In this episode of The Grassroots Show on the EquiRatings Eventing Podcast, Sam Watson returns to the mic to join Nicole Brown for a brilliantly practical and mindset-focused deep dive into four of the most common mistakes riders make across all three phases of eventing. From the traps of trying too hard to misunderstanding the true role of rider responsibility, Sam shares hard-earned wisdom, hilarious analogies, and honest advice you can apply at any level. Whether you're trotting down the centreline or tackling a big cross-country track, this one is packed with insight. Episode Highlights: Why "trying harder" isn't the answer: Success often comes from calm, consistent, simple habits — not more effort in the saddle. Dressage: Focus on the process, not the shape: The "one-handed riding rule", the myth of being on the bit, and the trap of chasing outcomes. Show Jumping: Control what you can: You can't control your eye for a stride — but you can control speed, rhythm, softness, and the setup. Cross Country: Stay in your lane: Riders have four jobs: straightness, speed, softness, and staying on. The rest is up to the horse. Loose jumping, roast dinners, and emotional chaos: Sam makes it relatable with real-life parallels — including why preparing a Sunday roast has a lot in common with a successful eventing round. Guest Info: Sam Watson: Irish international event rider, EquiRatings co-founder, and long-time 'friend' of the podcast. Presented by Foran Equine, part of the Connolly's RED MILLS family. James Connolly was a socialist whose role in the 1916 Easter Uprising in Dublin made him a key figure in Ireland's national revolution. But he was also a major theorist, one of the few socialists of his day to link working class struggles with the fight for national liberation. Paddy Gibson discusses the importance of a new book about him, The Lost and Early Writings of James Connolly, 1889-1898, by Conor McCabe. Read more about Connolly. Find out more about Solidarity. This talk was delivered at a Solidarity meeting on 1 May 2025.
Grady Connolly, a Gen Z Catholic influencer and digital strategist, shares key principles for discerning how to use social media well—especially when representing the Church. Drawing from his experience managing multiple social platforms for content creators and apostolates, Grady makes a bold claim: if influencers and digital missionaries aren't Christ-focused, they shouldn't be doing the work at all. In this episode, he unpacks the heart behind authentic digital ministry, tells the story of how he got started, and explains why everyone online has the power to influence others in ways they may never realize. We would love it if you could leave a written review on Apple and share with your friends! Editing provided by Forte Catholic (https://www.fortecatholic.com/)
The likely successor to the late Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., hopes to continue his former boss's commitment to federal IT reform if elected to Congress, while also gearing up to build his own legacy in the era of DOGE. Democrat James Walkinshaw told FedScoop in an interview last week that carrying on Connolly's federal IT advocacy is especially important to him as widespread workforce and program cuts present new challenges for the government's IT staff and related initiatives. While issues like IT modernization and procurement might “become less and less sexy by the day” amid other controversies in Washington, Walkinshaw said he is a “believer” that Congress should keep its foot on the pedal in this space. Walkinshaw, who served as Connolly's chief of staff for 11 years, is vying for Virginia's 11th congressional seat this fall to succeed the late congressman following his death from cancer in May. He currently serves on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. During the interview with FedScoop, Walkinshaw shared his thoughts on the lasting impacts of DOGE, his concerns with agency adoption of AI and his policy goals, if elected. The IRS has lost a quarter of its workforce since the beginning of the Trump administration, including thousands from the tax agency's IT business unit, according to newly released watchdog data. A snapshot report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration found that more than 25,000 IRS employees either took the deferred resignation offer, retired or were separated from the agency in another way, while nearly 300 staffers were terminated via reduction-in-force actions. Combined, those departures represent 25% of the agency's workforce, which has downsized from roughly 103,000 staffers to 77,428 as of May. According to TIGTA, the IRS's IT business unit has lost 25% of its staffers over the same period, leaving the division with just over 2,100 employees. The IT management job series across agency units is down 23%, per the report. TIGTA also confirmed previous FedScoop reporting on the IRS's move in late March to place nearly 50 IT executives on administrative leave. Among those employees, 26 eventually departed via Treasury Department incentive offerings, while another 22 are still on admin leave, per the watchdog. Basilicas are churches in the Catholic Church that receive the honorific title by the pope. There are four major basilicas in Rome and the others worldwide are minor basilicas. Grady Connolly, founder of Social Thomist, joins this episode of On Mission with Chris Pierno, Sarah Scalfaro, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. to share his experiences taking pilgrimages around the United States to visit all 93 minor basilicas. The Romans used basilicas as a gathering place and the seat of the local ruling official. After Christianity was legalized, the early Christians gathered in the basilicas for Mass and Sacraments. Today, the Pope is responsible for declaring a church a basilica, which distinguishes the church from others as a particular place of pilgrimage, sacraments, and liturgical beauty. Grady Connolly has visited over 60 of the basilicas in the US and plans to visit all of the basilicas and document his findings in an upcoming book. In this gripping episode of Gangland Wire, retired Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit detective Gary Jenkins unravels one of the most damning scandals in FBI history—a chilling story of corruption, betrayal, and a sanctioned murder that would stain the Bureau's legacy for decades. Gary examines the sinister role played by FBI agent H. Paul Rico in the 1965 murder of Teddy Deegan. You'll hear how, back in October 1964, Rico learned Deegan had been marked for a mob hit—yet the Bureau did nothing. Why? Because the killers were protected informants. Gary breaks down how the FBI built its case on the false testimony of mob informant Joe Barboza. Instead of stopping the murder plot, the Bureau sat on exculpatory evidence and let Barboza's lies send Louis Greco, Henry Tamaleo, Peter Limone, and Joe Salvati to prison—two of them to death row. The FBI's Informant Obsession: The Bureau's relentless protection of violent informants like Barboza and Vincent “Jimmy the Bear” Flemmi reveals how an obsession with “winning” overshadowed basic justice. The Justice Department's own admission in 2000 that they knew the real killers exposes just how far the corruption ran. From Cover-Up to Vindication: Follow the twisted timeline of the Deegan murder, the courtroom betrayals, and the decades-long fight to clear the names of the wrongfully convicted. Gary explores the human cost of a system that chose loyalty to informants over the truth. Why This Story Matters: This episode forces listeners to confront a haunting truth: when law enforcement trades integrity for convenience, innocent lives pay the price. Gary challenges you to rethink the myth of the Bureau's infallibility—and to remember the names of the men who spent their lives behind bars for a crime they didn't commit. Transcript [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretappers out there, good to be back here in the studio. This is Gary Jenkins, former Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit detective. I've seen a lot of things in my life, and I just heard something in that interview I just did with Detective Mike Huff from Tulsa that I had never heard before. [0:18] I mean, I've heard a lot of corruption things, but this one, it just went beyond the pale, especially there at the end where he said that this H. Paul Rico asked him about his kids and how old his kids were. That was like, you know, and I, you know, I talked with that guy long enough to know that he wasn't lying. You know, he wasn't making that up. That was, it was just beyond the pale, if you ask me. But today's episode is going to be a little bit more about H. Paul Rico and a dark chapter in the FBI history. Now, this is before John Connolly and the Whitey Bulger cover-up and all that. H. Paul Rico was the agent that really broke in Connolly, I think, and taught him the ropes. He was a slick FBI agent that had all the informants, that always had the inside track on everything, knew where the deals were. And so let's talk a little more about this one incident that we glossed over in that interview with Mike Huff about the murder of the Roger Wheeler down in Tulsa at the golf course, the Southern Hills Golf Tournament. [1:30] And it was all over control of Jai alai, all the money that came out of Jai alai. This thing, it just, it was a web of deceit that reached into the highest levels of federal law enforcement, as you could tell from what Mr. Huff was saying. [1:44] And so I'm going to tell you the story of t...

I first became aware of today's guest when I saw a clip of her speaking in the Seanad last week. The clip began with Senator Nicole Ryan, who was elected to the Seanad in February, saying that sometimes people forget that before people become politicians they're people with lives who have experiences that shape how they see the world, and it was her personal experience which led her to put forward the amendment that was being discussed that day. The proposed amendment was to the existing Domestic Violence Bill, and it suggested that the presence of children in cases of domestic violence should be considered an aggravating factor when it came to sentencing. She outlined her own experience in the Seanad, and I immediately wanted to know more. Thankfully, she found time to speak to me this week, and today I'm bringing you that conversation.CW: domestic violence, drug related death and pregnancy lossTo support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here.Join us in Connolly's of Leap on July 17th! Lauren Connolly is a person I relate to so much. She had me as a guest on her podcast Wildly Unplug, because we found out that we both recharge by being outside. Lauren has a very personal story about burnout, and how turning to nature brought her the fulfillment she was needing. She is an artist; she paints and is a photographer, a podcaster, and now she's added Author to the list of accomplishments! Her book is called Wildly Unplug, just like the podcast. She says about her book: "Wildly Unplug — A Creative Guide to Reconnecting with Nature, which offers inspiration, journaling prompts, and simple ways to unplug from the digital world and reconnect with what truly matters. It's a journey of overcoming burnout by reconnecting with nature through art, nature journaling, and conservation work. How slowing down to observe and create deepens our connection to the natural world and becomes a powerful tool for healing."Lauren's message she hopes you'll take away: "You don't have to move off-grid or grow all your own food to reconnect with the natural world. Small, intentional acts—like picking up a paintbrush, journaling your observations, or simply sitting quietly outside—can ground you, reconnect you to the land, and remind you that you're part of nature, not separate from it."You can find Lauren's work on her website: https://wilddevelopmentsstudio.com/She's also on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wilddevelopmentsstudio/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) “They told me I'd never make it in recruitment.”Jason Connolly's career started with magic tricks and ended in million-pound billing months—but only after surviving a toxic police department, a mountain of self-doubt, and a manager who swore he'd fail.In this raw and riveting conversation, Jason sits down with Susanna and Tiarna to talk about the truth behind career pivots, burnout, and what it really takes to succeed in legal recruitment. From busking in Covent Garden to founding one of the UK's most people-focused recruitment firms, Jason proves that resilience, mentorship, and a little unfiltered honesty can change everything. If you've ever questioned your path or been underestimated, this episode is for you.Must-Hear Insights and Key MomentsFrom Magic to the Met – Jason shares his unconventional beginnings as a magician and Virgin Atlantic crew member, and how a random police application changed the course of his life. Why the Police Almost Broke Him – Jason opens up about the trauma, institutional dysfunction, and discrimination he faced during his time as a police officer—and how it nearly cost him his self-worth.The Recruitment Rebuild – After leaving the force, Jason reveals how self-study, podcast binging, and a refusal to quit helped him go from billing zero to becoming the top recruiter in his agency. The Birth of JMC Legal – Jason shares the real story behind starting his firm, mentoring trainees to MD level, and the painful lessons learned from hiring mistakes and toxic management cultures.Feedback, Pressure, and Real Talk – The trio dives into why feedback is non-negotiable, how to lead without ego, and the “pressure cooker” reality of recruitment culture—and how to survive it.Words of Wisdom: Standout Quotes from This Episode“The worst thing you can say to me is, ‘You can't do it.' That's my fuel.” – Jason Connolly“I didn't need recruitment to save me—I needed it to test me.” – Jason Connolly“I don't care what your degree says. If you've got grit, I'll teach you how to bill a million.” – Jason Connolly“The recruiter's opinion doesn't matter. It's about understanding what the candidate really wants.” – Jason Connolly“Feedback isn't an insult. It's a gift. But only if you're brave enough to take it.” – Susanna Gray“It's not about KPIs. It's about mentoring people into the version of themselves they don't believe in yet.” – Jason Connolly“Sometimes the most powerful thing a recruiter can do is hold up a mirror.” – Tiarna McCormack“You don't need a script—you need emotional intelligence.” – Susanna Gray“Success is being unhinged in your pursuit, but grounded in your values.” – Jason Connolly“Legal recruitment didn't need more ex-lawyers. It needed more heart.” – Jason ConnollyFollow The Counter Offer:Susanna's LinkedInTiarna's LinkedInLinkedIn PodcastInstagramTikTok

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 12, cock fighting is the featured crime. This is Detective Connolly Gets Down ‘n' Dirty by Jack WolffDELIBERATIONDetective Connolly is up to his eyebrows in another bird-brained investigation. As always, he needs our help if he's going to catch Picante and earn his supper. Here are the places rattling through Connolly's brain where Picante could be hiding:His house, because a home is a castleThe airstrip, because it's bigThe chicken coop, because Conquistador needs his PapaAbout CockfightingCockfighting is an ancient bloodsport. It was believed to have originated in southeast Asia and migrated east. The Persians were believed to have introduced it to the Greeks, where it later spread into Rome. Depicts of cockfighting decorated pottery and other artworks, showing it to be a normal part of life. Numerous sketches and painting depict cockfighting events in England in the 1700s and 1800s. The sport migrated to the US. Over the 20th century, cockfighting was outlawed in many countries but now all. In Colombia, Cuba, Haiti and others, cockfighting is considered part of the cultural heritage and identity. Although legal, many of these regulate the sport. Today is World Refugee Day so I thought it would be useful to catch up with someone who works with refugees every day, to remind ourselves of what leads someone to become a refugee and how we can best support them. Amina Abdulla is Regional Director for the Horn of Africa with Concern, and I really enjoyed learning about her work, as well as what keeps her going when funding is sinking and the work is tough. To support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here.Join us in Connolly's of Leap on July 17th!
