Angefangen bei so was wie ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 2 aka LAST HERO, BLOODSPORT oder TOM YUM GOONG aka REVENGE OF THE WARRIOR aka THE PROTECTOR oder auch WARRIOR KING über Klassisches wie A TOUCH OF ZEN aka EIN HAUCH VON ZEN bis hin zu ganz frischen Titeln wie THE FURIOUS oder TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS aka CiTY OF VIOLENCE. Ja, dieser ganze Titel-Wirrwarr ist schon manchmal eine eigene Sendung für sich wert. Deswegen schnell noch hinterher geschoben: Um THE MILLIONAIRE'S EXPRESS aka SHANGHAI POLICE – DIE WÜSTESTE TRUPPE DER WELT, RIKI-OH: THE STORY OF RICKY aka STORY OF RICKY oder CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON aka TIGER AND DRAGON wird es ebenfalls gehen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 196 Drew Kunin - Production Sound Mixer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with production sound mixer Drew Kunin (DISCLOSURE DAY; HER; CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON). Throughout the episode, Drew helps us understand how a production sound mixer might do his or her job in a number of different circumstances, drawing on experiences ranging from building a recording booth on wheels for HER to mixing CROUCHING TIGER phonetically using a pinyin script. Drew also describes the type of equipment he might use in certain situations, and he reflects on the changes in technology and in technique he's witnessed since he started his career. He later shares his approach to mixing tracks on set, and we discuss how his mixes can influence what happens in post. Drew also recounts his experience of being one of two Americans on the crew of CROUCHING TIGER in China, and he gives us a quick demonstration on the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese. We worked with Drew on THE GOLDFINCH and THE SECRET GARDEN, and we had a great time catching up with him. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we celebrate an actor with an incredible range: Chow Yun-fat. Our B-Sides include 100 Ways to Murder Your Wife, City War, Peace Hotel, and The Corruptor. We discuss Chow Yun-fat's emergence in Hong Kong, his early work with John Woo, the breakout that was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000. Conor and I debate which Western star Chow Yun-fat reminds us of, before resolving that he's quite a bit more dynamic than any one of them. There's debate over the success of his move to Hollywood and his brief stint as a Western leading man (lest we never forget about Bulletproof Monk!), the City on Fire influence on Reservoir Dogs, the John Woo Hollywood run (and why Chow wasn't in any of them!?), and the impossible influence of Asian action cinema on Hollywood action blockbusters to this day.We also discuss the difficult and narrow needle to thread when making a slapstick marital comedy, and why 100 Ways to Murder Your Wife fails where a few succeed.

"Whatever path you decide to take in this life... be true to yourself." Vintage Cinema Rewind is back with their Deep Dive on Ang Lee's award-winning wuxia masterpiece: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The battle for Jen's soul continues! After she steals off in the dead of night with the Green Destiny, Blake and Michael end up chasing her across half of China. But as Jen wreaks eighteen years of repressed rage across the countryside, can they convince her to surrender the blade and accept Blake's tutelage? Will Blake and Michael finally confess their feelings for each other? Or will yet more blood be shed before the night is up?
To repress one's feelings only makes them stronger. Well this week, Blake and Michael have a lot of feelings in need of expressing. Vintage Cinema Rewind kicks off Oscar season with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon—Ang Lee's wuxia masterpiece. Blake is an aging warrior who has decided to stop living by the blade. But when Michael attempts to deliver his sword to their feudal lord, a thief steals it from them. The assailant turns out to be a noblewoman trapped both by tradition and the resentments of her mentor. Can Blake and Michael intervene and steer her towards the light? Or will they all remain trapped in darkness? Minor correction: Ang Lee, the Director, is Taiwanese. Where to watch: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - stream online

Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), this chapter adapts Act II of the stage musical, carrying the story beyond spectacle into consequence, legacy, and the cost of choosing who you become in the land of Oz. Picking up after the fallout of Part One, the film follows Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo – Harriet, The Color Purple) as she fully embraces her identity as the Wicked Witch, fighting against a system that has turned her into a symbol of fear. Across the divide is Glinda (Ariana Grande – Don't Look Up, Victorious), now the public face of goodness, forced to reconcile privilege, power, and the painful distance growing between her and her former best friend. Their fractured bond forms the emotional core of the film, culminating in moments that redefine friendship, sacrifice, and how history chooses its heroes and villains. The supporting cast deepens Oz's moral complexity, with Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, torn between duty, love, and rebellion; Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as the manipulative Madame Morrible; and Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, Thor: Ragnarok) as The Wizard, whose charm masks devastating political cruelty. Returning roles include Ethan Slater (SpongeBob SquarePants on Broadway) as Boq and Marissa Bode as Nessarose, whose storyline becomes one of the film's darkest and most consequential threads. 1999's The Corruptor was the second attempt by an American film studio to make an international star out of Chow Yun Fat. The Replacement Killers a year before with Mira Sorvino failed to thrill audiences and The Corruptor, about a New York Chinatown war between two rival gangs, didn't exactly make waves. Ironically, it took a Tiawanese filmmaker, Ang Lee, to bring Fat world recognition a year later with hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Dan and Vicky discuss the Mark Wahlberg co-starring buddy cop actioner along with some political talk and lots of recently seen including The Conjuring: Last Rites, The Long Walk, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and the plays Gene and Gilda and Blood Orange. On episode 273 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Jay Ledbetter and Josh Parham to go back 25 years and take a look at the 73rd Academy Awards, covering the films of 2000. The state of the new millennium say the Oscar get nostalgic as Ridley Scott's swords and sandals epic, Gladiator, took home the top prize of the night, alongside Best Actor and a couple wins in the technical categories. A giant hit from the summer, the film took down an international film sensation in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, two films from Steven Soderbergh in Traffic and Erin Brockovich, and the sleeper, delightful indie film Chocolat. Overall, it was a descent list of nominees and winners that represented a shift from the indie films that dominated the 1990s, and the more populist films that would become winners in the early 2000s. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2000, briefly discuss talk about Gladiator as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h14m. We will be back next week for a recap the winners from Critics Choice, DGA and PGA as the Oscar race starts to narrow before final winner voting begins. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Big news in the acting categories as Demi Moore and Isabella Rossellini land their first-ever nominations, while Karla Sofía Gascón makes history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for Best Actress. This month, I was pleased to welcome back Dan Mecca & Conor O'Donnell, two friends & the hosts of The Film Stage's excellent podcast The B-Side, which covers movie stars in a fascinating way, by focusing not on the films that made or kept them famous but on the ones that actors made in between. Equally skilled at coming up with highly original show themes for their guest appearances here, Dan & Conor joined me in Season 4 to discuss the role of work in the films of director Ron Howard & in 2022, we focused on the transition that gifted crew members such as Jack Fisk & Douglas Trumbull made to the position of director. This season, they're back to celebrate the '90s to early aught renaissance of old-fashioned Errol Flynn-style swashbuckler pictures. Charting the resurgence in genre popularity after the surprise success of ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES (& the Bryan Adams theme song), Dan & Conor walk listeners through the changes '90s filmmakers made from not only the '20s & '30s but also the sword spectaculars of their more fantastical '80s counterparts. Focusing primarily on the films FIRST KNIGHT, THE MASK OF ZORRO, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, & PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, we dissect the style, actors, productions, & filmmakers of these films & others in this same genre or old-fashioned adventure epic mold from A KNIGHT'S TALE to THE MUMMY to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON & beyond. Along the way, we coin a new catchphrase in "buckle some swash," I tell a story about a dude I went out with once who didn't realize that Keith Richards & Mick Jagger were two different people, & we go on several memorable tangents. It's a delightfully spirited feature-length chat that's fun for all... who are all for fun. Dan & Conor's Bio: A producer & filmmaker living in Pittsburgh, Dan Mecca started The Film Stage with Jordan Raup in college at Buffalo & Conor O'Donnell is a post-production supervisor based in New York City & also serves as a critic for The Film Stage.
