Can a rural village in El Salvador actually replace the central bank?Host Jethro Toro hangs out with Mike Peterson and the founders of Bitcoin Berlin, Evelyn Lemus and Gerardo Linares. They talk about a grassroots movement that is changing how people use money. We explore the true story of El Zonte, where a project focused on community development built a true circular economy. They used the Lightning Network to make fast digital payments just to survive the pandemic proving the experts wrong years before big banks caught on.Evelyn and Gerardo explain exactly how they got a whole town excited about Bitcoin without asking the government for permission. We follow their journey from the coast to the mountains of Berlin. They are teaching high school students about decentralized finance so they can run their own independent systems instead of trusting apps to hold their money. They also highlight how El Salvador tourism is booming as Bitcoin fans visit to support local shop owners who are saving in Bitcoin. We also look at how they are fighting back against expensive money transfer companies. You will learn how a new project in La Laguna uses a local hardware store to help families send money home without paying Western Union's high fees. The team explains why they stopped using the government's Chivo wallet to use better open tools. They even share a new guide for anyone who wants to start a Bitcoin community in their own neighborhood.Subscribe to the channel to see the proof that this works, and leave a comment if you are ready to try a new way of using money.-Bitcoin Beach TeamConnect with Gerardo Linares and Evelyn Lemus:https://x.com/GR_Linares1 https://x.com/Evelynlemus2906 https://www.youtube.com/@BitcoinBerlinSV Connect and Learn more about Jethro Toro:https://x.com/JethroTorohttps://rumble.com/user/BitcoinCountry Support and follow Bitcoin Beach:X: https://www.twitter.com/BitcoinBeach IG: https://www.instagram.com/bitcoinbeach_sv TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@livefrombitcoinbeach Web: https://www.bitcoinbeach.com Browse through this quick guide to learn more about the episode:02:13 - The History of Bitcoin Beach 15:04 - Why El Zonte Switched to Lightning20:46 - How to Build a Bitcoin Circular Economy 32:00 - Living on a Bitcoin Standard in El Salvador 39:41 - Teaching Students to Run Nodes 47:51 - Replicating the Model in La Laguna 57:44 - Solving the Remittance Problem 1:09:58 - Building Bitcoin Network Effects Locally1:22:45 - Bitcoin Merchant Onboarding Guide PDFLive From Bitcoin Beach

We have paper money today because it functioned as an IOU, certifying that the holder could redeem it for an equivalent amount of physical gold or silver from the bank's vault. That’s where the English pound got its name as it matched a specific weight of gold (or silver). This was the gold standard, and this is how banks operated for centuries. But it was largely abandoned after World War I, when governments prevented the withdrawal of gold by suspending the convertibility of their paper money into gold to conserve national gold reserves for purchasing vital war supplies and to allow central banks to print money for financing massive military expenditures. Governments abandoned linking their money to anything at all, giving central banks full control over the money supply. Printing money has led to inflation, national debt, and financial instability, which ultimately fueled the creation of cryptocurrency like Bitcoin as a decentralized, mathematically-scarce alternative. What if things hadn’t happened this way? What if the gold standard survived the Great War? Today’s guest, Saifedean Ammous , imagines this scenario in his new book The Gold Standard: An Alternate Economic History of the 20th Century.” The story begins with a fictional divergence in 1911: French aviation pioneer Louis Blériot partners with the Wright brothers to create the Blériot Transport Corporation (BTC), an airplane-based, peer-to-peer gold-settlement network. This innovative system quickly becomes a secure alternative to central banks. When World War I starts, the BTC offers Europeans a way to export their wealth to neutral countries, escaping central bank war inflation. This triggers a global financial panic in September 1915, bankrupting the world's central banks, abruptly ending the war, and strangling fiat money in its cradle. With the collapse of central banking and the establishment of a free-market, decentralized gold standard, a radically different 20th century unfolds. Hard-money savings become plentiful and cheap, accelerating technological progress, increasing energy production, and fostering a world of appreciating money and declining prices. Without the ability to print money to fund expansive projects, governments become more accountable, transforming into mere service providers whose citizens expect better service at a lower cost. This thought-provoking narrative suggests that the absence of central bank financing could have prevented major 20th-century conflicts, eliminated chronic inflation, and ushered in a "Century of Affluence" based on lower time preference, long-term investment, and voluntary governance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Key Topics: Discovering Bitcoin through a scam. Building a Bitcoin circular economy around an orphanage and school. The role of Bitcoin as a medium of exchange in Africa. The vision behind GorillaSats and Bitcoin mining in Uganda. Adopting Bitcoin East Africa conference. Summary: Brendan, a Bitcoiner from Uganda, shares his journey into the Bitcoin space, which began in 2016 after discovering it through a scam. This led him to research Bitcoin and eventually build a Bitcoin-only company called GorillaSats. He emphasizes the importance of community and sharing knowledge in the Bitcoin space. His personal journey is intertwined with the evolution of his community, starting with sharing Bitcoin knowledge with friends, then university students, and eventually leading to the creation of a Bitcoin circular economy. Brendan recounts winning a ticket to BTC Prague in 2023 after pitching his circular economy idea, which he crowdfunded through Geyser. At the conference, he met Haman and Fernando, who inspired him to realize that he was already building a circular economy. Upon returning to Uganda, he focused on finding a place to build this economy, which led him to an orphanage already accepting Bitcoin. The orphanage became the perfect place to start, addressing the needs of the children and the community. They implemented the "Fruits for Sats" project, providing daily fruits to the children and paying with Bitcoin using bolt cards. They also improved the orphanage's premises, providing beds, mattresses, and paying for healthcare and tuition fees, all funded by Bitcoin donations. By the end of 2023, the project had received 1.4 BTC and significantly improved the lives of the children. However, they faced a setback when the owner of the school where the children attended decided to close it. Brendan and his team signed an agreement to use the school for two years and eventually bought it, planning to design a Bitcoin-focused curriculum and provide hands-on skills to the children. The orphanage and school are now fully Bitcoinized entities, with teachers being paid in Bitcoin. Brendan highlights the importance of addressing a community's problems with Bitcoin to facilitate its adoption. Brendan discusses the unique challenges faced by the community surrounding the orphanage, including a high ratio of children to adults, early marriages, and a lack of family planning. The orphanage was founded by a barren woman who wanted to give back and provide family love to orphaned children. The main causes of death in the community include poor health habits, AIDS, and drug abuse. Despite these challenges, the project has been successful in improving the health and well-being of the children. GorillaSats is a tourism company focused on East Africa, with a competitive advantage of saving clients money by accepting Bitcoin. Brendan explains that the company's name represents their belief in the tourism space in East Africa and their commitment to Bitcoin values. He sees SATs as the future layer of transaction in Africa. The company aims to remove the high transaction fees associated with traditional payment methods in the tourism industry. By accepting Bitcoin, GorillaSats saves clients and service providers money and enables instant payments. The company has also created a small merchant ecosystem in Uganda, where people can on-ramp and off-ramp via Lightning from GorillaSats. Brendan is piloting Bitcoin mining in Uganda, partnering with a local power generator who uses bio-waste and solar to generate electricity for a local community. The project aims to create a proof of concept for Bitcoin mining in the country, which has a lot of excess energy. GorillaSats also offers itineraries that combine tourism with visits to Bitcoin projects and energy sites. Looking ahead, Brendan will be at Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town in January and is organizing Adopting Bitcoin East Africa in June 2026 in Nairobi, aiming to connect and share knowledge among East African Bitcoin builders.
DeFi Dad and Nomadic break down the biggest lessons from 2025 and share their playbook for navigating crypto in 2026.Every cycle feels familiar yet completely different, and 2025 proved that again. Now we're looking ahead to what 2026 holds for crypto investors. In this episode:+ Why Bitcoin dominance stayed high and traditional cycle signals failed+ The year institutional adoption and friendly regulation became undeniable+ Our 7 predictions for 2026: ETH outperformance, stablecoins hitting $1T, RWA looping, agentic finance, and more+ Why patience and doing nothing might be your best edge in crypto------
In this episode, the 256 Foundation crew and developer d++ go deep on HydraPool, our open‑source Bitcoin mining pool stack, and the new HashDash and upcoming TeleDash dashboards powering the Telehash fundraiser stream. We unpack how HydraPool fits into the broader plan to open‑source the entire mining stack (hashboard, control board, firmware, and pool), its Rust-based design inspired by CKPool and P2Pool v2, and flexible payout models (solo, PPLNS, and multi-address coinbase). We also talk user experience tweaks for Telehash, like smoothing hash rate visualization, displaying best shares, units for difficulty, leaderboard ideas, and integrating Nostr npubs for social profiles. D++ walks through the HashDash visualizer and plans for TeleDash: real-time overlays for stream viewers and a separate jumbotron view showing total hash rate, active workers, funds raised (on-chain and Lightning), block height, BTC price, donation messages, odds, leaderboards, and instructions to point hash rate. We discuss stress-testing the pool to 10,000 workers, Prometheus data, and potential features like miner-type fingerprinting via user agents. We also touch on industry rumors around Bitmain's S23 air-cooled units, shifting manufacturer focus to hydro/data-center gear, hand‑me‑down hardware implications, and why open source is crucial as proprietary vendors change course. Finally, we preview Telehash (join at pool.256foundation.org:33303 with a valid BTC address), celebrate contributions to Samourai dev families, and tease hardware progress on Ember One, Mujina firmware, water-cooled blocks, Heat Punk Summit plans, and more; all with an open-source-first ethos to dismantle the closed mining monopoly.
This week we're looking at a set of stories that all circle the same uncomfortable question: who really has the power in crypto right now?
If the stories are to be believed, and the first casualty of war is truth and all that, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro sent some 3.6 million ounces of gold - $16 billion in today's money - to Switzerland before 2017, when the EU brought sanctions against Venezuela.Switzerland last week froze his accounts and the accounts of some 36 others with close ties. We don't know how much money he had in them, or how many accounts there were, but the figure doing the rounds is $10 billion. It has also emerged that Tether has been freezing “wallets identified as being involved in the Venezuelan oil trade.” As much as 80% of Petroleos de Venezuela's oil revenue is believed to be transacted in tether. This could be a total figure in the billions too.We also know that Venezuela was mining bitcoin for many years - when the price was a lot lower - but we don't know what they did with the coins. Did they fall into Maduro's hands? Were they sold? Were they held? The number doing the rounds here that it owns 600,000 BTC (~$60 billion). That would put Venezuela up there with Michael Saylor and Strategy. It's three times the 198,000 coins the US government itself is said to own. There's a seed phrase I'd like to know. Where are the keys, I wonder? And where did the proceeds of Venezuela's enormous oil, gold and other natural resource exports end up, exactly? Only some of them we know. At this point we remind you that the Venezuelan currency itself - the bolivar - collapsed in hyperinflation and has little to no value. Beware national currencies, particularly under socialist regimes. They don't last. There are several things I take away from all of this.First, the US dollar - whether via SWIFT or stablecoin - remains the number one international currency of choice, even for America's enemies.Second, tether and other US dollar stablecoins might be convenient - you don't have to use banks - but Tether will do what the US government tells it to do, and if the government wants your assets frozen, Tether will freeze them.Stablecoins, then, have a central point of failure. If someone can freeze them, they are not sovereign. And just as the US froze Russian US dollar assets after its invasion of Ukraine, so can and will it freeze the stablecoin assets of its enemies too. What did that 2022 freezing of Russian assets trigger? The mother of all bull markets in gold, and then silver and miners. What will this freezing trigger? A bull market in bitcoin. Possibly. Likely. It's already creeping back up.While the US does its geo-political, strategic, critical minerals thing, quaint old Western Europe is sinking deeper into higher taxes and - I'm sure they're coming eventually - capital controls. In fact, capital controls already exist in effect, banks are so heavily regulated and limiting of what you can send and to whom. The value of permissionless, international money just went up.You need to own money that they can't touch, whether by seizure or debasement.Meanwhile …Gold and silver continue to go bananas - the latter especially. So many roads lead to gold at the moment, it's hard to see when this stops. The inevitable debasement of national currencies off the back of uncontrollable government spending. Gold. Dedollarisation. Gold. Increasing geo-political uncertainty - Iran, Venezuela. Gold. Reshoring of US industry - highly inflationary. Gold. Revaluation of US gold holdings. Gold. Looming crisis from Japan as yields spike. Gold. China's ambitions for its currency and trade. Gold. Triffin's dilemma. Gold. AI putting everyone out of work leading to more money printing. Gold. Declining competence of and as a result faith in institutions worldwide. Gold. The dollar has now fallen to a 40% share of global central bank reserves, while gold is now at 30% on the back of its higher price and central bank accumulation. (Note currency and reserves are not the same). We are in a major capital rotational event the like of which occurs only every few decades.Typical portfolios are still underweight gold.If you live in a Third World Country such as the UK, I urge you to own gold or silver. The pound is going to be further devalued. The bullion dealer I recommend is The Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. More here.Own bothAs regular readers will know, I advocate owning both bitcoin and gold. The two assets have many similarities in that they are non-government, independent money. But the fundamental difference is that one is physical and one is digital. Both have their uses, and I have little patience with this notion that one must choose one or the other. In that regard, as with many others, my worldview is aligned with that of Charlie Morris (whose newsletters I urge you to subscribe to. There are lots of free options, including Atlas Pulse, which I love). Remember many years ago Charlie was calling for $7,000 gold by the end of this decade and many thought he was dotty. His call is looking perfectly sensible now, which it was - and which he is. Charlie previously managed a multi-billion-dollar fund for HSBC, before going solo. Aside from his newsletter, one his main endeavours has been BOLD, and he has been trying to get it listed for years. But the UK's Financial Conduct Authority is retarded.BOLD is a fund you can buy through a broker which is 75% gold and 25% bitcoin - all properly audited and backed, of course, with institutional-grade custody.Over the past five years, BOLD has returned 186%, while bitcoin has returned 202%, gold 128%, and equities 77%. The average return of bitcoin and gold together was 165%, yet BOLD was 21% ahead. This is because every month Charlie rebalances the portfolio, effectively buying more of whichever is the weaker asset to retain that 75:25 ratio. This act of rebalancing both strips out the volatility and increases the gains.Since Charlie first conceived of it in 2017, over pretty much any timeframe, BOLD (in blue) has beaten everything.Since its listing in Europe in 2022 BOLD has returned 123% since launch (in GBP to end 2025 including fees) compared to 111% for bitcoin and 113% for gold.It would have been nice to have been able to enjoy these gains in the UK. Thank goodness the FCA has protected us from them. Not for much longer.I was delighted to be at the London Stock Exchange yesterday to see the listing of this product which delivers “bitcoin-like returns with the lesser volatility of gold.”Congratulations, Charlie, for finally getting this listed. I wish you every success. Now we can actually invest.Obviously, if gold AND bitcoin both turn down, BOLD will suffer. But this is a classic buy-and-forget product, perfect for the Dolce Far Niente portfolio. You can own it in your pension, your ISA and it should become a mainstay of any portfolio. The 21Shares Bitcoin Gold ETP, BOLD, has the ticker LSE:BOLD.I am a buyer.PS some brokers such as AJ Bellend have only made this product available to pro investors. The broker I use is Interactive Investor, who are pretty good about getting these kinds of things live. If you open an account via this link you get a year's free. I am just on the phone to them now to get this listed.Disclaimer:The Flying Frisby is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or any other regulatory body as a financial advisor. Bitcoin is starting 2026 with a bang! After a volatile end to 2025, BTC has just reclaimed the $90,000 level, and technical indicators are flashing a "Massive Bullish Signal" that could mean the bears are finally exhausted.
Join Tommy Shaughnessy as he speaks with Nic Carter, partner at Castle Island Ventures, about his deep dive into the existential threat quantum computing poses to Bitcoin. After six months of intensive research and discussions with Nobel Prize-winning physicists, Nic breaks down why the "quantum threat" has moved from theoretical FUD to a material risk that the Bitcoin community is currently unprepared to face. They explore the "Q-Day" timeline, the vulnerability of Satoshi's 2 million BTC, and the urgent need for a migration to post-quantum cryptography. Can Bitcoin's rigid governance survive the most significant technical challenge in its history, or will sovereign nations and private firms reach the coins first?
Welcome to The Chopping Block — where crypto insiders Haseeb Qureshi, Tom Schmidt, Tarun Chitra, and Robert Leshner chop it up about the latest in crypto. It's a new year, and that means the crew is back with their annual year-end awards and predictions episode. First up: the 2025 winners and losers. From Trump's meme-coin windfall to Gary Gensler's legacy getting torched, from prediction markets going mainstream to Web3 getting its official eulogy — no one is safe. The team debates the biggest surprises (Circle's shocking IPO run, Ethereum's pivot under new leadership, Zcash's unlikely comeback), the best new mechanisms (ICO 2.0, DATs, federal preemption), and the year's best memes (including the Chopping Block's own tariff factory video). Then comes the flops and comebacks: AI agents that overpromised, Berachain's fall from grace, and Tether somehow winning again. Finally, the crew reviews how badly their 2025 predictions aged — spoiler: not great — and lays out fresh calls for 2026 including AI-powered hacks, stable-coin-funded AI capex, and equity perps taking over DeFi. New year, fresh takes, brutal honesty — let's get into it. Show highlights
