This week we are discussing the 2002 wuxia epic: Hero (英雄). Join us as we talk about the stunning visuals, colorful chapters, understanding martial arts films, political readings, Indy's love of Tony Leung (and most of the cast, really), Chinese history, and a bunch of other things I've already forgotten.   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa   Hero (Chinese: 英雄; pinyin: Yīngxióng) is a 2002 wuxia martial arts film[3] directed, co-written, and produced by Zhang Yimou, and starring Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi, Donnie Yen and Chen Daoming.[4] The cinematography was by Christopher Doyle, and the musical score composed by Tan Dun. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 75th Academy Awards. The historical background of the film refers to the Warring States Period in ancient China, when China was divided into seven states. In 227–221 BC, the Qin state was about to unify the other six states, assassins from the six states were sent to assassinate the king of Qin. One of the most famous incidents was Jing Ke's attempted assassination of the King of Qin.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE mitverfolgt.

As a powerlifting champion, three-time ‘Miss Fitness' winner in Japan and an action film star, Michiko Nishiwaki has been on quite a journey. When she left school to start working in human resources for the Mitsubishi bank in the 1970s, her life goals were similar to many other Japanese women in her position; to find a husband and have children. But for Michiko - obsessed with gymnastics, karate, fitness, singing and the arts from an early age - she decided to take a different path. Following her brother into the fitness industry, she became a gym owner in Japan and a pioneer in women's bodybuilding. At the height of her fame in the 1980s, she used her celebrity to break taboos, confronting the traditional image of women as the ‘weaker' sex in Japanese society, and using film and television to promote the health benefits of weight-training. Her fame caught the attention of Golden Harvest in Hong Kong, who invited her to make her big-screen debut in the 1985 action comedy, My Lucky Stars, alongside Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. A career as a Hong Kong martial arts star beckoned, mostly portraying evil Japanese gangsters in an array of wild, ‘girls with guns' action movies. In the late 1990s, she relocated to Hollywood, becoming a stunt performer in films like Charlie's Angels, Rush Hour 2 and Kill Bill, and doubling for the likes of Lucy Liu, Kelly Hu and Zhang Ziyi. Now, aged 64, she is making a comeback after over a decade away from the industry, working as Michelle Yeoh's stand-in for the bonkers 2021 smash hit, Everything Everywhere All at Once. As she approaches her film career with a renewed focus, what does the next chapter in Michiko's already incredible and multifaceted career look like? A huge thank you to Sally Hinata for arranging this conversation.LINKSMichiko Nishiwaki on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michikodb/Michiko Nishiwaki podcast page: https://bit.ly/KFMGPodMichikoNishiwakiMichiko Nishiwaki profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/ProfileMichikoNishiwakiMichiko Nishiwaki on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0632811/'Everything Everywhere All at Once' - Kung Fu Movie Guide review: https://bit.ly/EEAAO2022'Everything Everywhere All at Once' trailer: https://youtu.be/wxN1T1uxQ2g'My Lucky Stars' fight scene: https://youtu.be/IVJY2L4M54c'God of Gamblers' dice scene: https://youtu.be/o2Y1Q8Go7HsMomoe Yamaguchi sings 'Cosmos' on Japanese television in 1977: https://youtu.be/9P-ePLE4t3Y'Devil Hunters' stunt goes wrong, featuring Moon Lee and Sibelle Hu: https://youtu.be/7m90uRyGDi4 Michiko interview on Japanese television in 1983: https://youtu.be/TxqmpkWvUuU Hosted on Acast. Despite critical and commercial acclaim in the west, it wasn't well received everywhere though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmOYLyIiL1g (Laura Suen analyses the fight scene between Yu Jen and Yu Shu Lien in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) I would love to hear your thoughts on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ! Film writers Hanna Flint (Fade to Black podcast, The First Film Club) and Leila Latif (Little White Lies, Curzon, Total Film) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Hannah's choice Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a 2000 wuxia (the adventures of martial artists in ancient China) film. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun-fat as Li Mu Bai, Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien and Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu. Li Mu Bai, a warrior, asks Yu Shu Lien, the woman he loves, to pass on his sword, Green Destiny, to Sir Te. However, when the sword is stolen, Li embarks on a mission to find it. It broke records for its box office gross for a foreign-language film and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film. The highest ever for a non-English language film, until it was equaled by Roma in 2018. The film gave a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films and led the way for films such as House of Flying Daggers and Hero having success with Western audiences. Unsurprisingly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon scores highly from Flixwatcher and guests - with a very, very strong recommendability rating. Slightly lower scores for small screen give an overall rating of 4.39   [supsystic-tables id=268] Episode #256 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #256 Crew of Leila Latif (@Leila_Latif) and Hanna Ines Flint (@HannaFlint) from first_filmclub Find their Websites online at https://www.leilalatif.com/ and at https://twitter.com/artsemergency and at https://twitter.com/thegoodagencyuk and at https://twitter.com/first_filmclub and at https://twitter.com/fadetoblackpod and at https://www.flintonfilm.com/ Please make sure you give them some love   More about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon For more info on Never Rarely Sometimes Always, you can visit Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon IMDb page here or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Rotten Tomatoes page here. The other style of conflict takes place on the war-torn fields of inner turmoil and forbidden love. Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi portray parallel characters whose internal struggle pits what they have outwardly accepted against what they inwardly long for. And when Chow Yun-fat's Green Destiny sword is stolen, all three characters embark on a path that becomes a collision course of emotion and a final frontier for their redemption. Ang Lee has made a career of always doing something different, so it likely came as no surprise to people after his Jane Austen adaptation, his 70s period family drama, and his western that he then moved straight into a Chinese wuxia film full of magical realism. Despite the wide variance between subjects, his passion for stories full of emotion and repression is reflected in them all in some capacity. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Foreign Language Films Nominated for Best Picture series with Lee’s 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. We talk about the nature of this film and how it became such a touchstone for not only celebrating Asian culture but also a shift in wirework and stunts in films. We look at the nature of emotion in Lee’s films and how that’s reflected throughout with various characters here. We discuss the challenge of making a film like this with a cast who didn’t all speak Mandarin, or did with heavy accents. Having directed and produced such shows as Jack Ryan, Hunters, For All Mankind, Hell On Wheels, Legion, Waco, Goliath, and frankly too many others films and shows to count...Dennie Gordon is no stranger to working with giant crews on massive sets. Having also directed a feature film in China during the SARS outbreak, I think it’s safe to say that Dennie knows something about keeping her crew members safe despite the risks. And not more than 2 minutes into our interview, Dennie rolled the following grenade into the middle of the room: “I think the cameras are going to start rolling again when there’s a vaccine.” Whoah. So what does that mean for everyone who’s livelihoods depend on cameras rolling? On needing makeup and hair done, sets to be designed, built, and painted...lights to be set up, focused to be pulled, costumes to be purchased and fitted, and in the case of most of my listeners...footage that needs to be cut. What’s the plan if cameras don’t roll again until we have a vaccine? And are there alternatives? Will production flee to other states or other countries that are willing to take the risks? Are crew members going to have to choose between unemployment or signing death waivers? There are a lot of questions right now, and neither I nor Dennie promise to have the answers. But we do our best to discuss all of the various options out there so all of us can make more informed decisions about what comes next. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Despite the “when there’s a vaccine” grenade Dennie rolled into the room, she assures us the Industry is putting protocols in place to make sets as safe as possible. But we have a long road ahead. Why she thinks talk shows, game shows, stage studio events will come back much sooner. Location set pieces won’t come back for a while. The astonishing story of Dennie Gordon's experience working on a feature film in China DURING the SARS-COV2 outbreak. Insurance. Waivers. Liability… Who’s really going to take this on at the end of the day? What should we expect working on set to look like before a vaccine? How do we tell good stories while following physical distancing guidelines? How can creative professionals continue building their careers? After all, we never learn anything when we’re not working. How will we be able to collaborate at the same level as before? For example, if writer’s rooms are meeting on Zoom calls instead of in person, how much gets lost in the creative process? Why not create stories that reflect the reality we’re living in with COVID-19? Dennie’s thoughts on having everyone live on set as a closed community where everyone is tested. (Example: Tyler Perry who built a set on a former army barracks.) Does she think people will be willing to live in a quarantined set, isolated from family and friends for months just to have a job again? What about reality shows? Will they resume before scripted? People in some countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Czechoslovakia, Iceland, & South Korea have already started shooting. What opportunities does that present? How do you navigate production when one state says they’re not ready to start shooting because it’s unsafe and in the next state, they’re saying “We’re already making television, what are you guys doing over there?” Since it’s going to be more expensive for productions to operate and doing so with less people, and considering that so many people will want to work and do it for less money, what effect do you expect that downward pressure on wages to have and what would you hope to see? What are we going to do about post-production or are they in a good enough position with remote workflows? Can you still tell the same quality stories if you never meet your post-production crew in person? What does pilot season look like? Do we think the structure of the way we do the business side of things is going to change? What do you think is going to happen to television in general considering the expected reduction in the volume of shows that will be produced? What are some of the ideas you’ve come up with to pivot and be innovative when it looks like you may not be able to go back to directing for a year or two? Does it make sense for you to provide value in other ways such as mentorship? And what does mentorship and networking look like in the time of coronavirus? Dennie Gordon’s words of wisdom: “Use this time. When this is all over, people will be able to define themselves by how they used this time.” Why Dennie expects us to have to get much better at communicating their ideas to each other. Do you think we’ll end up going towards making features and not doing episodic T.V. for a long time because it’s just so hard to sustain the level of production T.V. requires? Can we expect a resurgence of small indie movies? Guest Bio: Dennie Gordon has been a trailblazing female director her entire career; spanning the worlds of feature films, television series, mini-series and branded content. Her range of genre busting entertainment spans an unusual spectrum of comedy and drama. After being one of the first women to graduate from Yale's School of Drama with an MFA in Directing, Gordon first gained recognition when A HARD RAIN was chosen by Showtime's Discovery Program. Thanks to Steven Spielberg, a rough cut of her film attracted the attention of George Lucas who donated the film's mix at Skywalker Ranch. A HARD RAIN, which Gordon also wrote, went on to win dramatic awards at the British Short Film Festival and the Hampton's Film Festival. This film also caught the eye of David E. Kelley who enlisted Gordon to helm multiple episodes of his television series including GOLIATH, (where she was Co EP) PICKET FENCES, CHICAGO HOPE, ALLY MCBEAL, and THE PRACTICE. Gordon has directed over 100 hours of network television including such critically acclaimed series as LEGION, which was on many critic’s lists as a top 10 show of 2017, with the “astounding direction of Dennie Gordon and her twisted visionary imagery taking the X-Men universe to a whole new level”. Her other work includes BLOODLINE, RECTIFY, EMPIRE, KINGDOM, POWER, HELL ON WHEELS, GRACE & FRANKIE, THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, Aaron Sorkin’s SPORTS NIGHT, and HBO's TRACEY TAKES ON, for which Gordon won the DGA Comedy Award. Gordon recently completed the mini-series WACO, JACK RYAN Season 2 FOR ALL MANKIND for Apple, and THE HUNT starring Al Pacino. Gordon directed the comedy cult hit JOE DIRT starring David Spade, and Christopher Walken, and WHAT A GIRL WANTS starring Oscar Winner Colin Firth, Dame Eileen Atkins, and Jonathan Pryce. Gordon was the first American woman to direct a film for the domestic Chinese market, called MY LUCKY STAR. The 2013 film starred Oscar nominee Zhang Ziyi and Wang Leehom and was filmed in China and Singapore in the summer of 2012. MY LUCKY STAR was the number one film in China for 4 weeks on 5000 screens. Gordon is a sought after commercial director having completed campaigns for Honda, Toyota, Tsingtao beer and Xcel energy as well as campaigns with Jimmy Fallon, Betty White, Adam Devine and Don Cheadle. She recently completed a short dramatic film for Huawei, which was shot in Prague. She is repped by Little Minx and CAA. Dennie Gordon's website Dennie in the L.A. Das war 2000 in Cannes der große Überraschungs-Hit des Festivals. «Sense and Sensibility with martial arts» hatte Ang Lee versprochen und dies auch eingehalten. This was the big surprise hit of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Ang Lee had promised "Sense and Sensibility with martial arts" and came through with flying colours (and fighters). In Cannes, there were round tables with Ang Lee and the actresses Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi; in Zurich, I was subsequently granted a one-to-one conversation with Ang Lee before the film's theatrical release. Taken together, these conversations not only provide a lot of background to this great film; in addition, Ang Lee relates «Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon» to his previous work, Michelle Yeoh draws comparisons to other wuxia films and to James Bond, while Zhang Ziyi explains the differences between the directors Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou, whose films «The Road Home» (1999) and «House of Flying Daggers» (2004) starring Zhang Ziyi we hope to screen later this year.

*WARNING!* Total spoilers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters! *WARNING!* In this special Theatrical Edition of Catching Up On Cinema, Kyle and Trevor head out to the theater to check out the 3rd entry in Legendary's "Monsterverse" franchise, Michael Dougherty's Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)! Featuring the heaviest of heavy hitters in the long lived Godzilla franchise, the movie is an unapologetic love letter to the older generation Godzilla films. While the human aspect of the story and plot is both problematic and unintentionally silly, the monster action is solid, and as Trevor mentions early on in the episode, most of the film's weaker aspects can actually be interpreted as the filmmaker's remaining true to the source material. Kyle Chandler, beating off to the sounds of wolves eating! Vera Farmiga as perhaps the most unstable and unforgivable character in recent film history! Millie Bobby Brown as the "Kenny" of the film! Ken Watanabe, sacrificing himself for to enhance the film's Chinese box office earnings! Zhang Ziyi as 2 different characters! How the Hell did I miss that!? Charles Dance, somehow failing to go "full evil" over the course of a 2 hour+ movie! And Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, delivering the goods on the few occasions the editor sees fit to let them!

The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, screw up time and space with this week's review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018). The surprise third installment of JJ Abrams' Cloverfield-verse, which dropped on Super Bowl Sunday on Netflix, is a cautionary tale that somewhat ties together the previous films in the series, Cloverfield (2008) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016). Even against a backdrop that includes a global energy crisis and tinkering with the multiverse with an out-of-this-world particle accelerator, the film's strength lies in its impressive cast and diverse characters. The Cloverfield Paradox stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Brühl, Zhang Ziyi, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki and more.

"How swift your sword must be." Zhang Yimou had always wanted to direct an action film, and after years of working on the script, he finally had his chance with his ambitious visual feast, 2002’s Hero. Shot all over China starring some of the hottest Chinese stars telling a story about the assassination attempt on the King of Qin several thousand years ago, the film was the most expensive project in China’s history. Luckily, it also became the highest-grossing up to that point. Considering the last two films we talked about on the show were banned for years, it’s great to see Zhang and China finding a common ground with this film. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Zhang Yimou series with 2002’s Hero. We talk about what this film does as far as depicting a true story, but done in a way that allows Zhang to try his hand at action (with help from action director Tony Ching). We look at all of Zhang’s filmmaking techniques that he throws at this film – the colors, the shot compositions, the shot lengths, the operatic quality – and how well they work. We discuss Jet Li, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi and Donnie Yen and what they all bring to the table here. And we discuss how Miramax not only delayed the film’s release numerous times but also made the egregious decision to replace Jet Li’s character’s sword in the poster with something else incorrect for the period, only to try to connect it to Quentin Tarantino and his Kill Bill films. It’s a gorgeous film that tells a beautiful and tragic story, but one that would still be incredibly easy to return to. So check out the movie then tune in! [School of Movies 2017]   For our 200th movie episode we celebrate the occasion by taking on another immensely challenging film, not because it's a mixed bag that's hard to place, but because it's pretty much perfectly crafted, very personal to us, dauntingly important and critically acclaimed. So we had to somehow shed new light on a masterpiece. This is why we put things like this off. Paschal Dooley commissioned this one to match his prior request of Hero, and it forms another part in the trilogy of epic, Chinese wuxia ("wushu") period piece films featuring the amazingly beautiful Zhang Ziyi.   This time, Ang Lee takes what he learned from the interpersonal drama of The Ice Storm and the Jane Austen propriety of Sense and Sensibility to convey a drama surrounding two couples. One middle-aged and regretful of time misspent and one young and fearful of lives that almost certainly will not bring them what they want. And then there's fighting, glorious martial arts with weightless wire-work, choreographed by the master himself, Yuen Woo-ping.

The School of Movies Archive

[School of Movies 2017] In another commissioned show this week we cover the 2002 Chinese blockbuster from the director of The Great Wall. Loosely (and as we find out that means REALLY loosely) based on a real life assassination attempt on the first emperor of China, this is one of Jet Li's most prestigious appearances. Featuring a trio of assassins played by Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, and the amazing Donnie Yen, this blends serious, historical drama with stunningly photographed, excellently choreographed martial arts. It's immense in scale, breathtaking in beauty and thought-provoking in story. It's also one of the Zhang Ziyi trilogy of period-set martial arts spectaculars, the other two being House of Flying Daggers by the same director as Hero, Zhang Yimou, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon directed by Ang Li. All three are absolutely worth your viewing time, especially on blu ray.

A “celebrity photographer who also photographs celebrities”, Russel Wong is one of the most profiled photographers in Singapore and Asia.  He enjoys the acclaim of being the first Singaporean to break into the notoriously difficult Hollywood movie industry, and is also among the elite photographers commissioned to photograph covers for Time magazine. From his beginnings in sports photography covering world record miler Sebastian Coe, Russel went on to carry out coveted photographic work for Nike, capturing luminaries including Carl Lewis, Mary Decker and John McEnroe.  A Fine Arts degree in Photography from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles followed, and it was then that Russel began to establish a name for himself in international fashion photography, working for the world-renown Elite Modeling Agency. His celebrity fashion spreads for the Los Angeles Times opened the door to working with top celebrities like Joan Chen, Isabella Rossellini, Oliver Stone, Paloma Picasso, Michael Jackson, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Glenn Close, David Lynch, Bruce Willis, and Jackie Chan.  In developing a signature style amidst this highly competitive culture of fashion photography, Russel strove to distinguish his work by re-defining and re-styling the images of these glamorous figures with greater depth, texture and imagination.  Supermodels, designers and musicians soon populated his portfolio – Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valetta, Kenzo, Anna Sui, Yo Yo Ma, and Luciano Pavarotti. The establishment of his photographic studio in Singapore in 1989 brought in accounts with Raffles Hotel, Singapore Airlines, Cartier, American Express, Nike, British Airways, Sony, Visa, Compaq, Four Seasons Hotel, Nokia, The Ritz Carlton Hotel, the Development Bank of Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board, Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore Telecoms and Apple.  Meanwhile, the success of his commercial work also began to draw the attention of leading publications, which all sought Russel's work to grace their covers.  These include the debut cover of Vogue Singapore, and international covers for Time, Fortune, Elle, GQ, Marie Claire, New York Times and Los Angeles Times. The allure and acclaim of Russel's work draws from his ability to infuse his commercial accounts with creative elements, combined with a sensitive, thoughtful take on his subjects.  This is clearly in the vein of the photographers he admires and appreciates – Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts.  Such balance and versatility may be seen in Russel's work photographing stories and fashion spreads for movie sets, such as Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth, and publicity shoots for Lee Ang's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Zhang Yimou's Hero and House of Flying Daggers, as well as portraits of Asian movie starts like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fatt, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi. Russel's latest work in filmmaking has also been an impactful one, having recently attended the prestigious New York University Film Program, and with plans underway for directing his first feature film.  To date, he has directed numerous award-winning commercials, from a Breast Cancer spot that earned him a CLIO award – the advertising industry's Oscar equivalent – to commercials for Discovery Channel featuring Joan Chen, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.  Also referred to as “The Richard Avedon of Asia” by many, he was recently commissioned to photograph a set of portraits for the Prime Minister of Singapore. Today, Russel's photography continues to make its mark both regionally and internationally.  In its millennium issue, a top regional magazine voted Russel as one of the Asians to look out for in the next millennium.  He is the first Singaporean photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (Russel Wong:  1980 – 2005), and also the first and only photographer to be invited for the art residency at the renowned Singapore Tyler Print Institute.  In addition, his art works can be found in public and private collections, with his “Bamboo Forest” print going for a record US$40,000 at a recent Christies auction in Hong Kong. Russel is one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show.   In the podcast, Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back!  Destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Several of Steven's guests have included:  Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett;  CNN's Richard Quest & Bill Weir; Journalist-Humorist-Actor Mo Rocca (of CBS Sunday Morning & The Cooking Channel's "My Grandmother's Ravioli" fame); Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.; as well as leading photographers, artists, writers and more.

Xiaohua: Celebrities across China are outraged at their unauthorized wax figures being included in a museum in Sichuan Province that has been dubbed by netizens as "the ugliest wax museum."四川一处蜡像馆因未经允许展出了名人蜡像而引来众多明星的不满,这座蜡像馆也被网民称为“史上最丑蜡像馆”。So are you shocked by these figures as well?Mark: There were some great pictures of them. I think I can sum it up very simply and quickly by saying that I’m looking at a photo, and it’s the picture of the wax work of Zhang Ziyi,Heyang: It claims to be.Mark: and the next one is Gong Li, right? But when I saw it, I thought that the one of Gong Li was the real Zhang Ziyi standing next to her wax work, and they do look very similar. Heyang: What?!Xiaohua: That’s the mildest criticism I’ve ever heard. Heyang: Yes. And I hope the teams that work for both actresses are not listening to our show, because I firmly disagree with you, Mark, and I don’t think that’s true at all. Both look… They don’t look like humans I think. And look what they’re wearing! It’s like straight from the 1960s or something. How could they have the audacity of putting up signs claiming that these are wax figures that are supposed to be these two actresses?Mark: But don’t you think that they’re so bad that they’re good? And I think people will go and see these cause they’re so awful. I think the celebrities will be queuing up to have theirs put in there. And actually the reverse is happening now. But I mean they’re so awful it’s kind of like a claim to fame to be in there and have your terrible wax figure in this place. Xiaohua: That’s why the museum actually said “during the past few years, we’ve tried everything for us to be more known, but this is the least expected way for us to become famous”.Heyang: It should be infamous, really. And it’s so bad it feels like defamation. It’s meant to make these people look bad. I think this is what it is. Mark: I don’t think it’s set out to make them look bad. It’s just they’re not very good at making them. Heyang: They’re crap at making them. Mark: One of them was from a Beijing Waxwork Museum. Not Madame Tussaud’s we must add. It wasn’t that one. But I think it’s pretty good. I might actually go and have a look, and see if we can spot who is who. This is what I think will be attractive to people to have their figure put in them. Heyang: There was only one figure of Andy Lau that looks a tiny bit like the real singer, and I suppose Andy Lau is this person’s love of life, otherwise he would not put so much effort in trying to make this wax figure remotely like him. Mark: Remember one thing. It’s all about entertainment. And the Waxwork Museum is certainly entertaining the whole of China now with these pictures and with the waxworks. So they’re succeeding. Heyang: But there’s good publicity and bad publicity. This is..Mark: But it’s all entertaining and that’s what this place is all about. It’s a place where people go and be entertained. In this case, instead of admiring the statues they can have a good laugh at them, can’t they?Xiaohua: Also, in order to defend their work, one of the “artists” who created these selections said that well these celebrities when they don’t put makeup on, they’re probably just like that. Heyang: That’s terrible. Xiaohua: What would you say to this?Mark: I would challenge any of the critics to try to make something that looked as much like a human as these people. They’re not totally talentless. I mean we couldn’t make anything like that, couldn’t we?Xiaohua: True.Heyang: No! I think if I really have a go at this, I might do better. I probably will. Xiaohua: Really? Let’s do a challenge about that.

Hello and welcome to this edition of "In the Spotlight", a show featuring arts, culture and showbiz from right here in China. I'm your host Li Ningjing. The fourth Beijing International Film Festival has just concluded in Beijing. The Festival attracted film makers, distributors and film lovers from all over the world, including movie stars Jean Reno, Lea Seydoux and Adrien Brody as well as Chinese actresses Zhang Ziyi, Fan Bingbing and Liu Yifei. American director Oliver Stone, "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuaron and Hong Kong director John Woo also joined the forums at the festival to share their views on film making and the future of the global film industry. So in this special edition of In the Spotlight, we'll focus on the Beijing International Film Festival and take an in-depth look at the state of the Chinese movie industry, which seems to be showing causes of worry for industry insiders despite impressive box office gains. We'll also be speaking with Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron on his recent Oscar win and possible collaboration with China. On top of that, a restoration of a famous 1930s Chinese production, The Goddess also screened during the festival. These stories and more are all in the pipeline. Do stay with us. ******************************** Alfonso Cuaron is one of the most fascinating directors in the world, especially after his win at the Oscars this year for his film, Gravity. Now, he is sharing his wisdom with young filmmakers in China at the Beijing International Film Festival. Our reporter Doris Wang caught up with him to get a glimpse inside the mind of this creative genius. That was Doris Wang talking to Alfonso Cuaron about his Oscar win and the possibility of making a movie in China. ******************************** This is Alfonso Cuaron's second visit to Beijng. He was talkative when sharing his impressions of the mega city. "It's vast. It's huge. It's polluted. And also at the same time it's of a big energy. Also you can feel that it's a city of young people. You can see that. You can feel that in the street. Of course I've going around in the historical sites. They are absolutely amazing. What I really enjoyed is getting lost in Hutongs." Cuaron admitted that his mandarin was not amazing. He turned to body language when he was lost in the Hutong alleys and needed to ask for directions. But he added that he found familiarity between himself and the people he met in Beijing's Hutongs. "I have gestured to them. And they gestured back and talked to me. And maybe they laughed. But I found again it felt somehow familiar. The region. The experience. There is warm as well. That again it feels for me similar from where I come from. It's completely different cultures. But there's familiarity to me." for compelte script: http://english.cri.cn/7146/2014/04/22/3301s823313.htm
