Is crypto still bullish on play-to-earn?Play-to-earn cryptocurrency game Axie Infinity skyrocketed in popularity in 2020, with many of the newly onboarded users residing in the Philippines and Venezuela. The game provided a unique – though ultimately temporary – economic model that allowed users to earn an income while at home in lockdown. In the time since then, Axie suffered an exploit ultimately attributed to the North Korean Lazarus group and its users dropped off as the game lost its early profitability.CoinDesk columnist Leah Callon-Butler joins “Opinionated” hosts Ben Schiller, Danny Nelson and Anna Baydakova to chart Axie's recovery and predict what the future of the game might look like. The adult industry continues to face heavy stigma. Not only are they demoralised for what they do, they're excluded from the financial institutions that many of us take for granted. This makes it extremely difficult to secure a loan, get insurance and keep their business afloat. This episode we unpack how cryptocurrency offers financial autonomy for the adult industry. Mattias Hulting (Ramblin' Brands) walks us through his journey with the vibrator line, Smile Makers. Leah Callon-Butler (intimate.io) introduces us to their plan to cut out the financial gatekeepers, while Adrian Lee (University of Technology Sydney) weighs up the positives and negatives of cryptocurrency.

Leah Callon-Butler is one gutsy woman. This week in Part II of our podcast interview with Leah, we’re discussing the biased, unfair treatment that women (and men) in this industry repeatedly face from not being able to open a business bank account therefore having problems transacting, right down to the obvious dangers (like physical violence, denied payment and the passing of disease) of working in the business of swapping sex for money. We’re going to look in more detail at how Blockchain technology can address these. Cryptocurrency allows people the right to transact, whereas at the moment transacting in the adult industry is blocked by most advanced payment methods including banks, PayPal, Stripe and others. Pseudonyms allow people to set up a system for developing a truthful reputation. “Developing a reputation system is extremely powerful for building trust,” says Leah. With Blockchain technology, these issues can be addressed by ensuring that verified, if anonymous information created as a private pseudonym, can be securely stored in a ledger or data base that cannot be tampered with. Furthermore, Blockchain provides a means of payment which doesn’t rely on banks or biased online payment systems. Blockchain is a perfect use-case for this industry: providing both transparency of relevant information, and privacy for that information that both parties prefer to keep discreet.
“Most payment gateways outright refuse to deal with businesses that service the adult sector. Payment gateways hide behind assertions of fraud, which is a risk, but one that can be mitigated with identity solutions. In reality, payment gateways, or the banks that service them, avoid the industry due to perceived, and real reputational risk. Excerpted from the Intimate.io Whitepaper The interview with Leah Callon-Butler from intimate.io shed some much needed light on the condition of the adult industry with respect to payments, reputation and safety. Leah became heavily invested in blockchain after being involved with the renewable energy sector but soon learnt the adult industry was going to benefit dramatically from the implementation of blockchain technology. From renewable energy to dress to success and then to intimate.io, one thing stood out, Leah has every intention making the world a better place for women and particularly those in the adult industry who are facing extreme risk and payment issues daily. The porn industry alone is worth $97 Billion but payments to these services are often blocked, prohibited and often impossible. Leah discusses openly how workers need to take additional, often insufficient, security measures prior to meeting a client due to the risks. Leah goes on to discuss that due to most payment systems like Visa, PayPal and Stripe refusing to serve providers, that they are then forced to use specialist payment gateways which pass down operational costs and fees to providers. It brings an empathic understanding of the adult industry and how discrimination is heavily impacting on their right to safety, payment systems and earn a living. It's been said that the blockchain is a solution crying out for a problem. In our last episode we questioned its relevance. Today Intimate.io co-founder Leah Callon-Butler, presents that case that the adult industry, with the ability to be pseudonymous for one, may be one of the most fitting applications yet: paid encounters, that yes, may include sex. We also cover the recent US government crackdown on human trafficking and how it may make people less safe. https://intimate.io/
