victory points by the end of the "year" is the winner of Pothole RunFun stuff to think about for the futureWe have to create an extractor to get the playdoh out.Cooperative play mode? Roles for each player? Someone who's better at filling potholes, someone who can put more marbles down, etc. Maybe two teams?

Tim was diagnosed in his early twenties, but through the lens of stigma. And his late diagnosis prevented him from integrating into the mainstream school system. But as a creative problem solver, Tim chose to see his diagnoses as little annoyances rather than burdens, and followed the path of his dyslexia as a gift. In his youth, Tim developed seven skills that helped him navigate his childhood through learning disabilities and other mental health challenges. The skills are creativity, coaching projects, running programs, improving people, knowing oneself, understanding interactions and defining standard work. School resource officers (SROs) are set to return to two districts in Blue Earth County. This comes about a week after Attorney General Keith Ellison released a second opinion meant to clarify when officers are allowed to use force, including certain kinds of restraints, under a new law.A number of law enforcement agencies across the state have recently pulled officers from schools, saying they needed more clarity. And they called for a special session to revise the law. 'We're all clear' Ellison says latest moves should end questions over police in schools The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association sent a letter to its members agreeing to Ellison's updated guidance. Blue Earth County Sheriff Jeff Wersal told MPR News reporter Tim Nelson he is following that advice. “Every case is different, every case is unique. So as long as the deputy can articulate the need for force — once POST [Board] weighed in and MPPOA weighed in — I felt comfortable putting them back in,” he said. “I still feel, though, that it needs to be looked at by the legislature.”The Blue Earth County Sheriff's office oversees the deputies that work in St. Clair and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial School District, which have about 760 and 960 students respectively. Mankato Area Public Schools is by far the largest district in Blue Earth County, and that city's Public Safety Department also pulled its SROs over the law.A school district spokesperson told MPR News the city is waiting for guidance from the League of Minnesota Cities, expected sometime this week.St. Clair Superintendent Tim Collins and Lake Crystal Superintendent Mark Westerburg joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about the decision to reinstate SROs.Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.Subscribe to the Minnesota Now podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. We attempt to make transcripts for Minnesota Now available the next business day after a broadcast.
