In this episode, Dr. Baron sits down with Rabbi Megan and Paige GoldMarche, a dedicated couple working within the Jewish communal space, to discuss the deeply personal and complex realities of their family-building journey. Together, they share the emotional, physical, and financial hurdles of facing infertility as a queer couple while holding a profound desire to build their future family. Megan and Paige reflect on the early days of their relationship, tracing the path from their initial meeting at a Shabbat dinner to a shared realization that they wanted to build a life together. Driven by a poignant sense of urgency tied to family health history and a deep desire for their future children to know their grandparents, they set out with a clear timeline. However, their plans were quickly challenged by the clinical realities of donor selection, expensive medical protocols, and the physical toll of consecutive unsuccessful intrauterine inseminations (IUIs). The conversation also explores the complex logistics unique to family building in LGBTQ+, including navigating insurance gaps, utilizing the open healthcare marketplace for secondary coverage, and shifting from local sperm banks to larger cryobanks in search of matching backgrounds. As the journey progressed from IUIs into the world of IVF, the physical and emotional burdens mounted for both partners. This episode captures the heart-wrenching moment of finally receiving a positive pregnancy test, only to immediately face the agonizing anxiety of non-doubling beta numbers and the impending grief of early loss. If you are navigating the heavy intersecting roads of LGBTQ+ family building, medical fertility treatments, or the quiet grief of early pregnancy loss, this episode is for you. About Rabbi Megan GoldMarche: Rabbi Megan grew up in the Chicago suburbs where she found her voice as a Jewish leader at her Conservative youth group and Reform summer camp. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 with a B.A. in Psychology and Women's Studies. Megan then went to work for the Hillel at Yale University where she discovered her passion for working with young people, and realized that rather than pursuing a PhD in Clinical psychology she wanted to use the Jewish tradition as a source of meaning to empower young adults to create their own rich Jewish identities and communities. Megan was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2014 and also received an MA in Jewish Gender and Women's Studies and a certificate in Pastoral Care and Counseling. Megan is an alumna of the Wexner graduate fellowship. Megan served as Senior Base Rabbi at Metro Chicago Hillel where she spent six years leading and building the thriving Base network for Jews in their 20s and 30s. She also has a passion for travel and outdoor adventure- which has currently led her to forty-eight of the fifty states in the US. Megan and her wife Paige, and their daughters Bri and Rori, live in Mt. Airy and loves hosting folks in their home for Shabbat and Holidays! Episode Summary In today's episode, Anna and Avery cover six major space and astronomy stories: the growing implications of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket explosion for NASA's lunar plans; China's surprise maiden flight of the Long March 12B reusable rocket plus the return of the Shenzhou-21 crew; Starship V3 being grounded by the FAA following Flight 12 — with SpaceX's IPO in the balance; the upcoming launch of NASA's Roman Space Telescope and its mission to find 100,000 new exoplanets; new research suggesting Earth remained a global magma ocean for up to half a billion years; and a stunning new Hubble image of galaxy M88 on a perilous journey through the Virgo Cluster. Story 1 — New Glenn Aftermath: NASA Moon Plans Under Threat Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket was destroyed on May 28 during a pre-launch static fire test at Launch Complex 36, Cape Canaveral. As of June 2, the damage to Blue Origin's lunar programme is becoming clear: the Blue Moon Mark 1 lander — scheduled to deliver Moon Base 1 hardware in autumn 2026 — now faces likely delays, and the crewed Blue Moon MK2 timeline may slip as a result. LC-36 is Blue Origin's only orbital pad; rebuilding will take considerable time. NASA had signed a new New Glenn launch agreement for Moon rovers just two days before the explosion. Sources: Space.com, Time Magazine, TechTimes (June 1–2, 2026) Story 2 — China's Long March 12B Debut + Shenzhou-21 Returns China's new Long March 12B rocket completed its maiden flight on June 1 from Jiuquan, deploying Qianfan constellation satellites in a no-advance-notice launch. The rocket — China's answer to the Falcon 9 — features a 20-tonne LEO capacity, a 5.2m fairing, kerolox propulsion, and dual independent flight computers ('dual brains'). No booster recovery on this flight, but planned for future missions. Developed in just 21 months. In other Chinese space news: the Shenzhou-21 crew (Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, Zhang Hongzhang) returned safely on May 29 after a record 210-day stay aboard Tiangong, landing in a Shenzhou-22 emergency rescue capsule after their original return craft was damaged by a suspected space debris strike. Sources: SpaceNews, Global Times, Xinhua (June 1, 2026) Story 3 — Starship V3 Grounded: FAA Mishap Investigation Following Flight 12 (May 22), the FAA has formally classified the Starship V3 debut as a mishap and grounded the vehicle. The Super Heavy booster failed its boostback burn and hard-splashed in the Gulf of America; one Raptor Vacuum engine on the upper stage also failed. SpaceX must complete an FAA-overseen investigation before Flight 13. This is Starship's seventh grounding in three years. A July–August return-to-flight window is cited; a booster catch may be skipped on Flight 13. SpaceX's IPO (ticker: SPCX, Nasdaq) was filed May 20 with shares potentially trading from ~June 12. Sources: SpaceNews, Aviation Week, TechCrunch (May 27–June 1, 2026) Story 4 — NASA Roman Space Telescope: 100,000 New Worlds NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is on track to arrive at Kennedy Space Center in June, with a launch target of early September 2026 — ahead of its May 2027 commitment. Over its five-year primary mission, Roman is expected to discover ~100,000 exoplanets, hundreds of millions of galaxies, and billions of stars, generating a 20,000-terabyte data archive. Its Galactic Bulge Survey will observe ~100 million stars in underexplored Milky Way regions. Roman also features a Coronagraph Instrument to directly image nearby exoplanets and test techniques for future Earth-analogue imaging. Sources: NASA.gov, ScienceDaily, SciTechDaily (June 1–2, 2026) Story 5 — Earth Was a Lava World for Half a Billion Years A preprint from researchers at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute (arXiv, June 2026) proposes that Earth's global magma ocean phase lasted up to 500 million years — far longer than previously assumed. Two key factors sustained the molten state: tidal heating from the newly formed, much-closer Moon; and a thick steam atmosphere that acted as a thermal blanket, slowing planetary cooling. The prolonged hot conditions would also have favoured the photochemical production of hydrogen cyanide — a key prebiotic molecule linked to the origin of RNA and amino acids. Sources: Universe Today, Phys.org (June 1, 2026) — preprint on arXiv Story 6 — Hubble Images M88 on a Perilous Virgo Cluster Journey NASA/ESA Hubble's June 2026 Picture of the Month features Messier 88 (M88/NGC 4501), a spiral galaxy 63 million light-years away in Coma Berenices. M88 is on a long inward journey through the Virgo Cluster, with a supermassive black hole ~100 million solar masses at its core. Ram pressure stripping is already depleting its cold gas reserves, visible as compressed gas on the galaxy's leading edge. In ~200–300 million years, M88 will make its closest pass to M87. Observed as part of Hubble program #18103 (PI: D. Thilker). When a dry-goods robbery in a river town leaves one clerk shot dead and two thieves drowned, a down-at-heel Ravenmill private eye is called in to put a name to the lone survivor — a soft-spoken scholar who keeps walking out of cages no man should be able to open.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-mancagescouldntholdTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: This episode is inspired by the case of Edward H. Rulloff (1819–1871), a Canadian-born polymath who lived as both a respected scholar and a career criminal. A doctor, lawyer, schoolmaster, photographer, inventor, and self-taught philologist, Rulloff devoted his life to a language manuscript he believed would revolutionize the field — work he financed through theft and largely wrote in prison cells. In 1844 his wife, Harriet Schutt, and their infant daughter, Priscilla, vanished from Lansing, New York. No bodies were ever found despite repeated dragging of Cayuga Lake, and Rulloff was convicted of abduction rather than murder, serving ten years in Auburn Prison. A later murder conviction was overturned on appeal, and he was ultimately freed. He moved to New York City, where he and his associates Albert Jarvis and Billy Dexter robbed stores, specializing in hard-to-trace sewing silk. On August 17, 1870, the three men broke into Halbert's dry goods store in Binghamton, New York. A clerk and night watchman, Fred Merrick, was shot dead during the struggle. Jarvis and Dexter drowned in the Chenango River while fleeing; Rulloff was captured after giving false names and hiding in a farm outhouse. He was recognized as the long-suspected Lansing killer, tried for Merrick's murder, and convicted of first-degree murder. His case drew national debate — Horace Greeley argued his intellect was too valuable to waste, while Mark Twain mocked the sentiment in a satirical letter to the Tribune. Rulloff was hanged on May 18, 1871. Before his execution he confessed to killing his wife with a medicine pestle but never admitted to harming his daughter, who some believed survived and was raised by his brother. His body was displayed, a death mask was made, and his head was kept for study; his brain remains part of the Wilder Brain Collection at Cornell University to this day.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. I usually play jazz piano, but on this particular day I was camping with my family — my wife, our two-year-old son, and our two medium-sized Japanese dogs. When I woke up, the scenery and the birdsong were so beautiful that I felt compelled to record the soundscape, and I naturally began playing piano along with it.Birdsong in Suwa District, Japan reimagined by Daisuke Matsubara.

A two-year-old named Tommy Lark vanished from a butcher's counter in Halverton's Coppergate Arcade in forty seconds, turned up two days later on a railway embankment two and a half miles away, and a hundred uniforms across the city couldn't put a name to the two figures in the closed-circuit film.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-boyinthebluejacketTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: On February 12, 1993, two-year-old James Bulger was led out of the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, England, while his mother paid for groceries at a butcher shop. He was walked two and a half miles on foot through Liverpool to a railway embankment in Walton, where his abductors beat him to death and laid his body across the tracks. He was found two days later. Roughly thirty-eight people had seen the three children together along the route; none intervened. Six days after the abduction, a woman recognized one of the boys from enhanced CCTV stills broadcast on national television and called Marsh Lane police station with two names — Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, both ten years old, both flagged on a truancy list that investigators had set aside on the assumption that the perpetrators were teenagers. The pair were arrested the same day and convicted at Preston Crown Court on November 24, 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. Both were released on life licence with new identities at age eighteen in June 2001 under a court order granting them lifelong anonymity. Robert Thompson has not reoffended. Jon Venables has been recalled to prison twice on child-pornography charges and remains in custody, with his most recent parole hearing held in February 2026.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. EPCOT's Canada Pavilion often feels like a space guests walk through rather than stay in. This week, Stephen reimagines it as a living cultural district inspired by Toronto's Kensington Market, where layered storytelling, music, and guest interaction turn the upper level of the pavilion into a constantly evolving environment. At the center of it all is a touring 4★Town concert experience that weaves through the pavilion and encourages exploration, culminating in a reworked theater and character moment that feels like part of the world rather than a separate show. The goal is simple: make Canada feel alive, repeatable, and worth returning to throughout the day.Plus, for the first time ever, we're featuring a listener-submitted Imagineering pitch from our new friend Cam Sullivan as he shares his concept for a new Mandalorian addition to Galaxy's Edge. And honestly… he's coming for our jobs.Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!
“It’s not just a job. It’s really a mission, a purpose to be part of something that really does contribute to the rest of the world. It’s healing for people. It’s love for people. It’s Spirit for people.” – Robin Linde Today’s episode is an exciting two-for-one. Robin Linde, Senior Director of Operations – Infrastructure, joins Drew for a video walkabout of Santa Sabina, Hoffman’s new retreat site. A ’97 Hoffman grad, Robin also sits down with Drew for a conversation about her relationship to the Process and to Hoffman. Robin and Drew After completing her Process, Robin worked for Hoffman for a short time before returning home to Minnesota to care for her aging grandparents. Her time at the Process helped her see that serving the world doesn’t have to be big and flashy. Robin’s service was to be with her grandparents, and ultimately with her grandmother, for ten years after her grandfather died. Upon her grandmother’s death, she returned to the Bay Area and to Hoffman for a second stint. Her timing impeccable, Robin returned to work for Hoffman for the fourth time in 2024. We were ready to renovate our newly acquired Santa Sabina. Someone with the right experience and a deep familiarity with Hoffman was needed to shepherd the renovation. Robin was perfect for the role. We’re excited to share Santa Sabina with you. Walk through Santa Sabina with us and hear some of its history and key features. Then, listen in to hear more of Robin’s story and why working for Hoffman is more of a mission than a job. We hope to welcome you into Santa Sabina one day soon, either for the Process or the Q2, our three-day graduate retreat. https://youtu.be/3tv1vL5qYKA Listen on Apple Podcasts More about Robin Linde Robin Linde is Senior Director of Operations – Infrastructure at the Hoffman Institute Foundation. She oversees retreat site operations across California, Connecticut, and Alberta, Canada. Robin also manages internal operations for Human Resources and IT. Robin brings a diverse professional background and unique operational experience supporting start-up companies and organizations going through periods of significant transition. She served as the primary liaison between Hoffman and the construction project team for the renovation and transition of Santa Sabina Center, overseeing the work from planning through execution and positioning the site for its next chapter of hosting Hoffman programs. More about Santa Sabina: Architect Arthur Constable Mother Raymond O’Connor, OP Nestled in the hills of San Rafael, California, historic Santa Sabina Retreat Center has roots dating back to 1939. It was named after the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill in Rome, the historic mother church of the Dominican Order. Santa Sabina was designed by architect Arthur Constable for Mother Raymond O’Connor, OP. The architecture is Tudor-Gothic, influenced by the Dominican Monastery at Stoke-on-Trent in England. It originally included a chapel, library, and courtyard garden. It served as a novitiate house of spiritual formation for women joining the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael until 1970. From 1970–2023, Santa Sabina was open to the public for retreats, fostering a space for meditation, reflection, and spiritual growth, serving thousands of guests of a variety of denominations. In 2024, the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael sold the property to the Hoffman Institute. Renovating it into a modern retreat center, Hoffman maintained its historic character, such as the chapel painting by E. Charlton Fortune. Thoughtfully redesigned for the next generation of seekers, the campus features a light-filled classroom, a welcoming dining hall and kitchen, and 47 private bedrooms designed for rest and renewal. In April of 2026, the first Hoffman Process was held in the newly renovated Santa Sabina Retreat Center. The former chapel, now de-sanctified and free of religious iconography, has been transformed into The Sanctuary. Reimagined as a space for Hoffman's non-religious spiritual work, The Sanctuary is where participants gather for reflection, transformation, and connection, a space that holds the essence of Hoffman's mission to nurture healing and awakening. Set on two secluded acres of landscaped grounds, Santa Sabina provides an environment for the Hoffman Process to continue fostering growth, discovery, and profound personal change well into the future. Two pairs of everything — body parts — turn up in three southern counties before anyone thinks to ask the quiet woman on the hog farm what was buried out behind the barn.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-twopairsofeverythingTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: THE VIOLA HYATT CASE (1959, ALABAMA)Viola Hyatt was a 30-year-old farm woman living with her father Martin on a hog farm near White Plains, Alabama. Raised by a cruel, sickly mother who told her daily she was a curse, Viola grew up isolated, heavy-set, and physically strong from butchering the family's hogs herself — a job she took over from her father as a teenager. When her father rented a small trailer on the property to two construction workers — brothers Emmett and Lee Harper, both WWII veterans (one a Bataan Death March survivor) — the arrangement turned ugly. The brothers sexually abused Viola, beat her father when he objected, and treated the family with contempt. Viola endured it for months. On the morning of June 27, she loaded her father's 12-gauge shotgun, walked to the trailer, and shot both men in the face. She then used the double-bit axe from the barn to dismember the bodies, loaded the parts into the brothers' own 1957 Ford, and drove all night through three Alabama counties — Calhoun, Etowah, and Cleburne — scattering arms, legs, and torsos along roadsides, in briar patches, and in the Tallapoosa River. The bodies were so disfigured that police couldn't identify them for 17 days. They called the victims "Mr. X" and "Mr. Y." The case broke when the construction foreman recognized police sketches and connected them to a phone call Viola had made claiming the brothers were tending to a sick mother. Police found blood in the trunk of the car, the buried axe, and damage to the trailer door — and after a six-hour interrogation, Viola confessed. She was evaluated at Brice Mental Hospital, found sane, and pled guilty in March of the following year to avoid the electric chair. She received a life sentence. She never explained her motive beyond saying the abuse "wasn't the main reason" — it was "worse than that." She refused interviews for the rest of her life. Paroled in 1970, she lived quietly in a trailer park until her death in 1992, taking whatever the full story was to the grave.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. How This Is Building Me, hosted by world-renowned oncologist D. Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, is a podcast focused on the highs and lows, ups and downs of all those involved with cancer, cancer medicine, and cancer science across the full spectrum of life's experiences. In this episode, Dr Camidge sat down with Charles D. Blanke, MD, FACP, FASCO, a professor of medicine in the School of Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute in Portland.Drs Camidge and Blanke discuss Dr Blanke's unique career path from pioneering targeted cancer therapies to becoming a leading advocate for medical aid in dying. A Type 1 diabetes diagnosis directed Dr Blanke toward an interest in internal medicine and oncology. During his fellowship and early faculty days, he established a reputation for his hard work pursuing research opportunities, even when initial projects were unsuccessful.Blanke's most transformative scientific achievement occurred at OHSU, where he spearheaded the use of Imatinib (Gleevec) for the management of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). By targeting the KIT mutation, this research turned a previously untreatable malignancy into one with a high response rate, marking a landmark moment for personalized oncology.Equally significant in Dr Blanke's career is his role in medical aid in dying. Practicing in Oregon, the first state to legalize the option, he has written hundreds of prescriptions for patients with terminal diseases. Blanke views medical aid in dying as a vital extension of patient care.As the former chair of SWOG, Dr Blanke modernized clinical research by introducing term limits, increasing access to clinical trials among, and championing the development of pragmatic trials with broader patient eligibility criteria. Throughout his tenure, he emphasized the importance of patient advocacy and the altruistic nature of cooperative research. Having recently stepped down from his leadership at SWOG, he intends to focus his future efforts on patient rights and medical aid in dying advocacy.

Patellar Luxation Reimagined: Shifting the Treatment Paradigm with Dr. David DycusPatellar luxation is one of the most commonly diagnosed orthopedic conditions in dogs—but are we thinking about it all wrong? In this episode of the PetAbility Podcast, we revisit this familiar condition through a very different lens with veterinary orthopedic surgeon David Dycus, DVM, MS, CCRP, DACVS-SA. Rather than focusing on the basics of diagnosis and grading, Dr. Dycus shares emerging insights that challenge conventional thinking about what truly drives patellar instability and dysfunction - and the profound arthritic changes that this alignment mismatch may lead to over time - by treating each case individually.Together, we discuss: What are the limitations of the traditional patellar luxation treatment model Why eliminating grading of patellar luxation offers a broader perspectiveHow alignment of the proximal limb (femur) and distal limb (tibia) affects patellar stability and why 3D imaging via CT scan is key How biomechanics and functional movement are reshaping treatment considerations How surgical decision-making is evolving through a patient-specific approach How the shift toward more non-traditional surgical corrections is resulting in better short-term and long-term prognosis Why collaborative care, rehabilitation & conditioning are more vitally important for best outcomes The future of patellar luxation management in veterinary medicineThis episode is ideal for veterinarians, rehabilitation professionals, veterinary students, breeders, trainers, and dedicated pet owners interested in the future of canine orthopedic care. If you thought patellar luxation was “just a minor knee problem,” this conversation may completely change your perspective.Click for more information about Dr. Dycus and his practice, Fusion Veterinary Orthopedics. This “Best of the Year Thus Far” episode of Making Risk Flow brings together 11 standout conversations that map how insurance is being reshaped in real time. Across the conversations with AI leaders, risk modelers, and operators, a clear pattern emerges: the gap between leaders and laggards is widening, driven by speed of execution, not just strategy. Industry leaders explore how richer context, whether through spatial intelligence, stateful systems, or agentic workflows, is transforming underwriting from a static, data-driven exercise into a dynamic, decision-driven discipline. But technology alone isn't the answer. Culture, incentives, and human relationships remain critical to unlocking value. Together, these insights reveal an industry shifting from managing risk as a probability to understanding it as a living, evolving system.Fan Mail: Got a challenge digitizing your intake? Send Rachel a text message. If you've ever felt like you're “doing manifestation wrong”… this might shift everything. In this episode, we move beyond vision boards and wishful thinking to explore a deeper truth: You are not separate from what you're trying to manifest. We talk about: • why traditional manifestation (think The Secret) can feel limiting • how non-dual awareness changes everything • why language matters (“wanting” vs. “being”) • how to actually work with the field instead of waiting on it • the power of synchronicities as confirmation—not coincidenceThis is manifestation without pressure, performance, or perfection.
Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on Caroline Davis, a saxophonist and composer based in New York. Her new album, Fallows, just came out on Ropeadope Records. Caroline made it alone during a residency in Ucross, Wyoming - improvising and recording in a cabin, using prepared saxophone techniques and a unique little instrument called an Organelle to process and build sounds she'd never put to tape before. From early skepticism to becoming an indispensable "midfield pillar" in gloves, David Raya's journey at Arsenal is a masterclass in modern goalkeeping. In this episode, we dissect Raya's record-breaking rise, including his stunning 18 clean sheets in the 2025/26 season and his role as the "spark" for Mikel Arteta's attack. We explore the tactical philosophy of a keeper who views the pitch like a playmaker, the psychology of his calming presence, and how his permanent signing in 2024 (and personal milestones like his 2025 wedding) cemented his status as an Emirates icon. The result is twelve tracks that use the saxophone as raw material rather than a lead voice. We talk about how that music got made, what it means to deliberately avoid the sound of your own instrument, and Caroline's work teaching music inside Sing Sing prison.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Caroline Davis's album Fallows )—Dig DeeperArtist and AlbumVisit Caroline Davis at carolinedavis.orgPurchase Caroline Davis's Fallows from Ropeadope Records, Bandcamp, or Qobuz, and listen on your streaming platform of choiceLabel and ResidencyRopeadope RecordsUcross Foundation — the Wyoming artist residency where Fallows was recordedCivitella Ranieri Foundation — the Italian residency Caroline attended in 2025Tulu Bayar — Turkish artist who made the paper artwork for Fallows (please verify link)Instruments and TechnologyThe Organelle — Critter & Guitari — the hardware synthesizer/processor central to FallowsORAC by Technobear — Patchstorage — the community-built patch framework Caroline used on the recordCollaborators, Influences, and ReferencesSteve Lacy — soprano saxophonist (1934–2004), honored in the track "Lacy Steve"Geri Allen — pianist and mentor; "Barbara Allen (for Geri)" closes the albumThích Nhất Hạnh — Vietnamese Buddhist monk; a sample of his voice appears on "She Know She Is Water"Connie Crothers — pianist from the Lennie Tristano lineage; a sample of her playing appears on "Cloudburst"Lee Konitz — Caroline's teacher; alto saxophonist (1927–2020)Sam Newsome — soprano saxophonist; prepared saxophone pioneer cited by Caroline as a major influenceChristine Abdelnour — French experimental alto saxophonist; a formative reference for prepared saxophone techniqueAnna Webber — saxophonist and composer, cited for her work with venting vocabularyJames Falzone — clarinetist whose solo tour performance is discussed in the episodeKris Davis — pianist and founder of Pyroclastic Records; cited as a touchstone for prepared pianoSylvie Courvoisier — pianist cited for her prepared piano work (please verify link)Qasim Naqvi — New York-based composer and modular synthesist; a frequent collaboratorLabels and Organizations — Current ListeningOut of Your Head Records — Adam Hopkins's artist-run label; praised in the episodePyroclastic Records — Kris Davis's artist-run label; praised in the episodeAdvocacy and JusticeMusicambia — the organization through which Caroline teaches music at Sing Sing Prison and other facilitiesFREER Records — nonprofit label for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated musicians; Caroline is on the boardKeith LaMar — keithlamar.org — death row prisoner in Ohio whose execution is scheduled for January 13, 2027; wrongfully convicted per advocatesJalil Muntaqim — political prisoner (Black Panther Party) with whom Caroline corresponded; released from prison in 2020The New School — Jazz & Gender course — co-taught by Caroline Davis and Sarah Elizabeth Charles—Dig into this episode's complete show notes at podcast.thetonearm.com—• Did you enjoy this episode? Jesus flips our definition of power—true greatness isn't about being served, but serving others. Real power is a life laid down, following the example of Christ.
A self-styled prophet sits headless at his own desk, his wife and four children butchered in the rooms above, and a basement chapel filled with altars and tagged offerings that no church ever blessed. The Ravenmill police call in a private eye with a taste for the strange — and the only honest witness left in the house is a single bloody fingerprint on the brass. EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-headlessprophet/THE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: On July 3, 1929, real estate agent Vincent Elias arrived at the home of Benny Evangelista on Saint Aubin Street in Detroit and found a scene that would baffle investigators for decades. Evangelista — a self-proclaimed Divine Prophet who sold spells, hexes, and spiritual cures from a basement chapel filled with papier-mâché planets and a crude altar — sat decapitated at his desk, his head arranged on the floor among framed post-mortem photographs of his deceased son. Upstairs, his wife Santina and their four children, ages 18 months to seven years, had been slaughtered in their beds with an ax. Police pursued three theories: extortion letters from the fading Black Hand criminal network; a tenant named Umberto Tecchio who had visited the night before and whose barn yielded a suspiciously clean ax and banana knife; and Evangelista's old occult partner Aurelius Angelino, who had murdered his own children with an ax in 1919 and escaped from a Pennsylvania asylum for the criminally insane in 1923, never to be seen again. A bloody fingerprint on the front doorknob was the only physical evidence preserved at the scene, and it never matched any suspect. The case was eventually shelved as cold and remains officially unsolved nearly a century later. The Evangelista house was demolished years ago, but locals still speak of disembodied screams and a headless figure walking the empty lot.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. Faith Food Fellowship | Self-care Strategies for Busy Christian Women
What if the reason your quiet time feels inconsistent has nothing to do with your discipline, and everything to do with your expectations?Because many busy Christian women aren't actually struggling to show up for God… they're struggling with what they believe showing up is supposed to look like. And when the moment doesn't feel peaceful, focused, or meaningful enough, it quietly starts to feel like it doesn't “count.”That creates a cycle most women don't even name: you try to do it right, it doesn't feel right, so you either push harder or pull away, and both leave you feeling disconnected. But what if the problem isn't your consistency… what if it's the pressure you've attached to it?In this episode, you'll learn to lower the pressure, not the pursuit, and discover a simpler, more sustainable way to stay connected to God in real life, not ideal conditions.Scriptures Referenced in this Episode1 Samuel 16:7James 4:8 Recipes Mentioned in this EpisodeA mini charcuterie board for one Join the Community here.Let's Connect:Email: hello@p31virtues.com

Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Ryan Wilson. Co-founder and CEO of The Gathering Spot (TGS), joins host Rushion McDonald to discuss his entrepreneurial journey, the creation and expansion of The Gathering Spot, and the broader mission of building community, economic opportunity, and cultural pride for Black professionals and creatives. Wilson explains that while TGS officially opened in Atlanta in 2016, the idea began years earlier when he was a law student in Washington, D.C. What started as a reimagining of the traditional private city club became a national platform combining community, collaboration, events, workspaces, and eventually fintech tools. Despite major obstacles—most notably being rejected by 97 potential investors—Wilson persisted, driven by a clear sense of purpose and belief in the unmet needs of Black and minority communities. The conversation highlights Atlanta’s importance as the launch city, the power of community-driven spaces, and the need to move beyond performative diversity efforts toward sustainable, scalable Black-owned businesses. Purpose of the Interview The primary purpose of the interview is to: Inspire entrepreneurs, especially young and underrepresented founders, to pursue their ideas despite resistance. Explain the mission and impact of The Gathering Spot as more than a coworking space—positioning it as a cultural, economic, and social hub. Encourage long-term thinking about Black business growth, community wealth, and access to financial tools. Provide real-world lessons about fundraising, resilience, leadership, and community building. Key Takeaways 1. Success Is a Process, Not an Overnight Event Wilson emphasizes that The Gathering Spot took years of planning, pitching, and rejection before launching. The popular narrative of “instant success” hides the real work required. Takeaway: Consistency and belief matter more than early validation. 2. Rejection Can Be a Signal You’re Early—Not Wrong Wilson was told “no” 97 times before securing his first investor. Instead of discouragement, he saw rejection as proof that he was pursuing something others couldn’t yet see. Takeaway: If everyone understands your idea immediately, you might not be pushing far enough. 3. Atlanta Was a Strategic and Cultural Choice Atlanta was selected because of its Black leadership, business ecosystem, cultural influence, and sense of communal support. Wilson describes the city as both big and intimate—ideal for relationship building. Takeaway: Location matters, especially when building community-centered businesses. 4. The Gathering Spot Is About Belonging and Pride TGS intentionally celebrates Black culture while remaining open to all. The experience is designed to feel warm, affirming, and professional—something many members had never encountered in adult spaces. Takeaway: Spaces are never neutral; design should be intentional about who feels welcomed and valued. 5. Community Is the Product While TGS offers buildings, events, restaurants, and workspaces, Wilson is clear that the network is the real value—introducing people who otherwise may never meet. Takeaway: Relationships create opportunity faster than resources alone. 6. Fintech Is About Real Access, Not Just Education Wilson explains that after years of hosting conversations about money and wealth, TGS realized the next step was providing actual financial tools, not just dialogue. Takeaway: Empowerment requires both knowledge and access. 7. DEI Without Results Is Performative Wilson and McDonald discuss the post-2020 slowdown in corporate DEI efforts. Wilson challenges organizations to focus less on optics and more on outcomes—specifically business scale and job creation. Takeaway: The goal isn’t to “look good losing,” but to win sustainably. Notable Quotes On rejection: “It was 97 people that told us no in a row before we got to our first yes.” On purpose: “My mission is to connect people. I’m a community builder.” On fear and timing: “I didn’t want to have any regrets about not trying.” On intentional design: “I was thinking about Black folks when we were building The Gathering Spot.” On DEI efforts: “Do you really want to win or look good losing?” On scale and impact: “It’s not enough to start Black-owned businesses—we have to watch them grow.” #SHMS #BEST #STRAWSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
