Thus: seeing the Christian bowed down by oppression and depression, His compassion is called forth, and He strengthens with His might in the inner man. Every Christian is a living witness to the truth of this, though he may not be conscious of the divine process. Why is it, my afflicted brother, my distressed sister, that you have not made shipwreck of your profession long ere this?

Work of the Holy Spirit in Prayer Chapter 5 The matter of our prayer respects the depravation of our nature, and our wants on that account: The darkness and ignorance that is in our understandings; Our unacquaintedness with heavenly things; Our alienation from the life of God thereby; The secret workings of the lusts of the mind under the shade and covert of this darkness; The stubbornness, obstinacy, and perverseness of our wills by nature; Our wills' reluctance toward and dislike of spiritual things; Innumerable latent guiles arising from this reluctance. All of these keep the soul from a due conformity to the holiness of God.

It didn't take long for Dara Eskridge and Aaron Williams to spring into action after a deadly tornado ripped through parts of north St. Louis. Eskridge and Williams helped lead the 4TheVille Hub, which provided critical supplies and housing stabilization to people throughout north St. Louis. Both Eskridge and Williams have deep ties to the community: Eskridge is the CEO of InvestSTL, which helps financially support neighborhood development initiatives. And Williams is President of 4TheVille, a nonprofit group that aims to preserve and expand the cultural history of several north St. Louis neighborhoods. The Hub shut down earlier this month, prompting both Eskridge and Williams to reflect during a St. Louis on the Air episode on the volunteer effort's impact – and how they plan to keep the assistance coming to tornado victims. This is the longer version of that conversation.
Historian and author Brian Bruce vividly describes an often neglected but important aspect of the Pacific Theater in WWII: The campaign to liberate New Guinea from the Japanese and thwart their planned invasion of Australia. In his book MacArthur's Bloody Butchers: Company G, 163rd Regiment, Bruce follows the path of four men from the 41st Infantry Division – including Bruce's great uncle Doyle – as they fought their way from New Guinea, to the Philippines and prepared to invade Japan. Along the way they experienced brutal jungle warfare, hand-to-hand combat with Japanese commandos dug into caves, romance with Australian women, and even the devastation of Hiroshima. Assisting the US war effort in New Guinea were the indigenous peoples, known to the Americans as angels, who helped carry supplies and wounded soldiers from the field.
