Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich present our Bulletproof Monk Comic/Movie Comparison and Review!Bulletproof Monk is a 2003 American action comedy film directed by Paul Hunter in his feature film directorial debut, and starring Chow Yun-fat, Seann William Scott, and Jaime King. The film is loosely based on the comic book written by Brett Lewis with art by Michael Avon Oeming. The film was shot in Toronto and Hamilton, Canada, and other locations that resemble New York City. The Stairs. The Warehouse. The Hospital. The Hallway. Starring national treasures, Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung, as well as the always brilliant Anthony Wong in a small but memorable villainous turn, Hard Boiled is ultimately an all-gas-no-brakes production, largely focused on violent spectacle rather than reveling in the melodrama that is often endemic to Woo's filmography and the heroic bloodshed genre in general. Featuring no less that 3 protracted action sequences that are packed to the brim with creativity and excellence in execution, Hard Boiled is an all-time great, well-deserving of its reputation and place in the annals of action cinema history. It's DIE HARD in a hospital! This time, Phil and Liam team up to investigate HARD BOILED (1992), John Woo's operatic action extravaganza starring legendary actors Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung, as two very different Hong Kong cops who join forces to take down a ruthless arms dealer. It's a film that's often compared to DIE HARD…but does it actually surpass it? Is this actually the greatest action film of all time? The boys debate these controversial questions, while breaking down the various astonishing action sequences that Woo somehow captured in this utterly spectacular 'bullet ballet.' They also discuss the film's many poetic flourishes, the deceptively deep thematic underpinnings, the soulful tone, the supercool style, and the fabulous supporting cast. A worldwide phenomenon upon its release in 2000, the film broke box-office records for a foreign language film in the U.S. It earned the most Academy Award nominations ever for a foreign language film at the time. Recently re-released in theaters in 4K and with so much appreciation being shown towards Michelle Yeoh for "Everything Everywhere All At Once," Dan Bayer, Brendan Hodges, Danilo Castro, Isaiah Washington, and I decided it was time to revisit this complex, beautiful and thrilling film. It is a pleasure to welcome actress, fight choreographer, and professional stuntwoman Michelle Lee to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born in Long Beach, California, Michelle moved to Taiwan right after birth and spent the first five years of her life with her grandmother, where she became fluent in Chinese. When she returned to the United States and Los Angeles County, Michelle experienced a big culture shock due to the language barrier and culture change. To get her out of her shell, Michelle's mom pushed her to take acting classes, leading her to pursue work as a child actor. While continuing her education, Michelle Lee took high school martial arts classes. After she graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles, Michelle auditioned for a role of a “fighter.” She booked the gig with her martial arts background and discovered she would fight alongside legendary actor Chow Yun-fat in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. From there, Michelle began booking stunt and fight work in various blockbuster films, and television series such as Bullet Train, the Last Airbender, Olympus Has Fallen, and Pacific Rim. Currently, Michelle Lee stars in Paramount+'s Blood & Treasure. The series is a high-stakes action adventure that centers around a brilliant antiquities expert and a cunning art thief collaborating to catch a ruthless terrorist who funds his attacks through stolen treasures. As they chase the terrorist around the world, they are in the center of a 2,000-year-old battle for “the cradle of civilization.”In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Michelle Lee spoke about starring in both the DC Extended Universe (Suicide Squad) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Black Widow and Venom). She teased her character, Violet, and her role on Blood & Treasure.

Film writers Hanna Flint (Fade to Black podcast, The First Film Club) and Leila Latif (Little White Lies, Curzon, Total Film) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Hannah's choice Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a 2000 wuxia (the adventures of martial artists in ancient China) film. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun-fat as Li Mu Bai, Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien and Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu. Li Mu Bai, a warrior, asks Yu Shu Lien, the woman he loves, to pass on his sword, Green Destiny, to Sir Te. However, when the sword is stolen, Li embarks on a mission to find it. It broke records for its box office gross for a foreign-language film and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film. The highest ever for a non-English language film, until it was equaled by Roma in 2018. The film gave a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films and led the way for films such as House of Flying Daggers and Hero having success with Western audiences. Unsurprisingly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon scores highly from Flixwatcher and guests - with a very, very strong recommendability rating. Slightly lower scores for small screen give an overall rating of 4.39   [supsystic-tables id=268] Episode #256 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #256 Crew of Leila Latif (@Leila_Latif) and Hanna Ines Flint (@HannaFlint) from first_filmclub Find their Websites online at https://www.leilalatif.com/ and at https://twitter.com/artsemergency and at https://twitter.com/thegoodagencyuk and at https://twitter.com/first_filmclub and at https://twitter.com/fadetoblackpod and at https://www.flintonfilm.com/ Please make sure you give them some love   More about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon For more info on Never Rarely Sometimes Always, you can visit Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon IMDb page here or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Rotten Tomatoes page here. In this episode we first take a look at The Killer, a film from 1989 directed by John Woo. It stars Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sally Yeh, and nobody's motivation is what you think it is. Are people acting out of malice, avarice, guilt or something else? From there we move to 2002 and So Close, directed by Corey Yuen and starring Shu Qi, Zhao Wei and Karen Mok. Once again, everyone has some deeply buried motives. Perhaps they're so deep that they're only released through subtext. You really have to "read between the lines" to understand what people are thinking. Or, you could just listen to this episode and we'll tell you. Both of these episodes are a genuine romp and you'll definitely have fun watching them. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In our next episode we remain in Asia to look at a pair of films that Sean calls "Modern-Day Kurosawa," because they're set in the present day.First it'll be 1949's Stray Dog; then we look at High and Low, from 1963. Did you guess that they both star Toshiro Mifune? It's kind of a sucker bet. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support

As the clock hands approach midnight, Ma Qingqi-a delivery driver in Zhongshan, Guangdong province-leaves his home to start his daily routine. Earlier than most of his fellow drivers, he transports fresh vegetables to a wholesale market in Macao. After unloading the goods, Ma relishes the most relaxing time of the day-and orders a cup of coffee and a pineapple bun. As a popular destination renowned for its varied cuisine, Macao lives up to any tourist's expectations for a tasty trip. However, a lesser-known fact is that around 90 percent of the region's fresh ingredients are transported from the Chinese mainland, with the "vegetable basket project"-a decadeslong program to improve food production and supplies-carried out in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Ma's routine, exemplifying the project's impact, is seen in Crunch and Munch in Macao, a 4K documentary series jointly produced by the China Media Group and the Macao Special Administrative Region.马庆祺的日常工作在纪录片《澳门之味》中彰显了“菜篮子工程”的影响。这部4K纪录片由中央广播电视总台与澳门特别行政区联合制作。图源:纪录片《澳门之味》With four episodes, each spanning 50 minutes, the documentary has been running on multiple platforms including CCTV-1 and CCTV-9 since Dec 18, two days before the 22nd anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. Xu Rui, director of one episode, recalls their chance encounter with Audrey Stow, the daughter of the late Andrew Stow, a baker known for the iconic Macao egg tart, a reinvented version that blends the methods of traditional Portuguese egg tarts with English custard tarts. Macao egg tarts are so famous that most tourists will rank it highly on their must-try list, so we didn't plan to take much time to feature it. However, Audrey told us some interesting stories, making us change our mind," says Xu.徐蕊介绍:“澳门的蛋挞非常有名,大多数游客会把它排在打卡名单的前列,所以我们一开始没打算花太多时间介绍它。但是,在区迪和我们分享了一些有意思的故事后,我们的想法发生了改变。”Originally traveling to work in Macao as a pharmacist, Andrew Stow shifted his career interest to the food industry, opening up Lord Stow's Bakery in the late 1980s. With an experimental spirit, Stow cooked his special egg tarts with the creatively, crispy scorched top. However, the brown top-now a signature flavor-was not well-received as most people believed it was burnt. Stow's wife persuaded her husband to give away the tarts for free. The endeavor met with an overwhelmingly positive response, laying the foundation for the bakery franchise's expansion overseas to Japan and the Philippines. Audrey told us that she'll never change the egg-tart recipe, as she wants the flavor created by her father to be tasted by future generations. Her love and devotion to her father instills the snack with a touching warmth, making the story more meaningful," says Xu. Aside from its alluring taste, food sometimes possesses power thanks to the legendary stories behind certain dishes. This is reflected in the tale of Leong Kam Hon, a former shipbuilder whose life was altered after a workplace accident which nearly cost him his arm in the 1990s. Restarting his career by opening up a cafe, the determined man learned a recipe for hand-stirred coffee from a foreign couple. One cup requires constant stirring-at least 400 times-to mix sugar, hot water and instant coffee. With praise from Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat, who stumbled upon his small venue and enjoyed a cup of the hand-whipped coffee, the cafe has since become a top draw for avid fans and curious tourists. Such interesting stories abound in Macao-a Portuguese chef taking Macao as his second home to run a restaurant with his wife, a hospitable street vendor devoted to his porridge sales for over 60 years, and an American chef's experimental cooking of steaks in a special kitchen with a wall made of Himalayan salt blocks. Most of the legendary stories behind the delicacies are like a dialogue exchanged between different civilizations. If you take a look back at history, you find most cultural clashes were accompanied by violence or conflict," comments Zhang Tongdao, director of the documentary center with Beijing Normal University.北京师范大学纪录片研究中心主任张同道评论说:“大多数美食背后的传奇故事,就像不同文明之间的对话交流。但如果回顾一下历史,你会发现大多数文化碰撞是与暴力或冲突相伴的。”"Hence, a cultural encounter through food is beautiful and warm, making the documentary not just a mouthwatering treat but also a thought-provoking trip," he adds.

That turned out to be the case. The film stars Chow Yun-fat as Inspector "Tequila" Yuen, Tony Leung Chiu-wai as Alan, an undercover cop, and Anthony Wong as Johnny Wong, a leader of the criminal triads.Hard Boiled was John Woo's last Hong Kong film before his transition to Hollywood. After making films that glamorized gangsters (and receiving criticism for doing so), Woo wanted to make a Dirty Harry styled film to glamorize the police. After the death of screenwriter Barry Wong, the film's screenplay underwent constant changes during filming. New characters such as Mad Dog and Mr. Woo were introduced, while the original plotline of a baby-poisoning psychopath was cut. Instant Hotel is an Australian reality television series which began airing on the Seven Network on 7 November 2017.[1] The series follows homeowners who have transformed their homes into hotels and are individually judged by each other to receive the highest scores with the winner to win an ultimate prize.   The Before trilogy consists of three films directed by Richard Linklater, and starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as lovers Jesse and Céline at three different parts of their lives. The trilogy consists of the films Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013). Filmed and set at nine-year intervals, each film takes place over the course of a few hours. A short sequence in the animated anthology film Waking Life also features the characters.

This week's Saturday School is about the 1987 Mabel Cheung-directed film "An Autumn's Tale," starring Chow Yun-fat and Cherie Chung. We revisit a period in the '80s after the British have made a deal to hand over Hong Kong to China in 1997, there is a fear of of losing freedoms, a wave of emigration and a curiosity about what it'd be like to be an overseas Chinese. "An Autumn's Tale" is about Hong Kong woman named Jennifer who follows her boyfriend to New York to study, only to learn that he's found a more "liberal minded" Chinese American woman and thinks she should broaden her horizons. Her family has arranged for her to stay with someone who's a rumored to be a stand-up guy, the leader of the community, and it turns out it's Chow Yun-fat, a rambuctious working-class drinker and gambler with a soft side. Many Hong Kong films set in America at this time are martial arts action movies depicting it as the wild, wild West. "An Autumn's Tale" also shows New York's Chinatown as a grimy, slightly dangerous place, but one with the possibility of romance, especially if there's a handy fellow immigrant around to help you navigate it.

The film was based on the short story "The Hypnotist" by Tod Browning, who also directed the film. London After Midnight starred Lon Chaney, Marceline Day, Conrad Nagel, Henry B. Walthall, and Polly Moran. The movie is now lost and remains one of the most famous and eagerly sought after of all lost films. The last known copy was destroyed in the 1967 MGM Vault fire. Born in Hong Kong in 1955, Lam initially went to an acting school. After finding he preferred making films to acting, he went to Canada to study film. In 1983, he returned and began filming comedy films. After the commercial success of his film Aces Go Places IV, he was allowed to develop his own film. Lam directed City on Fire in 1987, which led him to winning his first Hong Kong Film Award, and has been extensively referenced as the fundamental inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's first film, Reservoir Dogs.-- City on Fire - a 1987 Hong Kong crime film written, produced and directed by Ringo Lam, and starring Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sun Yueh. Following A Better Tomorrow (1986), it helped establish Chow's popularity as an action star in Asia, and to a lesser degree, North America.-- Reservoir Dogs - is a 1992 American crime thriller film that depicts the events before and after a botched diamond heist. The film was the feature-length debut of writer and director Quentin Tarantino, and stars Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Chris Penn, Lawrence Tierney, and Tim Roth. This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Here is the news. President Xi Jinping has called for improved birth, employment and elderly policies to cope with the country's aging population in a "timely, scientific and comprehensive" manner. Xi made the remarks in a written instruction made public recently. He says coping with the aging population is crucial for development and hundreds of millions of people's well-being. He calls for better top-down design based on current situations and future expectations. The president stresses that this issue should be put on high agenda and relevant work should be carried out during the 2016 to 2020 period. China has well over 200 million people aged 60 or above, more than 15 percent of the total population. The figure is expected to reach 243 million by 2020. Old age care lags far behind demand and varies greatly between regions. In a separate written instruction, Premier Li Keqiang has urged authorities to take a scientific approach to policies and suggestions on the aging issue. In a recent meeting, Wang Yong, head of the National Working Commission on Aging, has urged related departments to get down to work. He says the focus should be on pressing issues for the elderly, so they feel the benefit. This is NEWS Plus Special English. A recent government guideline on urban planning has sparked heated debate among Internet users over opening up gated residential communities to public road system; and an online poll shows that a majority of participants oppose it. The guideline says the roads in the newly established communities will be open to the public, becoming part of the urban road system. The old communities will gradually connect their roads to the public roads. That is to better utilize the urban land and optimize the urban road network. The news on gated communities triggered uproar among Internet users. The news was forwarded 15,000 times and generated 3,600 comments overnight on Sina Weibo, a twitter-like microblogging site. Many Internet users have expressed concern over the potential risks from opening up the gated communities, including noise and air pollution, traffic congestion and public safety. One Internet user says such highlight in the guideline might violate the country's property law, since the home owners also paid for the roads in the communities when they bought the apartments. In a latest development, a senior judge has hinted at possible revisions to the law when responding to the public concern about the opening up. While expounding the 2007 Property Law, the senior judge with the Supreme People's Court says there is still a continuing process to realize the rule of law through legislation. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Beijing plans to almost double the number of air monitoring stations to give a better idea about the true state of the city's air quality. An extra 30 monitoring stations will be added to the 35 already in operation. The stations will cover middle schools, mountainous areas and rural areas, and there will also be more monitor vehicles. Currently, the 35 existing stations observe six categories of pollutants including PM2.5, a major contaminant for Beijing's bad air. Environment authority says the upgrade will provide more data about the city's air quality. Technical preparation of the new monitor stations has been completed, though there is no timeframe for when the new stations will come online. For Beijing and its surrounding regions, the government has set a target of reducing pollution by 40 percent from 2013 levels by 2020. A senior environment official says the city's air quality has improved over the last two years. The authorities have increased efforts to reduce air pollution in the wake of the city's first "red alerts" in December, when smog engulfed the city. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Young people in China who plan to study in the United States are being advised to seek alternatives to the Scholastic Assessment Test, as a recent overhaul has made it more challenging for non-English speakers. A consultant director of the Beijing-based AW Education International says she was advising all her clients to sit the American College Test instead. This is another college placement test in the United States and suitable for those who plan to enroll in the fall semester of 2017. New sample questions from the revised Scholastic Assessment Test do not include many of the question types that Chinese students are usually good at. More time will be required for the students to prepare for the test if they want good scores. Other overseas study consultancy firms have also suggested that their clients turn to other tests. Many Chinese students were admitted to some of the best American universities after scoring high or even full marks in the former tests, but the changes may mean it is no longer easy for Chinese students to excel. Consultancy experts anticipated a reduction in the number of Chinese students taking the test this year. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Twenty-five people have been punished after they were implicated in the illegal disposal of hazardous chemicals, which killed four people in east China's Shandong Province. In October, two of the victims, Zhang Linde and Chen Jixin, hired a tanker to transport dangerous liquid chemical waste to an abandoned coal mine in the province. The two, their driver and a supercargo died from poisoning as a result of dumping the chemicals. Police say twenty-five suspects have been dealt with according to criminal procedures while several others are at large. Five local companies were involved in the case and have been suspended operation. The polluted area has been enclosed in curtain grouting, and the local environment agency is decontaminating the mine. This is NEWS Plus Special English. More than 16,700 people died as a result of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland last year. According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, more than 6.4 million cases of infectious diseases were reported on the mainland. Of the total, 13 cases of cholera, categorized as a Class A infectious disease under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, were reported with no deaths. More than three million cases were classified as Class B infectious diseases, which resulted in 16,600 deaths. HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis, and human infection of H7N9 avian influenza accounted for almost 99 percent of deaths in this category. Category C diseases were responsible for more than 3.4 million cases and 160 deaths. Foot and mouth disease, infectious diarrhea, and influenza were the most prevalent in this category, accounting for almost 98 percent of deaths. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. With great verve and passion, Chinese people around the world have celebrated their Lantern Festival in both traditional and trendy ways. The festival, which fell on Feb. 22 this year, brought an end to this year's Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations. It is the day when people see themselves starting a new life in a new year. In China, Lantern Festival is an important family day, but unlike Spring Festival when people stay home for family dinners, it is a day for going out and about. In southwest China's Sichuan Province, 20 dragon dance troupes gathered in Luxian County. A team of dancers under a long "dragon costume" painted red or gold used poles to manipulate the dragon's head and serpentine body. They danced to the accompaniment of drums, twisting the dragon as it danced, shaking its head and swinging its tail through the crowds. Another folk tradition, the Yangko dance, was performed in Yan'an city, the "red cradle" of the Chinese revolution in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. Staging the dance on Lantern Festival has become a tradition in the city. This year, around 3,000 performers in bright costumes with colorful umbrellas, fans and red ribbons danced to local folk music and drums. In Taiwan, the annual lantern exhibition has as its centerpiece a 26-meter figure of the Monkey King, the leading character in the Chinese classic "Journey to the West" to celebrate the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. In Shanghai, the Yuyuan Garden Fair not only presents traditional lanterns but also the latest high-tech lighting. With a monkey theme, the lantern fair features lasers and pop music. The modern shows attract huge numbers of people. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Tourists from the Chinese mainland are spending more in Taiwan than any other group. Local paper Economic Daily News reports that Japanese tourists were used to top the list for highest average expenditure per person daily when traveling in Taiwan. It is the first time that Chinese mainland tourists have taken the top spot since Taiwan opened up its tourism to visitors from Chinese mainland in 2008. According to Taiwan's tourism authority, every traveler from Chinese mainland on average spent 230 U.S. dollars per day, more than the average expenditure of 220 dollars Japanese spent in the first three quarters last year. Also, every Chinese mainland tourist on average spent almost 123 dollars on shopping, or 40 dollars more than that spent by a Japanese tourist. Japanese tourists have cut down on overseas spending as the yen devaluated sharply and domestic consumption tax rose. The daily expense of Japanese and Chinese mainland tourist in 2014 was 243 and 242 dollars respectively. This is NEWS Plus Special English. China's box office sales totaled 580 million yuan, roughly 88 million U.S. dollars, on Valentine's Day, representing a new high from previous years. China Film News reports that the box office surged by more than 150 percent from the same day last year. More than half of the sales were generated by "Mermaid", a sci-fi comedy by Stephen Chow, a famed Hong Kong director and comedian. "The Monkey King 2" took the second place with around 95 million yuan, while "From Vegas to Macau III", starring Hong Kong actors Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, scored 85 million yuan to come in third. The Valentine's Day box office in 2016 increased markedly due to the date closely following the Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Feb. 13th. The newspaper says the box office surge during the Spring Festival holiday, which totaled 3 billion yuan from Feb. 8 to 13, spilled over into the Valentine's Day. For the past two years, Valentine's Day was several days before or after the holiday. This is NEWS Plus Special English. (全文见周日微信。)

This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Here is the news. China has begun a national key research and development plan to streamline numerous state-funded scientific and technological programs. The plan focuses on research in fields vital to the country's development and people's well-being. The research fields cover agriculture, energy, the environment and health, as well as strategic fields key to industrial competitiveness, innovation and national security. The plan now covers 59 specific projects. It merges several prominent state sci-tech programs focused on key fields including biotechnology, space, information and energy. Breakthroughs of the programs included supercomputer Tianhe-1, manned deep-sea research submarine Jiaolong, and super hybrid rice. The plan aims to address low efficiency resulting from redundant programs. More than 100 projects will be merged into five plans, namely, natural science, major sci-tech, key research and development plan, technical innovation and the sci-tech human resources. The national key research and development plan is the first to be started. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Chinese scientists have developed a system to measure the leak rate for a vacuum environment which will be used in the country's third step moon exploration program. The measurement system will help scientists work out a better way to preserve samples from the moon, which are stored in a vacuum capsule, increasing the accuracy of research. The third step of the lunar exploration project involves taking samples from the surface of the moon and bringing them back to earth. The samples will be packed in a vacuum environment. The accuracy of measuring the finest leak in a vacuum capsule will have direct impact on the research result of the samples. The system will ensure a similar vacuum environment as found on the moon. It will also make sure that the two kilograms of samples remain uncontaminated on their way back to earth, preventing them from being affected by any kinds of environment changes, including extremely high or low temperatures. China has a three-step moon exploration project, namely, orbiting, landing and returning from the moon. Chang'e-5 lunar probe is expected to be launched around 2017 to finish the last chapter of the project. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Chinese researchers have successfully created autistic monkeys by implanting autism-related genes into monkey embryos. The monkeys are the world's first nonhuman primates to show the effects of autism. The study will play an important role in studying the pathology of the condition and exploring effective intervention and treatment. The research has demonstrated the feasibility of studying brain disorders with genetically engineered primates. That's according to neuroscientist Muming Poo, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. Poo says for quite a long time, there has been little good drug innovation in autism due to the lack of suitable animal models. This work will allow researchers to conduct deeper studies into autism and the brain's working mechanism. Autism spectrum disorder is one of a range of neurodevelopment problems. People with the condition usually exhibit defects in social interaction, stereotyped repetitive behaviors, anxiety and emotional difficulties. In recent years, the incidence of autism has continued to rise globally, and there is no effective treatment. Around four in every 1,000 Chinese children between ages 6 and 12 have the condition. Southwest China's Guizhou Province is expected to evacuate more than 9,000 people for the protection of the world's largest ever radio telescope before its completion in September. The evacuation is facilitated by a proposal delivered last year by members of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the top advisory body. The proposal asks the provincial government to remove local homes less than 5 kilometers away from the Aperture Spherical Telescope, to create a sound electromagnetic wave environment. Guizhou is expected to resettle people from two counties in four settlements by the end of September. Each of the involved residents will get 12,000 yuan, roughly 1,800 U.S. dollars subsidy for the resettlement; and each ethnic minority household with housing difficulties will get 10,000 yuan subsidy. Construction of the telescope began in March 2011 with an investment of 1.2 billion yuan. Upon completion, the telescope, which is 500 meters in diameter, will become the world's largest of its kind. It will overtake the one in Puerto Rico, which is 300 meters in diameter. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Central China's Hunan Province is offering a reward to anyone who can decode the inscription on the back of six ancient gold coins. The Cultural Relics Bureau of Jinshi City has offered 10,000 yuan, roughly 1,500 U.S. dollars, to anyone who can explain the mystery of the coins, housed in the city's museum. A small white glazed pot containing six foreign gold coins was discovered at a farm in the 1960s and was sent to the museum in the 1980s. They are classified as top-level national cultural relics. These coins were manufactured using ancient Greek coinage method at least 650 years ago. The inscription on the front, in a rare type of Arabic, is the name of a King, but the information on the back remains unexplained. Cultural relics officials have consulted Chinese and foreign experts, but to no avail. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Online retailer Amazon China has unveiled its annual list of most romantic cities, with Zhengzhou in Henan Province declared the most romantic Chinese city of 2015. Zhengzhou led the country in the proportion of books sold last year on the topics of romance, relationship and marriage. Cities of Erdos and Baotou, both in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, ranked second and third. Among the top ten, northern Chinese cities outnumbered the southern for the first time. According to Amazon, the result does not necessarily mean that people in northern China are more romantic than their southern counterparts; and the ranking reveals many factors, not just the cultural environment of a city. China's four first-tier cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, did not feature in the top 40. Amazon says it appears that residents in smaller cities are under less pressure and have more leisure time to enjoy romantic literature. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. Fewer fireworks were used across China in the Lunar New Year, as it was banned in many places over air pollution concerns. Two thirds of people polled in 35 major Chinese cities last year were in favor of fireworks bans at Spring Festival. The research was done by the center for public opinion research at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Public concerns over air quality means people routinely check air quality and wear masks, and many own air purifiers at home. Data from the Ministry of Environmental Protection suggests that air quality only improved marginally last year in the area around Beijing. In Shanghai, fireworks are banned completely downtown, and firework purchases require real name registration to track violators. A total of 140 cities in China have banned fireworks, while another 540 cities have restrictions in place. Fewer fireworks have made sanitation workers' life easier. They cleaned up 80 percent less firework waste in Shanghai this year. In nearby Hangzhou, the host city of this year's G20 summit, fireworks have been banned for the whole year, and police have offered rewards for reporting any sales, storage, transportation or setting off of fireworks. But some people are concerned that the ban kills off a tradition, calling fireworks makers to develop more environmentally friendly alternatives. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. Both names came out on top after five pairs of names were put up for a final vote. "Fuwa" is the name of the mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. After the twins were born in June, the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center launched the project to solicit names for the cubs between July and September. More than 3,000 responses, including 900 from outside the Chinese mainland, were submitted through Sina Weibo microblog, messaging app WeChat and e-mail. The twin sisters have attracted great attention worldwide because of their famous family. Their mother "Kelin" is well known for a photo showing her watching a "panda porn" video. Three Chinese movies contributed to almost 94 percent of the box office in this period. Among them, "Mermaid", directed by Hong Kong comedian and director Stephen Chow, led the box office by making 1.5 billion yuan. "From Vegas to Macau III", starring Hong Kong actors Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, scored 680 million yuan, while "The Monkey King 2" took the third place with 650 million yuan. "Kung Fu Panda 3" was also a success, profiting 812 million yuan, since its screening on Jan. 29. China's box office earnings reached 44 billion yuan last year, up almost 50 percent over that of 2014. The number of audience totaled 1.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 51 percent. Film director Pou-Soi Cheang, producer Liu Xiaoguang and actor Hai Yitian attended the premiere. The film is adapted from the first of eight chapters of the classical Chinese novel "Journey to the West" written by Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century. The film mainly tells the story of the Monkey King, played by Donnie Yen, who is determined to be a celestial being, as he tries to learn the skill of making the dead come back to life and rebels against the Jade Emperor of Heaven after being seduced by demons. Director Cheang expressed his gratitude to IMAX and his excitement towards his new film. "It should present a different visual effect to audiences. Just now, we mentioned that 3D effects make audiences feel as if there is no screen. With IMAX, the effects are better. It makes the audience more involved in the film. What's more, I want to express my thanks to IMAX for truly presenting my original imaginations and all the pictures. I am really moved that when I was busy with the post-production of the film and wasn't able to go to the U.S., my fellow colleague adjusted each scene of film with IMAX. He told me that it felt totally different and what you wanted to see have been realized in IMAX 3D. So I'm excited and hope movie goers could spend a bit more money to see the IMAX 3D version of the film. " The film stars Donnie Yen, Aaron Kwok, Chow Yun-fat, Peter Ho, Hai Yitian and Xia Zitong. Donnie Yen plays the leading role of Monkey King and Chow Yun-fat plays the role of the Jade Emperor. Commenting on the two famous film stars, film director Cheung said they did an amazing job. "Maybe the Jade Emperor played by Chou Yun-fat is different from the one you imagined. But that role features characteristics of Chou. If another actor played the role, I would not be able to imagine it like this. This time he just holds a sword and becomes a huge dragon. At the time of filming I was not sure about the final effect but it turned out to be great. The two merge into a whole. I thank him a lot. As for Donnie Yen, I could feel his efforts when making the film every day. Every time I saw him act, I knew what I am filming is about the Monkey King. He makes one feel as if he was the Monkey King." Films or TV series about the Monkey King have been made many times before. Liu Xiaoguang, producer of the film told the press that thanks to modern technology, the visual effects are much better in their new film. "To make it straight, the most difficult thing when presenting the image of Monkey King is to separate him from gravity. Before, actors turned somersaults and later they adopted rope wire. The film 'The Monkey King: Havoc in the Heavenly Palace,' actually makes use of modern digital picture technology and separates actors from gravity." The film is to hit screens on January 31st in China and many other countries and regions.

The key to making a box office hit in China is controversy. "Police Story 2013" may not have provoked as much discussion as Feng Xiaogang's latest movie "Personal Tailor", but there are still many issues that have got filmgoers talking. The police action thriller stars Jackie Chan as a Chinese police officer caught in the machinations of a criminal gang. The owner of a nightclub kidnaps a group of partygoers, including the officer's daughter, played by Jing Tian. Chan must play along with the villains until he finds a way to release the hostages. But as the story unfolds a connection linking all characters is revealed. The majority of comments focus on Jackie Chan's performance. The 60-year-old star announced his retirement from action films when he released "Chinese Zodiac" in 2012, but as his cooperation with director Ding Sheng developed, more action scenes were added. As a result, viewers can witness Chan getting beaten up real bad and challenging his limits at such an advanced age. Most critics appreciate Chan's efforts. And remembering his energetic roles in the previous installments of the Police Story franchise set in Hong Kong, movie fans commend Chan on his latest outing, this time set in Beijing. The other talking point of the film is much more controversial. The quality of Jing Tian's acting has been questioned in previous roles, yet she's always come back with ever bigger roles. In 2013 she sent shockwaves through the movie industry by teaming up with megastars Donnie Yen, Chow Yun-fat, Jackie Chan and Liu Ye in "Special ID", "Police Story 2013" and "The Man from Macau". Working with so many stars has helped her lift her acting skills from lousy to… well, still below average. At least that's the opinion of many filmgoers who have jumped on her back yet again after what they see as a below par performance. Police Story 2013 has generated over 270 million yuan in just 6 days and is now sitting on top of the charts in terms of daily grossing. Further proof to the theory controversy creates cash.

Shaw also tried his hand at producing American films in the late 70s and early 80s, including 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner" and 1979 disaster thriller "Meteor." The influence of Shaw's movies spans vast distances. When talking about his preparation for the action film "Kill Bill", American movie director Quentin Tarantino told the press he had watched one old Shaw Brothers movie a day for a year, if not three. Tarantino also paid tribute to Shaw by beginning the film with the Shaw Brothers scallop and trumpet fanfare. As a shrewd businessman, even in his heyday, Shaw was able to sense the future would be in television. In 1967, Shaw co-founded TVB, which remains Hong Kong's dominant TV station. TVB has now grown into a multi-billion dollar TV empire with channels broadcast in 30 markets including the U.S., Canada and Taiwan. For TV audiences, TVB is the symbol of many classic television series of which only the slightest hint would send people into nostalgic daydreams. At the top of the list of classic shows is of course "the Bund", a love story between gangster boss Hui Man-Keung and Fung Ching-ching, daughter of a wealthy tycoon. And "Looking Back in Anger", a retrospective on business tycoon Ding Yau Kin's life. Another memorable classic was the 1983 martial art TV series "The Legend of the Condor Heroes". With its ever sought-after TV series, TVB has seen a considerable amount of talented individuals rise to stardom internationally. Actor Chow Yun-fat, actress Maggie Cheung, singers Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui and director Wong Kar-wai all started out at TVB. Chow Yun-fat attributes his success to Shaw. "He started TVB with his bare hands all by himself. He trained many talented stars like me. May he rest in peace." Shaw set up the TVB Talent Training Course and the beauty contest Miss Hong Kong Pageant in order to produce future stars for his TV station. One thing he probably would never have imagined is that many of the stars that the two programs cultivated, such as Tony Leung, Lau Kar-ling and Michele Monique Reis, later became the pillars of the Chinese showbiz industry. In 2011, Shaw retired from his position as chairman of TVB at the age of 104 after more than 40 years of service. However, what made Shaw more of an enduring influence is perhaps his philanthropy. He made billions in film and television and gave back nearly as much to society. Since 1985, he donated about 4.75 billion Hong Kong dollars on educational programs across the Chinese mainland. On a map recently provided by one of China's largest search engines, buildings adorned with Shaw's name are visible in clusters across the country. And in Hong Kong, it seems as if half of the public buildings have his name on them. Shaw also established "The Shaw Prize" in 2002, later widely regarded as the "Nobel of the East"; an annual award honoring those who made significant contributions to academic and scientific research or application. And on occasions of disaster relief, he was often among the top donors. Leung Chun-ying, chief executive of Hong Kong spoke out on Shaw's contributions to society. "Shaw has made great philanthropic contributions in Hong Kong, to education in both Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland and to scientific research globally. He is a venerable father figure to us." Run Run Shaw was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. China's Purple Mountain Observatory discovered an asteroid in 1964 and named it 2899 Runrun Shaw in honor of him. Across 107 years, Run Run Shaw became a guiding light that will illuminate generations for years to come.

The logo of Shaw Brothers, the initials of "SB" on a scallop shaped shield, appeared on many of the big movie hits coming out of Hong Kong during the 60s and 70s. Kung-fu movies produced by the Shaw Brothers, the studio owned by Run Run Shaw and his brother Runme Shaw, were widely adored across Asia, and among Chinese communities in western countries. In their heyday, films created by the Shaw Brothers were reportedly watched by 1.5 million people a week. Run Run Shaw's TV empire, Television Broadcasts Limited or TVB, served as the launching pad for the career for many talented individuals including actors Chow Yun-fat, Andy Lau, and Stephen Chow, to name just a few. The Chinese programs produced by TVB are seen by 300 million households around the world. Lo Hol Pang is a comic movie star who rose up thanks to a TVB Talent Training Course, a program Shaw established to cultivate actors and actresses. "Go to any place in the world, if Chinese communities exist there, they know us. Even in very remote places, they still know us because they watched us on video tape. Sometimes when a certain TV episode came out on a certain night, the street would become so quite that even bus drivers went home to wait for the episode to be aired." Run Run Shaw was born the sixth child of seven to a wealthy textile merchant in Ningbo, an eastern city close to Shanghai. He therefore received the nickname "Uncle Six". His brother Runme set up a silent film studio, Unique Film Production Co., in 1925 in Shanghai. At the age of 19, Shaw interrupted his study during a summer vacation and went to Singapore to market films to Southeast Asia's Chinese communities with his three brothers: Runji, Runde and Runme. Exactly how the name Run Run came into being remains a mystery. James Wong, lyricist for the theme song of Shaw's hit TV series "The Bund", quoted Shaw in one of his books as saying that the name Run Run imitated the pronunciation of Shaw's original name "Ren Leng" in his local dialect in Ningbo. Actor Chow Yun-fat once joked about how Shaw got the name because back in Singapore he was always running between different Chinese communities, carrying his film rolls and trying to exhibit or distribute their films. Chow's explanation may be a joke, but it somehow reflected the painstaking effort Shaw made to develop the Singaporean film market. Zhu Chunting is Shaw's biographer. "When they first started out in Singapore, they used a rickshaw to carry their screening equipment and ran from village to village to sell their films. It was really hard work." The business of Shaw and his brothers kept growing and eventually they opened 139 movie theaters across the Southeast Asian region. During the 1930s, Shaw also produced The White Golden Dragon, the first Chinese film featuring sound, which created quite a sensation back then. But the advent of World War II destroyed everything. In 1941, the Japanese invaded Singapore, stripped their theaters and confiscated their film equipment. Legend has it that Shaw and his brothers buried gold and jewelry during the war and it was this gold and jewelry that enabled them to resume their business at full strength after the war. In 1957, Shaw returned to Hong Kong which was then the center of the Chinese film industry. He shifted the company's focus from exhibiting films to producing them and renamed the company "Shaw Brothers". He bought a 46-acre plot in Clearwater Bay, Kowloon, shaved a hill there, built and opened Movietown on the land in 1961. The establishment of Movietown, later reputed as "Hollywood East", ushered in the golden age of the 1960s and 1970s during which Shaw popularized a dozen film genres especially Kung fu movies and nurtured a galaxy of female stars. Linda Lin Dai graced Li Han-hsiang's blockbuster opera film "The Kingdom and the Beauty" in 1959. Betty Loh played an elegant and brave young lady who dressed up as a man in order to spend more time with her beloved in 1963 movie "The Love Eterne" which broke office records in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Cheng Pei-pei who later starred a major role in Ang Lee's Oscar Winning film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, rose to fame after starring in Shaw's pioneering 1966 kung fu movie "Come Drink with Me" as a solemn warrior goddess. Perhaps the only talent that slipped out of Shaw's reach was Bruce Lee who signed a contract with Shaw's rival, Golden Harvest, which was willing to accommodate Lee's high salary demands. Shaw Brothers was considered one of the most productive film studios in the world back then, pumping out 20 to 40 films a year. Stars lived in a dorm on-site, budgets were low and work shifts were tightly arranged. It was almost like an assembly line. Most of Shaw's films featured kung fu, sword fighting or Asian gangsters. But what attracted theater goers was not only the action and fighting, it was also the legacy of traditions embedded in the storylines. Pak Tong Cheuk, Director at the Academy of Films, Hong Kong Baptist University, talks about the attractive elements of Shaw's films. "Where we could find ourselves is in films, especially in Shaw's. We could find a lot of traditional Chinese cultural imagination and reference there."
