There's some big changes being made in Royal Oak.
Buckle up for Episode 178 of Joe & Reese's Pickle & Boot Shop Podcast, where Joe sips a "nano-brewery" Coors Light, with it's chocolatey notes and dreams of being a craft beer, while Reese confesses he's never tasted booze or seen a concert, probably because he's too busy not seeing colors. The duo dives into a gut-busting tangent about rubbing kitten buttholes and quadriplegic colons for science, because apparently that's a thing, and Joe's wife Heidi texts in to remind them they're idiots. Joe recounts the sweaty chaos of Royal Oak's Taco Fest, where a wrestler named Turd Ferguson paints his white spandex with a brown masterpiece mid-match, and a guy with nephrostomy tubes taped to his legs crashes cars like it's his last day on Earth. From taco trucks to guac disasters, this episode is a steaming pile of absurdity, topped with a raucous roll-call of listener names that's as unhinged as the rest of the show. In episode 100 of The ROCC Pod, we celebrate a major milestone by revisiting some of our most memorable and impactful moments from the past five and a half (!) years. We kick things off by honoring the co-hosts who helped launch the show, Andrea Arndt and Trish Carruth, and by thanking the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and its leaders for their continued support. From there, we relive powerful moments of resilience and entrepreneurship. Mo and Erin of Home Turf Gym share the emotional journey of opening their dream gym, while Siri from Kacha Thai Market explains how she brought authentic Thai cuisine to our community. Jill Gleba (from Episode 1) helps us rethink money as a tool for freedom, not fear. And Jill Plamper at Distinctive Framing inspires with her creativity—turning a wedding gown into a custom art piece. We hear marketing wisdom from Davaughnu Banks, who reminds us that knowing your brand internally is essential before taking it to the world. Terry Poduska walks us through the legacy of the Royal Oak Women's Club and their historical contributions to the city. We also reflect on our shared love for pets, with touching stories from Jennifer McCallum of Firefly Pet Photography and Jill Valuet of Radiant Paws, who helped rejuvenate a senior dog's life with massage therapy.Kurt Pfister offers a peek behind the curtain of Michigan's rock history with his work printing for Bob Seger and others, while Jordan Burns gives us relationship advice by advocating for “overnight dating” to keep the spark alive with his wife. Christine Scott's grit in becoming a licensed plumber after her husband's illness shows us what determination really looks like. Lindsay Madison's yoga journey, inspired by her mother's lung cancer recovery, reveals how inclusivity can reshape wellness spaces. We're deeply moved by Bryce Sherman's story of surviving a traumatic brain injury, defying all odds, and coming back stronger for his family. And Paige Robnett reframes DEI as a “rising tide” that benefits everyone, using powerful example. These were originally intended for specific groups—that now help all of us.Finally, we end with laughter, thanks to Matthew Stransky's unforgettable story of walking in on a naked homeowner during a showing—a reminder of the unpredictable realities of real estate.Through 100 episodes, we've spotlighted grit, growth, community, and humor. To all our guests and listeners—thank you. If you're a Royal Oak Chamber member and haven't yet been on the show, we want to hear your story next. Dive headfirst into the surprisingly cutthroat world of luxury watch intellectual property battles where the stakes are as high as the price tags. From Swiss ateliers to Silicon Valley boardrooms, the gloves come off when horological heavyweights defend their creations against customizers, competitors, and counterfeiters alike. When does personalization cross into infringement? The Rolex cases against Artisans de Genève and Becker Time reveal the fine line between owning a watch and owning its identity. We explore how courts have split hairs over modified dials, aftermarket bezels, and what it truly means for a timepiece to be "genuine" in the eyes of trademark law. Meanwhile, Vortic's vintage Hamilton restoration saga offers hope for artisans who respect heritage while creating something new.The battlefield extends beyond physical watches into digital domains. Samsung faced Swatch Group's wrath over app store watch faces mimicking luxury dials, while Richemont convinced courts to make internet service providers block counterfeit websites altogether. Even tech giant Apple wasn't immune when Swatch cheekily registered "Tick Different" and "One More Thing" trademarks, leaving the Cupertino company with no choice but to rebrand their smartwatch.Perhaps most fascinating is Audemars Piguet's global quest to protect their revolutionary Royal Oak design—a struggle revealing how difficult it is to claim exclusive rights to shapes that have defined entire categories. And as watches evolve into health monitors, AliveCor's patent war against Apple Watch's ECG feature shows us what happens when traditional horology collides with cutting-edge medical technology.Whether you're a watch enthusiast, legal professional, or simply fascinated by the intersection of luxury and law, these cases illuminate five timeless principles governing intellectual property in the modern marketplace. In this episode, we sit down with Angela King and Jolene Plotzke from Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union to talk about the importance of financial literacy and their unique approach to serving the community. After some lighthearted conversation about dogs, music, and family, we dive into the core topic—money, debt, and financial education.Angela and Jolene explain that many people, even high earners, often lack basic budgeting skills. This disconnect leads to financial issues like unmanageable mortgage payments and maxed-out credit cards. At MSGCU, the focus isn't on sales or fees—it's about building trust, offering support, and improving financial well-being. Angela shares her role as a branch manager and certified financial counselor, helping members develop personalized plans to manage debt and set financial goals. Jolene, a former music teacher turned financial educator, emphasizes how transferable teaching skills help her connect with people in workshops and one-on-one sessions. We learn about MSGCU's extensive community outreach efforts. From customized presentations for police and fire departments to classroom education for students, they tailor their financial literacy programs to the needs of each audience. Their approach is personal and word-of-mouth driven, avoiding flashy marketing in favor of real connections. They offer a digital portal with self-paced modules and direct scheduling for those looking to bring financial education to their organization. The conversation touches on broader cultural shifts too—how financial conversations are becoming less taboo, and the role both Angela and Jolene play in fostering those discussions. In a touching moment, Angela and Jolene share the personal challenges they've stayed committed to—Angela's lifelong mission to connect through financial counseling and Jolene's dedication to mentoring her children into financially independent adults. This episode makes a strong case for why financial literacy is not just important—it's transformative when done right, and MSGCU is clearly leading that charge.More:Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union Website: https://www.msgcu.org/Email Angela King: AKing@msgcu.org Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/

The city of Royal Oak is welcoming Sheetz!
Sheetz is back in the news!
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Benson Onyegbula, a first-generation Nigerian-American who shares his transition from finance into real estate and the lessons he's learned along the way. We begin by exploring how Benson's early curiosity and drive landed him mentorships with top executives at Trion Solutions while still a junior at Oakland University. That curiosity paid off when a financial advisor offered him a job post-graduation, sparking his initial passion for the financial world.Benson describes how he dove into finance, earning multiple licenses and working with Ameriprise, where he advised small and mid-sized companies on retirement planning and tax-efficient strategies. His work not only provided insight into the financial structures of companies but also highlighted how many successful clients held significant real estate assets. That realization pushed him to start investing in real estate himself. He first dipped his toes into single-family properties but quickly saw the long-term value of multifamily investments, thanks to the guidance of his mentor, Brittany. Her example—transforming a boutique motel on Mackinac Island into a million-dollar asset via Airbnb—illustrated the power of leveraging net operating income to build wealth. So Benson began expanding his knowledge base through platforms like the BiggerPockets podcast and STR Wealth, all while continuing to be a networking machine. We talk about the importance of mentorship, and Benson shares how a chance meeting at an open house led to his current mentor. Their first conversation around rental arbitrage—a strategy where you lease properties for the purpose of short-term rentals—set the tone for a lasting business relationship. He credits this mentorship, along with a trusted network of subject matter experts including mortgage brokers, CPAs, and title companies, for giving him a strong foundation in his new career. Now licensed with Hub Real Estate Solutions in Plymouth, Benson has officially transitioned to full-time real estate consulting. He emphasizes how his financial background helps him offer a holistic perspective to clients, especially in retirement planning involving real estate. Outside of work, Benson enjoys being in nature, particularly in places like Cranbrook Gardens and downtown Royal Oak, and he's a fan of real estate TV shows—even if they take some creative liberties.Throughout the episode, we highlight the importance of mentorship, initiative, and strategic investment planning—reminding listeners that curiosity and courage can open the door to life-changing opportunities.More:BiggerPockets: https://www.biggerpockets.comSTR Wealth Conference: https://www.strwealthconference.com Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/

Several of these stories and their victims are part of the anti-queer wave of legislation put in place by the UK conservative government seeking to outlaw homosexuality. As the anti-queer rhetoric rose, so did the violence against the LGBTQ+ community. The de Gruchy case was the first time the mainstream press began to use the term “queer-bashing” to describe the murderous level of hate crimes. Before this, the tone was unmistakably mock and/or cruel, but the standard would not hold. In 1969, Michael de Gruchy was attacked and beaten to death by a teen gang trolling a gay cruising spot in Wimbledon, England. In 1972, Leonard Bestwick was stabbed and left to die after an attempted robbery by two young men who “Set out to roll a queer.” The murder of Mr. Bestwick highlights the capriciousness of hate. Bestwick and his friend were just out, as many others were having a drink, and for this, he was brutally murdered. If his friend had gone into the bathroom first, he might have met the same terrible fate. On the evening of September 18, 1989, 40, Christoph Schliack, a German immigrant living in the UK for more than 20 years, was murdered in his Shepherd's Bush, London flat. Kenneth Williams, the 20-something who killed him, managed to flee the city of London for Ireland. Mr. Schliack had attended Leeds University, studying Chinese. He was also a lawyer, but did not practice at the bar for unclear reasons. On August 30, 1987, Richard Lynn Earnest went to his estranged wife's home, where he removed his wife's and her lover's shoes from the car, replacing them with his carpentry tools. Before driving off, he left two notes, one for his son and the other for his wife. A day later, Richard Earnest would be dead. Mr. Earnest left behind a son and a family who loved him. On Monday, June 9, 2008, 37, Jeremy Waggoner, a Royal Oak, Michigan hairdresser, was last seen leaving a Detroit, Michigan bar getting into his SUV with a man identified as Rich. When he didn't return home, his partner of seven years called the police, reporting Waggoner missing. On Monday, March 31, 2025, 31, Kaitoria “Kai” Bankz and 27, Kelmen Merrell King made arrangements to hook up in Autaugaville, Alabama, around 11:40 pm. When they did meet, King and an accomplice attempted to carjack Bankz and her brother, resulting in the death of Bankz. Memorial Day parades are taking place across Metro Detroit including in Royal Oak. WWJ's Greg Bowman has your Monday morning news. (Photo credit: WWJ's Charlie Langton)
It's spring in Detroit—warm weather, a few clouds, and a 100% chance of marshmallow downpours. The source? A helicopter zooming above the green lawn of Worden Park, unloading sackfuls of fluffy treats for hundreds of kids waiting eagerly below, some clutching colorful baskets or wearing rabbit ears. The children cheered and pointed as the helicopter clattered by on its way to the drop zone. Volunteers in yellow vests made sure kids didn't rush in and start grabbing marshmallows until after the deluge was complete. For anyone worried about hygiene, don't fret. The annual Great Marshmallow Drop isn't about eating the marshmallows—kids could exchange them for a prize bag that included a water park pass and a kite. The Great Marshmallow Drop has been held for over three decades in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Michigan, hosted by Oakland County Parks. One toddler, Georgia Mason, had no difficulty procuring a marshmallow at her first drop, her dad Matt said. “Probably the most exciting part was seeing the helicopters. But once we saw the marshmallows drop, we got really excited,” Matt Mason said. “And, yeah, we joined the melee,” he said, “We managed to get one pretty easy.” Organizers said 15,000 marshmallows were dropped in all. The helicopter made four passes, dropping marshmallows for kids in three age categories: 4-year-olds and younger, 5-7-year-olds, and those ages 8 to 12. A drop for kids of all ages with disabilities came later in the day. “We do it because it's great for community engagement,” Oakland County recreation program supervisor Melissa Nawrocki said. “The kids love it,” she continued. “The looks on their faces as they're picking up their marshmallow and turning in the marshmallow for prizes is great.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

This week's guests are Nick Dane and Jaime Rowland of Citizens State Bank, who now lead ROYAL, the Young Professionals group within the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce. They walk us through how the group has grown since the pandemic and what's made that growth possible. We hear about how they were tapped as young leaders within Citizens State Bank (a proud Chamber member!) to help rejuvenate ROYAL and how that responsibility has aligned with their professional strengths—Nick in finance and lending, and Jaime in marketing and outreach.Nick shares how his career took him from Michigan to a high-stakes finance job in New York before COVID shifted his priorities and brought him back home. Jaime reflects on how her passion for community-building and her role at CSB make her a natural fit for this kind of work. They both agree that the group has evolved quickly, learning on the fly, and seeing great results—monthly meetings are drawing strong attendance, and new faces regularly become familiar ones. Word-of-mouth momentum is strong, with people attending events without much promotion. We also learn about the demographics of the group—primarily entrepreneurs, small business owners, salespeople, and Royal Oak professionals looking to expand their networks and give back. Events like the upcoming “Pitch and Mingle” baseball mixer (June 25) and the May 22 HopCat after-hours show how ROYAL mixes fun with networking. ROYAL is inclusive, welcoming, and easy to join. You don't need a perfect pitch—just show up and plug into the network.Throughout the conversation, we get a personal feel for Nick and Jaime—whether it's Jaime missing her adult ninja gym days or Nick's family legacy of competitive croquet. We end on a playful note with a zombie apocalypse question, where Nick leaves Jaime hanging!Outside the apocalypse, though. these two are a team, committed to building a space for young professionals to grow, connect, and thrive in Royal Oak.To get involved, email our guests:Nick Dane: ndane@miscb.comJaime Rowland: JRowland@micsb.com Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/

What happens when a lifelong outdoorsman from Eastern Maryland starts noticing signs he can't ignore — screams in the dark, gliding figures in the powerline fields, and a fox that seems more like a sentry than an animal? In this gripping and emotional episode, we sit down with Derek, a listener from Easton, Maryland, who shares his incredible decade-long journey into unexplained encounters near his home. From his first terrifying experience at age 11 to sightings of 13 distinct beings — including one with Down Syndrome features and a childlike face — Derek's story unfolds like a living mystery. You'll hear firsthand accounts of silent movement across powerlines, glowing eyes in the marsh, and the eerie moment his dog refused to go any farther. Along the way, Derek reflects on the spiritual side of these experiences and how they've transformed his understanding of the world. Locations include the Choptank River, Talbot County, Royal Oak, and the Shenandoah Valley. This isn't just another Bigfoot story — it's a haunting testimony of belief, ridicule, and the search for truth in the woods.Contact Derek here:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100076763059610derekmarth54@gmail.com

There was a Standing-Room-Only crowd as Democrats headlined a Town Hall in the heart of Macomb County, an event taking full aim at MIA Congressman John James. Last week, it was the most unqualified national security team ever assembled Signaling its stunningly consistent ineptness, with the revelation that at least one of them is conducting official business on Gmail. This week, it's RFK Jr. who, by advocating quack medicine while firing actual real scientists, accelerates a growing measles outbreak that's spreading from ground ZERO in Texas. Homeland Security ineptly condemns people to an indefinite stay in an El Salvador hell hole with no proof they've done anything wrong. And the U.S. Senate race has its first major candidate. We talk with state Senator Mallory McMorrow The first announced candidate for U.S. Senator is state Senator Mallory McMorrow. She exploded into the national spotlight in 2024 after an emotional response to very public personal attacks on her by Republican state Senator Lana Theis went viral. She is an ardent supporter of policies protecting reproductive rights, empowering local communities, and making Michigan a business- and family-friendly state. McMorrow is the Senate Majority Whip, serving her second term in the Michigan Senate. Prior to her election to the Senate she worked for more than a decade in product design, media and advertising with companies like Mazda, Mattel, Gawker Media, Hearst and other global brands. McMorrow hit the ground running during her first term in the Michigan Senate, winning policy changes such as ending Michigan's tampon tax, helping struggling businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, and protecting certain individuals (including domestic violence survivors) by creating an address confidentiality program. She earned her bachelor's degree in industrial design from the University of Notre Dame and resides in Royal Oak with her husband, Ray, their daughter, Noa, and their rescue dog, Detroit. At 38, she is the youngest person on the list of potential Senate candidates in either party. Today I'm chatting with Davezilla about tech, the internet/apps, AI, and their place in witchcraft.Magical AI Grimoire helps you to understand how to work with technology in the practice of your magic. Whether you're trying to use promptcraft to perfect a spell, ChatGPT to outline and strengthen a ritual, or Midjourney AI to recreate what you've only seen on the astral plane, Davezilla will be your guide. AI apps can write spells, tell you how to perform them, and give you a list of materials needed. AI learns and adapts to you, and likewise as you transform, so transforms your AI. Astrology apps were some of the first applications written, and in most covens, it's a good bet that at least one of the members works with computers. All across the globe, witches and magicians are finding that technology can have a spiritual essence and mind of its own or, rather, that the spirit world enjoys playing with tech as much as we do. The internet could be one more astral plane, for all we know. HOT TAKES segment during the show if enough MGoBlog fans are there. Tickets. Things Discussed: Basketball big picture: they're a good team, though they've been more of a 10-seed than a 4-seed since January because they hit their ceiling. Strategy has stagnated but tactics are good, wins close games. Take Michigan in the 1st round vs a 12 or 13 because they won't have someone who can stop Vlad. Tre Donaldson needs to play better—ball is getting stuck in Wolf's hands, also Tre's defense has fallen off. Cason? Very high upside: defensive athleticism, #1 on the team at getting himself to the rack, shooting is just bad luck—big difference between his shots that circle the rim and Gayle's shots that barely touch it. But he's not going to be ready this year. During break: Craig uses the F-word. Is something wrong with Tre Holloman? Seth: If that guy played for us we'd love him. MSU floor-kissing: mostly nothing. Seth believes the rule should be whoever wins gets the midcourt/midfield logo. That game was over. Women's basketball: Michigan's playing five guards, the game has gotten much better, incredible what KBA did after her roster was gutted by the portal. They can stick with anyone in the country. Hockey: Need help. No bid stealers. Comfortable that one of the many Big Ten and Hockey East at-large teams will win their tournaments, need Arizona State to go out, need Quinnipiac to go out early enough not to pass Michigan or win their bid. Naurato: This won't be a problem again. What does he mean? Maybe he's going to raid Canada.

Men's Basketball at Michigan State Starts at 1:00 We still have to do a podcast. Dave went to go enjoy the weather instead. This game was over in the first half. 3/24 on threes is not good! Last year's team would've given up at halftime, this team at least fought back a little. What has this team improved upon since their trip to California? Michigan doesn't have a guard that can generate offense. We thought a lot of these transfers would've turned a corner by now. This team still exceeded expectations for the season, the way they got there was just not how we expected. There's the potential for Michigan to not win another game this season. 2. Men's Basketball vs Maryland Starts at 21:11 This game was similar to the Michigan State game in that Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin were the only ones scoring. Maryland got to play a Maryland game and Michigan didn't have a plan. 3. Lukewarm Takes and Hockey vs Penn State Starts at 32:11 Just some lukewarm takes this week. Go see the Sklars in Ann Arbor this Thursday-Saturday! Hockey is now just 42% to make the tournament after getting swept by Penn State. Root for Western Michigan, Denver, and Quinnipiac. Friday's game was pretty fun at least! Despite giving up bad goals. It didn't feel like a super talented roster. Imagine if Michigan got goalie Trey Augustine instead of Michigan State. Goal-tending was unclear going into the season and seems like it will continue to be unclear. 4. Football Spring Practice Starts at 57:47 Spring practice starts soon! Is Bryce Underwood already the guy? Running backs have a top two, it's a battle for #3. Will the offensive line look similar to last year? There are some lower level transfers coming in but offensive linemen can flourish in the right system. Please hype up a wide receiver. Hopefully the two transfer defensive tackles come through. They'll be fine but it's still a huge downgrade. Cornerback will be an interesting position, we want to hear that Jyaire Hill is rounding the corner. How is Rod Moore's health? Who's the punter??
