In this episode of the show, we are beginning what will be our February mini-survey of the cinema of Antoine Fuqua, which also coincides with Black History Month celebrated in America and Canada. And we begin this journey with a conversation about his debut feature The Replacement Killers. Over the course of our chat you will hear us talk about the way this movie attempts to transplant Hong Kong action movies into a Hollywood setting, the likely influence of John Woo on the production and on the star power of Chow Yun-Fat. We also talk about what Antoine Fuqua brings to the table, Mira Sorvino's True Romance vibes and the many bombastic moments The Replacement Killers is filled with. Tune in and enjoy! Monsieur Aznavour/The Killer. En salles le 23 octobre
His 1989 film "The Killer" is a cult classic of Hong Kong action cinema, featuring John Woo's dynamic style as a filmmaker and highlighting Chow Yun-Fat's charisma as its protagonist. Woo has now revisited the film for a 21st-century audience, shifting the action to Paris and putting Nathalie Emmanuel in the leading role, a femme fatale with a strong sense of remorse. We caught up with cast at the film's Paris premiere, where Omar Sy told us more about playing the good cop and doing his own stunts. We also get the latest from the El Gouna Film Festival in Egypt, as FRANCE 24's Lyana Saleh explains how the geopolitical context is affecting the event.
This week, we are talking about our return to the New Beverly Cinema for a double dose of Hong Kong action madness! Starting off with a Chow Yun-Fat heroic bloodshed entry with ‘City War', and followed by an action adventure epic in ‘The Legend of Wisely', listen in as we break down these two super fun films and all of our usual activities that go along with these bad ass screenings at Tarantino's New Beverly Cinema! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for your continued support and we hope you enjoy!
On this episode we check out the latest film from John Woo, The Killer, the 2024 remake of his 1989 classic action film, moving the action from Hong Kong to Paris with Nathalie Emmanuel taking the Chow Yun Fat role of a hitman with a heart of gold.

EPISODE #417-- We return to our roots with the Hong Kong schlock fest THE SEVENTH CURSE (1986). Directed by the same maniac that made RIKI-O: THE STORY OF RICKY and staring Chow Yun Fat (barely), it's a wild one. Not quite Indiana Jones and not quite a martial arts movie. It's a melange of madness that you just have to see to believe. We also talk about the original MAD MAX (1979), Ford's THE SEARCHER (1956), LILO & STITCH (2002), Edward Zwick's THE LAST SAMURAI (2003), and, once again, we talk about Akira Kurosawa's RAN (1985). It's hard to believe 1989 was 35 years ago. Damn...we's old. Aaaaaaaanyway, this movie still holds up and has all the John Woo-isms that we've come to know and love. Doves everywhere, endless ammunition in handguns, Mexican standoffs left and right...it's glorious. If you think so too, then this film review and talk through is for YOU.Consider subscribing to our podcast! It really helps us to get into more people's heads...literally. He has developed screenplays for Matthew McConaughey, Nicolas Cage, Barry Sonnenfeld, Chow-Yun Fat and many others. WINCHESTER, the film he co-wrote starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, about the infamous Winchester Mystery House, opened nationwide in 2018. His eighth film, THE QUEEN MARY will release in August 2023 and DADDY'S GIRL for XYZ Films will shoot later this year (WGA strike willing.) Join us as we celebrate Halloween with a review of a little known Golden Harvest cult horror film: The Seventh Curse (1986). Loosely based on the popular Dr. Yuen series of Chinese novels about a globe trotting wealthy doctor, versed in the martial arts, and his confrontations with the supernatural, this highly entertaining adventure film from director Lam Ngai Kai (best known for the infamous Story of Ricky) features a talented cast of Hong Kong stars such as Chin-Sui Ho, Chow Yun-Fat, and Maggie Cheung; however, the real star of the show is arguably the picture's wild, thrill a minute, never ending spectacle, in which truly anything goes -- over the top martial arts and exciting gun play, anxiety inducing stunt work and cool creature effects, and a vast assortment of pulp adventure and horror tropes, from exotic locales, alluring damsels, trashy nudity, and insensitive stereotypes, to deadly blood cults, ancient curses, child sacrifices, and HR Giger inspired monsters -- anything goes so long as it entertains! Our bud Travis joins us to talk FIVE movies that hit DVD in March 2002! We chat Jet Li's THE ONE, Oliver Stone's NIXON, David Mamet's HEIST, Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino in THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, and the Paul Walker trucker movie JOY RIDE.
“To repress one's feelings only makes them stronger.” We watched Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" with our friend Nikolas Romero this week and our backs hurt just watching these stunts. Suffice it to say that we've been obsessed with Michelle Yeoh for over two decades and this movie is a huge reason why. She's been having a moment with her Best Actress Oscar win, but we've been on board this whole time. Chow Yun-Fat may be playing the greatest swordsman in China but its Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang's characters who walk away with the entire movie. Jen (Zhang) and Shu Lien (Yeoh) are really schooling us on gender roles in traditional society and their fight scenes are some of best we've seen. We also live for Jen's scorned master Jade Fox (Pei Pei Cheng), flying in and out of fight scenes like a wicked witch. Martial Arts movies may traidionally be a male dominated genre, but Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon shows it doesn't have to be that way. This week, Michelle Yeoh reunites with TOMORROW NEVER DIES director Roger Spottiswoode in 2008's THE CHILDREN OF HUANG SHI, a historical drama depicting a time period that we've covered pretty extensively on this podcast in the past. Yeoh plays a supporting role in the story of reporter George Hogg alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Radha Mitchell, and Chow Yun-Fat!
In 1992, the Hong Kong crime-thriller Hard Boiled was released internationally and blew the minds of audiences everywhere. The film established actor Chow Yun-Fat as a worldwide star and director John Woo as an absolute master of cinematic action. We discuss Hard Boiled's influence on American moviemakers, the electric performance by Fat playing a Dirty Harry-styled cop, the film's somewhat fraught production, and other movies in the gun fu subgenre such as The Killer, Equilibrium, and John Wick. We also debate Hard Boiled's legacy against the long and vast canon of action films.
Claude really wanted to call this episode "Girls Kicking Ass," but he chickened out and didn't try to talk Sean into changing it, so "Female Thieves" it was and "Female Thieves" it remained. (Yes, we've used a few of Claude's titles, and Sean is kind enough not to roll his eyes too hard as he acquiesces.) But the fact is, the girls do kick ass in these two films, and they don't even bother taking names, 'cause that's just going to slow them down in their pursuit of whatever they're pursuing. And while both of these films involve women and their capers, it's interesting to see that they have vastly different approaches to them, based on circumstance and motivation. To that end, we begin with 2000's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's directed by Ang Lee and stars Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh. The film is a highly-stylized Wuxia film whose action sequences are simultaneously tough to believe and breathtakingly beautiful. In part 2, we'll jump to 2018 and Widows, directed by Steve McQueen. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support
This is not hyperbole: Margaret Cho is so mother for this. "This" means appearing on Las Cultch with Matt & Bowen in a true time of need. Also, Margaret's dog Lucia (whose presence is like medicine), the POWER of Pedro Pascal, the POWER of Chow Yun Fat, and the POWER of John Travolta (at least at one point. All this, The Grammys, Beyoncé, Olivia Newton John's Bad Sandy transformation, hagsploitation, "The Hillsong Aesthetic", Reese & Ashton's awkward press tour, Tiffany Pollard, Monique as host of Charm School, Robyn Dixon's latest flop, The Cut's Etiquette Rules, The Geneva Convention and recent Madonna discourse. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a patron pick by Pete, is a visual and audible treat. A sweeping epic about love, loyalty, lust and oppression, and a genre-defining Hollywood game-changer when it came to bringing Chinese wuxia martial arts films over to Western audiences. From terrific performances by Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi, to stunning cinematography and outstanding fight choreography, it's a movie that truly has something for everyone. Despite critical and commercial acclaim in the west, it wasn't well received everywhere though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmOYLyIiL1g (Laura Suen analyses the fight scene between Yu Jen and Yu Shu Lien in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) I would love to hear your thoughts on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ! On this episode of X-Ray Vision, Jason Concepcion and Rosie Knight go verse-jumping with Michelle Yeoh! First in Previously On (3:14), Jason and Rosie discuss the news that Warner Bros. is hitting pause on upcoming projects with Ezra Miller, theorize about the latest Ms. Marvel and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailers, and recap episode two of the Disney+ limited series Moon Knight. In the Airlock (41:44), they dive deep (deeeep) into the A24 film Everything Everywhere All at Once (in theaters now!) and the masterful ways EEAO plays with genre, offers thrills, laughs, and heart, explores mental health, and, of course, celebrates its iconic cast (James Hong anyone!?). Then, in the Hive Mind (1:01:45), Jason and Rosie are joined by the Daniels, the writer/director duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, to discuss the multiverse as a story tool to explore morality, the brilliance of Hong Kong cinema, how the film pulled off its incredible stunt work, and the importance of telling inter-generational Asian-American stories. In Nerd Out (1:37:19) a listener pitches us on the creative comics partnership between Jeff Lemire & Andrea Sorrentino and in the Endgame (1:41:07), Jason and Rosie offer Hong Kong movie recommendations for before or after you see EEAO.
