New! Send us voice or textJonathan and Redge return to the land of dinosaurs to compete in the Mini Golf Masters with their Maiasaura friend, Minh. If they can win the Quotatious Period's biggest golf tournament, the grand prize means Minh can be the first dinosaur to go to space camp. Hello to you listening in Grants Pass, Oregon! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Once upon a time there was a young girl who lived with her wicked stepmother and wicked stepsister. One day the girl went to the well to fetch water. While there an old crone asked her for a drink of the cold water she was drawing up from the well. The girl gave her a drink and as a reward for her kindness the crone said, “Each time you speak pearls, jewels and roses will fall from your lips.” Seeing this magic the wicked stepmother sent the wicked stepsister to the well to claim her own reward. At the well a beautiful princess asks for water; but the wicked stepsister says, “Draw your own water! I'm not your servant.” “Ah,” said the princess, “That is unfortunate. From this day forward scorpions, lizards and toads will fall from your lips when you speak.” Click HERE to learn more Story Prompt: What if we could see our words even before we spoke them? How might we practice kindness and loving speech? Write that story and share it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" It's a totemic film for Jamie, who has been working on her Katharine Hepburn impression since childhood. But truly, how many times can someone say "You old poop!" with a straight face? We (attempt) to keep a tally. For Norman and Ethel Thayer, this summer on golden pond is filled with conflict and resolution. When their daughter Chelsea arrives, the family is forced to renew the bonds of love and overcome the generational friction that has existed for years. (Sourced from Letterboxd). Over in the Pop Corner, (the Poop Corner??) we talk about: Bitter Karella's Moonflow, Francesca de Tores' Saltblood, the Godzilla-themed short films Coming Out and Gigi, the Joker as trans icon, a brand new Georges Méliès short film??, Blue Moon, the YouTube channel Musora, Bad Bunny at the Superbowl, a new Lana Del Rey single and of course Wuthering Heights after our much-hyped fundraiser viewing. If you're listening to this and you didn't see Once Upon A Time in Homowood, sorry to say you missed out – but you still have time to catch Matt's other Fringe show, Tolerance which is on this week!
Hello to you listening in Pasadena, California! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. I've been binge-watching The Big Bang Theory TV series as I do this time each year to humor me through our Pacific Northwest November to May Rain Festival. As you might know a consistent theme is the characters' devotion to comics and superheroes. Why? The characters are highly intelligent, socially awkward nerds who have difficulty navigating society whereas the superheroes possess save-the-day abilities, rare powers, and bravery. Comics can be a safe place to fantasize living idealized versions of themselves as the nerd-turned-hero. But what do the Superheroes have to say about living life as a Superhero? Following are 7 quotes: 1. “When you decide not to be afraid you can find friends in super unexpected places.” — Ms. Marvel 2. “Everybody's story begins “once upon a time,” and it's up to us to cherish the time we're given to ensure we live happily ever after.” — Scarlet Witch 3. “I have no idea where I'm going to be tomorrow but I accept the fact that tomorrow will come and I'm going to rise to meet it.” — Donna Troy 4. “The fate of your planet rests not in the hands of gods. It rests in the hands of mortals.” — Thor 5. “The future is worth it. All the pain. All the tears. The future is worth the fight.” — Martian Manhunter 6. “The door is more than it appears. It separates who you are from who you can be. You do not have to walk through it… You can run.” — Franklin Richards 7. “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulders to let him know the world hasn't ended.” — Batman Story Prompt: For a long time your character has felt that she is more than she appears to be but does not believe she has what it takes to show up fully in her power until one day a door appears in a wall and she .... write that story and share it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Since landing the role of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in the new FX series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, actress Sarah Pidgeon has had to undergo a full transformation. Not only did she dye her dark brown hair blonde (which she says is here to stay, at least for now!), but she also worked with a movement coach to nail down CBK's mannerisms. “I was really focused on my eyes and I was thinking about taking all this information from these books and interviews that I had sort of gathered,” Pidgeon told Chloe Wednesday afternoon in Vogue's podcast studio. With less than a minute of recorded video of Carolyn to work off of, Sarah found that listening to Elizabeth Beller's book Once Upon A Time on repeat was the best way to prepare. Beyond her transformation, Sarah discussed her strategy for red carpet dressing, telling the story behind her feather dress and pant look she work to the show's premiere. And she dives into all of the clothes she actually was able to steal from set!Earlier in the show, Chioma tells Choe how the Gisele Pelicot digital cover story came to be. She also runs through her London Fashion Week schedule (with Tolu Coker and Chopova Lowena as two highlights) and Chloe discusses how she came up with her new newsletter Malle Wear. Saltburn — it's the dumb person's idea of a smart movie. Luckily we're all dummies and we are ready to LICK this salt. Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family's sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten. (Sourced from Letterboxd). Pop corner kernels include: the Trans Theatre festival in Melbourne, the Lord of the Rings trilogy up on the big screen, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent and Hamnet. We also share some thoughts on the Oscar nominations and take a long diversion into how tall various movie stars are. If you liked this taste of Fennell and want a little more in your life, come along to our fundraiser screening of "Wuthering Heights" on February 12th! Tickets available here. We're fundraising for Once Upon A Time in Homowood, our show in this year's NZ Fringe. Tickets are on sale for our 17 - 21 February season right now. See you there xx
Dawson having shown up in Boston as none of us particularly wanted him to, he's had a delightful weekend (offscreen) with Joey. That all changes on his last day when he finally thinks to call his USC dorm room for the one and only message on his answering machine: the one Joey left, while drunk at a frat party, telling him that SHE. Is OVER. HIM. Or something like that. Suddenly, Dawson is incensed, so it's a good thing Joey has an administrative task to handle: it's the last day she can drop Professor Wilder's Creative Writing class, so she's going to be standing in an hours-long line while Dawson has Audrey give him the campus tour and listen to his bitching about his lonely loser life in Los Angeles. (Which we already had a glimpse of with that nearly empty answering machine.) Pacey turns out not to be a lonely loser on the yacht: he's seeing a rich girl named Melanie (future House and Once Upon A Time star Jennifer Morrison!), this summer's boat babe, and this one will even sleep with him. Pacey has just blown off a job hookup Doug arranged for him with his chef friend when Melanie casually picks up their lunch check at a fine dining establishment, because Pacey is unemployed. But the Pacey who loves taking care of people can't let THAT stand. Maybe working for Doug's friend won't be so bad! After days of fruitless wandering, Jen chances back upon Charlie during his show at the campus radio station. Tiresome flirting over 80s music and feminist literature leads them straight into bed -- oldest story in the world. Don't go anywhere: you've found our episode on "The Lost Weekend"! By 1985, Simple Minds were coming off a #1 album in the UK with Sparkle in the Rain and sales from all around the world. But it only went to #64 in the US and they needed something to spark greater interest across the pond. When Don't You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club Soundtrack hit #1 in May 1985, a song they originally resisted, they had that spark and built on that success with memorable performance at Live Aid in Philadelphia. Their next album would need to be special to keep the momentum building. New York producer Jimmy Iovine (Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty) came to London to work with the boys as they welcomed in new bass player John Giblin. He encourage Jim to emote more - to really sing his heart out - in the studio and his soul is captured on Once Upon A Time. Jim's lyrics are optimistic about the future - the native Glaswegians know where they come from (Oh Jungleland) and can be proud of what they've accomplished (Come a Long Way). Alive and Kicking would be the first single to follow up #1 smash Don't You Forget About Me and soared up the charts, thanks in part to a music video shot in the Pocono Mountains - former Simple Minds drummer Mel Gaynor enlightens us with a funny story from that video shoot! They can get political without getting preachy (Ghostdancing) while bringing you to your feet with glorious salvation (Sanctify Yourself). Released October 21, 1985, Once Upon A Time would be the 2nd consecutive #1 in the UK and the 1st gold record for the band in the US. But what if they put Don't You Forget About Me on it? It was already a #1 and hadn't been on a Simple Minds album. The Wolf believes it would have resulted in millions of more sales and fans for the band in the US but that's a debate you'll have to hear! This week, Tommy is joined by the brilliant actress Lana Parrilla, who you know and love from playing some powerful women throughout her impressive career, including one of my favorites, the Evil Queen in Once Upon a Time. Lana is showing the world once again that she is a force to be reckoned with in her new series, The Rainmaker, which is out right now. Today, Lana opens up about playing a brassy and ballsy character like Bruiser in her new series, why she most relates to this character from her entire body of work, the powerful life lesson she learned through her audition process, what the challenges of living and working in a different country for six months are like, what she does to create a “home” wherever she lives for work, the Ireland dance parties that went down, if she really would do a Once Upon a Time reboot of some sort, the last time she watched Once, how playing The Evil Queen healed relationships in her personal life, the scenes of hers that she would show a Once Upon a Time newbie if they only had a few minutes, which character of hers she would want to be neighbors with, what’s on her Bruiser playlist, what character she would want to revisit, the advice she would give to her future self, what she has never said before (to a special someone), and so much more. They delve into the films origins, as well as the career of writer/director/editor/sometimes musician Robert Rodriguez. To get there, they need to discuss his ground breaking debut, El Mariachi and the third installment of the trilogy, Once Upon A Time in Mexico. This is the final episode of the BFG Podcast. We're as sad to see it go as you are, but editor and host Neal Pollack has a new job at the U.S. edition of The Spectator, the world's oldest magazine, and will no longer be seeing and talking about movies for a living. We had an extraordinary four years on the podcast, bringing you news and commentary nearly every week on a shoestring budget, but it's time to end our amazing little show.Neal welcomes his one and only guest this week, film critic Stephen Garrett, to discuss two new films and a bunch of older ones. First up, Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme, which both Neal and Stephen agree stands above the usual fare that Anderson has been producing in recent years. That has a less to do with Anderson's endlessly arch visual style and more to do with emotional and fun performances from the film's three leads, Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, and Michael Cera. There's also a fun basketball segment in the middle, and a poignant ending that makes this feel more like a movie and less like an art-school experiment. There's nothing particularly art-school about Ballerina, a side-sequel of sorts to the John Wick saga. Stephen and Neal both were able to see past the self-seriousness of John Wick and Wick-adjacent movies to see the slapstick heart at the film's center. There's an extended flamethrower battle toward the end that is one of the zaniest action sequences ever put to film. And Ana de Armas, while about the size of a peanut, has enough movie-star charm to hold it all together. Plus, there's an extended Keanu Reeves cameo. This is pretty fun. Finally, Neal and Stephen reconsider the hundreds of movies they've reviewed since 2018, when Neal took over the reigns. Mostly, they focus on the five-star movies, films that are good, but that reviewers reacted to in a personal way. They argue extensively about Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood, which Neal likes way more than Stephen, and First Man and Ad Astra, which Stephen likes way more than Neal. If you can take any one thing away from Neal Pollack's tenure at BFG, it's that he doesn't like movies where astronauts cry. Astronauts should never cry. They are in space. It is their dream. That's all from us at the BFG podcast. Thank you so much for listening over the years, and enjoy our final episode!

Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series! Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave. And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way. During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic. Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!Once Upon A Time, the edgy director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later decided to make a different type of movie....a FAMILY movie. :) It's a touching story about a recently widowed father (James Nesbitt) who moves his two young sons to the suburbs....when one day, his youngest son Damian (Alex Etel) suddenly discovers in their backyard.....a bag filled with cash! A LOT of cash no doubt so Damian and his brother (Lewis McGibbon) embark on their own adventure trying to figure out EXACTLY what to do this with this new-found fortune....and what results is a delightful whimsical story involving (among many different things) the transition to the Euro, Mormon neighbors who can transport a LOT of appliances via bicycle, and one of our heroes getting to know all of the most well-known Catholic saints. It's a true original. As we talk plot and marvel at this animated classic, we also ask the hard questions: Did inhaling a bar of soap kill Dopey? Is Grumpy just a misogynist? What kind of message does this movie send to girls and women... and to men too?
