In today's episode I spoke with Van Clothier about an innovative and subtle water erosion mitigation technique, and how to build a one rock dam. I know this might seem oddly specific, but after an interview with Brad Lancaster last season, he talked about how he's been learning from people like Van and his mentor Bill Zeedyk about smaller, less intrusive interventions that can have profound effects on the health of a watershed. The truth is that there are so few watersheds and water bodies left around the world that aren't highly degraded and in need of restoration. Many of the communities most affected by this damage don't have the resources to hire engineers and professionals to do survey and undertake large expensive restoration projects. A lot of what Van promotes flies in the face of these large professional technical projects and teaches people how to understand their watersheds and identify the small and gradual work that can be done to improve their health. The one rock dam is a great example of this and so today we'll be exploring what it is, how it can be installed, and most importantly, how to educate yourself on how to interact and intervene in a damaged waterway in an effective way that doesn't cause further damage in the long run, like many of these big professional projects do. So a little background information. Van Clothier's firm, Stream Dynamics, Inc., specializes in turning runoff and erosion problems into water harvesting opportunities with water harvesting earthworks, urban stormwater retrofits, and riparian and wetland restoration in both urban and wildland settings. Van has worked extensively in New Mexico and Arizona on a variety of restoration projects with regional drylands stream restoration and water harvesting experts including Bill Zeedyk, and Brad Lancaster. He is the co-author with Bill Zeedyk of the book Let the Water Do the Work: Induced Meandering, an Evolving Method for Restoring Incised Channels, Recent projects include designing water harvesting stormwater retrofits for the City of Santa Fe, and restoring a very large ciénega (desert marsh) in the bootheel of New Mexico.

A Professional's Guide to Bespoke Fashion in 2023 - Will Russ - R6 Clothier Get ready to elevate your fashion game with Spencer Smith and his guest, the founder of R6 Clothier, Will Russ. In this exciting episode, they discuss men's fashion in a professional setting, sharing insights from Will's experience in door-to-door sales and the importance of relationships and credibility in starting a successful clothing business. They delve into the mechanics of setting up a custom clothing business, discuss current fashion trends, and emphasize the value of investing in high-quality, custom-made attire. They even announce a new business venture of Will's called "Tailored Gents, which simplifies the process of purchasing custom outfits. Here are three takeaways from Will's journey as an entrepreneur: 1. Embrace your failures: Will admits that he was initially bad at selling clothing because he lacked context, having grown up with a perception of clothing through the limited scope of brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Polo. However, he didn't let this deter him, and with help, he persisted and learned the ropes of the clothing business. 2. Opportunities come in unexpected ways: Will's journey from being a door-to-door book salesman to a professional men's fashion brand owner might not seem linear, but it's not uncommon for entrepreneurial journeys to have twists and turns. 3. Passion for the product: Will's interest in sales stemmed from an interest in the product. He enjoyed being around people and found enjoyment in selling clothing over other products. It's critical to have passion for what you're selling, and it's often what sets entrepreneurs apart. Don't miss this enlightening conversation that will boost your confidence and respect level both inside and outside the office. Tune in now to Self-Funded with Spencer! Music plays a critical role in our lives. From our ABCs to the books of the Bible, words set to music have helped us to learn, challenged us to grow, and taken us to unknown places. Hymnody is no different. Through the singing of our hymns, we have continued to build a foundation for our beliefs. Listen in as host Brittany Mangelson sits down with hymn enthusiast and accomplished musician, Dick Clothier, to talk about the history and impact of hymns in the restoration tradition. Beginning with Emma's 1836 hymnal and continuing on through the current Community of Christ Sings, Hymnody has been deeply ingrained in who we are. Who knows, after listening, you may be inspired to write a hymn of your own. You might have noticed that I'm mixing the podcast up a bit at the moment – speaking to journalists and photographers, label owners and industry people – as well as the obvious musicians that make up the majority of the episodes. Well, in doing that, I had to speak to the head honcho at one of my very favourite indie labels, Jack Clothier, the man at the control deck of the great Alcopop! Records. If you're a fan of Cheerbleederz, Best Ex, Art Brut, Dream Nails, Happy Accidents, Helen Love, The Spook School, Loose Articles, Peaness, Pulled Apart By Horses – I could go on, and on, and on, basically any music made with fizz in its heart – then you'll know the label, already. But I think Jack does a great job on this episode regardless, of explaining why his label is such a special, and beloved, fixture on the scene.
