The Towards a More Perfect Union radio show wants to continue to explore national issues but also bring them into a state level and local level point of discussion. Michael Walker-Jones and I got to sit recently to explore out loud some of the ways that could work. It seems like a natural fit. I generally focus on what matters here in Franklin and given the political climate and trends, some of those national issues will have an impact here. Maybe not the same as elsewhere but if there will be an impact, Franklin needs to be aware. While our conversation covers a broad range of topics, we start by introducing Michael to my Franklin listeners, in case you are not aware of his background. We are also looking for your input on what we might call this series of conversations. Something simpler than “Towards a More Perfect Union meets Franklin Matters” (or vice versa). The recording runs about 51 minutes--------------Toward a More Perfect Union audio episodes can be found -> https://more-perfect-union.captivate.fm As they move to do more video episodes, they also can be found on Franklin TV's All Access YouTube page -> https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbAODFjFPJ0wfMIr07hSTgQeTpTCghG0I Michael Walker Jones's LinkedIn profile -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-walker-jones-ed-d-136a74112/ --------------We are now producing this in collaboration with Franklin.TV and Franklin Public Radio (wfpr.fm) or 102.9 on the Franklin area radio dial. This session of the radio show shares the audio recording of the Economic Development Subcommittee meeting on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 in the Council Chambers. All 4 members were present and participated in the last session of this elected term of office. Quick recap:Multiple motions were made and approved to finalize the meeting minutes that were in some cases back to 2021. One amendment was made for one set to correct the name spelling for a couple of participants. Otherwise, all were approved as submitted with a 4-0 vote.Multiple citizens made comments, many to thank them for their service and accomplishments, a couple to remind of work to be done next term, on the friendly 40b process, and the development of a Franklin specific 40b affordable unit calculation. (The State calculation is misleading on the number of affordable units in the community as it includes all of the units in an apartment complex when on a small number of them as actually affordable.)The members reflected on their accomplishments, and Councilor Frongillo also included his 'wish list' of things remaining to be tackled.Motion to adjourn, passes 4-0The recording of the meeting runs about 33 minutes. --------------Franklin TV video is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxKeNgzEVNs Agenda document -> https://www.franklinma.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_10292025-1964 My full set of notes in one PDF file -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ktlHqEH1XRueA_YECKnUATY0QS7-FwV1/view?usp=drive_link --------------We are now producing this in collaboration with Franklin.TV and Franklin Public Radio (wfpr.fm) or 102.9 on the Franklin area radio dial. This story comes with trigger warning about domestic violence with an emphasis on physical violence. This is part one of two. This was recorded when we rejoined Michael Clark for another chat about all he has experienced. Michael is the founder and Executive Director of the Ananias Foundation. This is an organization committed to ending domestic violence at its roots by working with those who have caused harm. Michael has supported thousands of individuals seeking to break free from abusive behavior by offering guidance and hope for change. What makes Michael Clark so distinct? He is a former domestic violence offender himself. He has transformed himself, and now he writes, speaks, and leads from his hard-earned perspective. This story will tell us about his journey, his books, and more. This story comes with trigger warning about domestic violence with an emphasis on physical violence. This is part two of two. NC State had opportunities late, but couldn't come through in any phase of the game in a 45-33 loss at Duke. The Wolfpack (3-1, 1-1 ACC) finished with four turnovers, allowed 45 total points and had more issues on special teams in its first loss of the year. Cory Smith and Michael Clark take a look back at the Wolfpack's issues in all three phases, Terrell Anderson's huge performance, CJ Bailey's up-and-down night, the defense continuing to get gashed for explosive plays and where the Pack must improve before facing Virginia Tech. Behind three passing touchdowns from CJ Bailey, a career night from Hollywood Smothers and a stifling second half from the Wolfpack's defense, NC State found a way to pull out a 34-24 win over Wake Forest on the road. The Pack now sits at 3-0 (1-0 ACC) on the season, with the last two coming after trailing at halftime one quarter of the way through the year. Cory Smith and Michael Clark take a look back on the comeback win for the Wolfpack, CJ Bailey's performance, Justin Joly touching pay dirt twice, Hollywood Smothers' continued dominance and the Pack's second-half defensive adjustments. NC State once again needed a fourth-quarter stop to seal a home win, but got just that with Cian Slone's interception in a 35-31 win over Virginia. The Wolfpack notched five total touchdowns with CJ Bailey accounting for three -- two on the ground, one to Noah Rogers -- while Hollywood Smothers had the other two on the ground. Cory Smith and Michael Clark discuss the Wolfpack's nail-biting win, Bailey's continued dominance as a passer and runner, Smothers' massive outing and the defense that bent, but didn't ultimately break against the Hoos. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Ever wondered why so many personal trainers struggle despite having "gold standard" certifications? This eye-opening exploration pulls back the curtain on the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) - the fitness industry's equivalent of McDonald's.Founded in 1987 by Dr. Robert Goldman and developed by respected professionals like Dr. Michael Clark, NASM once represented cutting-edge fitness education. Today, after multiple corporate acquisitions (Ascend Learning in 2009, then Blackstone in 2017), it's become a marketing powerhouse with 1.5 million certified trainers worldwide. But quantity doesn't always equal quality. We dive deep into NASM's transformation from respected education provider to corporate giant, examining both its strengths (global recognition, gym employment opportunities) and critical limitations. The certification offers minimal business training, relies on outdated biomechanical concepts like upper cross syndrome (largely debunked by physical therapists), and features questionable programming recommendations. Most troublingly, newly certified trainers face a harsh reality: $9-12 per half-hour pay at big box gyms while clients are charged $50+, demanding split shifts, and pressure to sell supplements they may not believe in. It's no wonder 90% of trainers quit within their first year.True success in fitness requires more than passing a multiple-choice test. Elite trainers need mentorship, hands-on experience, business acumen, and professional networks – elements textbook certifications rarely provide. Whether you're considering becoming a trainer or looking to level up your career, understanding the limitations of standard certifications is crucial to avoiding the common pitfalls of the fitness industry.Ready to move beyond basic certifications?
