In 2021, Sister Monica Clare went viral on TikTok. From the account @nunsenseforthepeople, her video about a wild turkey that was menacing the grounds of the convent struck a chord and unexpectedly launched a following more than 200k people eager to learn more about the practical and spiritual lives of contemporary nuns. #NunTok was born, spurring both sincere conversations about prayer and a relentless, tongue-in-cheek campaign for Sister Monica Clare to unveil her skincare routine.Today, Sister Monica Clare is an Episcopal nun and the sister Superior at the Community of St. John the Baptist in Mendham, New Jersey; but as she relates in her forthcoming memoir, A CHANGE OF HABIT: Leaving Behind My Husband, Career, and Everything I Owned to Become a Nun (Crown & Sugar23; April 29, 2025), her path to the spiritual life was long, winding, and entirely relatable.Growing up in a chaotic and impoverished home in Georgia, Claudette Powell's (Sister Monica's lay name) childhood was spent escaping bill collectors and her unreliable father's abuse. As a little girl, she saw Audrey Hepburn in A Nun's Story and thought, that's me. She found herself drawn to the beauty and ritual of the church, wishing that her life could be filled with such orderliness and belonging.Yet for most of her life, Claudette pushed this spiritual calling away. Instead, she poured her energy into her many talents, trying to become someone worthy of the acceptance she longed for deeply: from acting school at NYU, to performing comedy with The Groundlings Sunday Company and a Hollywood career in film advertising, to her marriage. And yet, she never could seem to find someplace she felt she belonged. In the wake of a devastating divorce, Claudette found herself seriously considering a life in the church. After a decade of therapy, discernment, and paying off her debts, Sister Monica Clare finally stood nervously straightening her habit as she walked into an Episcopal convent, preparing to live alongside eleven other sisters who'd taken the same vow of poverty and celibacy. But joining the community was only the first step, thriving in monastic life would be another challenge altogether. Whether it was getting lost in the maze-like convent, speaking at the wrong time, or messing up the intricate rituals in service, Sister Monica Clare couldn't shake the anxiety and imposter syndrome that had dogged her whole life. In fact, she discovered that the learning curve can be extra steep when doing something you love. Yet through faith and patience, Sister Monica began to feel at home at the convent, first clumsily and then more easily, finding family within her fellow sisters and eventually rising to the head role of Sister Superior.Equally funny and inspiring, A CHANGE OF HABIT reveals how much better life can be when we stop trying to prove our worth to ourselves and others, and instead embrace ourselves for who truly are. A meditation on hope and belonging, A CHANGE OF HABIT is a beautiful encapsulation of faith in the modern world and the tangible ways in which we can embrace spirituality and connection in our lives.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

About seven hundred emperor penguins in West Antarctica, only six months old, huddled together at the edge of a towering icy cliff fifty feet above the frigid water. Finally, one penguin leaned forward and took “a leap of faith,” diving into the icy water below and swimming away. Soon scores of penguins took the plunge. Young penguins typically jump just a couple of feet into the water for their first swim. This group’s death-defying leap was the first to be caught on camera. Some people would say that the blind leap into the unknown by those penguins is similar to what happens when a person trusts in Jesus for salvation. Putting faith in Him is just the opposite. The author of Hebrews said, “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). Enoch’s faith pleased God: “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (v. 6). The world hadn’t seen anything like the great flood and yet Noah, “in holy fear built an ark to save his family” (v. 7) because he trusted in God. By faith Abraham followed God “even though he did not know where he was going” (v. 8). When we first put our trust in Jesus it is by faith. As we continue following Him and our faith is tested, we can remember how God came through for these men. Even when we don’t know the whys and how’s we can trust God with the outcome.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 9th of May, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Isaiah 43:1: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.” What a promise from God! Do not be afraid. Then we go to the New Testament, to 2 Timothy 1:7: ”For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Now the opposite of fear is faith. That's right. The Lord says in Mark 11:22 “Have faith in God”, not in anybody else, not even in yourself, in God! Many many times, the Lord, when he had prayed for the sick said, “Go in peace, your faith has made you well.” He said that to Bartimaeus, the blind man, in Mark 10:52: “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” We really need to put our eyes on Jesus and not on that fearful thing that is plaguing us at the moment. Do you know folks, do you remember Neil Armstrong? Who was Neil Armstrong, young people? Well, he was the Captain of the space shuttle Apollo 11. He was the first man ever to walk on the face of the moon. Go out tonight and have a look at that moon. He walked on top of that moon. His famous quotation was, ”That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.” Do you know that 530 million viewers worldwide heard that around the world. That is an incredible step of faith, step into the unknown.Well, I want to tell you another little story. I've got three daughters and when they were small little girls, I would jump into the swimming pool and they would come and stand on the edge and I would say, ”Come on now. Jump in and I'll catch you.” And you know what little girls are like, they want to jump in but they're too scared. Then they are standing on the spot and their little feet are going up and down and they are holding their hands and they are saying, ”Dad, I'm scared. I'm scared, Daddy.” I'd say, ”Don't be scared. Just watch me and jump and I'll catch you.” And then they would take one giant leap and jump into that pool and they would defeat fear.Today, maybe you are full of fear. You don't know what the future holds for you and the devil's telling you, “You're a failure, you'll never make it.” It's a lie I tell you, from the pit of hell. Just take that leap of faith into God's arms. He has promised you that you are His and He will keep you safe. Lord, I pray for my friend listening to this very message now, that You will give them faith the size of a mustard seed, that they can take a giant leap into Your arms today, and their problems and their situations will disappear. In Jesus name, amen.God bless you and have a wonderful day, Goodbye.

Twenty five years ago this summer, The Latimer Group CEO Dean Brenner thought he'd be in crunch time training for the Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He was sailing professionally and he and his wife quit their day jobs because they thought he had a shot. While their second place Olympic selection trial finish wasn't the outcome they'd hoped for, it led them on a journey to starting their own business, one that is thriving, and helping other teams achieve their goals. “One door closes, another door opens is the cliche,” said Brenner on the CBIA BizCast. Brenner and his wife, Emily, built their business around their strengths and what they believed in–the power of effective communication. Today, The Latimer Group employs 15 people and works with corporations around the world to provide training and coaching to people and teams on powerful and persuasive communication skills.

From Gabriela's bio: "In 2013 I was living in Mozambique as a diplomatic wife with a 5 year old gilr and working remotely on a succesful youth program that was originally devised to bring talented teenagers to the world economic forum. The organization that hosted the program was undergoing a deep redisign and despite the success of the program it was decided that the goals, international development through the work of youth, did not align with the organization's core mission. At that point it was clear that any professional pursue I might have would need to be something of my own creation. These were the years before remote working was normalised and the luxury of flexible remote working were not widely available. At the same time, my work which had focused on supporting the community development projects young people from our network wre implementing to tackle big issues had really changed my perspective of what a person with a passion for improving the world could do. I had met young people with devastating life stories who despite all odds, or perhaps, because of them, were truly changing for the better the lives of those around them. At that point I was convinced that I needed to find a way to continue this work and how crucial it was to support those young people who are actively working towards a fair, peaceful and sustainable world. This moment was profoundly meaningful because it really pushed me to pursue my sense of purpose. To work and have a career were always life goals of mine and being faced with the reality of having to move countries every for years made pursuing those goals really difficult. I was also deeply inspired by the young people I was working with, they opened up my eyes of how important it is to work on things you are deeply passionate about and believe in.. The realization that I could not rely on existing structures to align with my passions and professional goals was both daunting and liberating. It forced me to embrace the idea that I could, and should, carve out my own path—one that reflected my commitment to fostering meaningful change.I learned that meaningful work doesn't always fit into traditional molds and more often than not it might not be remunerated. It requires creativity, persistence, and the courage to take risks. This period of my life instilled in me the belief that creating something of value, even in uncertain circumstances, is worth pursuing. It was a lesson in adaptability, self-reliance, and persistence, which are values that continue to guide me today."Gabriela is a binational of Mexico and Switzerland, having lived in Georgia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Switzerland, and the United States. A Pushcart Prize recipient, some of her work has been published in: The Best American Poetry, The New York Times, Orion, The American Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, Ploughshares, and Prairie Schooner. What happens when you decide to chase a dream despite overwhelming self-doubt? Melanie O'Reilly-Ralictors faced this exact question when planning her first-ever motherhood summit. Her powerful story demonstrates that courage isn't the absence of fear—it's moving forward despite it.Melanie, founder of Mostly Under Control, describes herself as "not a risk-taker at all," yet found herself planning an ambitious in-person event for mothers seeking deeper connection. With a background in early childhood education and having pivoted her business multiple times as her family grew (including the surprise of twins!), she realized her expertise could create something truly meaningful for women beyond standard parenting advice. The journey wasn't smooth. Fears of financial loss, disappointing speakers, poor attendance, and potential embarrassment plagued her planning process. What pushed her through? A combination of mindset shifts, unwavering support from her husband, business coaching, and a simple yet powerful mantra: "Even Amazon started in someone's garage." This perspective transformed her thinking from "I've only sold four tickets" to "I've already sold four tickets!"Most valuable is Melanie's practical advice for anyone contemplating their own leap of faith. She emphasizes surrounding yourself with the right people—those who see possibilities rather than obstacles. Her strategy of finding different types of supporters (cheerleaders, challengers, and implementers) creates a balanced network that propels you forward. As she discovered, "Nobody really knows what they're doing" in business—we're all figuring it out as we go.Ready to take your own leap?
