Discover the once-overlooked story of Elizabeth Johnson Jr., the Salem witch trial victim finally exonerated after 330 years. At just 22, this young Andover woman was pressured into falsely confessing to witchcraft in 1692. She narrowly escaped execution when Governor Phips ended the Salem witch trials. However, she was unjustly left out of the 1711 mass exoneration that cleared many others' names. Our guest, podcast regular Mary Bingham, reveals Elizabeth's remarkable life through court records and family histories, including reading us the powerful petition for clemency submitted by Elizabeth at age 42. James Lewis Jr., affectionately known as Jlew ventured to Andover Massachusetts in the Fall of 2016 to better himself. As a basketball player, as a student and most importantly as an individual. Hailing from Mt. Holly, North Carolina, James comes from a family-oriented background with strong morals and electric hoops. Originally doubling as a football and basketball player, as he transitioned to High school Lewis focused on the latter. His 6'1 frame needed some filling out to say the least, but he had the mentality from day one. Bully Ball. James began morphing into a walking double- double while competing through nagging injuries. Every so often, it seemed to be something. His Senior year at Northside Christian he enjoyed to the tune of 16 points and 12 boards a game, but again missed many games with injuries. Despite having a litany of offers and interest, he bet on himself going prep. It was there where we would cross paths, and he would put together a magnificent 18/11 season. He lead a talented Andover team in scoring and helped gut out a big win over NEPSAC AA Worcester Academy. The fruits of his labor materialized in a scholarship to Chattanooga and a #78 ranking in all of New England(NERR). His Freshman season saw instant success, starting nearly every game for the Mocs. He transferred to Appalachian State, where after a redshirt season played 4 strong years. In 2021, the Mountaineers were victorious in the Sun Belt Conference and had a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Although he entertained a contract overseas, James opted for a job offer where he can utilize his degree in computer information systems. Lewis Jr. secured both a bachelor's and master's degree from Appalachian State. Recorded: 12.16.24

“We only live, only suspire/ Consumed by either fire or fire.”…are not lines from today's poem, but one gets the feeling Bradstreet understood their meaning as well as anyone could. Happy reading.Anne Bradstreet was born Anne Dudley in 1612 in Northamptonshire, England. She married Simon Bradstreet, a graduate of Cambridge University, at the age of sixteen. Two years later, Bradstreet, along with her husband and parents, immigrated to the American colonies with the Winthrop Puritan group, and the family settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. There, Bradstreet and her husband raised eight children, and she became one of the first poets to write English verse in the American colonies. It was during this time that Bradstreet penned many of the poems that would be taken to England by her brother-in-law, purportedly without her knowledge, and published in 1650 under the title The Tenth Muse, Lately Sprung Up in America. The Tenth Muse was the only collection of Bradstreet's poetry to appear during her lifetime. In 1644, the family moved to Andover, Massachusetts, where Bradstreet lived until her death in 1672. In 1678, the first American edition of The Tenth Muse was published posthumously and expanded as Several Poems Compiled with Great Wit and Learning. Bradstreet's most highly regarded work, a sequence of religious poems titled Contemplations, was not published until the middle of the nineteenth century.-bio via Academy of American Poets Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Today's guest, Andrea Schwanbeck, is all too familiar with that inner dialogue. She engaged with it for years, waiting and waiting for the right time to dive into the unknown. But when a COVID layoff blindsided her, Andrea was left with no choice but to finally go all in on herself, even if it meant she had to pay a premium for health insurance as a Type 1 diabetic. In this week's conversation from Brass Tacks Photography in Portsmouth, and in celebration of Diabetes Awareness Month, my friend Andrea joins me to discuss: Andrea's start in photography (00:00) Diabetes diagnosis (06:36) Andrea's career prior to Brass Tacks (15:32) Wedding photography (23:15) A fun show announcement! (26:14) An unforgettable story (27:32) Our relationships with T1 Diabetes (31:19) Opening the Brass Tacks Studio in Portsmouth (46:50) Building a brand (51:21) What's your mission? (55:25) Andrea Schwanbeck is the owner of Brass Tacks Photography, a studio located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Originally from Andover, Mass., Andrea graduated from Bentley University with a degree in finance. Before pursuing a full-time career in luxury wedding photography, Andrea worked in radio advertising and jigsaw puzzle licensing, among other things. A former collegiate swimmer, Andrea is also a proud Type 1 diabetic. To find out more about Andrea's services, please visit BrassTacksPhotography.com or @brasstacksphotography on Instagram. From Amy: I have been a fan of Linda's gorgeous imagery ever since I met her in an online writing forum. At the time, we were both publishing our books with birds on the cover. The thing about poetry is, sometimes, especially at a moment like now—one week out from pivotal presidential elections in the United States—where the rhetoric has gotten QUITE LOUD, and it's already been a LOUD nearly-decade, our nervous systems need a break. We need soothing words that speak to our humanity. And so this episode is intentionally timed for right now... Beyond that, I love talking with Linda about how she works her magic, and I suspect you will love to hear what she says too.Linda Flaherty Haltmaier is an award-winning author and the Poet Laureate Emeritus of Andover, MA. Named the winner of the Robert Frost Poetry Prize, she is known for her “sensational imagery, her deft ear for the music of language, and her emotional sonar for sounding the depths of love (and anger).” Her new collection, Shadows Set to Burn, was recently honored with the 2024 International Book Award for Narrative Poetry. Her debut collection, Rolling up the Sky, claimed the Homebound Publications Poetry Prize and her follow-up, To the Left of the Sun, was the winner of the American Bookfest Award for Poetry. Additional accolades include winning the JuxtaProse Poetry Prize and the Palm Beach Poetry Festival Competition, as well as Finalist honors for the Princemere Poetry Prize, the New Millennium Award for Poetry, the Joy Bale Boone Poetry Prize, the Tucson Festival of the Book Literary Award, and more. Nominated for four Pushcart Prizes, Linda's work has been featured widely in journals and anthologies. A graduate of Harvard, Linda leads poetry workshops, gives readings, and promotes poetry on the North Shore of Boston where she lives with her husband and daughter.https://www.instagram.com/linda.thepoet/Buy Linda's book here & write a review Amy Hallberg is the author of Tiny Altars: A Midlife Revival and German Awakening: Tales from an American Life.
