The guys cover what happened last Friday at the Special Committee of the House to Examine the Returns of Votes for Certain Representative Districts hearing. On Tuesday, it was announced that the committee had voted to seat Democrat Margaret Scarsdale in the 1st Middlesex District. The 2nd Essex District remains undecided. Electoral politics has always been a career option for attorneys. The halls of Congress and state houses across the country are filled with elected officials who have earned their law degrees.  Legal training helps legislators understand how the bills they want to pass fit into a broader legal context.  Having a JD gives you credibility to run for office.  But what are the options for attorneys who are considering a run for public office. How does being in public office differ from the practice of law?  How does law school prepare you for being a legislator? In this episode, I speak with State Senator Becca Rausch of Massachusetts.  Senator Rausch and I discuss careers in public office and what it has been like for her to leave the practice of law to become a legislator in the higher chamber of the Massachusetts State Legislature.  We talk about her decision to seek public office, what was the path for winning the election, what was it like to come to the State House and what have been her legislative priorities since joining the Senate. I ask her what advice she has for attorneys who are aspiring for public office. Becca Rausch represents the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District of the Massachusetts State Senate which covers cities and towns from Wayland in the north to Attleboro in the South. Prior to joining the Senate, Becca was an associate attorney at two mid-sized firms in Boston, taught civil procedure and health law as a visiting faculty member at Seattle University School of Law, and served as the first ever Secretariat e-discovery attorney in the history of the Massachusetts executive branch.

Today I’m interviewing Representative Denise Provost.Denise Provost is the State Representative from the 27th Middlesex District in Somerville, and has been a State Rep since 2006, after serving in local government. They're most active in promoting human rights and equality, recognizing that these fruits of civilization will cease to exist should our planet become uninhabitable. Provost has written and signed into law bills and amendments to assure the legal equality of transgender people, to improve human and environmental health and safety; and continues to pursue the unfinished work of climate justice, and of making our commonwealth fair and kind to all people, including immigrants whose legal status is precarious.I love how Rep Provost talks about what it’s like to be a representative in the state house. She says it’s like a cross between a university and a royal court. As a state rep you’re asked to learn about many different issues very quickly. As she says, the university is one “where people can call you up and add courses at random to your load.” The royalty is the speaker and his leadership, of course, so in addition to learning things quickly you have to navigate this odd culture.I also appreciate how much she values science and data. In a state like Massachusetts, with, I believe, more universities and colleges per capita than any other state, including some of the best in the country, you would think that the legislature would turn to peer-reviewed research when coming up with some policy -- but that’s apparently not the culture. Today I’m interviewing Representative Mike Connolly.Mike Connolly is the State Rep from the 26th Middlesex District, representing parts of Cambridge and Somerville, and has been serving in the legislature since 2017. Rep. Connolly has been most active in areas of housing policy, having introduced a comprehensive Housing For All legislative agenda earlier this year, including legislation to repeal the statewide ban on rent control. He also has been active in supporting organized labor, calling for a Green New Deal, and advocating for new, progressive revenue to fund big investments in transportation and education.At the beginning of this episode, Mike says, “it’s good to be on the program.” You’ll hear me laugh, because this is before I thought this would be a podcast — that idea was still forming, and Mike Connolly was gracious enough to have a nice long chat with me about progressive politics. You’ll also have to excuse the audio quality, which is not quite as good as in the other episodes after I got some better equipment.Mike gets into some real details about what it’s like to be a state legislator. And he says something really telling about Massachusetts state politics: that our legislators are progressive as long as wealthy individuals and big businesses are not impacted. Did you know that MA ranks 6th in billionaires per capita? Today I’m interviewing Representative Maria Robinson.Maria Robinson is the State Rep from the 6th Middlesex District and has been a State Rep since 2019. She is most active in climate change policy and has written a buildings energy efficiency bill. She is also passionate about transparency in governance and has pushed for significant changes in the House to increase public awareness of legislation being passed.It’s from this discussion with Maria Robinson that I first learned that Massachusetts has the lowest rate of challenging incumbents of any state legislature. Part of the problem with the State House is the culture — a culture where everyone has to do what the speaker says, and where things are done because “they’ve always been done that way” even if it’s clearly non-transparent and anti-democratic. So the fact that people are not challenging incumbents is a big part of the problem.The other thing I learned from Maria, and this comes up late in the episode, is that many good bills have more than 100 cosponsors, but get killed in committee, where we can’t see how legislators vote. She has really great advice for how you can make sure your legislator is actually supporting a bill, not just putting their name on it publicly while working to kill it in private.
