In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Penny Burke, Director of WhereTo Research, shares her inspiring journey of growing the company to $12 million in revenue and leading it through a successful merger with a global firm. She highlights the importance of strong people skills, strategic thinking, and staying passionate about business. Penny also reflects on her early days in advertising and how those experiences shaped her leadership style. This episode offers valuable insights into sustainable growth, effective leadership, and staying true to your values in the business world. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Penny Burke, one of the hardest things in growing a small business is managing time, especially balancing business development ("hunting") with project delivery ("cooking and eating"). She explains that in a project-based business, it's challenging to constantly juggle winning new work while also delivering high-quality outcomes. Additionally, she emphasizes that people management — hiring the right team and dealing with performance issues—is another tough but crucial aspect of sustainable growth. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Penny Burke's favorite business book that has helped her the most is "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. She considers it a classic and values its timeless insights on building strong relationships and effective communication—key skills in both leadership and business growth. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Penny Burke does not recommend any specific podcasts or online learning tools to help grow a small business. She mentions that her husband uses such resources more than she does, and she personally prefers listening to music during her downtime instead of engaging with podcasts or similar tools. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Penny Burke emphasizes the importance of market mapping as a methodology rather than a specific tool. She recommends identifying where your business can play, where it can win, and where you can build your fame. This market-focused thinking helps small businesses define their niche and develop a strong positioning strategy, which is critical for growth. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Penny Burke's advice to herself on day one of starting out in business is: "Just be good. Don't worry about size. Just whatever it is that you're going to do, do it really, really, really well." This highlights her focus on quality and excellence over rapid growth. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Don't miss out on this opportunity to take your small business to new heights! Enjoyed the podcast? Discover how developing a flexible leadership mindset can transform your effectiveness as a woman executive. Our exclusive interview with Kevin Eikenberry, author of "Flexible Leadership," reveals powerful strategies for women leaders navigating today's complex business landscape. Why Women Executives Need a Flexible Leadership Mindset In today's rapidly evolving business environment, a flexible leadership mindset isn't just beneficial—it's essential for women executives who want to maximize their impact. According to McKinsey's 2024 Women in the Workplace report, women now hold 29% of C-suite positions, up from just 17% in 2015, yet the path to gender parity in senior leadership still extends decades into the future. For women executives facing unique challenges, developing flexibility in leadership approach provides a powerful advantage. A flexible leadership mindset allows women leaders to navigate complex situations while staying authentic to their core values. Defining the Flexible Leadership Mindset for Women Executives What exactly constitutes a flexible leadership mindset? According to Kevin Eikenberry, it means maintaining consistency in your core values while adapting your approach based on circumstances: "Flexible leadership means being consistent in our what and our why—our principles, values, and purpose—but flexible in our how," explains Eikenberry. "Like a mature tree that's firmly rooted yet bends with the wind, women executives with a flexible leadership mindset maintain their foundation while adapting their approach." The hallmark of this mindset is recognizing when "it depends" is the appropriate answer—and then thoughtfully considering what factors it depends on before determining how to proceed. About Kevin Eikenberry – Flexible Leadership Author Kevin Eikenberry is the author of over 20 books, including his latest, 'Flexible Leadership: Navigating Uncertainty and Leading with Confidence.' As the founder of the Kevin Eikenberry Group, he's advised leaders at organizations worldwide and created transformative leadership programs like the Remarkable Masterclass. The Business Cost of Inflexible Leadership for Women Executives Women executives who lack a flexible leadership mindset often find themselves locked into rigid approaches with statements like "that's just how I lead" or "they'll have to get used to it." This inflexibility creates significant limitations: Forces one approach onto diverse situations requiring different solutions Creates an identity barrier that's difficult to overcome Reduces opportunities for innovation and team development Dramatically lowers the odds of success in complex environments Reinforces potential gender stereotypes rather than transcending them Research indicates that companies with women in leadership positions are 30% more likely to outperform others—suggesting that when women executives leverage flexible approaches, organizations benefit. The Flexible Leadership Framework for Women Executives To help women executives develop a flexible leadership mindset, Eikenberry introduces the Cynefin Framework (pronounced kuh-NEV-in) as a tool for making sense of different leadership situations: 1. Clear Contexts for Women Executives Situations where cause and effect are obvious, best practices exist, and processes are established. Traditional leadership approaches often work well here. 2. Complicated Contexts for Women Executives Scenarios requiring expertise but where systems remain fairly ordered. Women executives benefit from gathering diverse perspectives before making decisions. 3. Complex Contexts for Women Executives The most common leadership environment today—where interconnected factors create unpredictability. Women executives thrive here by testing approaches, learning quickly, and adapting. 4. Chaotic Contexts for Women Executives Rare crisis situations requiring immediate action. Women executives need to act decisively to stabilize the situation before transit...

Trump also said he'd launch the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. The commission, led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, intends to cut government waste and make it work more effectively. However, there is also big economic news, as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed that inflation continues to tick up, prompting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to say they will be "cautious" with future rate cuts. In this episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss sits down with Bret Davis, a leader who has seen it all—from the world of professional sports to rising through the ranks in the medical field. Bret shares how growing up as the son of an NFL coach shaped his unique perspective on leadership, motivation, and handling pressure. From observing legendary figures like Don Shula and Bill Cowher, to developing his own leadership style, Bret's experiences culminated in his Amazon #1 best-selling self-help book, Bretisms. Throughout the episode, Bret and Chuck explore how leadership is not just about victories, but about dealing with adversity and how vulnerability can actually be a sign of strength. Bret shares his “Bretisms”—insights drawn from a lifetime of experience in high-stress environments, designed to help people reduce anxiety and build confidence in everyday life. Key Takeaways from Bret's Journey: Growing up in an NFL family taught Bret invaluable lessons about leadership, adaptability, and handling pressure. Moving every couple of years for his dad's career exposed him to different cultures, teaching him how to fit in and stand out as a leader. One of Bret's key leadership principles is “Take the blame, shed the credit”. Great leaders, he notes, are quick to give credit to others while taking responsibility for failures. Bret also emphasizes the importance of vulnerability in leadership. In high-pressure environments, it's crucial to open up and lean on your support system rather than trying to be “bulletproof.” Bretisms and Their Impact Bret's book, Bretisms, outlines 30 life principles that can help reduce anxiety and build confidence. One of his most impactful sayings is, “You can't trip over what's behind you”—a reminder to let go of past failures and focus on moving forward. Through real-life examples from his childhood in the NFL, Bret demonstrates how letting go of perfectionism and embracing failure can lead to personal and professional growth. What's Coming Next? Chuck reflects on how Bret's perspective on failure has inspired him to rethink his own approach to perfectionism. He challenges listeners to adopt the mindset that failure is okay, as long as you're learning and growing from it. Bret's stories of watching NFL players handle adversity off the field provide listeners with a behind-the-scenes look at the mental toughness it takes to succeed in high-pressure environments—whether in sports, business, or everyday life. Connect with Bret and Get the Book If you're ready to dive deeper into Bret's lessons on leadership and life, check out his book, Bretisms, available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
