In this episode of My Rock Moment, we're diving deep into one of rock and roll's most legendary what-could-have-beens… and what-finally-was. Back in 1966, fresh off the groundbreaking success of Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson set out to create his magnum opus: Smile. With poet and lyricist Van Dyke Parks at his side, the project promised to be a revolutionary leap forward—a kaleidoscopic, avant-garde album that would redefine what pop music could be. But as recording progressed, the pressure from within the band, the label, and Brian's own mental health struggles led to the album's unraveling. The sessions were shelved, and Smile became one of music history's greatest mysteries—a “lost” album that haunted fans, scholars, and Brian himself for decades. That is, until the early 2000s, when Smile finally got its moment in the sun. Reimagined and completed by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks nearly 40 years later, the album was not only resurrected—it was performed live, recorded, and finally released, closing the loop on one of rock's most mythical stories. Joining us to unpack it all is David Leaf—acclaimed writer, director, producer, and longtime friend of Brian Wilson. David has chronicled Brian's life and legacy for decades, and in his new book, SMiLE: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Brian Wilson, he brings fresh insight into Smile's rise, fall, and miraculous comeback. In this episode, we delve into the complex life of Anna Nicole Smith, born Vickie Lynn Hogan in 1967 in small-town Texas. From her humble beginnings as a high school dropout and single mother working at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken, to her meteoric rise as a Playboy Playmate and Guess jeans model, Smith's early career exemplified the classic American dream of reinvention and success against all odds. By the mid-1990s, Smith had become a household name, but her personal life drew even more attention when she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994. The 63-year age gap between them sparked widespread speculation about Smith's intentions, leading to a bitter inheritance battle following Marshall's death that would eventually reach the Supreme Court. We explore how this legal saga became emblematic of the public's fascination with and judgment of Smith throughout her career. Despite the controversy surrounding her marriage, Smith continued to build her brand, starring in her own reality show "The Anna Nicole Show" and maintaining her status as a pop culture icon. However, behind the scenes, Smith struggled with prescription drug dependency, weight fluctuations, and the harsh spotlight of tabloid scrutiny. We examine how these pressures affected her mental health and public persona during these tumultuous years. February 2007 marked both a moment of joy and devastating loss in Smith's life. Just months after giving birth to her daughter Dannielynn, she experienced the heartbreaking death of her 20-year-old son Daniel. Before she could fully process this tragedy, Smith herself died of an accidental drug overdose at age 39, setting off another round of legal battles over paternity rights and inheritance. This episode explores the sad irony that in death, as in life, Smith remained a subject of legal disputes and media speculation. Anna Nicole Smith's legacy remains complicated—part cautionary tale, part celebration of a woman who defied expectations and created herself anew. Through interviews with those who knew her and cultural critics who've studied her impact, we attempt to look beyond the caricature to understand the real woman behind the headlines and her enduring influence on conversations about celebrity, wealth, and the price of fame in America. Before his rise to national prominence and eventual disgrace, Agnew's story began generations earlier in the Mediterranean hills of southern Greece and the Protestant communities of colonial-era Virginia and Pennsylvania... In 711 an Arab and Berber army crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and invaded the Iberian Peninsula. Seven years later, their conquests had birthed the Muslim kingdom of al-Andalus. This marked the beginning of roughly 8 centuries of Moorish rule, during which al-Andalus became a conduit for the transmission of knowledge between the Islamic world and Europe.Joining us today is Brian Catlos, a Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder and the author of 'Kingdoms of Faith: A New History of Islamic Spain'. Pedro unpacks the ongoing battle between Bayesian and Frequentist approaches, explaining why probability is one of the most misunderstood concepts in AI. He delves into Bayesian networks, their role in AI decision-making, and how they powered Google's ad system before deep learning. We also discuss how Bayesian learning is still outperforming humans in medical diagnosis, search & rescue, and predictive modeling, despite its computational challenges. The conversation shifts to deep learning's limitations, with Pedro revealing how neural networks might be just a disguised form of nearest-neighbor learning. He challenges conventional wisdom on AGI, AI regulation, and the scalability of deep learning, offering insights into why Bayesian reasoning and analogical learning might be the future of AI. We also dive into analogical learning—a field championed by Douglas Hofstadter—exploring its impact on pattern recognition, case-based reasoning, and support vector machines (SVMs). Pedro highlights how AI has cycled through different paradigms, from symbolic AI in the '80s to SVMs in the 2000s, and why the next big breakthrough may not come from neural networks at all. From theoretical AI debates to real-world applications, this episode offers a deep dive into the science behind AI learning methods, their limitations, and what's next for machine intelligence. Whenever I hear 1804-Haitian-fanatics—those who shout with fevered breath about the glories of the Haitian Revolution, about the unshakable Christophe, the unbreakable Dessalines, the brilliant Louverture—I think about something James Joyce once wrote, something about heroism and the lie that holds it together: “Do you not think the search for heroics damn vulgar? I am sure however that the whole structure of heroism is, and always was, a damned lie and that there cannot be any substitute for individual passion as the motive power of everything.” And maybe he was right. Maybe all the grand statues, all the history book renderings of Haitian men and women who lived and fought and bled—maybe they were always meant to obscure something harder to face: that there are no perfect person, no unblemished saviors, no mythic warriors who moved through the world without doubt, without error, without contradiction. That the stories we Haitians tell ourselves, the way we flatten our historical figures into marbles, the way we sand off their edges, all of it is less about truth and more about our comfort. That's what struck me reading Dr. Marlene Daut's “The First and Last King of Haiti.” It isn't a portrait built for worship. Christophe emerges not as an untouchable legend but as a man—a man who built, a man who ruled, a man who inspired and also a man who made shitloads of mistakes, who punished, who carried the weight of the impossible on his shoulders. There is no neat symmetry to his life here, no easy moral at the end. But there is something real, something tangible. There is a man who shaped history and was, in turn, shaped by it. And this is where I think Joyce and the 1804 purists miss each other. Heroism, as an idea, is flawed because we are all flawed. But Haitian history does not belong to those who refuse to see the fullness of its historical figures. It belongs to those Haitians who can hold contradiction, who can see Christophe not as some distant legend but as a man who, for all his flaws, left something behind that still stands. And maybe that is the only kind of heroism worth anything at all. --------INTRO MUSIV-------------------- Neg Mawon Theme: by Dr. Roch Ntankeh Language: Medumba from West Cameroon African Nation Affiliation: Bamileke Musical Genre: Mangabeu Licensed to: Nèg Media Inc Lyrics Tell me the story/Give me the news/Listen to Neg Mawon Listen to the story of the land/Listen to the history of Haiti/People of St Domingue where are you?People of Haiti where are you?/Come listen to the history/Come listen to the story/Where are the scholars? Madam C.J. Walker was a brilliant entrepreneur who built a haircare empire and became the first African-American woman millionaire. You might have heard about her, but not many people know that her headquarters used to be located in Indianapolis, along a once vibrant Black corridor called Indiana Avenue, a place that today is known for parking lots, high-speed traffic, and uninspiring university buildings. Why do so few people know this story? Because, over decades, government planners and private developers slowly and systematically erased Indiana Avenue's history. Luckily, however, some Black Hoosiers are working to uncover, and reclaim, what almost disappeared without a trace. In this episode, we tell their, and the Avenue's, story. GUESTS: A'Lelia Bundles, Journalist and Madam C.J. Walker biographer Susan Hall Dotson, Indiana Historical Society Claudia Polley, Urban Legacy Lands Initiative Wildstyle Paschall, artist and community advocate Devon Ginn, Walker Legacy Center Mr. Thomas Hart Ridley, centenarian and Indiana Avenue author The post Urban Roots: Madam Walker and the Rise & Fall of Indiana Avenue appeared first on KPFA.

By Abbe Borg, see previous stories by him here. ApeCoin (APE) has had a rollercoaster ride, cementing itself as a key player in the Web3 ecosystem. Launched as a governance and utility token for the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem, APE is designed to support gaming, commerce, and decentralized communities. It's backed by Yuga Labs, the creative powerhouse behind BAYC, and remains one of the most recognized tokens in NFT and gaming circles. ApeCoin: The rubberball token? In a recent interview, crypto blogger and industry analyst David Hoffman noted, "Tokens like ApeCoin showcase the cultural side of blockchain, where community ownership meets tangible applications in entertainment and gaming. Despite market conditions, it's these experiments that keep the Web3 dream alive." Recent Developments The current price of ApeCoin stands at $1.28, showing a 3.05% gain in the last 24 hours. APE has seen increased interest with growing ecosystem developments, particularly in gaming and metaverse projects under Yuga Labs. Additionally, APE powers ApeCoin DAO, giving holders a say in the token's future initiatives, which include funding ecosystem projects and partnerships. Market Action: Technical Analysis As of this week: Price Action: ApeCoin is trading near the $1.28 mark, with a daily range of $1.27 to $1.32. It has seen a modest recovery from its recent 52-week low of $0.48, but it's still far from its all-time high of $26.70 set in April 2022. Resistance Levels: Immediate resistance lies at $1.35. Breaking past this level could see APE challenge $1.50 in the short term. Support Levels: $1.20 is a strong support zone. A drop below this could signal bearish sentiment, potentially retesting $1.00. Indicators: RSI is neutral at 51, suggesting APE isn't overbought or oversold. The MACD line's recent bullish crossover hints at potential upward momentum, though with modest conviction. Challenges and Opportunities The token faces criticism for its high reliance on speculative demand, particularly as the NFT hype has cooled. Regulatory scrutiny over governance structures like ApeCoin DAO also looms as a potential challenge. However, ApeCoin's integration into Yuga Labs' projects, such as Otherside Metaverse, positions it uniquely within the intersection of gaming, NFTs, and decentralized finance. The Bottom Line ApeCoin remains a speculative asset but offers exposure to some of the most prominent Web3 initiatives. While the token's price has struggled in the bear market, its utility within Yuga Labs' ecosystem and its DAO governance model keep it relevant. Traders and investors should keep a close watch on upcoming developments, particularly the adoption metrics within gaming and NFT communities. As always, approach with caution, stay informed, and understand that Web3 is as much about the tech as it is about the communities rallying behind it. Much has been said about the fall of Vine, with many commentators and experts putting it down to the lack of monetisation strategies on the platform. However, another important (yet often overlooked aspect) was how the platform treated creators. As Vine's management failed to take the concerns of these users seriously, this encouraged many of Vine's top creators to deprioritise Vine or move platforms, ultimately decreasing its cultural influence. Today, we are breaking down the insurance giant AIG. AIG's story is one of a remarkable turnaround, a tale of a global insurance giant emerging from near collapse during the great financial crisis. Over nearly two decades, AIG has transformed itself into a more focused and efficient property and casualty insurer. To grasp the magnitude of AIG's journey, consider this: During the financial crisis, the company required a $180 billion bailout from the U. S. government, a sum it fully repaid with interest. To help tell the story of AIG's transformation and its current position, I'm joined by Austin Hawley, Portfolio Manager at Diamond Hill. Today, under Peter Zaffino's leadership, AIG has refocused its underwriting efforts, returning to profitability while divesting noncore businesses, including the demerger of its life insurance arm, Corebridge. The AIG of today stands as a near pure play specialty insurer with a focus on achieving top-quartile industry returns.
