“Once women everywhere are empowered, it would be time to bring in the rent boys” One by one the panel of peril change up their weapon set as they engage in a life or death four way dual, as they smash and slice each armament to pieces in turn. The only thing that breaks their furious combat is a swift two hour viewing of this week's film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee, 2000). Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei) is a woman with a grudge against Wudan. And it just so happens that she and her apprentice Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi) are in close proximity to a pre-eminent member of Wudan in Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat). Can the nefarious duo exact revenge on Mu Bai and his forbidden love Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), and take control of the legendary Green Destiny sword too? Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jTdOdcMKoY Spurned by a former Wudan lover and told that, as a woman, she cannot learn the secrets of their art, Jade Fox is ruddy fuming. She has already managed to assassinate Li Mu Bai's master, but will she succeed in taking him out too? Did the panel enjoy this week's cinematic serving? Could they find a way to improve the villainous plan? And who will be named this week's most diabolical (person/podcast((er)))? Film writers Hanna Flint (Fade to Black podcast, The First Film Club) and Leila Latif (Little White Lies, Curzon, Total Film) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Hannah's choice Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a 2000 wuxia (the adventures of martial artists in ancient China) film. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun-fat as Li Mu Bai, Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien and Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu. Li Mu Bai, a warrior, asks Yu Shu Lien, the woman he loves, to pass on his sword, Green Destiny, to Sir Te. However, when the sword is stolen, Li embarks on a mission to find it. It broke records for its box office gross for a foreign-language film and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film. The highest ever for a non-English language film, until it was equaled by Roma in 2018. The film gave a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films and led the way for films such as House of Flying Daggers and Hero having success with Western audiences. Unsurprisingly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon scores highly from Flixwatcher and guests - with a very, very strong recommendability rating. Slightly lower scores for small screen give an overall rating of 4.39 [supsystic-tables id=268] Episode #256 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #256 Crew of Leila Latif (@Leila_Latif) and Hanna Ines Flint (@HannaFlint) from first_filmclub Find their Websites online at https://www.leilalatif.com/ and at https://twitter.com/artsemergency and at https://twitter.com/thegoodagencyuk and at https://twitter.com/first_filmclub and at https://twitter.com/fadetoblackpod and at https://www.flintonfilm.com/ Please make sure you give them some love More about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon For more info on Never Rarely Sometimes Always, you can visit Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon IMDb page here or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Rotten Tomatoes page here. This week marks the 20th anniversary of Ang Lee's epic martial arts drama Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Based on the fourth book in Wang Dulu's Crane-Iron Pentalogy, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon tells the story of Yu Jiaoling, the daughter of a government official, who secretly longs to become a renowned swordswoman and adventurer. When shown a legendary sword, called the Green Destiny, Jiaolong attempts to claim the sword for herself. She is later confronted by its former owner, Li Mu Bai, who sees her true potential and seeks to train her, only to learn that she is the disciple of his master's killer. With its captivating cinematography and outstanding fight choreography, Crouching Tiger Hidden recaptures all the wonder and excitement of classic martial arts cinema while elevating the genre with poignant storytelling, brilliantly executed by its stars, Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Zhang Ziyi. It's episode 178, and there is nothing we can hold onto in this world. Only by letting go can we truly possess what is real. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) tells the story of Li Mu Bai, a fearsome warrior with 'last day on the job' syndrome, and Yu Shu Lien, another fearsome warrior who is in love with him. Before they can retire and live out their lives together, they must deal with Jen Yu, another fearsome warrior who is the daughter of a local official and Jade Fox, another fearsome warrior who killed Li Mu Bai's master (another fearsome warrior) and is now hiding as Jen's servant. We talk about one of the most compelling visions for an action movie ever; a potted history of wuxia; and the benefits of a chainmail snood. All of which leads to one important question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: No growth without assistance. No action without reaction. No desire without restraint. Now give yourself up and find yourself again. Next week, we're fighting our way through The Raid (2011). Get in touch! HowtoSurviveShow@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter! @HowToSurvivePod
Have your deep philosophical statements ready and get ready to fly, kids, because swords and stage wires are about to cross in deadly but also awesome fashion! Morpheus, one of the major leaders in Zion's war against the conquering machines, has traveled deep into the Matrix in search of a new weapon -- the legendary Green Destiny. He has traveled so far, in fact, that he somehow finds himself in China during the Qing Dynasty, and standing between Morpheus and the Green Destiny is its former wielder, the legendary Li Mu Bai, a man who fights like some bizarre combination of a crouching tiger and a hidden dragon. Neither wire-fu warrior wants this fight, but Morpheus needs the Green Destiny and Li Mu Bai has no intention of letting him take it. As a great master once said, some motherf*ckers are always trying to ice skate uphill. Colin Mulkerin returns to Smash Fiction to give us his tips for a perfect Agent Smith impression, along with his signature brand of breathless argument. Meanwhile, everyone else forgets they're on an audio-only program and starts describing their impractical sunglasses or their sick martial arts poses while the judge swings on wires in the rafters.
