Smith and Stew from It Doesn't Hold Up podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Smith's choice The Net. The Net (1995) is an action thriller staring Sandra Bullock as a systems analyst from producer turned director Irwin Winkler. Angela Bennett (Bullock) a single, permanently online systems analyst gets involved in a conspiracy when she unknowingly receives a floppy disk with confidential information. On vacation she meets Jack (Jeremy Northam) who under the guise of a holiday romance tries to kill Angela. She manages to escape but quickly discovers her identity has been erased online. The Net is a film that shows us the thrills of ordering pizza online and the indestructible floppy disk. Time has not been kind to films about ‘the internet' from the 1990s and The Net is no exception. There is no reason for this film to be two hours but it is! This is reflected in the scoring and The Net scores 2.49 overall. Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) and Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Hannah's choice Back to Black. Back to Black (2024) is a biographical film based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Sam (Nowhere Boy) Taylor-Johnson it stars Marisa Abela as Amy, Jack O'Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Cynthia Levy. Back to Black follows the standard music biopic structure and starts with Amy's love of singing in her home with her dad Mitch and grandmother Cynthia. She is quickly discovered and releases her debut album Frank. Things start going downhill when Amy meets Blake, the love of her life who also happens to be a bad influence on her. Back to Black has been heavily criticised for its representation of Mitch and Blake and failure to show Amy as anything other than a sad lonely addict. Recommendability scores reflected this and together with low scores across the other categories Back to Black scores 2.64 overall. Watch Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy instead. Elwood Jones (Asian Cinema Film Club podcast) and The Reverend Scott K (The Church of Tarantino podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Elwood's choice World War Z. World War Z (2013) is an action zombie film film directed by Marc (Quantum of Solace) Forster and inspired by the book of the same name by Max Brooks. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, an ex United Nations investigator who is tasked with finding the source and also a potential cure for a sudden zombie apocalypse. World War Z's biggest downfall is that it came out after the genre defining 28 Days Later. In its attempt to out do 28 Days Later running zombies it creates zombies that aren't really zombies. It's also biggest downfall is its decision to not stay faithful to the source material and take its name but go in a different direction. It also fails the genre by being a PG-13 certificate and lacks the gore to be a true zombie film. This was reflected in the recommendability scores, it's two hour plus runtime affected repeat viewing and engagement categories to give an overall score of 3.37. Kim Marsh and Alice Nagle from Fetch the Smelling Salts podcast join Flixwatcher to review Kim's choice Hidden Figures. Hidden Figures (2016) is loosely based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly. It tells the incredible true story of the biographies of three African-American women who worked as computers to solve problems for engineers and others at NASA. Directed by Theodore Melfi it stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Goble Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as Mary Jackson. Other real life character include Mahershala Ali as Jim Johnson, who marries Katherine and Glen Powell as astronaut John Glenn. In fictional roles it also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons. Hidden Figures shines a light on the impressive work done by women of colour in behind the scenes roles. However, there are a number of fictional scenes and several inaccuracies, some that lean into the white saviour trope. Recommendability scores were very favourable despite the historical inaccuracies. Fairly solid scores across the remaining categories give a very respectable score of 4.34 overall. Ian and Michael from Lord Of Adders Black: A Black mo baadder Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Ian's choice The Death of Stalin. The Death of Stalin (2017) is a satirical black comedy written and directed by Armando (The Thick of It) Iannucci. In the wake of the death of Joseph Stalin, the remaining members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union bicker and fight over who will succeed him. The Death of Stalin attempts to condense a very complex period of what was then the Soviet Union into 1 hour and 47 minutes with added satirical comedy. Its sheer number of key players adds to its denseness. It's tricky balance of humour and people being shot in the head won't be for everyone and the recommendability scores reflected this. Natasha Willings (Limitless Learning education services) and Sarah McDowell (The SEO Mindset Podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Natasha's choice King Richard. King Richard (2011) is a biographical sport drama directed by Reinaldo Marcus (Monsters and Men) Green. It tells the story of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams from the point of view of their father and coach Richard Williams. It stars Will Smith as Richard, Saniyya Sidney as Venus, Demi Singleton as Serena, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Oracene ‘Brandy' Price, the sisters mother and Jon Bernthal as Rick Macci, the sisters tennis coach. King Richard earned Will Smith his first Oscar, an achievement that is perhaps overshadowed by the slap he gave Chris Rock at the Oscars. Some of the criticism of the film is that the story focuses more on Richard than it does the achievements of the sisters. Scores for Kind Richard acknowledged it is a interesting watch but felt it leaned too much into Richard and would have been more engaging if its sole focus was Venus and Serena. Slightly lower scores for repeat viewing gives an overall rating of 3.82. Stew and Smith from It Doesn't Hold Up podcast join Flixwatcher to review Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice (1988) is a fantasy horror comedy directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, a sleazy ‘bio-exorcist', Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as Adam and Barbara, the unfortunate couple who die and return to their house to be haunted by the new inhabitants which include Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, a teenage goth. Beetlejuice set the tone for Tim Burton's films of the 1980s and 1990s and 2024 saw the long awaited sequel which would star a number of the original cast. Beetlejuice balances creepy horror with genuine laughs, mainly down to Keaton's sex pest antagonist and Ryder's charming Lydia (Ryder was only 15 when she filmed this!). Recommendability for Beetlejuice was pretty high, taking into account the nostalgia and also the lack of real plot. American Gangster (2007) is biographical crime thriller based on Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Steven Zaillian based on the The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. It's stacked cast features Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Huey Lucas, Josh Brolin as Detective Trupo, RZA as Moses Jones, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes, Armand Assante as Dominic Cattano, Idris Elba as Tango and Common as Turner Lucas. In 1960s Harlem Frank Lucas is Bumpy Johnson's right-hand man. When Bumpy dies of a heart attack Frank sees an opportunity to innovate in the drug trade by buying directly from the source in Vietnam and thus cutting out the middle man. Not only that, he trademarks his superior heroin as ‘Blue Magic' and its affordability eliminates the competition. All is going well for Frank until he comes under scrutiny from aspiring lawyer and honest detective Richie Roberts. American Gangster is solid crime drama with a standout performance from Denzel Washington. Like with many Hollywood adaptations what is true and what is there for dramatic effect is unclear but it does make a compelling story of a true life figure. Tom Salinsky and John Dorney and from Best Pick podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Matilda the Musical. Matilda the Musical (2022) is a musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel based on the stage musical by Tim Minchin. It is directed by Matthew (Pride) Warchus and stars Alisha Weir as Matilda alongside Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr and Mrs Wormwood and Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull. Matilda the Musical follows the same story as the classic novel. Forever the disappointment of her family for not being born a boy, Matilda finds joy and escapism in reading. When it is discovered she has never been to school she is sent to Crunchem Hall. While at school she impresses the shy Miss Honey and irritates the angry and violent Miss Trunchbull with her precocious talents. Where it differs from the novel is the sub plot of an escapologist who falls in love with and marries an acrobat that is reoccurring. Is Matilda the best musical film of the last 20 years? It is according to Tom! Helen was less convinced, the addition of the unnecessary acrobat plot takes away from the original magic of the book and makes it a two hour film. While recommendability was pretty high its two hour runtime meant lower repeat and engagement scores, to give an overall rating of 4.16. Eliza Janssen (Midnight Screening podcast) and Tansy Gardam (Going Rogue Podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Eliza's choice Final Destination. Final Destination (2000) is the first film in the Final Destination horror franchise. It stars Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, and Tony Todd and is directed by James (Jet Li's The One) Wong and written by Wong and Glen Morgan. After having a premonition of a mid air plane explosion Alex cheats death by being thrown off. Several of his classmates and his teacher all end up leaving as well. Death, intent on completing the plan, starts picking off the survivors in the order they were meant to die. The Final Destination franchise is framed for its elaborate and red herring filled death sequences that are both wince inducing and comical. The deaths might be gory but the tone is never too serious. The recommendability for Final Destination reflects the widely held opinion that while Final Destination is fun it isn't the best in the franchise. With a runtime of 98 minutes scores for repeat and engagement were pretty solid to give an overall rating of 4.02. Sarah McDowell (The SEO Mindset Podcast) and Natasha Willings (Limitless Learning education services) join Flixwatcher to review Sarah's choice How to Blow Up a Pipeline. How to Blow Up a Pipeline (2022) is action-thriller inspired by the book of the same name by Andreas Malm that explores ideas on climate activism and sabotage to create change. The film is directed by Daniel (Cam - do check out our Fixwatcher episode on this!) Goldhaber and stars relatively unknown actors Ariela Barer, Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Jake Weary, and Irene Bedard.   The film version follows a fictional group of eight people who are brought together to blow up an oil pipeline at two key locations. Their motivations range from being directly affected by the actions of the oil company or to be climate activists. They all feel that non-disruptive action is not sufficient and are prepared to risk prison to carry out the plan.   Recommendability scores for How to Blow Up a Pipeline were pretty strong, everyone agreed it was an important subject and opened up interesting conversations on climate activism. Scores were lower for repeat viewing but due to its punchy runtime and fast moving narrative it scores a very respectable 3.51 overall. Podcast producers Charles Commins and Vic Turnbull join Flixwatcher to review Charles' choice The Final: Attack on Wembley. The Final: Attack on Wembley (2024) is a Netflix documentary explores the anti-social behaviour and attempt made by 6000 football fans/hooligans to enter Wembley without a ticket to watch the Euro 2021 Finals. The documentary is made up of news and mobile phone footage from the day and interviews. It is notable that there are no famous names interviewed and some of the choice of “fans” to interview are an embarrassment to football. There is a distinctive lack of journalism in this documentary. Illegal and anti-social behaviour is given a platform and not challenged and very little insight is given from the other interviews. Very few questions are asked about the apparent lack of concern or real plans for dealing with the chaos inside and outside. Recommendability scores for The Final: Attack on Wembley reflected the overall quality of the content and the lack of investigation by the filmmakers. If you're an England football fan you'll probably find it interesting. Low scores for repeat viewing give an overall rating of 2.93. Chris and Sumit from Breaking Atoms podcast join Flixwatcher to review Chris' choice They Cloned Tyrone. They Cloned Tyrone (2023) is a science fiction action comedy mystery film directed by Juel (Creed II writer) Taylor in his directorial debut. It stars John Boyega as Fontaine/Tyrone, a local drug dealer, Jamie Foxx as Slick Charles a pimp and Teyonah Parris as Yo-Yo, one of Slick's girls. One evening Fontaine is doing business with Slick where he is shot and fatally killed by a rival dealer Isaac. The following day Slick is surprised to see Fontaine apparently alive and well, with no recognition of the previous day or shooting. Fontaine and Slick find Yo-Yo who confirms the shooting and the trio follow a vehicle to a house that reveals a secret lab where a very strange experiment is taking place. They Cloned Tyrone brings a variety of genres together including sci-fi and blaxploitation and at times a Scooby Doo mystery. In trying to bring in so many genres it sometimes feels a little unfocused and many of its ideas are not fully fleshed out. However the three main leads are so enjoyable to watch playing off each other that it's hard not to enjoy the adventure. Recommendability scores for They Cloned Tyrone were pretty solid, but with a runtime of two hours it loses points for repeat viewing and engagement to score a respectable 3.47 overall. Directed by Jon (Spider-Man: Homecoming) Watts, it sees Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Zendaya's MJ, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Jacob Batalon as Ned.  Directly following the events from Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man has been revealed by Mysterio. William (Bill) DeMeritt (actor and writer) and James III (Black Men Can't Jump [In Hollywood] podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Bill's choice Spaceman. Spaceman (2024) is a science fiction drama based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař and directed by Johan (Chernobyl) Renck. It stars Adam Sandler as Jakub Procházka, a Czech astronaut six months into a space mission to investigate a mysterious cloud of dust and particles, called Chopra. Carey Mulligan is Lenka, Jakub's pregnant wife. Isabella Rossellini co stars as Commissioner Tuma, Jakub's commanding officer with Paul Dano who voices Hanuš, an extraterrestrial spider. Jakub is lonely and misses Lenka. Unbeknown to Jakub, Lenka has sent a message says she wants to leave him. The message is intercepted by Commissioner Tuma who rules that Jakub should not receive the message as it will worsen his mental health and compromise the mission. Days later a telepathic spider appears inside the spaceship and they discuss humanity. Spaceman is a curious film, by casting Sandler and Mulligan it instantly asks you to suspend belief that Jakub is Czech, its easier to believe in a space spider than the implied quirkiness of Jakub's existence in space. Even less easier to believe is the central romance. Recommendability scores for Spaceman were quite mediocre, despite there being a talking spider it is quite dull. Similar scores across the remaining categories give Spaceman an overall score of 3.69. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2024 44:36

The Art of the Heist: Why "Logan Lucky" is a Must-Watch Heist movies have been thrilling audiences for decades with their intricate plots, charismatic characters, and the undeniable rush from watching a well-crafted caper unfold. "Logan Lucky," directed by Steven Soderbergh, is an exceptional entry in this exciting genre. Here's why you should add it to your must-watch list. A Fresh Take on Familiar Territory At its core, "Logan Lucky" is about pulling off an impossible robbery. But rather than treading overused ground, it offers a fresh perspective by setting the action in the American South and infusing every scene with heart and humour. Channing Tatum leads as Jimmy Logan—a man determined to reverse his family's curse with one grand heist during a NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Star-Studded Performances That Charm The film boasts both grounded and delightfully over-the-top performances—none more so than Daniel Craig's Joe Bang, an explosives expert who steals every scene he's in. The trio makes for an unforgettable team, with Adam Driver playing Jimmy's one-armed brother Clyde and Riley Keough as their sister Mellie. The cast also includes cameos from actors known for beloved TV shows like Parks and Recreation, which adds another layer of enjoyment for fans who spot these familiar faces. Laughs That Keep You Engaged While some may expect “Logan Lucky” to be another high-stakes drama, it surprises viewers with genuine laughs throughout its runtime. Its Southern charm doesn't come across as cartoonish. Still, it endears you further to each character's quirks—and let's not forget those comedic moments that land perfectly thanks to impeccable timing by the ensemble cast. Rewatchability Factor Through the Roof One key aspect where “Logan Lucky” shines is rewatchability; there's always something new to notice upon subsequent viewings. Whether it's foreshadowing you missed or a line delivery that suddenly stands out—it keeps drawing you back for more fun discoveries. Perfect For Any Screen Size In today's streaming-dominated world, not all films transition well from big screen to small screen, but “Logan Lucky” does so seamlessly. Without relying heavily on visual effects or expansive set pieces, it maintains its charm whether viewed on your home theatre or laptop screen. Final Thoughts “Logan Lucky” checks all the boxes when it comes to what makes a great film: engaging storylines full of twists and turns, memorable characters portrayed by talented actors, rewatch value through clever details, accessibility across viewing platforms, and loads of fun! If you haven't yet experienced this gem—or even if you have—consider planning your next movie night around “Logan Luck.” It promises entertainment galore! It stars Annette Bening as Diana and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, Diana's best friend and trainer. Rhys Ifans also stars as John Bartlett, the navigator of her support ship. The film follows Diana as she attempts to complete the 110-mile nonstop swim from Cuba to Florida that has eluded her since 1978. In 2011, at the age of 60 Diana makes the first of many attempts to complete the journey. Nyad follows a standard sports biopic template, except there are big questions about the validity of her completed swim. Not only is the main swim potentially not 100% accurate, some of the major moments in the Nyad completely fictional. There was no shark! Recommendability scores for Nyad were firmly floating around the threes, not a bad film but also not an especially exciting or remarkable one. Oasis: Supersonic (2016) is a documentary charting the almost overnight success of Oasis in the mid 1990s. Directed by Mat (Spike Island) Whitecross it stars the brothers Gallagher, Noel and Liam respectively as they reflect on their ascent to mega stardom and record breaking double gigs at Knebworth in 1996. In classic documentary style we start with the Gallagher's growing up in Manchester and hear from Peggy Gallagher. We follow their quick rise to fame and the release of Definitely Maybe and hear their tales of rock n roll debauchery. Recommendability scores for Oasis: Supersonic were pretty high, its mix of 1990s nostalgia and the hilarious Gallagher's make it an easy watch even for a casual Oasis fan. James III (Black Men Can't Jump [In Hollywood] podcast) and William (Bill) DeMeritt (actor and writer) join Flixwatcher to review James' choice Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) is the fifth instalment in the Jurassic Park film series. Directed by J. A. (The Impossible) Bayona, Fallen Kingdom sees Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong, and Jeff Goldblum reprise their roles from the previous films. Dinosaurs are facing extinction (again) due to volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Goldblum) testifies that the dinosaurs should be left to perish. However, John Hammond's former partner Sir Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) has other ideas and wants to clone the remaining dinosaurs under the guise of rescuing them. Cue Claire (Dallas Howard) recruiting former Velociraptor trainer Grady (Pratt) to help capture the last surviving Velociraptor. As with all the Jurassic Park films, wherever there are dinosaurs, things never go to plan. Despite there being more dinosaurs and more action Fallen Kingdom fails to match or even come close to being as good as Jurassic Park. Recommendability scores for Fallen Kingdom were not very high. Repeat viewing scores were helped a little by James having seen it five times at the cinema and slightly higher engagement scores give an overall rating of 3.34. As with Knives Out, Glass Onion takes the classic murder mystery genre, throws in several red herrings and is full of fun and enjoyable performances from the ensemble cast. Stand by Me (1986) is a coming-of-age drama directer by Rob (When Harry Met Sally) Reiner and based on the Stephen King novella, The Body. Set in a fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959 it tells the story of four friends who go on a hike to find the body of a missing boy. Starring Wil Wheaton as Gordon "Gordie”, River Phoenix as Chris, Corey Feldman as Teddy and Jerry O'Connell as Vern. Even though they are only aged 12 they all have their own struggles, Gordie is grieving the loss of his older and influential brother Dennis "Denny”, Teddy's father is mentally ill, Chris is affected by his families bad reputation and Vern is bullied for his weight. The story is told in a flashback from the point of view of the “writer” who is now an adult Gordon, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Unsurprisingly Stand by Me is rated ‘most liked' on Netflix, it's period piece charm and engaging child actor performances make it the much loved classic and the Flixwatcher scores reflect this. With a runtime under 90 minutes it also scored high on repeat viewing to score 4.42 overall. A. (The Impossible) Bayona. It tells the incredible true story of the Uruguayan rugby team, who were travelling to Chile when their plane crashed in the Andes in 1972. The film was nominated for Best International Film at the 2024 Oscars. On October 13, 1972, the Uruguayan rugby team and their family and friends board Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. Their destination is Santiago, Chile, but due to pilot error the plane descends too early and the plane stuck a mountain ridge. The impact splits the plane into two - the front fuselage sliding down a glacier. Of the 45 passengers on board, 29 survive the initial crash. The survivors are faced with unbelievable conditions as they struggle to stay alive. This is not the first time the incredible true story has been portrayed on film. The 1993 film Alive was criticised for its portrayal by American actors. Society of Snow reclaims its own history by casting Uruguayan and Argentine actors and filming at the actual location. Recommendability scores for Society of the Snow were very high, the crash scene in particular is heart-rending, due to its traumatic story repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.51. Andy Williams and Sean Wilson from Frame to Frame podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Andy's choice Studio 666. Studio 666 (2022) is based on a story by Dave Grohl and directed by BJ McDonnell. It is the first non-documentary film to feature the Foo Fighters. In this entirely fictional film, the Foo Fighters are suffering from a creative block. To get the new album made, studio execs send the Foos to a haunted mansion where Dave Grohl unleashes a demon and the rest of the band are dispatched in gruesome ways. Studio 666 is an ill advised vanity project and could have been a 10 minute short and saved everyone from the embarrassment of being in a horror comedy that is neither particularly scary nor funny. To say it is for hardcore fans only comes with an advisory that it is quite slog. Unsurprisingly, Studio 666 didn't score very highly for recommendability - or any of the other Flixwatcher categories. It doesn't even feature a new song from the Foo Fighters! Helped by some generous scoring by Andy, Studio 666 scores 3.10 overall. Petros Patsilivas and Darryl Edge (Getting Dafoe You - A Willem Dafoe Podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Red Rocket. Red Rocket (2021) is a comedy drama from writer and director Sean (Florida Project) Baker. It stars Simon Rex as Mikey "Saber" Davies, an adult film actor, who returns to his hometown in Texas after a 17 year absence. The exact reasons for his sudden return are unknown but it is clear from the outset that trouble is always close by to Mikey. He manages to convince his estranged wife and porn film co-star Lexi (Bree Elrod) to let him back into her house and life. While visiting the local doughnut place he sets his sights on 17-year-old Raylee (Suzanna Son), who also goes by Strawberry. With whom he enters into a sexual relationship with and grooms her to move with him back to LA so he can get back into the porn industry. Despite its dark themes, Red Rocket is pretty funny and at no point glamourises the life that Mikey is leading. As with Baker's other films, his characters exist on the edges of society and from marginalised subcultures. We might laugh at Mikey but it is because of his behaviour not because of who he is. Recommendability scores for Red Rocket reflected the dark comedy and themes but strong scores for small screen and engagement give an overall rating of 3.80. Catrin Lowe and Rich Nelson (Don't You Want Me? podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Rich's choice Spencer. Spencer (2021) is directed by Pablo (Jackie) Larraín and written by Steven (Peaky Blinders) Knight and stars Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana experiencing an existential crisis (nightmare) during Christmas 1991 when she spends the holidays at Sandringham with the British royal family. The supporting cast includes Sean Harris as Darren McGrady, head chef to the royal for 15 years, Sally Hawkins as royal dresser Maggie (possibly inspired by Fay Appleby, Diana's real-life dresser and loyal friend) and Timothy Spall as Equerry Major Alistair Gregory (an amalgamation of royal staff). It is important to note that while the film is inspired by a real-life moment in Diana's life, it is based longtime rumours and real events, and is very much a work of fiction. Recommendability scores for Spencer reflected the ambiguous nature of some of themes and the absence of a traditional narrative. Engagement scores were on the lower end due to the run time of over two hours and the vibes as opposed to actual plot, to give Spencer an overall score of 3.22. Marshall Shaffer (Slant Magazine, Decider, /Film, Marshall and the Movie Substack) and Rafa Sales Ross (Sight & Sound, i_D, BFI, Total Film, Little White Lies) return to Flixwatcher to review Marshall's choice Widows. Widows (2018) is a heist thriller from director Steve (12 Years A Slave) McQueen and screenplay by Gillian (Gone Girl) Flynn, based on a Lynda La Plante TV series. The ‘widows' are Veronica Rawlings (Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Alice (Elizabeth Debicki). Left to deal with the $2,000,000 debt left by a heist gone wrong, led by Veronica's husband, Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson), the group decide to carry out a elaborate heist themselves to pay back Jamal and Jatemme Manning (Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya). Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Jacki Weaver, Carrie Coon, Robert Duvall, Jon Bernthal, Garret Dillahunt and Lukas Haas also star. Episode # 332 In the Heights with Natalie Jamieson and Genevieve Hassan from Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did podcast

Natalie Jamieson (Bestsellers podcast, BBC Radio 1 & 2) and Genevieve Hassan (Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did podcast) return to to Flixwatcher to review Natalie's choice In the Heights. In the Heights (2021) is a musical directed by Jon (Crazy Rich Asians) M. Chu and is based on the stage musical of the same name written by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Lin-Manuel (Hamilton) Miranda. In the Heights tells the story of a community of Dominican residents of a corner of Washington Heights in New York as they follow their dreams for a better life. Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) owns a bodega and is in love with Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), who dreams of being a fashion designer but can't get an apartment as she doesn't have credit. Kevin who owns the local taxi firm is selling off his business to fund his daughter Nina's (Leslie Grace) University education. But Nina has dropped out due to the racism she has experienced and doesn't want to go back. With a run time of 2 hours and 23 minutes In the Heights is a long film. Recommendations were very mixed, without catchy numbers and a perhaps overly complex amount of characters it is a tricky film to warm to. The runtime negatively affected the repeat viewing and engagement scores to give In the Heights an overall rating of 3.52. Becky Darke (The Evolution of Horror, Don't Point That Horror At Me and Return to Eerie, Indiana podcasts) and Joshua Tonks (actor and screenwriter, The Latent Image (2022)) join Flixwatcher to review Becky's choice Cam. Cam (2018) is a psychological horror thriller directed by Daniel (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) Goldhaber. It stars Madeline Brewer as Alice, AKA Lola, a cam girl with ambitions of being the number one ranked girl on the website FreeGirlsLive. One day Alice finds herself locked out of her account and discovers a doppelgänger Lola active and performing on livestreams. Unable to access her account, Alice determined to get it back blurs the lines between Alice and Lola to find out who or what is has taken her identity. Cam might start as a standard slasher film but it doesn't go down the usual route. While the set up doesn't quite match the ending it is still an interesting and chilling film that looks at identity, isolation and the role technology has on our lives. Recommendability scores for Cam were high and with a runtime of 93 minutes, engagement and repeat viewing scores were also strong to give an overall rating of 3.74. Episode # 330 Pom Poko with George Wood and Charlotte Sometimes

George Wood and Charlotte Sometimes (freelance film writers) return to Flixwatcher to review Georges's choice Pom Poko. Pom Poko (1994) is a Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Isao (Grave of the Fireflies) Takahata. Pom Poko is the story of tanuki, which in Japanese folk lore are magical shape shifting creatures, also referred to as Japanese raccoon dogs which has led to the incorrect translation of ‘raccoons' to the English version. The film opens in late 1960s Japan, a group of tanuki (raccoon dogs) find their natural habitat threatened by rampant suburban development. Fast forward to the 1990s and the tanuki are facing reduced resources and space and resorting to fighting with each other for survival. A group of elders come up with a strategy to take back their land that involves killing of humans and learning the art of shapeshifting. Testicles are also a prominent feature in tanuki traditions and they feature frequently in Pom Poko, if referred to incorrectly as ‘pouches' in the English dub. Your enjoyment of Pom Poko rests largely on your tolerance of testicles or your interest in their versatility in battling against environment destruction. Mixed recommendability and low repeat viewing scores, at nearly two hours it is a long animation, give Pom Poko an overall rating of 3.48. Neel Bhatt (Empire Podcast) and Lizzie Swindells return to Flixwatcher to review Neel's choice Crazy Stupid Love. Crazy Stupid Love (2011) is a romantic comedy drama written by Dan (This is Us) Fogelman and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. It stars Steve Carell as Cal Weaver. A middle-aged man who suddenly finds himself single after his wife Emily, played by Julianne Moore, says she has had an affair (with Kevin Bacon's David Lindhagen) and wants a divorce. On one of his nights out he meets serial womaniser Jacob, played by Ryan Gosling in photoshopped perfection. Jacob teaches Cal how to dress and speak to women to up his romantic game. Law school graduate Hannah, (the effervescent Emma Stone) is having her own romantic troubles with her wet drip boyfriend. Crazy Stupid Love succeeds where so many romantic comedies fall in being both romantic and genuinely funny, in this case actually laugh out loud. It also gave us the ‘laughing Ryan Gosling' GIF. Riffing on popular culture and referencing both Dirty Dancing and The Karate Kid and with a sweetness at its heart recommendability for Crazy Stupid Love was very high. Equally high was repeat viewing and small screen which gives an overall rating of 4.79. This means there is a new top film on the Flixwatcher leaderboard! Congratulations Crazy Stupid Love!
