In this month's update episode we're chatting all about Midsummer - which is not the same thing as the Summer Solstice...After chewing through some key ideas to do with "Litha" from across different cultures, including the significance of St John's Eve and Day and the hunting of the mythical Fern Flower at the solar maximum, we share a bunch of our news and the opening chunks of May's two Patreon Exclusive episodes.First comes the opening 25 minutes of our special episode about The History and Folklore of Cosmetics, which is followed by the first part of our Film Club episode all about Ben Wheatley's 2013 Civil War-set psychotropic drama A Field in England. We really hope you enjoy this tasting menu and selection of Three Ravens bits and pieces, and lo, your cup floweth over, as today has ended up being a Double Release Day - Magus #11 about the magical life of the wizard Merlin is also out right now, so hope to speak to you on that one, too!Three Ravens is a Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on a historic county, exploring the heritage, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastREGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. Our latest guest is Kristin Scott Thomas, who joined Edith in front of an audience for our Soundtracking Film Club at Everyman Whiteley's to discuss her new film My Mother's Wedding - which she has co-written and directed, and also stars in. This is the first of our events in partnership with Range Rover, a brand synonymous with mastery in all its forms, championing those who push boundaries, define standards and create enduring impact. Both Soundtracking and Everyman align naturally with Range Rover's core principles relating to leadership, cultural authority and creative excellence, so we're absolutely thrilled they have chosen to support our podcast, which was recorded live in front of an audience following a screening of Kristin's film.
We envision that many of you enjoy this podcast on a Friday or Saturday morning each week with a cup of their favourite hot, caffeinated beverage in hand to enjoy during your listen, so this week's guest fits the bill perfectly!Colin Harmon, the head honcho and founder of Irish speciality coffee giant 3fe Coffee and four-time Irish Barista Champion joins Dave and Adam in studio and brings with him a line-up of coffee songs that are sure to put a pep in your step. And speaking of pep, our latest Film Club episode is live now on the NO ENCORE Patreon and boy oh boy is Andy McCarroll animated in this one – it's Fall from 2022 and Andy *certainly* feels some type of way about it, meanwhile Dave fell for its charm. Also, we get to hear the story of Andy getting grounded during his flying lesson, worth the sign-up fee alone if you ask me.Ahead, Adam returns to Album Club corner, and is very much keeping the SPOT Festival experience live by taking a deep-dive into Swash's debut album Powers of Ten released in April this year. Be sure to keep an eye for that coming on Monday to see why he keeps banging on about them.Drink up, though – coffee's getting cold and we have much to discuss.ACT ONE: You know the drill.ACT TWO (19:13): Noel Gallagher spotted out and about with his new, and much younger, partner, Harry Styles gets intimate, Metallica are out for blood (literally) and Ozzy's new avatar – it's the newsACT THREE (1:06:26): Top 5 Coffee SongsDonate to Conor Cusack's GoFundMe here. Elwood and Stephen look at the Indonesian ghost story "The Corpse Washer" as Lela is tasked with picking up her families mortuary duties when her mother mysteriously dies. But when other women in the village suffer a similar fate she begins to investigate who or what is behind their deaths.
Our latest guest on Soundtracking features as part of our Soundtracking Film Club, with writer and showrunner Neil Forsyth joined Edith at Everyman Whiteley's to discuss the Netflix drama Legends. Featuring a wonderful ensemble cast - Tom Burke, Haley Squires and Steve Coogan among them - Legends tells the based-on-truth story of a small, poorly-resourced group of customs officers who went undercover to infiltrate some of the most notorious drug-trafficking gangs in the UK.

We're rambling back into things this week after our start-of-summer sojourn, and walking into studio this week is Oliver Nolan of the Irish Film Institute to accompany us on a stroll though his five favourite songs about the wonder of the wander. That's not all the listening we have for you, though. Available on the NO ENCORE Patreon right now, you can hear Adam's 85-minute reliving of his adventure to SPOT Festival in Aarhus, Denmark. Tap in for some new Nordic discoveries, festival crowd discourse, highlights (and lowlights) and a Top 5 of the acts he saw.Forthcoming, is the return of Film Club in which the boys have yet another one of their extremely-podcastable disagreements about the movie Fall from 2022, but which of our co-hosts will be driven to the top of the proverbial tower and which one has Fall-en for the movie? You'll have to wait until Monday to find out.Onwards, we've got a ways to go!ACT ONE: The preamble, in which we have a brief catch-up and, of course, ramble – no pun intended.ACT TWO (23:32): Drake's triple-drop, Macca no longer monkeying about, Taran Egerton's Chemical curations, Aqua submerged to a permanent end and a local talent hits big in the Billboard Hot 100 – it's the news.ACT THREE (52:15): Top 5 Walking Songs. Let's kick some ice. That's a line from notorious nightmare Batman & Robin from the year 1997. Walk, don't run. Thankfully, Dave and Adam are joined this week by the much more delightful Sarah McKenna Barry; outgoing editor of GCN Magazine and expert on the kind of performing arts that make Timothée Chalamet shudder. In honour of Matt strapping on the goalie pads again for the first time in many years (and not completely pulling his groin), it only made sense to revisit the classic hockey comedy, 'Slap Shot' from 1977. This isn't the first time seeing the movie for either Julian or Matt but it's been a long time so there are plenty of questions still to answer. Here's a few examples: How well shot are the hockey scenes? Does the movie feature more or less actual hockey than 'Heated Revelry'? Does the plot and/or humour hold up all these years later? All these questions are answered in time, but we're also trying something new this month. Instead of a traditional movie review, Julian and Matt decided to go a layer deeper and add a full commentary track for the movie as well. So enjoy the full review, which takes place, before, during, and after the movie itself, and sync up your own copy of the movie (there's a countdown before we start) to get the full experience!
