1999's The Corruptor was the second attempt by an American film studio to make an international star out of Chow Yun Fat.  The Replacement Killers a year before with Mira Sorvino failed to thrill audiences and The Corruptor, about a New York Chinatown war between two rival gangs, didn't exactly make waves.  Ironically, it took a Tiawanese filmmaker, Ang Lee, to bring Fat world recognition a year later with hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.   Dan and Vicky discuss the Mark Wahlberg co-starring buddy cop actioner along with some political talk and lots of recently seen including The Conjuring: Last Rites, The Long Walk, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and the plays Gene and Gilda and Blood Orange.   Our socials:  hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast Twitter: @HotDate726 Insta:  hotdatepod

China's animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 continues to make waves at the international box office, with its massive earnings in Australia and New Zealand further boosting its success in Oceania. The fantasy adventure film rose to second place in New Zealand's weekend total box office list by Sunday, according to the country's industry tracker Numero. In Australia, the film took third spot with at least A$1,504,128 ($948,879) in takings from the weekend. James Curtis, an undergraduate student in Sydney who had watched the film, said he was impressed by its storyline and animation. I can understand why local and foreign moviegoers crowded the cinema for this," said the 20-year-old. "I do want to know more about these aspects of Chinese culture. It definitely helps build better understanding across our peoples." Ne Zha 2, the sequel to the 2019 animation based on the eponymous childlike Chinese folk deity, recorded its second straight weekend as the third-highest-grossing feature in Australian cinemas, reaping more than A$5.2 million in the country, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Its first weekend per-screen average of A$25,000 is "the best of any film this year", putting Ne Zha 2 on track to surpass the $1.9 billion mark globally in its second week, the newspaper said. The University of Adelaide communication and media studies researcher Hong Yanyan told China Daily that the film "breathes fresh life into traditional Chinese mythology and philosophy in a way that feels both modern and rooted" in Chinese culture. What made the film truly take off was simple: it delivered a solid, entertaining story with even more advanced and breathtaking visuals than Ne Zha, the first film in the series."“这部电影真正起飞的原因很简单:它讲述了一个扎实、有趣的故事,视觉效果比《哪吒》电影第一部更加先进和令人惊叹。”"The box office success of Ne Zha 2 shows that audiences, both Chinese and non-Chinese, are open to stories that reflect different cultural perspectives," Hong said. It's not just about nostalgia or national pride; it's about storytelling that feels universal while staying true to its roots."“这不仅仅关乎怀旧或民族自豪感;而是关于故事叙述,既要具有普遍意义,又要保持自身的根源。”She added that social media and streaming services have also played a significant role in increasing the film's impact. Word-of-mouth spreads fast, and when a film like Ne Zha 2 gains traction, it doesn't just stay within Chinese-speaking communities, it reaches global audiences through fan discussions, reviews and digital platforms," Hong said. This is an exciting time for Chinese animation and storytelling in general. As long as filmmakers continue to innovate while staying authentic to their cultural heritage, I think we'll see more and more Chinese stories making an impact worldwide," she added. Ne Zha 2 was officially released in four Oceania countries, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea, on Feb 13.2月13日,《哪吒2》正式在澳大利亚、新西兰、斐济、巴布亚新几内亚四个大洋洲国家上映。The Chinese embassy in Fiji held an event for audiences to view the film on Feb 22, amid celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji.2月22日,中国驻斐济使馆举办庆祝中斐建交50周年活动,组织了《哪吒2》观影活动。Nearly 400 people, including local and Chinese officials, politicians, diplomats, overseas Chinese and Fijian citizens attended the event, according to an embassy statement. Audiences "lauded the film for its captivating traditional Chinese aesthetics, profound cultural connotations…the world-class special effects were also highly commended", it said. China's ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, said in a speech that Ne Zha 2 brings "a visual feast of Chinese traditional culture to the world". As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, we hope that the two countries will carry forward Ne Zha's spirit of bravery and hard work to create a bright future for China-Fiji relationship," he added.“今年是中斐建交50周年,希望两国能像电影中的哪吒一样,发扬勇敢拼搏精神,共创中斐关系美好未来,”他补充道。A diplomat from the embassy in Fiji told China Daily that impressed audiences remained glued to the screen for the post-credit scene of the film. The embassy is also set to host a Chinese film week later this year as part of the anniversary celebrations. Zhi Feina, a professor at the Chinese National Academy of Arts, said that Ne Zha 2, which has been released overseas in subtitled versions, has not reached many foreign moviegoers who are more accustomed to watching films with English dubs. Compared to director Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and director Zhang Yimou's Hero, the top-grossing Chinese films in North America, Ne Zha 2's cultural backdrop, involving knowledge of Taoism, may pose a challenge in engaging more foreign moviegoers. Lynn Wu, a 43-year-old Chinese immigrant in Brisbane, recalled that she accompanied her two children to watch Ne Zha 2 in the opening week but found that it had limited screenings in nearby cinemas. We hope such an excellent Chinese film could have more promotions so that more locals could know about the movie," she said. nostalgian.

On episode 273 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Jay Ledbetter and Josh Parham to go back 25 years and take a look at the 73rd Academy Awards, covering the films of 2000. The state of the new millennium say the Oscar get nostalgic as Ridley Scott's swords and sandals epic, Gladiator, took home the top prize of the night, alongside Best Actor and a couple wins in the technical categories. A giant hit from the summer, the film took down an international film sensation in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, two films from Steven Soderbergh in Traffic and Erin Brockovich, and the sleeper, delightful indie film Chocolat. Overall, it was a descent list of nominees and winners that represented a shift from the indie films that dominated the 1990s, and the more populist films that would become winners in the early 2000s. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2000, briefly discuss talk about Gladiator as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h14m. We will be back next week for a recap the winners from Critics Choice, DGA and PGA as the Oscar race starts to narrow before final winner voting begins. Till then, let's get into it. Permanent exclusion rates of primary-age pupils have also gone up, by almost 70% in the same period. Campaigners say children excluded from school at a young age experience long-term impacts. It's worth also stating that nearly 90% of those permanently excluded over the past five years also had special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The government has acknowledged the situation is at "crisis point", and says it is determined to "drive up standards" in schools. Anita Rani spoke to Lydia, whose son Eddie has been suspended from school 14 times this year.Twenty-four year old product design and technology graduate Olivia Humphreys is a Global Medical Winner of the James Dyson Award 2024. This week, as Gladiator II hits the theaters to repeat the same beats of its predecessor and prove that what we do in life truly does echo in eternity, we circle back to the original to cross a movie off of Hayley's list and get her hyped to see some hunks on the IMAX screen. It's 2000's Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Tommy Flanagan and Spencer Treat Clark. A somewhat controversial Best Picture winner at the time, it has remained one of Scott's most celebrated pictures despite hardly being his best. While it may not match the heights of his sci-fi output, it is unquestionably the high-water mark of his Medieval Mode, very much in line with subsequent efforts like Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood and The Last Duel, and is still a hugely entertaining sword-and-sandal revenge epic that lifted its two lead actors to another level of stardom. Plus: We get pissed off about the Coca-Cola AI Christmas commercial. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, Gladiator is currently streaming (in Canada at least) on both Netflix and Paramount+ at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Past Lives, Stop Making Sense, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Aliens, In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The X-Files (S5E04 "Detour"), Good Bones, Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Holdovers, The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Red One, The Brave Little Toaster, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Shadow of the Vampire and Crash, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up No-Theme-ber with our monthly canon consideration, as Hayley's got the keys to the vault this month and is using them to induct the Coen Brothers' 2007 crime classic No Country For Old Men, which is currently streaming north of the border on both Netflix and Amazon Prime. This month, I was pleased to welcome back Dan Mecca & Conor O'Donnell, two friends & the hosts of The Film Stage's excellent podcast The B-Side, which covers movie stars in a fascinating way, by focusing not on the films that made or kept them famous but on the ones that actors made in between. Equally skilled at coming up with highly original show themes for their guest appearances here, Dan & Conor joined me in Season 4 to discuss the role of work in the films of director Ron Howard & in 2022, we focused on the transition that gifted crew members such as Jack Fisk & Douglas Trumbull made to the position of director. This season, they're back to celebrate the '90s to early aught renaissance of old-fashioned Errol Flynn-style swashbuckler pictures. Charting the resurgence in genre popularity after the surprise success of ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES (& the Bryan Adams theme song), Dan & Conor walk listeners through the changes '90s filmmakers made from not only the '20s & '30s but also the sword spectaculars of their more fantastical '80s counterparts. Focusing primarily on the films FIRST KNIGHT, THE MASK OF ZORRO, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, & PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, we dissect the style, actors, productions, & filmmakers of these films & others in this same genre or old-fashioned adventure epic mold from A KNIGHT'S TALE to THE MUMMY to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON & beyond. Along the way, we coin a new catchphrase in "buckle some swash," I tell a story about a dude I went out with once who didn't realize that Keith Richards & Mick Jagger were two different people, & we go on several memorable tangents. It's a delightfully spirited feature-length chat that's fun for all... who are all for fun. Dan & Conor's Bio: A producer & filmmaker living in Pittsburgh, Dan Mecca started The Film Stage with Jordan Raup in college at Buffalo & Conor O'Donnell is a post-production supervisor based in New York City & also serves as a critic for The Film Stage.
