Chow Yun-Fat is a Bruno Kirby level cool in this John Woo classic where we find out what if you tackled a guy with a motocross bike or murdered countless henchmen while holding a baby. Honestly dude it was some pretty wild stuff. Hell yeah brother.
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we celebrate an actor with an incredible range: Chow Yun-fat. Our B-Sides include 100 Ways to Murder Your Wife, City War, Peace Hotel, and The Corruptor. We discuss Chow Yun-fat's emergence in Hong Kong, his early work with John Woo, the breakout that was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000. Conor and I debate which Western star Chow Yun-fat reminds us of, before resolving that he's quite a bit more dynamic than any one of them. There's debate over the success of his move to Hollywood and his brief stint as a Western leading man (lest we never forget about Bulletproof Monk!), the City on Fire influence on Reservoir Dogs, the John Woo Hollywood run (and why Chow wasn't in any of them!?), and the impossible influence of Asian action cinema on Hollywood action blockbusters to this day.We also discuss the difficult and narrow needle to thread when making a slapstick marital comedy, and why 100 Ways to Murder Your Wife fails where a few succeed.

On this episode, host Dr Pasquale Iannone discusses one of the finest action films ever made, John Woo's masterpiece of Hong Kong 'Heroic Bloodshed' Hard Boiled (1992). The film has recently been restored in 4K and is about to be released in a special edition box set courtesy of Arrow Video.Starring Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung, Hard Boiled tells of a hard drinking Hong Kong cop Yuen (aka Tequila) and his investigation into a violent arms smuggling ring.Joining Pasquale to discuss the film is Dr Lin Feng. Lin is Associate Professor in Film Studies at the University of Leicester. She specialises in Chinese-language cinemas, East Asian film history and her other interests include transnational popular screen cultures, and cinematic representation and reception of gender and race. Lin's monograph Chow Yun Fat and the Territories of Hong Kong Stardom was published by Edinburgh University Press in 2017, while her co-edited collection Renegotiating Film Genres in East Asian Cinemas and Beyond came out in 2020 via Palgrave MacMillan. Lin has also contributed a video interview to the upcoming Hard Boiled Blu-ray release.Lin and Pasquale talk about the landscape of Hong Kong cinema in the 80s and 90s, the career of director John Woo as well as the star image of actor Chow Yun Fat. They then discuss some key scenes from Hard Boiled, exploring the film's distinctive action scenes as well as elements such as performance and costume design.

A tough-as-nails cop (Chow Yun-Fat) teams up with an undercover agent (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) to shut down a sinister gun-runner (Anthony Wong) and the rest of his gang in Hong Kong. That's the standard IMDB description for the plot of this film but as directed by master action autuer John Woo (The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, Face/Off, Mission Impossible II), it's SO much more! Infact this is now remembered as one of the more influential action films of the 1990's featuring Woo's unique blend of balletic action, melodramatic flourishes, and doves. (Well in this case, origami doves) Beloved action star Chow Yun Fat (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Killer) leads the charge as "Tequila," a Hong Kong super-cop who has it all: he's good with babies, he plays a mean clarinet, and he can dispatch with any number of bad guys with a nickel-plated Norinco pistol in each hand. ;) Decades before John Wick would reinvent the action genre with "gun fu," this international sensation did it first....and better? Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are sadly concluding out "John Woo Gun Fu: Origins" theme with the highly rated The Killer (1989).Chow Yun-Fat is at it again and this film feels like a good balance between the story focused A Better Tomorrow (1986) and the action blowout Hard Boiled (1992). There are certainly some great (and even legendary) action secquences in this film, but you also care alot more for the characters' motivations and, importantly, what happens to them in the story. I gave this film an 8.5/10 for having the best balance in this theme with the only downside being that it dragged a bit in the middle. 1999's The Corruptor was the second attempt by an American film studio to make an international star out of Chow Yun Fat. The Replacement Killers a year before with Mira Sorvino failed to thrill audiences and The Corruptor, about a New York Chinatown war between two rival gangs, didn't exactly make waves. Ironically, it took a Tiawanese filmmaker, Ang Lee, to bring Fat world recognition a year later with hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Dan and Vicky discuss the Mark Wahlberg co-starring buddy cop actioner along with some political talk and lots of recently seen including The Conjuring: Last Rites, The Long Walk, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and the plays Gene and Gilda and Blood Orange. Today on the 5: For one of our commentary films this week, Lando and I watched 1992's Full Contact. This movie is a Chow Yun-Fat vehicle that would probably be a lot more well known if not for another action film he starred in that same year that hit slightly harder. Even so, this is a fun film with some wildly unique characters and film techniques.
In the second installment of the Midnight Movie Cowboys deep dive into the overlooked gems of Hong Kong's Golden Age, John and Garo review the Chow Yun Fat action comedy TIGER ON BEAT. Lots of insights and trivia along with the usual shenanigans.
Today on the 5: The latest spin of the movie wheel landed on Witch From Nepal, an early Chow Yun-Fat vehicle that is loaded with magic, mysticism, and some questionable morality. While the movie has some good moments and is generally enjoyable, it has the bad luck of following the far superior The Boxer's Omen in our viewing history.

His 1989 film "The Killer" is a cult classic of Hong Kong action cinema, featuring John Woo's dynamic style as a filmmaker and highlighting Chow Yun-Fat's charisma as its protagonist. Woo has now revisited the film for a 21st-century audience, shifting the action to Paris and putting Nathalie Emmanuel in the leading role, a femme fatale with a strong sense of remorse. We caught up with cast at the film's Paris premiere, where Omar Sy told us more about playing the good cop and doing his own stunts. We also get the latest from the El Gouna Film Festival in Egypt, as FRANCE 24's Lyana Saleh explains how the geopolitical context is affecting the event.

Join us as we celebrate Halloween with a review of a little known Golden Harvest cult horror film: The Seventh Curse (1986). Loosely based on the popular Dr. Yuen series of Chinese novels about a globe trotting wealthy doctor, versed in the martial arts, and his confrontations with the supernatural, this highly entertaining adventure film from director Lam Ngai Kai (best known for the infamous Story of Ricky) features a talented cast of Hong Kong stars such as Chin-Sui Ho, Chow Yun-Fat, and Maggie Cheung; however, the real star of the show is arguably the picture's wild, thrill a minute, never ending spectacle, in which truly anything goes -- over the top martial arts and exciting gun play, anxiety inducing stunt work and cool creature effects, and a vast assortment of pulp adventure and horror tropes, from exotic locales, alluring damsels, trashy nudity, and insensitive stereotypes, to deadly blood cults, ancient curses, child sacrifices, and HR Giger inspired monsters -- anything goes so long as it entertains! Our bud Travis joins us to talk FIVE movies that hit DVD in March 2002! We chat Jet Li's THE ONE, Oliver Stone's NIXON, David Mamet's HEIST, Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino in THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, and the Paul Walker trucker movie JOY RIDE.
“To repress one's feelings only makes them stronger.” We watched Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" with our friend Nikolas Romero this week and our backs hurt just watching these stunts. Suffice it to say that we've been obsessed with Michelle Yeoh for over two decades and this movie is a huge reason why. She's been having a moment with her Best Actress Oscar win, but we've been on board this whole time. Chow Yun-Fat may be playing the greatest swordsman in China but its Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang's characters who walk away with the entire movie. Jen (Zhang) and Shu Lien (Yeoh) are really schooling us on gender roles in traditional society and their fight scenes are some of best we've seen. We also live for Jen's scorned master Jade Fox (Pei Pei Cheng), flying in and out of fight scenes like a wicked witch. Martial Arts movies may traidionally be a male dominated genre, but Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon shows it doesn't have to be that way. Hansal Mehta joins us for a chat on two of his early films, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar and Chhal. One's a black comedy about end of innocence. The other's a sharp action drama centered around betrayal. Both films had compelling story lines, terrific cast, great music and both attempted something new in their technique. Two films I wish more people would watch. Why? I make my case on the episode. Countdown #429 Why break down the best ten films from individual countries on a whole continent when you can group them all together and kill many birds with one stone? That may be Wayne's thinking when it comes to talking the Top 10 Asian Films, or it could be he just hasn't seen enough films from this region of the world. Either way, Paul is frustrated by the number of fantastic films he's had to edit off this list. But fear not, all is forgiven when International Action Star - or is that Hero? - Chow Yun Fat enters the fray and the boys can geek out over some of the incredible action films the continent (lol) of Asia has gifted us. Find out which film tops them all, as The Countdown continues ... Check out the show's first draft of a website for your one-stop shop for all things related to The Countdown. This is not hyperbole: Margaret Cho is so mother for this. "This" means appearing on Las Cultch with Matt & Bowen in a true time of need. Also, Margaret's dog Lucia (whose presence is like medicine), the POWER of Pedro Pascal, the POWER of Chow Yun Fat, and the POWER of John Travolta (at least at one point. All this, The Grammys, Beyoncé, Olivia Newton John's Bad Sandy transformation, hagsploitation, "The Hillsong Aesthetic", Reese & Ashton's awkward press tour, Tiffany Pollard, Monique as host of Charm School, Robyn Dixon's latest flop, The Cut's Etiquette Rules, The Geneva Convention and recent Madonna discourse.
