A new season of your favorite podcast is back. We took a little break, but we are back; joining us in this episode is a 25-year Veteran and NOPD Sgt. Damond Harris, an old friend of the show. Damond, April, and I sit down, watch an episode of NCIS New Orleans, and rip it apart. The idea came from April after we watched an episode, and me ripping on it for being totally unrealistic. So sit back and enjoy this new season of LSN.
Rhetoric, Vernacular, and Dialects are various and regional. Yet, the meaning always appears.
#235 Loss affects every area of our life. Whether we lose a loved one to death or divorce, or experience challenges financially, physically, emotionally, or spiritually, we can find ourselves struggling, questioning, confused, not realizing that instead of “going crazy,” we are simply grieving. What can we do to ensure that we honor the losses, grieve in meaningful ways, and yet live our lives with meaning and purpose, even joy? In this episode, I will bring on a very dear friend, Don Damond, to help us answer that question. In 2017, Don's life was torn apart by the tragic killing of his fiancee, Justine Ruszczyk Damond, at the hands of Minneapolis Police. Justine called 911 to assist someone she thought was being assaulted and, instead, ended up becoming a victim herself. While standing in her alley, barefoot and in pajamas, she was shot and killed by a police officer. That loss led Don down a very difficult path, but her memory ended up becoming his guide through the tragedy. He learned so much about love, resiliency, the human spirit and healing. Since then, he has been working tirelessly to make sure Justine's death leads to real public safety reforms, and so far so good, because there have been some really positive changes in their city. By sharing his story with you, Don hopes that you will be inspired to start “the next chapter” of your beautiful life beyond the trauma of grief as you engage in deeper self-exploration and bring greater purpose and meaning out of the losses in your life so you can live intentionally and with joy. He will highlight several action steps that you can take including appreciating life, building a relationship with yourself and others, personal strength, new possibilities, and spiritual development, which are all vital to helping you heal. I hope our conversation will mean as much to you as it did to me. Enjoy! About Don: Don Damond is enrolled with the Iroquois band of Oneida First Nations. Life was about to take a whole new turn. I graduated from high school and got my diploma, and I also enrolled in some courses at the local community college. On May 21, 1998, I gave birth to twins as 29-week preemies. Damia weighed 2lb 5oz, and Damond, who weighed 3lb 1oz. While I welcomed two beautiful babies into the world, Keila was four years old at the time. I was a struggling but strong-willed single mother. There was nothing that was going to come between my kids and me. Once again, I was forced to depend on Patricia because I had no family in Kentucky, but I also depended on public assistance to help with the bare minimum and keep the lights on. Because the twins were so small, I had to keep them home and out of daycare for the first year. This made it impossible for me to work, so I had no choice but to get food stamps, Medicaid, and housing assistance. We didn't have a car, but we managed. My deep-rooted skills of taking the city bus as a young kid would learn to pay off. “YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT YOUR CHILDREN. THEY ARE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF LIFE'S LONGING FOR ITSELF. THEY COME THROUGH YOU BUT NOT FROM YOU. AND THOUGH THEY ARE WITH YOU YET THEY BELONG NOT TO YOU.” – KHALIL GIBRAN My story isn't only my own; it's the story of my children, future grandchildren, and the legacy that comes long after I am gone from this earth. I owe the most significant gratitude to my three exceptional adult children, Keila, Damia, and Damond. I am so sorry you have a mom that's been so significantly impacted by adoption, and in return it has impacted each of you greatly. My heart will always hurt because of this. Without you all, I would have taken myself out of my misery long ago. So many times, I have wanted to give up, but you gave me the courage to keep going because of my love for each of you. You have been my biggest supporters and the core reason I have wanted to be the happy, healthy mom you all deserve. Thank you for cheering me on and not giving up on me! Learn more about how NetSuite works with nonprofits here: https://bit.ly/35OC6TO Guest host and NetSuite content marketing manager, Ian McCue is back! He chats with Dave Damond, the CFO of March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization focused on the health of moms and babies facing preterm birth (2:27). After diving into how March of Dimes educates and advocates for its mission (4:50), Damond talks about his personal career history and why he ditched a big four accounting firm for the nonprofit sector (6:06). He discusses the major differences between nonprofit organizations and for profit businesses (8:04) as well as the top challenges nonprofits face, especially around fundraising and forecasting (10:09). Damond then recalls his start at March of Dimes in 2018, during which he was hyper-focused on just one thing: Replacing the organization's 30-year-old system and implementing NetSuite in order to operate more efficiently and close the books faster (12:33). He says there were over 40 people reconciling bank accounts and acting as “local controllers,” and the finance team was inundated by manual processes, like reporting and closing the books (14:19). Damond's goal was to make the finance team more analytical, reducing manual tasks and increasing value-added work (17:47). Since implementation, March of Dimes has gained valuable insights into vendors and been able to make more informed decisions around its events, all of which has saved the organization money (22:35) and helped it fulfill its mission. Damond says NetSuite also helped the finance team pull daily reports amid the pandemic, ensuring the organization really understood its cash flow (27:04). Finally, Damond hits on his biggest achievement as March of Dimes' CFO (30:21), his top advice for future finance leaders (33:36) and where he sees the role of the CFO evolving in the future (35:33). Justine Damond is "the most innocent victim" of a police shooting that her lawyer has ever seen. This quote comes from an attorney who worked with Philando Castile's family to get justice for Mr. Castile. Justine Damond was an innocent victim. No one disputes that. But what of all the other innocent victims? What makes Justine the "most innocent" among of group of innocent victims of police brutality? How is it that she is more innocent than Tamir Rice who was playing with a toy gun on a playground in an "open carry" state? Or Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a small child who was asleep on a couch in her own home?. Or John Crawford III who was examining a BB gun for sale in the fake gun aisle at Walmart? Or Akai Gurley, the man that NYC Police chief Bill Bratton dubbed "a completely innocent man" who stepped out of his apartment, only to be shot (by accident) by a rookie cop? Why are they less innocent than Ms. Damond? Where is the "Blue Lives Matter" crowd? They always rush to the defense of the officer when the dead person is Black. Why has the media erupted into self-righteous contempt for the Black Muslim officer who shot Justine Damond? They usally dig up any information that might help the officer. But in this case, they turned against the officer..They demand that this "killer cop" be brought to justice. *Now* they want police accountability. But the media and many Americans seem completely at peace whenever an innocent African American or Native American is gunned down curbside. The media sheds no tears for any innocent Black victim, not even 7 year old Aiyana Jones. They ask no questions when the courts repeatedly affirm that Black victims' lives do not count. The media and many white Americans remain unbothered when innocent Black blood is shed. But for Justine Damond, justice WILL be served. Believe it! Tues, July 25, 2017. 6 pm PT
