For the 39th episode of the Integral Stage Authors Series, Layman cozies up in a yurt with Simon Cox to talk about his recent book, The Subtle Body: A Genealogy. Simon tells Layman about his history studying martial arts, including six years under a kung fu master on Wudang Mountain in China, and the path that led him to a deep, graduate-level comparative exploration of conceptions of the subtle body in Taoist and Tibetan Buddhist / Bon traditions. What are the similarities and differences between Eastern models of the subtle body and those we have inherited from the Neo-Platonists? How have these models been conflated in past scholarship? What did Crowley bring to the subject? What are the practical and onto-epistemological implications of a deep understanding of subtle body tradition and practice? What are some promising paths of future research? What does this tradition have to contribute to the rising interest in neo-animism in our time, or even the strange stories about interdimensional beings now circulating in the halls of Congress following the recent UAP hearings? With a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Chicago, she combines her financial acumen with her mastery of Tai Chi. She is the former U.S. Women's National Champion for Tai Chi as well as the former Working Mother Magazine's Working Mother of the Year. Shirley's career in finance flourished as she discovered that Tai Chi was her secret weapon in managing workplace stress and achieving success in senior leadership positions. Taking over Aiping Tai Chi in 2017, she has transformed it into an internationally recognized brand, reaching all seven continents including Antarctica. As the driving force behind the @aipingtaichi social platform, Shirley has cultivated one of the fastest-growing internal martial arts communities on social media with over 200K followers with multiple videos reaching 1-2 million+ views. She has been featured in the New York Times, Well + Good, cover page of Connecticut Post, Good Morning CT, and News 8 CT to name a few. In recognition of her influence, New Haven Business Magazine included Shirley Chock in their esteemed Power 25 Class of 2023, acknowledging her as one of the 25 most influential individuals in the New Haven, CT region.   Podcast Episode Synopsis: From Finance to Flow: Shirley Chock Shares the Secret Scroll of Tai Chi In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Shirley Chock, a remarkable individual who made a late career change and found her true calling in Tai Chi. Shirley shares her inspiring journey of transitioning from a successful finance career to becoming the owner of Aiping Tai Chi, a renowned martial arts school. Shirley's story is a testament to the power of embracing change and being open to unexpected opportunities. She explains how her passion for Chinese martial arts grew alongside her finance career, eventually leading her to become a student and chosen successor of a renowned martial arts master. When her master decided to move to Austin, Shirley faced a pivotal decision: should she let someone else buy the school or continue the legacy herself? She chose the latter, realizing the value and impact Tai Chi had on her life and the potential it had to help others (listen in to learn about the "secret scroll" and how it can apply to you). Throughout the episode, Shirley highlights the philosophy and mindset behind Tai Chi, emphasizing the importance of finding balance and harmony in all aspects of life. She explains how Tai Chi teaches us to navigate change, deal with conflict, and redirect force by yielding and moving in a different direction. These principles can be applied to our careers, relationships, and personal growth, allowing us to find our center and stay resilient in the face of challenges. Shirley also discusses the power of intention and action, urging listeners to align their intentions with their actions to achieve their goals. She encourages women to trust their intuition, embrace their unique strengths, and believe in their ability to make a valuable contribution to the world. As the episode comes to a close, Shirley shares practical advice for setting realistic goals and overcoming self-doubt. She reminds us that limits only exist in our minds and that we have the power to spark our internal power by aligning our mind, breath, body, and intention. Listeners are invited to connect with Shirley on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, where she shares valuable content and insights on Tai Chi and personal growth.  You can find her here: aipingtaichi.com instagram.com/aipingtaichi tiktok.com/@aipingtaichi youtube.com/@aipingtaichi   Overall, this episode serves as a powerful reminder that change is inevitable, and by embracing it and finding balance within ourselves, we can unlock our true potential and live a more fulfilling life.

(Recorded on January 24, 2022)About Michael:Michael is the lead instructor at Wing Chun Connect. Ever since becoming captivated by martial arts movies in his youth, he has always been driven to move more efficiently, fluidly, and artfully. In 2008, he moved to Taipei to dedicate himself to training full time in Wing Chun Kung Fu and Taijiquan with world-class martial artists.Michael completed his 8-year tutelage under Master Lo Man Kam, Ip Man's nephew, learning the complete wooden dummy set (木人樁), six and a half point pole (六點半棍), eight slashing knives (八斬刀), and the 3 empty hand forms of the lineage. During this time, Michael concurrently studied the soft and supple art of Taijiquan with Master Wu Rong Hui, gaining a deeper understanding of the internal arts and the teachings of ancient Chinese wisdom. Through his formal training, seasonal research trips to schools in Hong Kong and the USA, as well as the camaraderie and mentorship of a network of respected colleagues in his kung fu family, Michael has developed his unique philosophy of Chinese martial arts into a way of life which integrates traditional wisdom and persistent innovation. He teaches with the vision that although studying martial arts begins with physical cultivation, it is a perfect medium to cultivate the mindset, habits, and heart to be successful at any worthwhile endeavor, leading to a balanced life and well-rounded character.Episode Resources:WebsiteIGFBThe Art of Learning

[Timestamp 1:57]Why MIT?In spite of having a terrible math teacher for three years, he managed to get into an Advanced Math class so that he could qualify to take the physics class he wanted to. Because of his love for Physics, going to MIT seemed like an obvious choice. [Timestamp 3:05]What happened when Joseph went to MIT?Nothing he did at MIT appealed to him. What he learned was either too theoretical or too hands-on and it bored him. [Timestamp 5:09]What made him decide to drop out of MIT?He was among the 30-40% of students that failed and if he wanted to continue going to MIT, he had to switch majors. So he switched over to management. Going to school became so depressing he slept through his finals. That combined with the financial stress made him decide to drop out. [Timestamp 6:01]Next steps?According to him, he “bounced around” a lot. For a while, he worked at a comic book store. Then when one of his fraternity brothers reached out to him about starting a T-shirt screen-printing company, he helped with running the business. Eventually, he was doing all the customer service. In time though, he grew to hate the redundancy. Living shut out from the world wasn't for him. [Timestamp 9:21]How did he get into the personal training industry? He was working out and had lost a lot of his college weight. While taking dance lessons in a salsa class, he was introduced to a Chinese Martial Arts teacher. He started training with him and a few months in, he suggested Joseph become a personal trainer. [Timestamp 12:28]How did personal training start off? After conducting his first training session, he was encircled by several veteran trainers, curious to know how long he had been training people. They were appalled to learn that they had just witnessed his first session, they thought he was doing so for years. [Timestamp 13:54]How did dancing and martial arts help his personal training career?Dancing and Martial Arts taught him how to stack skills. Before moving on to a new technique, one had to master a prerequisite basic. That gave him a significant advantage over other trainers as he was able to discern when the person he was training had reached their limit. He created a safe environment for his trainees by ensuring they had mastered the basic movement techniques before moving on to another. [Timestamp 16:47]If you like working out, does that mean you can become a personal trainer?Joseph feels that people that like to work out and decide to become personal trainers for that reason are lazy. Being a good personal trainer is a job, like any other, that requires professionalism. Working at Crunch taught him how to work with people and be professional. [Timestamp 20:14]What certifications are required to become a personal trainer?Organizations like ACE or NASM are governing bodies that offer certification courses. To Joseph, many of these are worthless. To him, it's more important how a personal trainer looks at the human body and the neurological implications that go with it. [Timestamp 21:25]How much does Personal training pay?At one establishment he worked, personal trainers got paid between $26-$55 per session. [Timestamp 26:27]What did he do after leaving Crunch? With intentions to help a friend open a new gym, he left Crunch. Unfortunately, a problem came up with the real estate company and Joseph found himself bouncing between gyms trying to figure out where he'd offer his training. [Timestamp 31:24]How did he injure his hip?During a sparring session, he blew out his hip. He spent the following year in constant pain, to the point he couldn't sleep. He put on weight and was irritable. He even lost some clients as a result. He saw eight different specialists, even a Shaman, but none helped. [Timestamp 32:38]How did he get relief? He met a trainer, Michael Zhao,  through a mutual friend and they all got together. He watched as his best friend was being trained. He'd never seen anyone train like that before. In between clients, Joseph asked Mike to do the same thing with him. After assessing him on a massage table, Mike guided him through an exercise on the floor. After he got up and walked, his pain was gone. [Timestamp 34:12]What was going on?Perplexed Joseph asked what just happened. Mike smiled and just said “Neuroscience, do you feel better?” Joseph asked Mike to teach him. He dumped a heavy book called Principles of Neuroscience into Joseph's lap. Every two weeks, he gave Joseph a new book to read. He went down a rabbit hole of cognitive neuroscience, motor control, the memory system, osteokinematics, emotional regulation, psychoanalysis. No stone was left unturned.[Timestamp 36:25]How did he transition into this new field within the fitness industry?Applying these new principles with his client was challenging. The warm-up sessions, called resets could take anywhere from 15-45 minutes because the trainee had to get their bodies in a certain position, feel certain muscles working, and then coordinate that with their breathing. It was mentally taxing. Some clients got pissed off because they spent so much time doing the resets and didn't get any time to actually work out. [Timestamp 40:12]Mistakes personal trainers make? The inability to “hold space” for someone having an emotional breakdown. Saying things like, “Hey don't worry about it. It's no big deal” isn't supportive. It's more damaging. It's not about language, not about learning what to do, or how to say the right things. It's about resolving your internal issues first so that you can create a safe environment for others. [Timestamp 44:53]Tips for those that are working from home and/or staring at a screen all-dayGet up and lie down in a dark room for 3-5 minutes and don't allow light to enter your field of vision. Staring at a computer all day fires up your visual system too much and automatically fires up muscles in your neck and upper back. It's not just about posture.
