Lisa Nuskowski who is the Founder and Executive Director of MOGO Detroit bike share arrived at the Detroit Foundation Hotel on a MOGO bike for a meeting with Darraugh Collins and Jennifer Lee, DFH and me at The Apparatus Room. Lisa and I had time to tape this show before she headed off to a meeting a Eastern Market on .... yes a MOGO. Lisa talks about how MOGO was just an idea 6 years ago and what has gone into bring it along to the such success that it is being expanded not just to more neighbors but to the suburbs too. I've been a huge admirer of Lisa's efforts since they rolled out MOGO Detroit which is part of Downtown Detroit Partnership whose efforts under the leadership of Eric Larson I also admire. Blame it on the bollards: We’ve got bikes on the brain here today at Daily Detroit.  A quick weekend trip to Columbus, Ohio, plus this feature in the Los Angeles Times about what LeBron James’ new bike commute might be like, also make us realize that we have it better than many other cities. Detroit’s bicycling infrastructure, nearly non-existent just a decade ago, is now legitimately something to brag about, with new protected bike lanes popping up on East Jefferson and Cass Avenue, more greenways planned and the MoGo bike share program in expansion mode. On today’s Daily Detroit News Byte podcast, we talk more about that expansion with Lisa Nuszkowski, MoGo’s founder and executive director, and Justin Lyons, Ferndale’s planning director. As we reported last week, MoGo plans to expand in Detroit and five inner-ring suburbs. And we can now confirm that the Livernois “Avenue of Fashion” is the next Detroit neighborhood to get bike sharing. Starting next spring, MoGo will add 30 new stations and about 150 bikes to the Avenue of Fashion and the suburbs of Berkley, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Oak Park and Royal Oak.  We also have an interview on the show with Thomas Leeper. - Detroit is about to becoming the first urban core in America with independent, self-driving commercial vehicles on public streets - A Country Fresh dairy plant in the Detroit suburb of Livonia is closing its doors due to losing business from Walmart. More than 100 people will be laid off at the facility that has roots back to the old Melody Farms brand. - DogSpot, a company that promises, quote, “No Mo FoMo Fo Yo Doggo” (the letter r has been omitted in their website text) has set up two air-conditioned dog parkers near popular restaurants in Ferndale. -  Detroit’s hottest attraction last weekend seems to have been Michigan Central Station in Corktown. According to Ford, the new owners, more than 20,000 people came through the station during an open house over five days. - 1,000 people are going to play the White Stripes song "Seven Nation Army" on Belle Isle together, and we have details on how you can participate. - An update on the old 1917 American Bistro on Livernois - Free Detroit-centric movies coming to Bel Air theatre - And we dive into Open Street Detroit, the new Rouge Park edition. An advocate for and leader in transportation mobility, Lisa started her career at the City of Detroit office as a Business Analyst and shortly after became the Chief of Staff to House Majority Leader Steve Tobocman. A few years later, she went back to the City of Detroit working as a Senior Associate where she helped bring Code for America to the Motor City. It wasn’t too long after that when she started to dip her toes into the mobility industry. With Wayne State University, she helped conduct the research and execute the vision of Detroit’s first public bike share program, which she now runs as MoGo Detroit. This episode ends the month of Mobility. Tina Clothier, Executive Director, PATH (People's Advocacy Trails Hawaii) Connecting People and Places gives a overview of PATH projects, goals, 30 year history, events, adult safety ed classes, the new Queen's Lei trail project, volunteer efforts and more. I loved listening to this show if I do say so myself. Tina and I go back a long ways however had not had a conversation for a long time. Tina talks about the new Kailua-Kona Bike Share program and recently interacting with the Detroit Bike Share community. she talks about the he video on the new pathhawaii.org website showcasing the Bike Ed program for 4th graders, the Kaloko Trail building led by Bike Works and the many fundraising events they host that help PATH create more non motorized trails and programs for safe recreation. It's a great video. We both encourage everyone to sign up for their free newsletter to create a greater voice for PATH. We talked about Grant and Janet Higa Miller and the Bike Works Ohana and people that represent how we all can and are connected in our efforts to do good things in our communities. I talk about similar groups in Detroit, my home own where I spend good deal of time, that are making progress creating user friendly and safe access for bicylists. Lisa Nuszkowski, Executive Director Detroit Bike Share talks about the recent Open Streets Detroit, part of a global initiative to reclaim public space by temporarily transforming streets into paved parks and public spaces. Lisa shares how the Open Streets Detroit opened the nearly four miles of continuous roadway on Michigan Ave. (US 12) and Vernor Highway to create space for healthy activities, community building, and connection to local retail by closing it to motorized traffic. People were able to experience Michigan Ave and Vernor Ave in a new way, whether by walking, running, biking, rollerblading, or skateboarding and bringing ethnic neighborhoods together. Open Streets is a event under the Downtown Detroit Partnership. It was presented by DTE Energy Foundation but it was the many groups and organizations that made it work There was complementary programming at locations along the route- yoga, dancing, basketball, and other health and wellness activities. Lisa shares the long-term vision of making Open Streets Detroit a regular program that highlights other streets and neighborhoods throughout Detroit and reflects the changes in Detroit that are creating so many recreational and non motorized activities. Lisa talks about the soon to be Detroit Bike Share Program and the goals of the program modeled after programs which are becoming popular nationwide Emily comments on the new Kailua-Kona Bike Share stations set up in Kailua- Kona at Huggo's, Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and Hale Halawai.
