Today is day three of the Local Independent Online News publisher's sustainability summit in Chicago. I've taken a few days off to learn more about the business end of providing information to the public and meeting so many other people who are passionate about their work. However, I can't clear all of the deadlines I have and one of them is the weekly radio show on WTJU that airs at 6 a.m. This week I decided to re-use the podcast version of the June 11, 2024 edition of this newsletter taken from the last time I traveled to Illinois. And I figured three days without a new post is way too long, so I thought I'd share it with the Substack audience as well. The Week Ahead for the next will be out sometime tomorrow, and then I'll be back to regular programming likely on Tuesday. This is a public episode. We often highlight large transit systems on Transit Unplugged, but there are hundreds of smaller transit systems that are just as--maybe even more so--innovative who also provide those critical links in their community. Kendra McGeady, Director of Pelivan Transit, is one of those innovators. Her coverage area is thousands of square miles in Oklahoma, supporting the Cherokee Nation, other tribes in the area, and the wider community as well. Like many rural transit services, Pelivan provides an essential link for people depending on transit to get to work, school, the store, and health care. Kendra also talks about her PICK Transportation pilot that connects people in the region with a more flexible on-demand service than a traditional call-ahead and book system. And while the pilot has been very successful so far, it hasn't been without its challenges. As Kendra relates, in the first few days of the pilot launch, a driver was assaulted, and their brand-new van was stolen. While everything turned out okay, it was a wake-up call for her. After that incident Pelivan added cameras, panic buttons, training, and other safety measures to ensure her drivers--and the community--would feel and be safe on her buses. You can hear Kendra tell the whole story in the episode, and it highlights that the problem of driver assaults in transit isn't a big city problem but a nationwide problem. Kendra was also a guest--like previous guest Noah Berger--on the Preventing Driver Assaults podcast (hosted by Paul and Kristen Joiner) and we encourage you to listen to her episode (episode six) as well as the other episodes in the series. Also on the show, Mike Bismeyer relates his special connection to Oklahoma to his career in transit and how it has shaped his mentorship and kindness journey Next week, Paul, Tris, and many past guests will be at ThinkTransit in Nashville, TN. Recent violence on Toronto transit has sparked fears among riders and pushed police and city officials to act to address the problem. But some are wondering whether the measures will actually improve safety or deal with underlying issues. National Post reporter Adrian Humphreys joins the show to discuss how severe the violence has been, whether riders feel the measures taken are enough, and if it's an indication that Toronto is facing a spike in violent crime. This episode takes us back the city of Toronto, Ontario In a recent episode, the show highlighted a collection of recent random murders that occurred on the city's public transit system. Even if you don't live in the city, you've probably heard about the recent spate of violence on Toronto's transit system. There have been some really ugly, seemingly random incidents. And while anecdotes may not be reliable, in this case the numbers back them up: Even with far fewer riders, there has been a sharp spike in the number of serious incidents on the system since the pandemic began. The question is what happens now. When fear spreads, that keeps riders away. With fewer riders comes worse service and safety, which keeps the cycle going. Add in the failings of Toronto's shelter system and other public health initiatives to help care for the city's vulnerable population, and you have a collapsing transit system also taking on the weight of other services. Are more cops the answer? What else could the city try? Will they tackle the root cause of the problems, rather than simply the problems themselves? And what happens if they don't?GUEST: Lex Harvey, transportation reporter, Toronto Star
Baltimore and surrounding jurisdictions face many challenges that are best addressed from a regional, rather than a local perspective. Yesterday, for example, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski held a press conference with members of the Maryland General Assembly to announce the creation of a task force to study how to modernize the governance of the water and wastewater facilities, which serve both jurisdictions. Scott and Olszewski, along with other elected officials from the Baltimore metro area, are part of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, an organization that encourages cooperation between jurisdictions to promote economic vitality and quality of life for the region. Transportation is one of those issues that cries out for regional coordination and cooperation. The BMC has just released a report that studied how best to organize the governance and funding for regional transit. Maryland Del. Tony Bridges, who represents District 41 in Baltimore City, chaired the workgroup that developed five recommendations for transit that we're going to talk about today. Tom spoke with Del. Bridges on Tuesday about those recommendations, and we begin today with their recorded conversation. Joining Tom in Studio A is the executive director of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, Mike Kelly… Also with us in studio is Mark Anthony Thomas, the president and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee…See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Guest: Lex Harvey, transportation reporter There have been 10 high-profile, violent incidents reported on TTC vehicles and property in just over a week. With so many seemingly random attacks, passengers are on alert as authorities look for answers and ways to make the transit service safer. This comes after another wave of incidents last year, as ridership remains down after the pandemic and the TTC considers service cuts and a fare hike. With the transit system, Toronto police and Mayor John Tory weighing in, there are short-term solutions and long-term ideas to stop the disturbing trend. This episode was produced by Brian Bradley, Paulo Marques and Raju Mudhar. Audio sources: CBC, Citytv and CTV News

This episode takes us to the city of Toronto, Ontario More specifically it take us onto the many trains, buses and street cars that rumble their way around it. The TTC, or the Toronto Transit Commission, is the public transit system that services Toronto's diverse population. Using a mix of subways, buses, and street cars the TTC is Canada's largest public transit system. With nearly 2 million riders a day, the TTC serves as the setting for many of life's events; babies born onboard, the first moments of countless love stories, and of course there is murder… and that's what we will be discussing. One of the underrated things about Chillicothe is the existence of a transit system that can get people from place to place. Chillicothe Transit System has rocketed to the forefront of the community's consciousness after the trial of a trolley in downtown last year and the city's participation in the Bloomberg Harvard Innovation Track. In the midst of this, Chris Weinland joined CTS as the new director. He comes from Columbus and a career outside the transit field, but he's quickly fallen in love with Chillicothe, its people, and is working with the administration to continue making great strides with transit. It's an exciting time for people moving in our little town - the advent of a new on-demand service, the emergence of the trolley, and much, much more.
