Nick is back with Steve for this show, which features a guest interview with Andy Gotts, MBE. Andy is a renowned celebrity photographer based in London, England, and New York, USA. He is most noted for his black and white portraits of Hollywood actors and singers. His work has been published internationally and has appeared in many magazines, including: VOGUE, GQ, Vanity Fair, Empire, Total Film, Entertainment Weekly, FHM, Hello!, and Glamour, and many more. Andy tells Nick and Steve many fascinating stories of being behind the lens, photographing many of the most famous faces in the world. He also recounts how plucking up the courage as a student to ask Stephen Fry if he could take his photograph has let to over 30 years of celebrity photography. Steve and Nick also look back on The Photography Show, held for the first time in London, and Nick tells Steve why he bought a Fujifilm XT5 and two lenses at the show. Steve lusts after the new Fujifilm GFX100RF! The book of the week is from Nashville based photographer and friend of the show Jay Farrell, a self published look at Route 66 Roadscapes. Join BP, Justin and your host Coop as we discuss the 1999 American slasher film directed by Geoffrey Wright, and starring Brittany Murphy, Jay Mohr, and Michael Biehn. The plot focuses on a small Virginia town where a serial killer is targeting teenaged virgins. After being submitted to and rejected by the MPAA numerous times, Cherry Falls was screened at several film festivals in some countries in late 1999 and early 2000, but did not have a theatrical release in the United States. Finally, it was purchased by USA Films, who telecast it on the USA Network on October 20, 2000. Wright promised an intelligent script full of irony. In 1999, the filmmakers began scouting locations in Virginia, using the town square in Warrenton; the high school used in the film was Thomas Jefferson High School, located in Richmond. The residents of Richmond lambasted the making of the film because of its brutality. The film's set was described as "tense" by writer Ken Selden, due to the thirty-day production schedule falling behind, which led to budget issues from October Films. Director Geoffrey Wright kept Selden's original script relatively unchanged, but re-wrote the film's final "orgy scene", which had originally been conceived by Selden as featuring the teenagers having a mass sex party under a giant white sheet. Wright opted to shoot the scene with the cast nude, which resulted in much of the scene being cut in order to avoid an NC-17 rating. Release Cherry Falls was shopped at the Cannes film market in 1999, and was sold for theatrical distribution in all international territories across the world. The film had a tentative theatrical release scheduled for November 2000. However, the film was troubled by censor disapproval in the United States, and the distributors' relationship with USA Films led the company to make the decision to release it as a television movie in the United States, syndicated on the USA Network. As a result, it became (and remains) the most expensive television film ever made, with a production budget of $14 million. The film shown at the in May 1999 at Marché du Film in France. Cherry Falls was released in the United States on October 20, 2000. The film had successful theatrical runs in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe. It opened in the United Kingdom on August 25, 2000. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reports that 63% of 19 surveyed critics gave it a positive review. Doug Brod of Entertainment Weekly rated it A− and wrote that "it might just be the wittiest, most subversive teen thriller since Heathers". AllMovie gave it a favorable review: "Of all the teen slasher flicks that premiered after the wildly successful Scream series (Urban Legend, etc.), Cherry Falls will possibly go down as one of the most creative, but sadly unseen ones in the bunch". Derek Elley of Variety called it "a semi-successful spin on familiar material that could build minor cult status". Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club wrote: "Smart at times but not nearly smart enough, and peppered with good ideas it doesn't really know how to exploit, Cherry Falls is just good enough to make you wish it were far, far better". Chris Parcellin of Film Threat rated it 3/5 stars and wrote that "it aspires to be another Heathers or Rivers Edge, but doesn't make it". Total Film rated it 3/5 stars and wrote: "If you're not already sick to death of the teen horror genre, you might want to give this a look". Matt Serafini of Dread Central ranked Cherry Falls number seven in a list of the top ten high school horror films from 1996 to the present. #cherryfalls #brittanymurphy #jaymohr #horror #blood #virgin #tv #urbanlegends #mulhollanddrive #davidlynch #blockbuster #mtv #2000s #1990s

Marshall Shaffer (Slant Magazine, Decider, /Film, Marshall and the Movie Substack) and Rafa Sales Ross (Sight & Sound, i_D, BFI, Total Film, Little White Lies) return to Flixwatcher to review Marshall's choice Widows. Widows (2018) is a heist thriller from director Steve (12 Years A Slave) McQueen and screenplay by Gillian (Gone Girl) Flynn, based on a Lynda La Plante TV series. The ‘widows' are Veronica Rawlings (Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Alice (Elizabeth Debicki). Left to deal with the $2,000,000 debt left by a heist gone wrong, led by Veronica's husband, Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson), the group decide to carry out a elaborate heist themselves to pay back Jamal and Jatemme Manning (Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya). Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Jacki Weaver, Carrie Coon, Robert Duvall, Jon Bernthal, Garret Dillahunt and Lukas Haas also star. Recommendability scores for Widows were very high, not only does it deliver on plot twists and heist tension but it is also a commentary on gentrification. It also scores highly across other Flixwatcher categories to score a very high 4.52 overall. Rafa Sales Ross (Sight & Sound, i_D, BFI, Total Film, Little White Lies) and Marshall Shaffer (Slant Magazine, Decider, /Film, Marshall at the Movies Substack) join Flixwatcher to review Rafa's choice Nine Days. Nine Days (2020) is a fantasy drama written and directed by Edson Oda. It explores themes of the meaning of life, existentialism, morality and spirituality. It stars Winston Duke as Will, a sombre analyst who interviews souls to see if they pass a test to go and become humans. The period of testing lasts nine days, if they are not selected they will cease to exist. Among the souls being interviewed for selection are Zazie Beetz as Emma, Tony Hale as Alexander and Bill Skarsgård as Kane. Will is frequently visited by Benedict Wong's Kyo, a supervisor but also friend who has never been human. Nine Days was unfortunately a victim of the pandemic, it was partially released in the US and it's themes of life, death and suicide was a hard sell for the post-pandemic viewing appetites. The character of Will was inspired by Edson's uncle who died by suicide and one of the one of the selected souls who Will has chosen takes her own life. Recommendability for Nine Days was mixed, mainly due to the themes on life and death, however if you are willing to take a chance you will be richly rewarded with a complex and beautiful film. Strong ratings for engagement and small screen give an impressive overall score of 4.13.
