Tony and Fingers pour Mayor Pingree Small Batch Red Label Bourbon from Valentine Distilling in Ferndale, Michigan — a 94-proof bourbon that blends Valentine's triple pot-distilled bourbon with traditional column-distilled bourbon casks from Lawrenceburg, Indiana. They get notes of vanilla, oak, honey, bread, pepper, citrus, and a little orchard fruit — then find that a cube or a little water brings the bourbon together nicely. Also on this Happy Hour: Jack Daniel's reportedly saying no to a massive Brown-Forman offer, why Malört keeps showing up in people's feeds, St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail, hot wings, blue cheese vs. ranch, cigar note-taking, Fingers' deeply troubling food diary, the cars thieves love most, Byron Allen buying BuzzFeed, older trucks, Chevy Avalanches, and why Defiance Beef may be the better place to spend your money. In this episode, Aimee sits down with Clare, a mother of three and reproductive rights advocate to discuss her experience with termination for medical reasons (TFMR). Clare shares how a complex twin pregnancy led to a heartbreaking decision and explains why she feels it is vital to share her story openly. She discusses the complex reality of a reproductive journey that spans over a decade, beginning with a deeply personal choice at seventeen and leading to a heartbreaking diagnosis during a wanted pregnancy years later. After a routine scan revealed severe medical anomalies in the surviving fetus of a twin pregnancy, Clare was thrust into a period of uncertainty. By sharing her journey, Clare challenges the binary view of abortion, placing all reproductive choices on a single spectrum of loss and love. Her story is a powerful reminder that putting a name to these experiences turns abstract ideas into human realities. Why Ferndale is Growing While Other Suburbs Are Shrinking

Ferndale is bucking the trend. While most of Detroit's inner-ring suburbs are losing people, Ferndale has grown 1.3% since 2020 — outpacing every municipality that touches Detroit's city limits.  We dig into new population data highlighted by the Detroit Free Press and ask what makes Ferndale different: walkable neighborhoods, a real downtown at Woodward and Nine Mile, a strong LGBTQ community, and a place where people say they feel safe because neighbors have their back.  Here's a link to the piece we discussed: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2026/04/28/ferndale-is-growing-while-detroits-other-inner-ring-suburbs-shrink/89644896007/ We contrast Ferndale's urbanist-friendly density and sense of belonging with the population losses in places like Warren, Redford, Dearborn Heights, and River Rouge, and talk about how Gen Z, dual-income-no-kids households, and the Woodward corridor are reshaping where Metro Detroiters choose to live.

Education, connection, and community are at the heart  of our CF community. On Saturday, April 18th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. we gathered at the Next Step Gallery in Ferndale. Set in a bright gallery space surrounded by art, the event offered a welcoming environment for meaningful conversation, learning, and connection. It was pure joy with the smell of great food in the air. Food from my sister in laws restaurant, Bangkok Cuisine (in Royal Oak) filled the air, it smelled amazing and filled the air. Education Day is more than a traditional event. It's an opportunity for people living with cystic fibrosis, parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates to gather in one space to share experiences and support one another. A highlight of the afternoon was our “live” podcast recording, offering attendees a chance to hear authentic conversations about life with cystic fibrosis, advocacy, and the challenges and hopes shaping the community today. We all talked about education, advocacy, and what lies ahead for the CF community. The relaxed setting allowed people to connect not just through information, but through shared experiences. Events like Education Day help strengthen the bonds within the CF community by reminding everyone that they are not alone in their journey. Whether you are living with CF, raising a child with the disease, working in healthcare, or supporting someone you love, this gathering is meant to inform, inspire, and bring people together. Every story matters. Every voice matters. And every person who attends becomes part of the conversation. iIt's not just college basketball Madness – the bracket busters extend into the halls of Congress where two of Donald Trump's legion of incompetents got busted over the administration's war on Iran … and on the American people.  Michigan's two Senators took part in the Homeland Security Committee's grilling of onetime MMA fighter and plumber Markwayne Mullin who is set to inherit Kristi Noem's office … presumably minus any romancing with Corey Lewandowski. Elissa Slotkin tried to get a commitment that ICE agents won't be showing up at voting precincts in November … with a response that wasn't exactly reassuring. Gary Peters reminded Mullin that it's Republicans who are voting against getting paychecks for TSA employees at airports. Peters re-emphasized what he said on last week's episode of this podcast about the growing mess at airports. Also on our poli-radar this week The Trump grift-and-grab family found another opportunity for personal enrichment. Jared Kushner, the not-a-government-employee who is taking the lead on Middle East negotiations, is simultaneously soliciting $5-billion from Middle East potentates in the form of investments in the Kushner wealth management company. In Michigan, state House Speaker MAGA Matt Hall is taking a page out of the Donald Trump Ego-Massage Manual, bragging about winning an apparently fictitious award for government transparency. The problem with the organization honoring Hall? It apparently doesn't exist. State Democrats responded by offering Hall with the equally bogus SAD Award, or Speaker's Asinine Decision Award. Oakland County hosted Vice President James Donald Bowman – or is it James David Hamel? Or is he sticking with J.D. Vance? Whatever he calls himself, the self-proclaimed Appalachian Hillbilly checked in to tell Michiganders “don't believe your eyes and ears: the economy is really just peachy.” The Jeff Epstein web of debauchery threatens to tarnish Michigan's famed Interlochen Center for the Arts, with state Democrats calling for an investigation into what they described as disturbing connections between Epstein, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell and the northern Michigan arts institution.  Donald Trump says a former living President privately supported the Middle East War and wishes he had done it, with all four former living Presidents denying that they've even talked with Trump about the war. But … we haven't heard denials yet from President Jeb Bartlet or President Frank Underwood, or the ghost of the late great Abraham Lincoln. Michigan is a national political center of attention. Governor, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, Attorney General, the entire congressional delegation and the entire legislature are all on the ballot in November. Covering all of this is Bridge Michigan's outstanding political reporter Lauren Gibbons. Lauren covers state politics and policy for Bridge Michigan. Prior to joining Bridge’s Capitol team, she worked at MLive, where she led coverage of the state Legislature and the redistricting process, and before that covered the state Senate for MIRS News.  She has covered the ins and outs of Michigan politics for nearly a decade and has won awards both for her political coverage and her work documenting the Larry Nassar sexual abuse case. Lauren grew up in the Lansing area and graduated from Michigan State University, majoring in journalism and history. She lives in Ferndale, and her party tricks include Irish dancing and telling friends what political districts they live in without looking. We’re now on YouTube every week! Click here to subscribe. Generally speaking, there's some correlation between brewery scale and lager quality, and while there are plenty of exceptions to every rule, there's no denying that honing lager beers into the best versions of themselves requires repetition, time, and access to the best ingredients. But over the past few years, an ever-increasing number of very small craft brewers have found success in the major competitions not despite their size, but because of it. Ferndale, Michigan's Urbanrest firmly sits in that group, and their recent gold medal in the American Pilsner category at GABF is further proof that careful process and thoughtful beer design aren't dependent on scale. The beer itself, Kaiser, started as a Franconian-inspired kellerpils, but over the years has morphed into what they now call American pils. And funny enough, it contains only Vienna-style malt from small craft maltster and none of the pils malt that most would expect. But that's not the only way they've strayed from the classic narrative. In this episode, founder and brewer Zach Typinski discusses how they: ferment German lager with a dry 34/70 strain while fermenting American pils with a liquid 34/70 blend various base malts in both lager and IPA find the perfect amount of “rusticity” in American pils manage direct-fire kettle caramelization in lieu of decoction krausen lagered beer for carbonation since the brewery doesn't own a carb stone build texture and retain foam through the krausening process source and contract great hops despite their small size And more. G&D Chillers G&D's biggest edge isn't just the equipment—it's their deep understanding of brewery operations. From layout to production flow, they bring real-world expertise and build reliable systems that last, whether it's a single-stage 5H or a Vertical Air Chiller. New Belgium Brewing recently partnered with G&D to install a propane-based Elite 290 chiller —delivering around 50% energy savings compared to CO₂ systems. As Andy Collins, New Belgium's Carbon Neutral Engineer, put it: “We're really happy to work with a partner like G&D Chillers who helped us significantly reduce the amount of HFCs used in our refrigeration systems.” With 24/7 support and remote monitoring, your cold side stays dialed in—day or night. See how leading breweries are cutting energy costs at gdchillers.com. Berkeley Yeast Berkeley Yeast just launched Dry Tropics London! Dry Tropics London delivers the soft, pillowy mouthfeel and juicy character you'd expect from a top-tier London Ale strain, but with a serious upgrade: a burst of thiols that unleash vibrant, layered notes of grapefruit and passion fruit. A lot of brewers love the clean passion fruit you get from Tropics, but they don't want every IPA to be a tropical-fruit bomb. Coming to you from the studio at TechTown after a long weekend, today's show is all about what's happening in Detroit's food and drink world — the good, the bad, and the "wait, that closed already?" I'm joined by our engineer of both audio and alcohol, Randy Walker, to dig into some big changes at longtime favorites, why some promising spots didn't make it, and where you should actually spend your money right now. We'll talk rum bars, laptop bans at coffee shops, the future of the Ren Cen, and Randy's first impressions of Medusa in Midtown. The topics: Hygrade Deli in Southwest Detroit is in receivership after loan defaults and building issues, putting the longtime corned beef spot's future in doubt. We unpack why some well-regarded restaurants like Carajillo in Ferndale close within a year, from price perception to competition and capital. Randy talks about how Port in Ferndale shifted from laid-back rum haven to trendier, simpler drinks and how that changed the vibe.... plus where serious rum fans should go now, from Tocororo to Mutiny, and tease a future Daily Detroit happy hour. A new Pizza Cat on East Jefferson shows promise for downtown lunches even as the surrounding Jefferson/Ren Cen area struggles. We preview Burns Night with Acroyd Scottish Bakery at Urbanrest, complete with haggis, neeps and tatties, bagpipers, and the "stabbing of the haggis." Are you for or against laptops at coffeeshops? Roost Detroit's no-laptop policy sparks a bigger conversation about coffee shop etiquette, remote work, and who these spaces are really for. We had a "last lunch" at the Ren Cen Burger King and reflect on the eerie, post-pandemic decline of the complex, and how demolishing two Ren Cen towers and opening the site to the riverfront could match reality better than nostalgia. And finally, Randy gives a first-look review of Medusa in Midtown, from standout lamb and cocktails to price point, vibe, and whether it's worth a special night out. Feedback as always - dailydetroit -at- gmail -dot- com or leave a voicemail 313-789-3211. Dare Mighty Things: A Journey from the Potato Fields to a Ph.D by William E Liverman https://www.amazon.com/Dare-Mighty-Things-Journey-Potato/dp/B0FMMWB9Y8 Dr. Liverman’s book, A Journey From the Potato Fields to a PhD, is a story about Dr. William Liverman, who by God’s grace overcame insurmountable odds to achieve outstanding results in his journey to success. Dr. Liverman’s journey began in the Jim Crow South, where he and his seven siblings were miraculously rescued from a devastating fire that reduced their home to ashes on a frigid winter night in Weeksville, North Carolina. All that Dr. Liverman, his mother, and siblings had left were the clothes on their backs. Dr. Liverman has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Elizabeth City State University, a master’s in the art of teaching from Marygrove College, and a Doctor of Education, specializing in teacher leadership, from Walden University. Although Dr. Liverman’s mother did not finish high school, she was determined that her eight children would complete college. As a result, all of them have earned graduate and postgraduate degrees. Dr. Liverman retired from teaching in June 2024, concluding a fifty-year career (twenty-five years in sales and marketing, and twenty-five years in teaching). He is an award-winning speaker with Toastmasters International. Dr. Liverman earned the prestigious Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award in February 2019, which is the highest honor in public speaking and leadership. Dr. Liverman was elected to serve on the State of Michigan Foster Care Review Board. The mission of the review board is to utilize citizen volunteers to review and evaluate permanency planning outcomes for families in the Michigan foster care system. Dr. Liverman has served in ministry for over fifty years and is presently on the executive board at his local church in Ferndale, Michigan. Dr. Liverman and his wife, Karen, reside in Southfield, Michigan. They are the proud parents of ten children, seven of whom were adopted. Dr. and Mrs. Liverman recently celebrated their forty-ninth wedding anniversary.

Hello to you listening in Ferndale, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.Earlier in life I had tendencies toward behaving like a spring-butt. You know the type. The over-eager know-it-all with her hand in the air. Teacher! Teacher! I know! I know! Think Hermione Granger in the early years of Harry Potter.  Over time I learned to take to heart what my mother always said: “Just because you thought of something, Diane, doesn't mean you have to say it.” I can still hear her voice as mom continues to pull me back from “I know! I know!”  Practical Tip: Prompted by Jim Burke in a recent BizCatalyst 360 Friendship Bench discussion, I offer 3 questions that might have the same effect on you that mom's voice has on me:Does it need to be said?Does it need to be said now?Does it need to be said by me?  I know. I know ..... You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Jeffrey Mosher welcomes Mike Musheinesh, CEO, Detroit Axel, Detroit, MI. Mike, you've described the 2025 tariff rollout as a shock to Michigan's business community. Can you walk us through how the sudden policy changes first hit Detroit Axle and the broader automotive aftermarket? Detroit Axle has taken the rare step of filing a federal court challenge against the tariffs. What led you to pursue legal action, and what outcome are you hoping the case will set for Michigan businesses? You've emphasized that despite the disruptions, Detroit Axle has preserved jobs and remained open for business. How were you able to adapt and stay stable while other companies struggled or closed? What are the real-world impacts you're seeing for customers, now that tariffs have driven up prices for essential auto parts? You've called on the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to rethink its approach to supporting established businesses. What specific changes would you like to see at MEDC to ensure homegrown companies can compete and grow? Detroit Axle had plans for a 350,000-square-foot expansion in Ferndale that are now on hold. Can you explain how the tariffs forced that pause and how the company is adjusting its growth strategy in global markets? As you await clarity on global trade policy, what message do you want to send to policymakers about the stakes for Michigan's economy and immigrant-founded companies like Detroit Axle? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

On this pre-Thanksgiving episode of Daily Detroit, Norris Howard and I come to you in our Sunday sport-coated best fresh from a heavyweight fireside chat with Detroit's outgoing Mayor Mike Duggan and Rocket's Dan Gilbert. We react to a conversation that's a look into the future of Detroit and Michigan from two people shaping where we're headed next. We break down the biggest takeaways from the discussion, including why housing affordability tops Duggan's agenda as he runs for governor (as an independent) and why zoning reform and building more duplexes, triplexes, and other smaller-scale multi-family housing are absolutely crucial for Detroit. We get into the realities of market demand, population shifts, and why transit is still the other half of Detroit's comeback equation. Because whether it's chicken or egg, you need both people and transit to revitalize a city. Beyond the political stage, Norris and I swap thoughts on how local development impacts long-standing communities, and why the land value tax push in Lansing was such a key piece of the mayor's agenda. Then, we switch gears for a rapid-fire rundown of where to shop, eat, and support local business for Small Business Saturday across Southeast Michigan, from Merry in Midtown to the Rust Belt in Ferndale. Plus, some of our holiday traditions, why you shouldn't ring the bell at the Two Way Inn unless you're feeling extra generous, and why supporting our local spots matters more than ever. Tune in to today's explosive edition of Joe Untamed, where we dive into the chaos tearing at America's fabric—from radical gender insanity invading women's safe spaces to jihadist plots thwarted just in time to save Halloween bloodshed. A California Gold's Gym mom gets blacklisted for daring to protest a man lurking in the women's locker room, exposing the trans agenda's war on privacy and sanity. But the real nightmare? In Dearborn, Michigan—ground zero for open-border fallout—FBI heroes under Kash Patel's watch dismantle an ISIS-wannabe "pumpkin" massacre targeting Ferndale's LGBT scene, with young Muslim plotters stockpiling AR-15s and plotting a Paris-style slaughter. How many more near-misses before we seal the borders and deport the threats? Plus, Chicago's invading hordes form a "union" to dodge rent and ICE—entitled squatters demanding handouts while real Americans foot the bill. And don't miss Mark Levin's fiery RJC rant, baying to "cancel and deplatform" right-wing truth-tellers like Tucker Carlson over Israel critiques—why fracture MAGA when unity is our superpower?Buckle up for a no-holds-barred showdown with geopolitical powerhouse Halsey English, the Substack sensation and Patreon insider who's decoding the shadows sabotaging Trump's triumph. From deep-state burrows in State and Defense leaking poison to divide his cabinet. Is the ultimate divide-and-conquer, baiting us into forever wars while real nationalists get branded traitors? Halsey's raw takes on institutional resistance, globalist vs. nationalist clashes, and purging the infiltrators will arm you to protect the movement before it's too late.We pivot to a gut-wrenching global wake-up call: the genocide unfolding in Nigeria, where 7,000+ Christians slaughtered this year alone by Boko Haram butchers—raped, beheaded, buried in mass graves—while woke influencers and MSM stay criminally silent. Trump's Truth Social thunderclap demands justice, echoing Bill Maher's roast of media cover-ups and a chilling montage of moms with babies beaten bloody. Pastors plead for intervention as caskets stack like cordwood—62,000 dead since 2000—and the Pentagon drops a stark warning to these faith-killers. Then, in our fiery reaction block, we unleash the ultimate taxpayer revolt: a blistering Fax Blast to Congress exposing Democrats' SNAP scam, where illegals gorge on $2.4M fraud rings and 59% welfare abuse via anchor babies, surging costs 40% under Biden's border betrayal. Demand the SNAP Integrity Act now—strip benefits from invaders, enforce work rules, and prosecute the grifters—or watch America starve while sanctuary scum feast. This is your battle cry—join the fight, fax your reps, and reclaim our nation before the swamp swallows us whole!

11-4-25 Tonight we're talking with Bill Bellair, founder of the Michigan Mead Coalition. We're going to talk about mead in competition. Bill Bellair began his mead-making journey in 2008 when his mother expressed interest in trying tej, a traditional Ethiopian honey wine, which was unavailable locally. His early attempts—while not without the occasional "bottle bomb"—yielded surprisingly delicious results. Following this, Bill turned his attention to beer brewing, and it would be several years before he returned to crafting mead. During this time, he joined the Metro Enologist 'n' Zymurgist (MENZ) club, where he expanded his skills in winemaking. This experience gave him valuable insight into the mistakes he had made in his early mead-making efforts, reigniting his passion for the craft. This marked the beginning of a dedicated era of mead production that continues to this day. In 2019, Bill founded the Michigan Mead Coalition, the state's largest mead-exclusive organization. The coalition has fostered a thriving community of skilled brewers, many of whom have earned prestigious awards and even pursued the coveted title of Mead Maker of the Year. This week, Becca from the Royal Oak Public Library joins Jeff & Mary Grahame, here at Ferndale, to chat about some deeply held appreciations for historical fiction, particularly from the late 90's and into the early 00's, with a focus on the American Girl book series, along with Dear America, and others! This inevitably leads into discussions of Banned Books Week, which, by the way, we're in the middle of, right now!  Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and raises awareness about attempts to censor/remove books from the shelves of public libraries, school libraries, and bookstores.

The Howard Stern Show over at SiriusXM, more WNBA green dildos, kratom crackdown, a cop cam Karen, Andy Green update, a new China virus, and bad AI Katy Perry & Paul McCartney stories. Watch Drew on the Catching Up Podcast. A third dildo has been tossed on a WNBA court. A FOURTH dildo was thwarted. We're reminded of the best dildo video on the internet. Brooke Hogan sucks at music and being a daughter. She didn't attend Hulk's funeral. RIP Loni Anderson. Drew would rather nail Jan Smithers. BranDon does not look like this murderer. Howard Stern will not be renewed on SiriusXM. What will become of his 90 employees? Drew is interested in Kratom. Jim Bentley is on the mend following his ATV accident. Andy Green is still roaming the streets of NYC and telling stories. Kim Kardashian is out to find Amy Bradley from Amy Bradley Is Missing fame on Netflix. Wide mouth Carly Simon once nailed New York Mets star Keith Hernandez. Prince Harry quit his own charity. Kate Merrill is suing her former CBS TV station WBZ in Boston. We watch a beast of a woman battle with the police. The Woodward Dream Cruise is creeping up. Let Drew know about any Aston Martin events for his buddy, The Wild Man. Marc gets more crap for taking his kids to a Katy Perry concert. Did Katy Perry perform in Ferndale or is it just a BS AI story? Paul McCartney definitely DID NOT visit Phil Collins in the hospital. China has a new virus floating around. Todd Blanche and Ghislaine Maxwell had a 9-hour conversation just for her to say Trump didn't do anything. The transcripts may be released. Donald Trump misnamed Kristi Noem. Trump has also been de-banked. The brawl in Cincinnati won't go away. JD Vance's half-brother enters the mix. Check out this bike crash. Cameron Diaz is declared unrecognizable.
