Dr Alexandra Leeper is the CEO of the Iceland Ocean Cluster and is passionate about the sustainable use of ocean resources. She's working as a scientist intrapreneur in the blue and circular economies, drawing on diverse experiences from working all over the world in universities, consultancies, and at sea. Alexandra has a background in marine resources and completed an industrial doctorate in aquaculture and circular economy in 2021. Her work focuses on sustainable value creation, positive impact in the blue economy and supporting the development of ocean clusters around the world. The Iceland Ocean Cluster is at the center of maritime innovation in Iceland, with a mission to create value by connecting together entrepreneurs, businesses and knowledge in the blue economy. They describe their flagship project, 100% Fish, as an ‘incredible fishy value machine'. 100% Fish is all about inspiring the seafood and fish sectors to utilize more of each fish, increase the value of each fish landed, support new business opportunities, increase employment and most importantly decrease waste. It's incredibly successful - since the 1990s, the utilization of fishery by-products has increased 30-fold, the export value per kilogram of fish has risen by a factor of 4 and a wide array of different products have been developed. Alexandra explains how that works in practice, and how it's sparked a movement around the world, with other Ocean Clusters using the same approach to come up with their own incredible value machines, and create value for their local blue economies.
Does the key to stopping cancer lie in the heart? This week, we're revisiting a talk from cardiologist Nicholas Leeper, where he digs into scientific research on the link between the world's two leading causes of death, heart disease and cancer, sharing how their biological origins may be connected — and treatable with the same therapeutics. A call to challenge dogma and break down traditional silos in science, with the hope of saving lives. After the talk, our host Shoshana shares her own deeply personal experience with illness and the power of preventative action.

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Kyle Eagen from Baylor College of Medicine about his work on BET Proteins and their role in chromosome folding and compartmentalization. In the early days of his research career Dr. Eagen made use of genomics and microscopy to study chromosomes, particularly polytene chromosomes in Drosophila. The correlation between the folding patterns detected by Hi-C and polytene bands highlights the similarities between the two, bridging traditional cytology with modern NGS methods. This work formed the basis of Kyle's thesis and sparked his interest in nuclear organization and chromosome 3D structure. In his independent lab Kyle then studied compartments in chromatin structure and focused on the relationship between histone modifications and the 3D structure of chromosomes. The discovery of BRD4-NUT, a fusion oncoprotein that reprograms chromosome 3D structure, is highlighted as a significant step forward in understanding chromatin structure. The conversation then shifts to the use of a tool to test hypotheses about the involvement of BRD4 in a specific process, leading to consistent results and considerations for manipulating chromosome organization for therapeutic purposes. The role of BET proteins in genome folding and the need for further research on other factors involved in 3D genome structure are discussed. References Rosencrance, C. D., Ammouri, H. The proliferation of tools and devices designed to be used during lactation has occurred without an accompanying body of research to support it. Parents are receiving hundreds to thousands of marketing messages for these products during pregnancy and lactation, a time when they are especially vulnerable to being influenced about making buying decisions that they are told can impact their ability to breastfeed. In fact, any tool or device designed to support lactation can have a negative impact if used improperly or without indication. Much like the "cascade of interventions" terminology used to describe how labor interventions accumulate, parents can also experience a cascade of lactation interventions. Lactation support providers in every setting need to keep up with the use and indications for these products and understand how to recognize when their use is becoming problematic so that they can educate parents prenatally and provide appropriate lactation care and referrals to a higher level of clinical lactation care or medical care as needed.Evolve Lactation with Christine Staricka IBCLC is a reader-supported publication. In 1990, based on circumstantial evidence alone, Jonathan Fleming was convicted of the murder of Darryl Rush and sentenced to 25 years to life despite having what Brooklyn prosecuting A.D.A. James Leeper called, "a perfect alibi." Twenty-four years later, it would be discovered that Leeper had withheld crucial evidence from the defense, and Fleming wasn't his only victim...Just what the hell was going on in Brooklyn? Andy and Rob talk about the surprise departure of Luke Fickell from University of Cincinnati football, the closing of a downtown restaurant, Graeter's Ice Cream being served at the White House and an April Fools prank that probably should not have happened. Interview starts at (19:55). Steve Leeper came to Cincinnati in 2004 to head the then-new organization calling itself the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp., which we now know better as 3CDC. Since that time, the organization has invested more than $1.6 billion in Cincinnati's urban core. Leeper talks on Above the Fold about the gaps 3CDC still wants to fill, connecting downtown to Over-the-Rhine and what he still has to do as CEO. Above the Fold is a podcast by the Cincinnati Business Courier.
Due to a road rage incident in Florida, two fathers have been charged with attempted murder for shooting their daughters. Two girls were shot in Florida during what appears to have been a road rage incident, and both of the victims' fathers have been arrested on attempted murder charges. Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper stated in a press conference on Monday that on October 8, William Hale, 36, and Frank Allison, 43, were involved in a driving dispute while transporting their respective daughters in separate vehicles. A witness reportedly told 911 operators that the two men were driving recklessly and "brake checking" each other. According to the witness, the two men were engaged in a game of "cat and mouse" while driving. Sheriff Leeper addressed the media and explained the escalation to violence. For what it's worth, Leeper claims that when Hale pulled up next to Allison's gray Nissan Murano, the latter was in a black Dodge Ram. At this point, Hale yelled at Allison to stop. According to Leeper, one of Allison's Nissan's passengers made a lewd gesture toward Hale. Then, someone from Hale's car threw a water bottle at Allison's car. Leeper continued, saying that Allison then pulled out a Sig Saur 45mm handgun, fired one shot at Hale's truck, and then drove off. Hale's 5-year-old daughter was hit in the leg by a bullet. After hearing gunshots and realizing his daughter had been hit, Hale allegedly followed Allison's truck and fired multiple shots from his Glock 43 9mm handgun. Allison's daughter, who was 14 at the time, was shot in the back and had a lung collapse as a result of the impact. According to Leeper, the two men ignored a sheriff's car parked on the shoulder and continued driving at high speeds. They stopped the car and began punching each other until a deputy intervened. The two youngsters needed immediate medical attention and were taken there. It is anticipated that both will make a full recovery from their wounds. Share YOUR Crazy Family Story With Us Now!! The question as to whether disabled athletes with prosthetic limbs can compete in able-bodied events has been steeped in controversy since the days of Oscar Pistorius in 2009. But since American Blake Leeper hit the headlines in 2019 the debate has been re-ignited with two groups of scientists on opposing sides.
