I am so excited to say that my guest on today's podcast is the esteemed curator and writer, Emerson Bowyer. Currently the Searle Curator, Painting and Sculpture of Europe, at the Art Institute of Chicago, Emerson is a specialist in 18th- and 19th-century French and British art. He has worked at New York's Frick Collection, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where his highly-acclaimed curated exhibitions have spanned the spectrum of sculpture, such as 19th century artist Canova to, more recently, the artist we are very excitingly discussing today, the trailblazing, Camille Claudel. …which was staged at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Getty in LA, as the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist in the US for 35 years. https://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/claudel/index.html https://www.artic.edu/exhibitions/9714/camille-claudel Born in France in 1864, Claudel has been hailed for her meticulously rendered and intensely passionate works of mythological and real figures. Hand-carving marble, she defied not just her gender, but the possibilities of sculpture itself – with her intimate and skillful portrayals of human bodies and reworkings of classical tales from a distinctly female perspective. Yet, despite having one of the most extraordinary careers in art history, it took until four decades until after her death, in the 1980s for her work to be properly appreciated, and until now – thanks to people like Emerson – who put her work on the world's stage for all to see. Ralph welcomes back Hassan El-Tayyab, the Legislative Director for Middle East policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation to talk about the FCNL's recent lobbying efforts in support of a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the recently-introduced bill to restore funding to UNRWA. Then, Ralph is joined by journalist Rachel Corbett to discuss her recent article for the NY Times Magazine "The For-Profit City That Might Come Crashing Down" about Próspera, the private, for-profit city off the coast of Honduras. Finally, our resident international-law expert Bruce Fein stops by to discuss Israel's recent coordinated attacks in Lebanon. Hassan El-Tayyab is Legislative Director for Middle East policy and Advocacy Organizer at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Previously, he was co-director of the national advocacy group Just Foreign Policy, where he worked to reassert Congressional war authority and promote human rights in the Middle East and Latin America. He played a major role in the successful passage of the War Powers Resolution to end US military aid to the Saudi-UAE coalition's war in Yemen. I've been reading a recent statement that the Friends Committee has put out on the Gaza situation. They just can't seem to keep up with the massive expansion of Israeli state terrorism and the death and destruction that's being wrought on hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians, families, children, mothers, fathers, and the civilian infrastructure. [Their] effort on Capitol Hill—which is a longstanding feature of the Friends Committee on Legislation—seems hopelessly overwhelmed by the AIPAC-led Israeli-government-can-do-no-wrong lobby.Ralph NaderWe try to find common ground. As you know, the Quaker way is to believe that there's a spirit and light in everybody—whether we agree with them or not, we want to engage. And that's just a philosophy that we've had for over 80 years as an organization, and much longer than that as Quakers doing peace advocacy work going back hundreds of years. So we try to engage with everybody. Maybe we don't agree on the weapons shipments, but we can agree on sending US Navy hospital ships to the region. Hassan El-TayyabIf we care about peace, we have to throw down for peace. And not just support humanitarian aid, but actually get involved in the political end of this as well. Because we are spiraling. We're spiraling into a dark place if we don't get our act together.Hassan El-TayyabRachel Corbett is a journalist who has written for the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, and New York Magazine, among other publications. And she is the author of You Must Change Your Life: The Story of Rainer Maria Rilke and Auguste Rodin which won the 2016 Marfield Prize, the National Award for Arts Writing. On the one hand, you could almost laugh at something like this. There's so many silly anecdotes that come out of it. And on the other hand, it seems incredibly serious, like something that may be happening underneath the surface that has actually been intentionally happening underneath the surface. I think there's a concerted effort to keep things quiet while these cities get built and become almost too big to tear down… Although they're not that advanced, the sheer money behind them and the influence of the people behind them is serious, and this tribunal case alone proves it could have really serious effects on the actual world.Rachel CorbettBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law. Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall. There is no way that Israel was able to limit the distribution of the pages to Hezbollah, so they knew that they were taking a very high risk that civilians would be killed or injured—which is a violation of the Geneva Convention prohibition upon resorting to any military endeavor where the risk of harm to civilians is dramatically disproportionate to the military objective at issue.Bruce FeinEven with the low bar that many people present before the Biden administration, it is unsettling to see White House spokespeople day after day knowingly lying about Israel “complying with all laws.”Ralph Nader Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. To mark the occasion, an international event called Picasso Celebration has been organized, with 50 museums throughout the world running 50 different shows looking at the legacy of Picasso, among the most well-known artists of the 20th century. Certainly the most unusual and most talked about of these is not a “celebration” of Picasso at all. The Brooklyn Museum is hosting “It's Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby.” Brooklyn Museum curators Catherine Morris and Lisa Small have worked with the famous Australian stand-up comedian Hannah Gadsby to create an art show that takes its cues from Gadsby's 2018 blockbuster Netflix comedy special Nanette. That show was, among other things, a blistering argument about the sexism of art history, the art industry, and, specifically, of Picasso.“It's Pablo-matic” has itself been at the center of a wave of criticism in recent weeks. Rachel Corbett, Artnet's deputy editor, speaks to Ben Davis, Artnet's national art critic, who wrote a long essay about the show, the reaction to the show, and what both mean for the site.

Anyone who's driven by a car dealership in the U.S. has probably seen them: Inflatable nylon figures with smiley faces, bending and twisting in the breeze. These roadside attention getters are known in the marketing world as "tube men" or "sky dancers." Paul Chan calls them "Breathers," and they have played a central role in the artist's practice since he debuted his own uncanny renditions of the dancers in 2017 at Greene Naftali gallery in New York. The swaying figures also symbolize the artist's own winding approach to his practice, and the need, sometimes, to take a breather. After working primarily with video early in his career—including violating sanctions to shoot a video essay in Baghdad during the U.S. occupation—Chan grew exhausted by screens. He left art production for five years and opened his own publishing house, the beloved indie outfit Badlands Unlimited, which has put out eclectic titles ranging from Saddam Hussein's speeches on democracy to the interactive e-book What Is a Kardashian? Chan made his return to visual art after realizing that those car-lot tube men could be turned into offscreen animations. Now, the "Breathers" are the centerpiece of a major solo show at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, open through July 16. Artnet News's deputy editor Rachel Corbett sat down with Chan—a recent winner of the MacArthur 'Genius' grant—to talk about the tyranny of screens, his early adoption of crypto, and the importance, in every artist's life, of simply taking a break.

It really rocked my world. I had read Rilke's monograph of Rodin back in grad school 40 years ago, and have always wondered why someone had not written more about the relationship between these two men of vision, heart and artistic genius. To many Rilke is considered the greatest poet of the 20th century, and Rodin perhaps one of the greatest sculptures of all time. In particular, Rilke's masterpiece, "Letters to a Young Poet" spoke so deeply to me as a young aspiring poet/artist and musician - that it has shaped my own approach to life and art in deep ways, and remains (as it does for many) as one of my favorite gifts to give to young, aspiring creatives of all types. I was also going through a very difficult time when I read this book as we were entering the pandemic and it was as if Rachel was speaking directly to me through her thoughtful, wise and empathic prose. I have wanted to have her on the show for quite some time and I'm THRILLED she agreed. You won't be disappointed and PLEASE go buy this book and read it! If you want to experience Paris and the artistic/intellectual climate at the turn of the century - it will take you on a fascinating, wonderful journey - particularly with a caste of characters as diverse and extraordinary as Lou Andreas-Salome (Rilke's lover, mentor, guide and muse) and Camille Claudel (Rodin's gifted, brilliant and ultimately tragic muse) and so many others. Here is a bit more about Rachel: Rachel Corbett is the author of You Must Change Your Life: The Story of Rainer Maria Rilke and Auguste Rodin, which won the 2016 Marfield Prize, the National Award for Arts Writing. She has written for the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and New York Magazine, among other publications. She lives in Brooklyn. 2022.07.17 – 0563 – The Weird Things About Hearing Yourself Through Headphones Hearing yourself through headphones “Headphones take your ears from the side of your head and put them right in front of your mouthso you can hear exactly what you sound like to others.”Rachel Corbett, Podcast Trainer[1] Think about it, no-one else on earth hears our voice as we ourselves do. While an audience hears only the sound as vibrations through the air (either in person or via an electronic medium such as loudspeaker or headphones), we hear not only those vibrations through the air (at close range of course, through our ears just a few inches from our mouth), but also ‘internally' as a result of the vibrations and reflections of sound in our body's resonators (our chest, mouth and nasal cavities) and also through our skull bone. Only we hear that unique combination of sounds, and so we imagine that others hear us the same way as we hear ourselves. Until we hear a recording. And so, the sound of hearing your voice heard through speakers, headphones or on video for the first time can be unnerving: because we are hearing ourselves as others hear us. You should therefore be careful not to dismiss your voice as ‘funny', ‘not good enough' or ‘weird-sounding': that is your own perception and unlikely to be one shared by others who have always heard you that way. It's not that we don't like our voice, it's just the disconnect between not recognising it – and yet knowing that it is actually us. This episode's guest is Rachel Corbett, the author of a brilliant book called You Must Change Your Life, which tells the story of the brief and intense relationship between renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. In 1902, Rainer Maria Rilke was a delicate young visitor from Prague in Paris, he was broke and suffering from writer's block. He was commissioned to write a book on Rodin, who was already a renowned sculptor at the time, this is when everything changes You Must Change Your Life reveals one of the great stories of modern art and literature: Rodin and Rilke's years together as master and disciple, their heartbreaking rift, and moving reconciliation. In her vibrant debut, Rachel Corbett reveals how Rodin's influence lead Rilke to write his most celebrated poems and inspired his beloved Letters to a Young Poet. She captures the dawn of modernism with appearances by Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Lou Andreas Salome, George Bernard Show and Jean Cocteau. In this interview I also wanted to ask Rachel about how Rodin and Rilke changed HER life, how she discovered them, and what are her favourite poems by Rilke and her favourite sculptures by Rodin. I know this might sound cliche, but When I was reading this book I was getting a strong feeling as if I am reading the script for the second part of Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. Have you got a mountain of written content and you want to turn it into a podcast? Repurposing existing content on a blog or from a book is a great idea. But if you want to build an audience of highly-engaged podcast listeners (you do!), reading your content isn't a good way to go about it. Getting featured on other podcasts is one of the best ways to grow your audience because the easiest people to convert to listening to a new show are people who are listening to podcasts already. So how do you pitch yourself to other podcasters in a way that makes them think “I want this person on my show!” and not “I want this person to go away!” Getting your pitch right can be the difference between never getting a response and getting yourself in front of an audience of potential listeners who might be dying to check out your podcast. If you want to get the best possible audio in your podcast interviews it's important to use silence well. It might seem like a weird concept when a podcast is all about speaking. It seems the two topics people are most interested in when it comes to podcasting is money and numbers. So in this episode I'm focusing on the latter to hopefully make you feel a little bit better if you've been looking at your analytics thinking "Is that it??" Since download numbers aren't public, when you're a new podcaster it can feel like the only message you hear is from other shows yelling "We've hit (insert gigantic number here)!" This can be really disheartening but if you compare your downloads to what most podcasters are getting your little show is probably a lot more successful than you think. Remote recording platforms give you a way to record your show with people in different locations which is fantastic because your podcast isn't limited by geography. I get a lot of questions from people confused about whether they should launch their podcast with one or multiple episodes. At Mamamia, I grew the podcast network from 15 to over 35 shows, the team from two to nine producers and the audience to over 1 million unique listeners a month and over 90 million downloads which is more than quadruple where it was when I started. I've also hosted over ten podcasts with more than 2 million downloads including Lady Startup, Eligible, Before The Bump and You've Gotta Start Somewhere. You can find all my podcasts at rachelcorbett.com.au/podcasts. Getting featured in Apple's New & Noteworthy section has become something of an obsession for new podcasters. There's a lot of information floating around the internet suggesting you should release multiple episodes when you launch your podcast to trick the New & Noteworthy algorithm into featuring your show. In this episode I take you through whether that actually works and whether if you do get your show featured in New & Noteworthy it's everything it's cracked up to be. If you've been researching how to start a podcast you've probably come across the term "RSS Feed." If you don't know what it is, don't worry. To be a podcaster you don't need to know how your podcast RSS feed works, you just need to know where to find it and where to submit it so your show can be found by as many people as possible and that's what I take you through in this episode.
