One of the most famous names in watch circles, Octavio Garcia is today the Creative Director for Gerald Charles. Previously, the American-born designer was Creative Director for Audemars Piguet during the all-important brand-building period from 2002-2015. Responsible for some of the most ground-breaking and sought after Royal Oak Offshore designs, including the famed series inspired by Formula 1 drivers such as Juan Pablo Montoya and Rubens Barichello as well as expanding the Millenary collection with extraordinary creations such as the Pianoforte, inspired by and paying homage to Quincy Jones.  Join us as we take a deep dive and discuss the extraordinary career of the Chicago-born designer. From the earlier days working with Jean-Claude Biver to the most logical step in creating his own brand, Gorilla Watches. Finally to today, and possibly the most natural progression, taking on design responsibilities for the brand created by the Maestro himself, Gérald Charles Genta, the designer who gave the world the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe as well as the Ingenieur for IWC and countless other enduring designs. Today the "Maestro" case design, penned by the late designer himself in the early 2000's, is like a gift to the talented Octavio Garcia. The unique and charismatic case provides a inviting challenge for creative design. Listen in as we discuss the latest creation unveiled at Watches and Wonders, a world first Perpetual Calendar with asymetrical movement, which perfectly compliments the unique shape of the Maestro case for an ideally balanced design. Listen in as we learn about the intricacies of the design's layout and the truly unique approach to the movement layout itself.  This unique episode provides a wonderful window into the creative approach and inspiration that drives Octavio Garcia as he continues to pen the incredible designs that will delight and provide timeless watches for today and generations in the future.  Thank you, as always, for downloading and listening to Keeping Time Podcast. Gemini season is upon us and we came to collect. This episode is giving cult psychology, fake rich energy, political corruption, a sad 12-year-old's album, and Euphoria dragging itself across the finish line. The Knicks are up 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals and Ryan is already calling in sick to work for the parade. This week: a man refused to take custody of his brother's kids after he passed — is that an asshole move, or just reality? Hulu's “The Cult of Nature Boy” has us breaking down how Eligio Bishop built Carbon Nation, why the algorithm literally made him, and why Joyhdae spotted the corniness before anyone else did. AP and Swatch dropped a $400 Royal Oak collab and certain people on the internet had an absolute breakdown — we have words for the fake rich. Euphoria crawled back after four years and we're giving it an honest review (it's not good). Keith Lee said his wife decides how many kids they have, and the internet called him a simp — we're calling the internet wrong. Trump created a $1.776 billion slush fund from your tax dollars. And North West dropped music that felt like summoning Hades. Oh, and Ryan's 8-year-old wrote the jokes this week. She's better at it than us.⸻Segment BreakdownAm I the Asshole?A man'sdocuseries on Eligioft behind kids — and the ex-wife wants him to step up. He said no. On this day, 22 May 1992 the Royal Oak Mines company locked out members of the Canadian Association of Smelter and Allied Workers (CASAW) union at its Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Canada. CASAW members had been due to go on strike the following day after rejecting a contract which would tie their pay to fluctuations in the price of gold.Management swiftly escalated tensions by hiring scab replacement workers, which had not been done in a mining dispute in Canada in over 50 years. The company brought scabs in from across Canada, sometimes using helicopters to bring them across picket lines. The company also hired Pinkerton private detectives and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to intimidate strikers.Strikers fought back by throwing rocks at mine buildings, and on one occasion raiding the premises and breaking windows, for which Royal Oak sacked 38 strikers. As time dragged on, a handful of CASAW members began to cross picket lines and return to work themselves. On September 18, a bomb exploded in the mine next to a rail line, killing nine scabs. After a 13 month criminal investigation, it transpired that the bomb was planted by a striking CASAW member, Roger Warren, who confessed to the crime but stated his intention was to scare the scabs and embarrass the company. The Canada Labor Relations Board then ordered an end to the strike and lockout in November 1993, and CASAW members voted overwhelmingly to accept a contract very similar to the one they had previously rejected. 130 of the strikers then returned to work at the mine.Warren was later imprisoned, until being granted April in 2014. Two other strikers were imprisoned for other acts of sabotage at the mine for sentences of 2 1/2 and three years respectively.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/7869/giant-mine-lockoutOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon.

Royal Flop? – AP x Swatch: Brand Building or Crisis Management? – Episode 81

Openwork: Inside the Watch Industry

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2026 57:30 Transcription Available

We recorded today's episode on May 13, just a few days before the AP Swatch Royal Pop went on sale. We discuss the decision-making and implications of this project for both companies' brands and businesses, and for many reasons, we consistently question why AP in particular would partner with Swatch on this project. On the positive side, we do point out Swatch's competencies in production, distribution, marketing, and retail of these kinds of products. Sadly though, today's events — store closures, out-of-control crowds, and even fist fights — undermine that case, and only serve to underscore our skepticism in this project and the points we discuss on today's episode. In sum, the botched on-sale has turned this project from an exercise in brand building to one in crisis management — certainly not what AP or Swatch had in mind. Across the conversation, we work through the collaboration from three angles: brand, product, and business. We dig into Ilaria Resta's stated rationale — putting watchmaking into mainstream culture and protecting "rare watchmaking savoir-faire" — and the curious decision to direct the donated proceeds to AP's own foundation rather than a third party. We examine the form factor itself (a pendant rather than a wristwatch), what it says about AP's attempt to protect the Royal Oak while capitalizing on its cultural cachet, and whether this project actually solves a problem AP has — or whether it amplifies the access issues that already define the brand's relationship with potential customers. We also turn the lens on Swatch. Unlike Moonswatch and the Blancpain Scuba, the Royal Pop is the first time Swatch has borrowed equity from outside the group, and we unpack why this looks like a near-perfect outcome for Swatch and a much harder calculus for AP. Along the way we draw comparisons to Moonswatch's cultural footprint, debate which direction "borrowed interest" actually flows in these collaborations, and float a few alternative ideas — including an AP-coded Flick Flack — that might have served the stated mission better than what landed on shelves this weekend. Openwork is a weekly podcast about how the watch industry actually works. An unfiltered look behind the scenes — no press releases, no hype, and no sponsored takes. Met Gala: Drew didn't see many people that looked like him at the event. Blake Lively SNAPPED at helpers. Timothée Chalamet skipped the event for the New York Knicks game. Blue Ivy was a total brat. Blake Lively is falling fast. Her Betty Booze alcohol is a joke. Justin Baldoni is soft… but he's the winner in the battle. Popcorned Planet has the story covered. Andy Kaufman was a legendary wrestler. We check out his musical number on The Midnight Special. Drew recommends the Thank You Very Much documentary. John Mellencamp has great stage banter and a giant head. Franki Valli's son is a menace. Drew spent 45 minutes without a cell phone. It was a stressful day. The Cult of NatureBoy is the latest wild doc on Hulu. The Devil Wears Prada 2 made a lot of money at the box office, but not as much as Michael. Drew is yearning for comedies, dramas and Hugh Grant rom-coms. Geese is totally an industry plant. Is Greta Van Fleet finished? They posted cryptic social media posts. Education, connection, and community are at the heart  of our CF community. On Saturday, April 18th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. we gathered at the Next Step Gallery in Ferndale. Set in a bright gallery space surrounded by art, the event offered a welcoming environment for meaningful conversation, learning, and connection. It was pure joy with the smell of great food in the air. Food from my sister in laws restaurant, Bangkok Cuisine (in Royal Oak) filled the air, it smelled amazing and filled the air. Education Day is more than a traditional event. It's an opportunity for people living with cystic fibrosis, parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates to gather in one space to share experiences and support one another. A highlight of the afternoon was our “live” podcast recording, offering attendees a chance to hear authentic conversations about life with cystic fibrosis, advocacy, and the challenges and hopes shaping the community today. We all talked about education, advocacy, and what lies ahead for the CF community. The relaxed setting allowed people to connect not just through information, but through shared experiences. Events like Education Day help strengthen the bonds within the CF community by reminding everyone that they are not alone in their journey. Whether you are living with CF, raising a child with the disease, working in healthcare, or supporting someone you love, this gathering is meant to inform, inspire, and bring people together. Every story matters. Every voice matters. And every person who attends becomes part of the conversation. How SMART Bus Is Improving Service and Ridership

The ROCC Pod

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 27, 2026 28:23

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, Jon Gay talks with Tiffany Gunter, General Manager and CEO of SMART Bus, about the role public transportation plays in Southeast Michigan and how SMART is working to improve service, access, and perception across the region. Tiffany starts by sharing her career path, which began outside of public service in retail and automotive before a job posting for urban planning led her to SEMCOG. That opened the door to transit work, including time with the Regional Transit Authority, city management in Birmingham, and eventually SMART. SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation)  serves Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, along with parts of Detroit, through fixed-route buses, paratransit service, community transportation partners, and Flex microtransit. The Flex service works more like Uber or Lyft, giving riders curb-to-curb service through an app. It helps solve the first-mile and last-mile challenge, especially in a region where people may live too far from a bus stop to walk comfortably. Pontiac has been one of the strongest examples, with SMART reaching one million Flex rides across its five pilot zones. SMART is also launching free rides for students beginning May 1. That includes K through 12 students, college and university students, and apprenticeship programs. Tiffany says the program is not just about giving away service. It helps families, builds ridership, and teaches the next generation how to use public transportation. She also explains that higher ridership helps SMART draw more state and federal funding. The conversation also covers SMART's connection to Royal Oak. Tiffany says Royal Oak has long been a strong transit partner, with a major transit center and access to Amtrak. SMART is preparing a facility assessment through an architectural and engineering contract, and Tiffany sees an opportunity to rethink what the Royal Oak Transit Center could become. Tiffany also talks about the cultural challenge of promoting transit in the Motor City. She says the lack of strong regional transit is not just about car culture or the auto industry. It is also tied to missed political opportunities, regional disagreement, and the fact that Southeast Michigan's road network gives drivers many options. Still, younger generations are less attached to driving, which creates a chance to build new habits. SMART is also focused on performance. Tiffany describes the “Down with OTP” campaign, a play on Naughty By Nature, where OTP means on-time performance. SMART improved from 62% to 76%, with a goal of 85%. Drivers now track garage-by-garage leaderboards, and Tiffany says the competition has helped build pride and better service. She also points to Wi-Fi, cleaner shelters, ADA improvements, and a 40% ridership increase on Woodward and Gratiot between February 2025 and February 2026. The episode closes with Tiffany sharing how martial arts shaped her leadership style, how her mother became her best friend and source of strength, and how SMART is using social media and augmented reality to help more people understand the system before they even step on a bus. They discuss some of the fairly large changes that are in store for this year's show, including the addition of Audemars Piguet and Sinn, a big change in location for Moser, and a host of satellite events happening at the same time throughout Geneva. There are also, of course, a few of our famously bad Tudor predictions. It's going to be a big year for the Black Bay P01, we just know it.  There's also a pretty big launch today, at the moment this podcast drops. We're finally seeing the new-look Universal Geneve, revived by Breitling CEO Georges Kern. Thousands of households and businesses in parts of Hillsborough, Mt Roskill, Royal Oak and Three Kings were under a boil water notice after a test showed water contamination. It turned out to be a tap, that has been replaced. But during the notice Watercare's advice was to boil water, so that's a hundred degrees celcius. If boiling on the stove it needed to be for a minute. A supplier of coffee machines and a separate coffee company told Checkpoint most machines do not boil the water and hit a maxium of about 94-95 degrees. A well known Auckland cafe was forced to take an unwanted, all day, coffee break after E coli was found in the water supply to several suburbs in the city, prompting a boil water notice. The notice covers about 7,500 households and businesses in the suburbs of Hillsborough, Mt Roskill, Royal Oak and Three Kings, after a routine water sample showed contamination. Tap water in the suburbs needs to be boiled for drinking, cleaning teeth, making ice, washing dishes, and preparing food until further notice. Watercare has also set up several water tankers in the area. The notice meant Hillsborough's Hill House Cafe had to shut for the day, co-owner Peter Matvos spoke to Lisa Owen.

It was issued after routine water samples showed E coli contamination. Watercare Chief Operations Officer Mark Bourne spoke to Lisa Owen.

Audemars Piguet is best known for the Royal Oak, but some of the brand's rarest and most important luxury watches were never meant for mainstream collectors or even for public view. These are pieces that exist at the edges of Audemars Piguet's history: ultra-limited, technically extreme, or culturally significant in ways most people never encounter. This isn't a list of expensive luxury watches. It's a look at functionally invisible watches, even to seasoned collectors.OUR CHRONO24 STORE: https://www.chrono24.com/dealer/warriortime/
