This week, we're getting nostalgic AND providing some reading recommendations! It's our podcast's annual Summer Reading Spectacular! We're talking about books that we have fond memories of reading during the summers of our past, as well as particularly fond memories tied to the Summer Reading Programs hosted by the public libraries we attended as kids/teens!    Correction: We discuss the 2024 book Bitter Water Opera by Nicolette Polek, because we're huge fans and it's a fine novel to read during the summertime, HOWEVER, we mention that Polek graduated from Harvard, but she in fact graduated from the Yale Divinity School ~ and currently teaches creative writing at SUNY Purchase. Hopefully Polek will be a guest on this podcast some day soon!    Also, mark your calendars for our Kickoff Party happening here on Saturday, June 7, from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm: www.fadl.org/summer

How Much of Measure O Should Go to Public Transit?

Thousands of Humboldt residents rely on the Humboldt Transit Authority to get around. And for a rural transit agency, they do a really good job. But there are gaps: both in locations (good luck getting to Ferndale) and times (sorry if you want to take the bus on a Sunday). And there are other improvements (like more frequent buses) that are needed to make the bus more convenient and attract more riders. To get better bus service, Humboldt Transit Authority needs more money. Humboldt County voters approved Measure O last election. Among the promises of Measure O was funding for transit. The Board of Supervisors will meet in the near future to decide exactly how much will go to transit, and transit advocates are working to make sure they keep their promises. Colin Fiske of the Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorities joins the show to advocate for at least 20% of Measure O funds to go to support public transit. Email your Supervisors to let them know that you support Measure O funds going to transit:rbohn@co.humboldt.ca.usmike.wilson@co.humboldt.ca.us smadrone@co.humboldt.ca.usnarroyo@co.humboldt.ca.usmbushnell@co.humboldt.ca.us And if you're a transit rider, email CRTP at admin@transportationpriorities.org to request to be added to their transit email list and Facebook transit riders group.Support the show

Locally, the Hands Off protests filled the sidewalks of Woodward Avenue with thousands of people, running from the DIA to Little Caesars Arena and back on Saturday, April 5. They also popped up across Metro Detroit - from Ferndale to Wyandotte - and in many cities across the country. Not only did we go, we talked to people on the streets of Detroit. We discuss the wider things that are happening that are directly impacting Metro Detroit, Michigan and the nation at this crucial time. We get into some thorny issues: Why a lot of Black people are sitting out of protests in general, to generational differences around hope, to what's at stake in a greater sense.  Feedback as always - dailydetroit - at - gmail - dot com and 313-789-3211, leave us a voicemail for the podcast Daily Detroit shares what to know and where to go in Detroit every day. In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Amy Claeys, owner of Daisy Blue Photography, to discuss her journey into wedding photography, her unique approach to capturing special moments, and how she ensures a stress-free experience for her clients.Amy shares that her love for photography started with a simple point-and-shoot camera after the birth of her first child in 2001. As she honed her skills, she eventually found herself photographing bands and later, somewhat reluctantly, shooting her first wedding in 2010. That experience sparked a passion, leading her to pursue wedding photography full-time in 2015. Today, she focuses solely on weddings, providing couples with a highly personalized experience from start to finish. One of the standout aspects of Amy's business is her incredibly fast turnaround time. She provides a preview gallery of 25–30 images by the Monday after the wedding, with the full gallery delivered within 30 days. Unlike many photographers who simply send a link, she personally walks her clients through their photos and helps design their wedding albums, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable process.Beyond digital photography, Amy also offers a rare and artistic service—handmade film prints developed in a traditional darkroom. This process, which involves physically developing and printing images, provides couples with a timeless keepsake unlike anything in the digital age.Amy explains that her role on a wedding day extends far beyond just taking pictures. She often acts as a problem solver, a calming presence, and even a "protector" for brides who might need a discreet way to step away from stressful situations. Whether it's whisking a bride away from an overbearing relative or making sure the timeline stays on track, Amy ensures the day runs smoothly. We also learn about Amy's ties to the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, which she joined nearly a decade ago. She credits the Chamber for helping her grow her business and loves supporting fellow members, even collaborating with Quix Chocolate in Ferndale to create custom-branded treats for her clients. The conversation wraps up with Amy emphasizing the importance of communication—both in life and in business. Being able to listen, understand, and express oneself effectively can make all the difference in personal and professional relationships. For those interested in Amy's work, she can be found at daisybluephoto.com and on social media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/daisybluephoto/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/daisybluephotoBook: Detroit Modern on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Detroit-Modern-1935-1985-Peter-Forguson/dp/1736273132Photostock Festival in Cross Village Michigan: https://www.photostockfest.com/ Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/

David Horsey - Seattle Times The Musk coup is moving forward with minimal signs of effective opposition. Congressional Republicans are rolling over complacently while the Musk teenage Ninjas storm federal offices, and Democrats do little other than scream. A lot of federal employees deemed insufficiently loyal to the Mar-a-Lago golf pro are being fired, laid off or encouraged to quit … meaning literally millions of hours of professional expertise will be lost, replaced by True Believers. In Michigan, the race for the U.S. Senate is beginning to take form in both parties. We take a deep dive into the likely primary contests. Joining the discussion with an update on the turmoil in the state Legislature is veteran Michigan politics and state government reporter Lauren Gibbons from Bridge Michigan. Prior to joining Bridge's Capitol team, she worked at MLive, where she led coverage of the state Legislature and the redistricting process, and before that covered the state Senate for MIRS News. She has covered the ins and outs of Michigan politics for nearly a decade and has won awards both for her political coverage and her work documenting the Larry Nassar sexual abuse case. Lauren grew up in the Lansing area and graduated from Michigan State University, majoring in journalism and history. She lives in Ferndale, and her party tricks include Irish dancing and telling friends what political districts they live in without looking. She is also an expert on music that highlights Michigan! The first major partisan battle with the new split-control Legislature is underway, with the Senate majority leader suing the Speaker of the House. In the 90's this included so-called "Club Fed" prisons like Ferndale in B.C. which included a 9 hole golf course inmates were allowed to use.
