It is at its core a period drama, starring Ziyi Zhang, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Andy Lau, but it also involves love, deception, loyalty, and conflict, which we talk a lot about, obviously. Patreon-lyssnare avnjuter som vanligt dubbel speltid där samtalet fortsätter om The Seeding of a Ghost och The Boxer's Omen. Det innehållet börjar vid 00:57:07. Nostalgi, blixtar, löst tyckande, dunder, akademisk analys och/eller magiska under.

Feature Film: Hey everybody, for real, rating low to frustrate each other is not a fun way to rate, because we're all on the same podcast, and that podcast is to rate movies together and make it entertaining for our audiences. And so when people rate low just to frustrate each other, and just to troll each other, there's enough of that in the world today, of people trolling each other to be mean, and to be hurtful, and if we're gonna review in the space together we need to do it because we want each other to have fun, and not because we're trying to frustrate each other, ‘cause there's enough frustrating things in the world right now, and there's enough we can't control. and one of the things we can control is that everyone's here to have fun, and not waste each other's time. and so when we make decisions that are meant to troll each other, that's something that bad people do. The first premiere of the week comes from Venezuela DJ and producer Dagga, who releases his track entitled ‘Floor Seats' with Molekül, as they re-launch their sublabel ‘Perfusion'. Hailing from Maracaibo, Venezuela, Dagga spent his younger years going to his older brother's raves, absorbing raw techno sounds and futuristic electro from labels of the time, such as Gigolo records. Dagga showcases his razor-sharp ability to slice and dice a variety of flavours like electro, funk carioca, breaks and techno with perfect precision. In 2020 he released his first EP, House of Flying Daggers, on Jensen Interceptor's ‘International Chrome'. A very well received album to this date, it combines classic electro and ghetto tech, inspired by the early days of dopplerefekt and D.I.E. ‘Floor Seats' is laced with energetic stabs and vocals, thunderous low end and pulsating basslines throughout. All of this together results in a rich production that would satiate any electro, ghetto or techno fan in search of a rich, unique and exciting sound that is fit for the dancefloor. Film writers Hanna Flint (Fade to Black podcast, The First Film Club) and Leila Latif (Little White Lies, Curzon, Total Film) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Hannah's choice Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a 2000 wuxia (the adventures of martial artists in ancient China) film. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun-fat as Li Mu Bai, Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien and Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu. Li Mu Bai, a warrior, asks Yu Shu Lien, the woman he loves, to pass on his sword, Green Destiny, to Sir Te. However, when the sword is stolen, Li embarks on a mission to find it. It broke records for its box office gross for a foreign-language film and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film. The highest ever for a non-English language film, until it was equaled by Roma in 2018. The film gave a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films and led the way for films such as House of Flying Daggers and Hero having success with Western audiences. Unsurprisingly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon scores highly from Flixwatcher and guests - with a very, very strong recommendability rating. Slightly lower scores for small screen give an overall rating of 4.39   [supsystic-tables id=268] Episode #256 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #256 Crew of Leila Latif (@Leila_Latif) and Hanna Ines Flint (@HannaFlint) from first_filmclub Find their Websites online at https://www.leilalatif.com/ and at https://twitter.com/artsemergency and at https://twitter.com/thegoodagencyuk and at https://twitter.com/first_filmclub and at https://twitter.com/fadetoblackpod and at https://www.flintonfilm.com/ Please make sure you give them some love   More about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon For more info on Never Rarely Sometimes Always, you can visit Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon IMDb page here or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Rotten Tomatoes page here. On this episode of Why Watch That:Featuring reviews of the following films at 2021's Toronto International Film Festival:SundownTim Roth stars in writer-director Michel Franco's chilling drama about a wealthy Briton attempting to abandon his life while vacationing in Acapulco. From the outside, it would appear that Neil Bennett (Tim Roth, also at the Festival with Bergman Island), a wealthy Briton vacationing with loved ones at a luxury resort in Acapulco, wants for nothing. Until, that is, a single phone call shatters Neil's idyll: there's been a death in the family, and he, his sister Allison (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and the kids must return to London immediately. At the airport, just before their flight is to depart, Neil pretends to have forgotten his passport at the resort. He insists the others go ahead; he'll catch the next flight. Instead, Neil checks into a budget hotel, drinks beer at the beach, meets a beautiful local named Berenice (Iazua Larios), and begins concocting reasons to delay his return home. What is Neil up to? How long can he linger abroad while his family grieves and contends with legal matters? And what if things go from bad to worse? The story of writer-director Michel Franco's Sundown seems simple, but its twists are riveting and its mysteries rich. As with Franco's Un Certain Regard–winning After Lucia or his TIFF selections April's Daughter and New Order, Sundown is an incisive study of class disparity and familial strife. Roth, who worked with Franco previously on Chronic, is brilliantly cast as the film's enigmatic antihero. His performance is one of immense containment, hinting incrementally at the profound ennui driving Neil to attempt to abandon his enviable life. There is something almost palpably haunted about Neil, and, as he makes his way along this strange journey, his desperate longing will resonate more than you'd expect. -DIANA SANCHEZMexico, 2021Spanish, English84 minutesDirectorMichel FrancoCastTim Roth, Iazua Larios, Charlotte GainsbourgScreenplayMichel Franco7 Prisoners (on Netflix this November)Alexandre Moratto's sophomore film follows a young man who compromises his own sense of friendship and community to survive in an extreme situation. After the TIFF Next Wave Film Festival selection Socrates, director Alexandre Moratto and producer Fernando Meirelles return to TIFF with a compelling tale of modern-day indentured slavery in Brazil.7 Prisoners follows a group of honest men from the countryside who think they are going to São Paulo for work but end up locked in a junkyard, where they are told they must work to pay off steep debts. The place functions like a prison; they are surveilled at gunpoint and their loved ones are threatened. One of the men, Mateus, tries to make a deal with the owner, Luca, saying he can increase productivity if Luca agrees to release them in six months. But it's a slippery slope, and Mateus becomes the boss's assistant in order to get ahead. The heartbreaking story reflects on systemic oppression and corruption, and on how a person can compromise their own sense of friendship and community to survive in an extreme situation. It also depicts the smuggling and cruel exploitation of migrant workers. There are no winners here, as we discover that dire circumstances can make people alternately endearing and naive, or capable of physical and psychological violence. With a thriller touch and stellar performances by Rodrigo Santoro and Christian Malheiros, the film transcends the facile binary of good versus bad to create a sense of urgency about some of the world's most blatant injustices. -DESCRIPTION COURTESY OF TIFFCONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMABrazil, 2021Portuguese93 minutesDirectorAlexandre MorattoCastChristian Malheiros, Rodrigo Santoro, Bruno Rocha, Vitor Julian, Lucas Oranmian, Cecília Homem de Mello, Dirce ThomazScreenplayThayná Mantesso, Alexandre MorattoPublicistNetflixI'm Your Man (Bleecker Street will release on Friday, September 24)Maria Schrader's unlikely sci-fi rom-com explores human relationships through the inquisitive eyes of a cyborg. Starring Dan Stevens and Maren Eggert. How would you react if the perfect partner were created for you — designed to respond to your every conscious or unconscious need? For scientist Alma Felser (Maren Eggert), the reaction is instant skepticism. She is reluctant when offered a job evaluating a new line of humanoid cyborgs to determine what rights they should be granted in society. She believes it takes more than millions of data points collected from the human population to make a human being. But when research funding for her cuneiform studies at Berlin's Pergamon Museum is dangled, Alma agrees to a three-week trial with Tom (Dan Stevens), an English-accented, rumba-dancing robot who is relentlessly eager to serve one purpose: her happiness.Writer-director Maria Schrader's I'm Your Man playfully interrogates the complexities of companionship and human interactions, as reflected back in the steely gaze of a replicant. Emotions and ego are explored through a full range of relationships: romantic, familial, professional, and, most importantly, the relationship with one's self.Schrader's profound understanding of, and respect for, our internal contradictions is manifested in the relatable Alma. Conveyed with remarkable authenticity by Eggert in her Berlin Silver Bear–winning performance, the scientist's reluctant feelings about cyborg Tom evolve ever so lightly into intimacy, in spite of his direct if perfectly charming advances (powered by the bionically good-looking Stevens of Downton Abbey fame — impressive in an entirely German-language role). It must be said: there aren't many entrants in the sci-fi rom-com subgenre that wholly reflect the human condition. I'm Your Man stands apart as exemplary. -DIANA SANCHEZSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSGermany, 2021German108 minutesDirectorMaria SchraderCastMaren Eggert, Dan Stevens, Sandra Hüller, Hans Löw, Wolfgang Hübsch, Annika MeierScreenplayJan Schomburg, Maria SchraderPublicistBleecker StreetThe Good HouseSigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline play ex-flames who rekindle their romance, in this drama from directors Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky.“I need a good year.” When Hildy (Sigourney Weaver) makes that pronouncement, she's talking about her sales prospects as a realtor. But there's also an unspoken acknowledgement that her best years just might be behind her. Bold, brash, and practiced in the ways of her affluent New England town, Hildy's barely controlled chaos is a bit too familiar to her friends and family. So is its fuel: booze.Veteran screenwriters Maya Forbes (who also directed Infinitely Polar Bear) and Wallace Wolodarsky adapt and direct Ann Leary's novel as a piercing observation of a woman capable of great charm, but always ready to sabotage her own success when the mood descends. Seeing the risk escalate, her family stages an intervention. It goes about as well as expected.Weaver is a pure pleasure to watch here, perfectly pitching Hildy's captivating side as well as her more vicious moments. A woman who proudly notes that her family has lived in Wendover for almost 300 years, she carries herself with regal bearing, ready to adopt new arrival Rebecca (Morena Baccarin) as a prize. But Hildy's mass of hurts and insecurities are never far from the surface. The only person who seems to see her fully is Frank (Kevin Kline, also appearing in TIFF selection The Starling), a grizzled old flame who earned his wealth with his own hands and may now be ready to take Hildy into his arms again. Mandy Walker believes that her job as a cinematographer is not just to make pretty pictures, but to enhance an emotion with lenses, camera placement and lighting. She works on a gut and emotional level for films, getting across the feelings of the characters- a DP's arsenal of tricks should only help convey what's going on in the scene. For Mulan, Mandy and director Nikki Caro wanted to take a different approach from the Disney animated version, and were free to interpret the film as they wished. Mandy watched several Chinese action films such as House of Flying Daggers and went on location scouting trips to China to find the look and inspiration for the film. Mandy grew up in Australia and always loved photography, film and art, so she felt a passion to become a cinematographer right from the beginning. She skipped film school and began as a production assistant and loader in Australia, learning as she went on films such as Lantana, which was shot using almost only available light. Shattered Glass, which tells the true story of a journalist who made up the majority of his articles, was her first American film. Working with Baz Luhrmann on Australia was a huge jump into bigger budget movies, and she learned how to organize and delegate an entire camera department with multiple cameras. For the film Hidden Figures, Mandy worked closely with the costume designer and makeup artists to ensure that how the characters were dressed and what they looked like matched the feel of what each scene is meant to convey. She watched a lot of archival footage from NASA, some of which was used in the film, and was thrilled to meet Katherine Johnson, one of the real-life subjects of the film. Mandy Walker is currently working with director Baz Luhrmann again on a forthcoming biography film about Elvis Presley. The Cinematography Podcast Bonus Episode: Xiaoding Zhao Illya sat down with cinematographer Xiaoding Zhao and Shadow producer and translator Ellen Eliasoph at Cameraimage 2019 to discuss the film Shadow. Director Zhang Yimou and Zhao worked together to create a very distinctive color palette, wanting it to appear to be like a Chinese ink brush painting. The costumes are also all in gray or black for the same ink washed look. It also enabled the color of red blood to show bold and bright against the duller background. For Shadow, Zhang Yimou chose to make most of the action design in constant rain, which proved a huge challenge for Zhao. Getting the proper lighting was difficult, because he wanted to use a softer light on the actor's faces, but illuminating the hard contrast on a wet and dark exterior was also important. Zhao actually started off life as a professional speed skater, but got injured and couldn't continue, so he began taking photos and videos of his speed skating team. He found he really enjoyed the work and was admitted to the prestigious Beijing Film Academy. Zhao and Zhang Yimou have made 11 movies together, including the acclaimed House of Flying Daggers, for which Zhao received an Oscar Nomination in 2004. Das war 2000 in Cannes der große Überraschungs-Hit des Festivals. «Sense and Sensibility with martial arts» hatte Ang Lee versprochen und dies auch eingehalten. This was the big surprise hit of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Ang Lee had promised "Sense and Sensibility with martial arts" and came through with flying colours (and fighters). In Cannes, there were round tables with Ang Lee and the actresses Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi; in Zurich, I was subsequently granted a one-to-one conversation with Ang Lee before the film's theatrical release. Taken together, these conversations not only provide a lot of background to this great film; in addition, Ang Lee relates «Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon» to his previous work, Michelle Yeoh draws comparisons to other wuxia films and to James Bond, while Zhang Ziyi explains the differences between the directors Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou, whose films «The Road Home» (1999) and «House of Flying Daggers» (2004) starring Zhang Ziyi we hope to screen later this year.

I have been using it on a trial that ends a few days after this episode is published. I have really enjoyed my time with it and feel I have learned a lot about it and plan to purchase it for use in the show once Christmas is out of the way. This episode is probably the one I am most proud of as far as sound design goes and I hope you all agree. In lieu of the problems going on with Patreon at the moment, I am not going to be asking for support their this episode, as we may not be continuing to use the service if they follow through with their change next week. If you'd like to know more, you can read my rant about their changes in this blog post.

The School of Movies Archive

[School of Movies 2017] In another commissioned show this week we cover the 2002 Chinese blockbuster from the director of The Great Wall. Loosely (and as we find out that means REALLY loosely) based on a real life assassination attempt on the first emperor of China, this is one of Jet Li's most prestigious appearances. Featuring a trio of assassins played by Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, and the amazing Donnie Yen, this blends serious, historical drama with stunningly photographed, excellently choreographed martial arts. It's immense in scale, breathtaking in beauty and thought-provoking in story. It's also one of the Zhang Ziyi trilogy of period-set martial arts spectaculars, the other two being House of Flying Daggers by the same director as Hero, Zhang Yimou, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon directed by Ang Li. All three are absolutely worth your viewing time, especially on blu ray.

A “celebrity photographer who also photographs celebrities”, Russel Wong is one of the most profiled photographers in Singapore and Asia.  He enjoys the acclaim of being the first Singaporean to break into the notoriously difficult Hollywood movie industry, and is also among the elite photographers commissioned to photograph covers for Time magazine. From his beginnings in sports photography covering world record miler Sebastian Coe, Russel went on to carry out coveted photographic work for Nike, capturing luminaries including Carl Lewis, Mary Decker and John McEnroe.  A Fine Arts degree in Photography from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles followed, and it was then that Russel began to establish a name for himself in international fashion photography, working for the world-renown Elite Modeling Agency. His celebrity fashion spreads for the Los Angeles Times opened the door to working with top celebrities like Joan Chen, Isabella Rossellini, Oliver Stone, Paloma Picasso, Michael Jackson, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Glenn Close, David Lynch, Bruce Willis, and Jackie Chan.  In developing a signature style amidst this highly competitive culture of fashion photography, Russel strove to distinguish his work by re-defining and re-styling the images of these glamorous figures with greater depth, texture and imagination.  Supermodels, designers and musicians soon populated his portfolio – Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valetta, Kenzo, Anna Sui, Yo Yo Ma, and Luciano Pavarotti. The establishment of his photographic studio in Singapore in 1989 brought in accounts with Raffles Hotel, Singapore Airlines, Cartier, American Express, Nike, British Airways, Sony, Visa, Compaq, Four Seasons Hotel, Nokia, The Ritz Carlton Hotel, the Development Bank of Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board, Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore Telecoms and Apple.  Meanwhile, the success of his commercial work also began to draw the attention of leading publications, which all sought Russel's work to grace their covers.  These include the debut cover of Vogue Singapore, and international covers for Time, Fortune, Elle, GQ, Marie Claire, New York Times and Los Angeles Times. The allure and acclaim of Russel's work draws from his ability to infuse his commercial accounts with creative elements, combined with a sensitive, thoughtful take on his subjects.  This is clearly in the vein of the photographers he admires and appreciates – Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts.  Such balance and versatility may be seen in Russel's work photographing stories and fashion spreads for movie sets, such as Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth, and publicity shoots for Lee Ang's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Zhang Yimou's Hero and House of Flying Daggers, as well as portraits of Asian movie starts like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fatt, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi. Russel's latest work in filmmaking has also been an impactful one, having recently attended the prestigious New York University Film Program, and with plans underway for directing his first feature film.  To date, he has directed numerous award-winning commercials, from a Breast Cancer spot that earned him a CLIO award – the advertising industry's Oscar equivalent – to commercials for Discovery Channel featuring Joan Chen, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.  Also referred to as “The Richard Avedon of Asia” by many, he was recently commissioned to photograph a set of portraits for the Prime Minister of Singapore. Today, Russel's photography continues to make its mark both regionally and internationally.  In its millennium issue, a top regional magazine voted Russel as one of the Asians to look out for in the next millennium.  He is the first Singaporean photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (Russel Wong:  1980 – 2005), and also the first and only photographer to be invited for the art residency at the renowned Singapore Tyler Print Institute.  In addition, his art works can be found in public and private collections, with his “Bamboo Forest” print going for a record US$40,000 at a recent Christies auction in Hong Kong. Russel is one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show.   In the podcast, Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back!  Destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Several of Steven's guests have included:  Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett;  CNN's Richard Quest & Bill Weir; Journalist-Humorist-Actor Mo Rocca (of CBS Sunday Morning & The Cooking Channel's "My Grandmother's Ravioli" fame); Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.; as well as leading photographers, artists, writers and more.
