Sarah went camping with her family and it was predictably calamitous in the best way possible. We hear why kids don't ride bikes anymore, parents are chauffeurs, and why it matters. We talk about how much camp meant to Sarah growing up and then as a counselor, and we lament that tragedy in Texas at the Christian camp. Sarah explains why customer service is so bad now, why you shouldn't accept it, and what you can do about it. Plus, she describes a genius way we can band together and combat the "sludge" of customer service quagmires.0:29 - Sarah's planning something romantic.5:12 - The Rice family's calamitous camping trip.16:51 - Article: Kids are missing out on things we used to do all the time. 28:58 - Wes Bergmann told Sarah....30:42 - Susie and Sarah discuss the tragic Texas floods. 38:13 - They do it on purpose! Sergeant Marlon Marrache recently retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after 24 years of service. He now is focused full time on helping agencies and individual officers understand the internal affair process. Marlon's 24 years at LAPD included 12 years of Police Misconduct Investigation, adjudication, and examination experience. Much of his experience comes from when Marlon was assigned to Internal Affairs (IA) in a prosecutorial role, representing the Chief of Police conducting Board of Rights, a unique Tribunal Hearing (the only agency with such a process in the nation). The numerous cases he tried involved “False & Misleading” allegations and termination was at issue. However, Marlon has also been assigned to Officer Representation Section (ORS) defending, representing the rank and file in Skelly Responses and most important, during the administrative process in an OIS or other critical incidents. Marlon ensured IA Investigators were not violating the Peace Officer Bill of Rights Act (POBRA). In 2023, Marlon launched a podcast called The IA GUY A Police Podcast. Marlon interviews guests who have been on all sides of an I.A., from investigators to the subject officers themselves. Further, Marlon provides analysis on critical incidents through the lens of an IA. This podcast is the only place you can get “transparency” and a behind the scenes look into what really happens in IA investigations including the process. 3:18 - Today's Topic Breakdown - It's a Documentary Roundup on today's show, with Sooz Reviews of the My Mom Jayne, the latest installment of Trainwreck (Poop Cruise! Oh my!), and Sally Ride. We learn how Jayne Mansfield was a victim of a Hollywood system that objectifies women and society's decision to put women, especially beautiful women, into a very small box, and the ways secrets can tear families apart. We discuss the cruise that lost power and became a floating toilet in short order, and our theories about why the passengers got along and left with pretty good memories anyway. We talk about astronaut and badass bitch Sally Ride, and how the very reasons she became a trailblazer also made her hard to get to know and somewhat unlikable. Plus, we hear about the "birthday effect" where people are more likely to die on their birthdays, and we learn whether it's actually true or an illusion, and if it's true, why that might be.3:18 - Episode Table Of Contents7:34 - Susie and Sarah on the field at the Pirates game11:06 - Our favorite makeup ever13:40 - Jayne Mansfield Documentary23:40 - Poop Cruise Documentary36:06 - Our favorite comfy athlege clothes.38:06 - Sally Ride Documentary46:45 - The Birthday Effect57:20 - Share your comments about the Birthday Effect.Comment on Spotify, and on YouTubeConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Visit https://shopbeam.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDY to get our exclusive discount of up to 35% off.New customers can get the Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara and a mini-sized Brilliant Eye Brightener at a special set price with free shipping at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYSave 20% Off Honeylove by going to https://www.honeylove.com/BRAINCANDY #honeylovepodSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Susie's mom has been ill, and now she's on the mend, but she seems to have a bigger problem on her hands--namely an infestation of raccoons INSIDE her house. We talk about the doofus who sat his buns down on a Swaroski crystal chair at a museum and destroyed it. We discuss Barbara Walters, her ambition, and why she was kind of a jerk to women despite being a trailblazer at the same time. We debate whether we should start a "chichi chat," and why showing your body off to other women can be empowering. We hear about the lifelike dolls in Brazil that are making people mad, and how the women who collect (and play with) them are mocked, yet no one thinks its weird that men have similarly infantile and strange hobbies. And Susie lists several women who might be getting lots of credit for their business acumen when really their men are pulling the strings behind the scenes.3:06 - Peg's Raccoon Invasion8:17 - Identifying poop in the wild11:30 - Moron who sat on museum chair15:33 - reviewing the chari break video21:35 - If you like camping or have an RV, you should do this.23:39 - Barbara Walters Documentary "Tell Me Everything"27:50 - F**k you Barbara, and F**k you Ellen.29:53 - Hundreds of women meet for an online topless video "ChiChi" chat. Susie has another new enemy this week and this time it's conflicting with her passion for oral hygiene. Sarah had to so sly vigilante justice this weekend when she saw some old creepers leering at women at the club. We discuss the Astroworld concert tragedy where ten people were crushed to death due to a lack of crowd control, poor planning, and too many people in the audience. We learn about the "right to repair" movement and how companies are being forced to provide information and parts to consumers who want to fix rather than replace their products. We talk about the history of the Michelin star system for rating restaurants, how it came to be, and why it's not as crazy as you think that it's the same company who makes tires.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. As we approach the tenth anniversary of the date that Cecil the lion was lured out of the protected area and wounded with an arrow, so that an American recreational big-game trophy hunter could then track the wounded majestic 13-year-old African lion (who lived in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe) and murder him on July 1st, 2015. Animal activist and best selling author, Eduardo Goncalves, continues his fight to ban trophy hunting with appearances, interviews and three new books. There is just to much disturbing information collected by best selling author, Eduardo Goncalves, to cover in just one book. So, the publisher decided to create a trophy hunters trilogy of books. So, the publisher repackaged the material into a trilogy - “Twenty Elephants in Seventy-Five Minutes," “Shoot One Lion – Get One Free” & “Mainlining on Heroin.” Eduardo Gonçalves has been a speech-writer for British politicians, run a government department in the Middle East, and helped save the world's most endangered big cat – the Iberian Lynx – from extinction. A former journalist with the BBC, he exposed a major nuclear accident cover-up and secret human radiation experiments. He's a conservationist who has advised the World Wildlife Fund, and has worked with homelessness charities on both sides of the Atlantic. He recently led a major undercover operation to break up Europe's largest dogfighting crime syndicate, and rescued a tiger cub that was about to be shot by a trophy hunter in an enclosure. Despite a serious illness which has led him to become disabled, he has set up an international campaign to stop trophy hunting of wildlife. His work is supported by some of the world's biggest stars as well as leading conservationists and African politicians. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

With the release of her latest single, the soulful and sensualromance “You Know What It's Like,” Brenda Russell not only continues to pave the way for her highly anticipated upcoming album Songpainter – her first collection in 20 years – but also makes a triumphant return to the refined classic blend of adult contemporary R&B and urban jazz that launched and defined the trailblazing four and a half decade career of the multi-Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Tony nominated and Grammy winning Broadway composer for The Color Purple. “You Know What It's Like” is a co-write by the singer and the legendary Roberta Flack. When people assess Brenda's overall career, her success as an artist and with The Color Purple often overshadows the gemsshe wrote that were hits for other artists. Beyond Oleta Adams' “Get Here,” Brenda's gems have been recorded by Luther Vandross (“If Only for One Night”), Donna Summer (“Dinner with Gershwin”), Babyface, The Manhattan Transfer, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Ramsey Lewis. Her tunes have also been sampled by everyone from Janet Jackson and 2Pace to Chance the Rapper and Ariana Grande. In addition, Brenda's co-composition with Brazilian artist Ivan Lins “She Walks This Earth” was recorded by international superstar Sting for the all-star tribute album Love Affair: The Music Of Ivan Lins. Sting's inspired performance of the uniquely beautiful song earned him a Grammy Award in 2001 for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance. Brenda was recently elected into the Female Songwriters Hall of Fame. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

Sarah went to Vail Pride and is getting very emotional about her LGBTQ journey, the self-doubt she's grappled with, and her goal of self-acceptance. We explore why we're often hardest on ourselves and more accepting of others. Sarah talks about a study on rule followers, and we speculate about why people follow rules even when no one would know if they broke it. We discuss why procrastination can be about avoiding feelings that make us uncomfortable rather than the task itself. Royal Ascot wraps up — and The Final Furlong Podcast is armed for a blockbuster finish. After tipping three winners on Ladies' Day,
Sarah had a run-in at Home Depot where she was offered free plants, and she said no! And now she has regrets for being so honest and having integrity. Susie gives a tribute to her beloved Brian Wilson. We find out why Amelia Earhart wasn't actually a great pilot (seems like the disappearance should've tipped us off), but instead was just ahead of her time in...influencing. Susie and Sarah had a little reunion and they're still riding that sweet high. We're happy Susie wasn't on the flight where a little girl was allowed to take over the intercom and sing a Moana song to a non-consensual audience. Sarah tells us about a company that raised millions of dollars from investors posing as an AI tech company when really they had hundreds of people working behind the scenes manually performing tasks instead. A fan is suing the Colorado Rockies after he got hit with a ball. He thinks the team should be held accountable for being so bad that he quit paying attention and got struck by the ball as a result. Longtime fans of contemporary jazz may remember Dr. Dave from his initial success as a recording artist in the mid-90s, when his albums I Like It Like That, Smooth and Cruisin' made big splashes in the early days of the Smooth Jazz format. SoCal based composer/guitarist Dr. Dave mounted a massive comeback in 2018, forming The Housecall Band and stirring up excitement among longtime fans (while creating thousands of new ones) with the 2018 release of Midnight Daydream. The funky, powerhouse, horn-drenched album spawned four hit singles, starting with the sultry, infectiously seductive “Sexy Cindy” – one of Dr. Dave's biggest hits ever, ranking #1 for Smooth Jazz Guitar songs in the U.S. on Radio Guitar One's Top 20. The song was named for Cindy Sanchez Medina, Miss Santander, Colombia 2018, who appeared in the much-viewed YouTube video. Dr. Dave's got another magnificent female muse in mind on his latest single, the cleverly titled “Reserved for Abbie,” a seductive, deeply passionate ballad expressing his enduring affection for a onetime girlfriend who lived several states away. In addition to the across-the-board success of “Sexy Cindy,” Dr. Dave's return to contemporary jazz with Midnight Daydream led to a prolific flow of radio and streaming hits, including the guitarist's all-time top streamed song “Cecil's Groove,” currently at 3.7M+ streams on Spotify. The title track “Midnight Daydream” earned a multitude of accolades: #1 most added on the Radio Wave Internet Airplay Chart; #5 on the SmoothJazz.com Radar Chart; #9 on the SmoothJazz.com Top 100 Indie Chart and #14 on the SmoothJazz.com Top 100. A third single, “Cabo Time,” reached #19 on the SmoothJazz.com Radar chart. The album's fourth single was a blues, jazz, funk and rock track developed around the opening “Hey Hey Hey Hey” riff heard nightly since 2014 by the house band (who wrote it) on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Dr. Dave and the Housecall Band followed up in 2021 with Carefree Revisited, a full band revamp of an earlier unreleased solo album. Send us a textI've been "bossy" the moment I popped out of the womb. Loud. Confident. Opinionated. And I'm lucky. Because somewhere along the way, I realized—none of that was actually a bad thing. Being bold and self-assured shouldn't be something we're taught to tone down. It should be something we protect fiercely. That's why this week's episode with Dr. Lisa Hinkelman hit me so damn hard.Dr. Lisa Hinkelman is the founder of ROX (Ruling Our eXperiences), a nonprofit that's teaching girls how to take up space in a world that constantly asks them to shrink. Lisa and I dive deep into what it means to raise confident daughters when confidence is statistically tanking between the ages of 10 and 14—and doesn't bounce back for most women until our mid-forties. We talk about “bossy” labels, girl drama, ghosting, why confrontation isn't a dirty word, and what it looks like to finally unlearn being the nice girl.If you've ever walked through the world feeling like you were too much—too loud, too strong, too opinionated—or if you're raising a daughter who's starting to dim her light to fit in, this episode is required listening.

And Lucas on John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood? How does teenage sexuality in Fast Times at Ridgemont High compare to Twilight? Which teen movies pass the Bechdel test? Elton John is not only "still standing," he is a living superlative, the ultimate record-breaking, award-winning survivor of the great era of pop and rock music that he helped to shape during his six decades in the music industry. Yet few of his numerous biographies and song guides take him as a historical subject worthy of scholarly study. In contrast, On Elton John: An Opinionated Guide (Oxford University Press, 2025) approaches the artist seriously and analytically, while still couched in a highly accessible style. Author Matthew Restall offers a new way to explore Sir Elton's career and music within the contexts of other artists and of sweeping shifts in popular culture during his lifetime. Each of the ten chapters is anchored to an Elton song, rooted in its pop culture history, and advances a clear argument, pairing him with figures ranging from Bernie (Bernie Taupin, his lyricist) to Bennie (of the Jets), from "frenemy" David Bowie to artists like Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, and Dua Lipa, from Diana (the princess) to Jesus (yes, that one). Restall contends that Sir Elton's career offers us a novel way to see and understand the last half century of pop music and culture history--whether we call the era that of the album, of rock, of postmodernism, or of something else. The yellow brick road of Sir Elton's career has been long, winding, and bumpy, but, as Restall argues, his success has come not just despite but because of those challenges. The artist's transformations from Reg to Elton to Sir Elton to Uncle Elton, from ugly duckling to bedazzled swan, from the world's biggest rock star to creator of the world's largest AIDS fundraising organization, from tabloid punching bag to pop royalty, have all served as survival strategies that illuminate the era he has thereby navigated. Matthew Restall teaches at the Pennsylvania State University, where he is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of History, Anthropology, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Director of Latin American Studies.
