Jeff Harry is back! Earlier this year, Jeff and I asked the question: "Is America a scam?" Today, the question is, "Can we fix capitalism?" Yvon Chouinard, self-styled "reluctant billionaire" and Patagonia founder recently made headlines for giving up ownership of the company and dedicating future profits to fight climate change. “Earth is now our only shareholder,” Chouinard wrote in an open letter. The Internet went wild for the news with many celebrating the move as proof that there is hope for capitalism yet. In an exclusive New York Times interview Chouinard himself positioned the decision as just that: “Hopefully this will influence a new form of capitalism that doesn't end up with a few rich people and a bunch of poor people. We are going to give away the maximum amount of money to people who are actively working on saving this planet.” Others questioned whether the move was a way of avoiding the $700 million tax hit that would come with selling the company, while keeping company control within the family. We've def got billionaire trust issues, even with the "reluctant" ones. Jeff Harry joins me again on this episode of Marketing Muckraking to talk about the dangers of billionaires with platinum cards and hearts of gold. And we explore the question of whether we can "fix" capitalism...and if the uberwealthy are the ones to do it? Is the solution to our systemic problems simply a matter of rustling up more well-meaning millionaires and billionaires? Let's CoMuckrake about it. Come along for a wild and messy ride. We cover: Why a "reluctant billionaire" like Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia might not be qualified to fix the planet and its problems How "the one moral CEO in America," Dan Price of Gravity payments, fell from grace and why we're embarrassed we ever re-tweeted him Andrew Carnegie, wealthy philanthropy, and paternalism in do-good clothing What climate change has to do with Super Mario World Camp Reset and how a stuffed monkey named Uche might save us all A simple practice to help you deconstruct capitalism today — or your money back! About Jeff Harry Jeff Harry shows individuals and companies how to tap into their true selves, to feel their happiest and most fulfilled — all by playing. Jeff believes that we already have many of the answers we seek, and by simply unleashing our inner child, we can find our purpose and, in turn, help to create a better world. An international speaker and consultant, Jeff has presented at conferences such as INBOUND, SXSW, and Australia's Pausefest, showing audiences how major issues in the workplace can be solved using play. He was selected by Engagedly as one of the Top 100 HR Influencers of 2020 for his organizational development work around addressing toxicity in the workplace. His playwork has been featured in the New York Times, AJ+, SoulPancake, the SF Chronicle, and CNN. And he's a damn good follow on TikTok. Go check him out. Links from the episode: Is America a Scam? Muckraker's note: My episodes with Jeff always start with him messaging me on Instagram like, “Should we talk about this?! Let's talk about this.” So we don't do this in a typical podcast interview style, like you might be used to, but two friends dishing and debating the topics we're passionate about. The day we recorded this, Jeff had some tech issues getting onto Instagram live, which I have edited to make our conversation easier to follow. But that also means there's more of an RKA monologue at the beginning before Jeff could connect and some messy IG audio — but by the time you hear what Jeff has to say at the end of our chat, I think you'll agree that this messiness is a plus, not a minus. On with the show.
Jeff Harry shows individuals and companies how to tap into their true selves, to feel their happiest and most fulfilled — all by playing. Jeff has worked with Google, Microsoft, Southwest Airlines, Adobe, the NFL, Amazon and Facebook, helping their staff to infuse more play into the day-to-day. Jeff is an international speaker who has presented at conferences such as INBOUND, SXSW, and Australia's Pausefest, showing audiences how major issues in the workplace can be solved using play. His playwork has been featured in the New York Times, AJ+, SoulPancake, the SF Chronicle, and CNN. While we spend most of our time pretending to be important, serious grownups, it's when we let go of that facade and just play, that the real magic happens. Fully embracing your own nerdy genius — whatever that is — gives you the power to make a difference and change lives. Jeff believes that we already have many of the answers we seek, and by simply unleashing our inner child, we can find our purpose and, in turn, help to create a better world. In episode 292 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Jeff chose Tufts University for his undergraduate experience, what was the mission at Play-Well Teknologies and what made them so successful, how college students can remedy burnout through play, the best way to have a difficult conversation with people in your organization, how asking one question can change your entire day, how we can get unstuck if we are at a crossroads, what we can learn in the "Dudes, Do Better: Dismantling Toxic Masculinity" workshop, how we can have conversations with people we are opposed to politically, and how we can help "Deconstruct The BS of Office Politics". I always wanted to interview a designer to get a hint of what it is like to be thinking holistically to produce aesthetic design that make a lasting impression. Luckily for me in my network I have someone who pointed out that I needed to look no further than Stephen Gates and was strongly suggested that I contacted him at earliest convenience to set up an interview. And against all expectations this is what I did!In contacting Stephen Gates, I was far from thinking that I will be in for a treat! Imagine being able to interview an international keynote speaker who spoke to large international keynotes at SXSW, HOW Design Live, Awwwards, Pausefest, FUSE, Tech Open Air, Fifteen Seconds Festival and more alongside speakers like Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Nest founder Tony Fadell, Martha Stewart, Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh, and John Maeda. A man of many talents, the producer and the host of the Crazy One podcast which I invite you all to listen because on top of being very entertaining it is very instructive. As always click this link to enjoy the conversation.

Let's talk about workplace safety. No, not that kind of workplace safety - we're here to talk about building psychologically safe workspaces, which in our opinion is a crucial conversation especially as we're reimagining workspaces in this era of COVID. And you'll want to hear this WHOLE conversation, because there are knowledge bombs just being tossed around by our guest throughout this entire episode. Today we're talking to Jeff Harry, who is the founder of Rediscover Your Play, and who works with companies and individuals to help lift their veil of BS in order to make their work more fulfilling and rediscover their joyful purpose, all the while removing what is getting in the way of their success. This conversation got us thinking, and we hope it gets you thinking too. After this episode, which sadly is the very last in our Summer of Action, our ask is this: tell all your friends to listen to this episode, especially those with workplaces. And take a good hard look at your own workplace. How can you make it more psychologically safe for EVERYONE who works there? Have questions, comments, or concerns? During this episode, Emma Chiu of Wunderman Thompson discusses global trends which affect brands as well as the competition for attention. She describes growing anxiety and a sense of urgency as some trends--especially trends mapped to digital and technology capabilities--seem to have accelerated during the COVID crisis. Brands are also grappling with Gen Z consumers and how they are driving cultural shifts; for example, Emma describes how younger generations engage in employee activism and are beginning to hold their employers accountable for social values. She observes that relatively new platforms like TikTok and Clubhouse are evolving quickly which presents adaptation challenges for brands. Finally, we discuss value-based marketing where some brands pursue non-linear approaches in order to pleasantly surprise consumers and “future proof” their messaging for the long term. Full show notes with resources Guest Bio: Emma Chiu leads Wunderman Thompson Intelligence, the agency’s in-house futures and innovation think-tank. Emma consults with brands on how to build long-term strategies based on qualitative and quantitative insight that incorporates cultural and behavioral change, sector innovation and zeitgeist shifts. Let's be honest, as adults, we spend a lot of our time pretending to be important. While there's a time and a place for being serious, there is a paradox - when we let go of the facade that we have “it” (life and leadership) handled and we create from a place of play, real magic happens. Jeff Harry is an expert in working with individuals and organisations like Google, Microsoft, Southwest Airlines, Adobe, the NFL, Amazon and Facebook to infuse more play into your day to tap into your true self, feel your happiest and most fulfilled. Jeff believes that when we let our inner child play, we can find our purpose and, in turn, help create a better world. Jeff was selected by BambooHR as one of the Top HR Influencers of 2020 to watch. His work has been featured on AJ+, SoulPancake, SF Chronicle and CNN, and he's presented at conferences all over the world including Australia's very own Pausefest. Join me on today's episode as we have some fun talking about embracing our own nerdy genius — whatever that is — and, my favourite, how to deal with A-holes at work with play and address our own inner a-hole.
