Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin are DJs, founders of the parties Mister Saturday Night, Mister Sunday, and Planetarium and the Mister Saturday Night record label, as well as New York City nightclub Nowadays. In part two of our interview, we dive deep about opening and running Nowadays, the NYC underground scene at the moment, and how cultural and political shifts impact the underground. If you're interested in soundsystems, nightclub design, Brooklyn after dark and/or what it takes to run a club, this episode is for you. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin have spent the last 20 years helping shape NYC nightlife but these days, they're best known as the owners of Nowadays in Ridgewood, Queens, which is, in many people's estimation, the best club in New York right now. Justin and Eamon are also DJs, run the record label, and are the hosts and residents of long-running parties Mister Saturday Night, Mister Sunday, and an ambient chill-out affair called Planetarium. In part one of this two-parter, we talk to the duo about Mister Saturday Night's 15-year anniversary, the do's and don'ts of fog, wild times at Motherfucker, DIY spaces, post-9/11 NYC and the parties, locations and music that shaped all their endeavors. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.
Soul Summit is a New York institution. The DJ trio have been putting on a summer festival in Brooklyn's Fort Greene park for well over a decade now, and those gatherings have become a yearly house music pilgrimage for fans from all over the Five Boroughs. The party embodies the ethos of house music: free for everyone, open to families both blood and chosen, a place where everyone is welcome to groove (or just relax) to uplifting, old-school dance music with inspiring lyrics and bumping basslines. Sadiq Bellamy, Tabu and Jeff Mendoza have created something truly special, and more and more lately, they've been spreading their gospel outside the park, too. They've become residents at Nowadays, where this RA Podcast was recorded as part of a Mister Sunday party. It was also released as part of the Mister Saturday Night's cassette box set to celebrate the party's 15th birthday. This one features an hour of the cassette's 90-minute runtime, plus an additional 20 minutes only available here. It captures this trio at their soulful best, letting vocal tracks play out long and leisurely with expert blends and gentle transitions. The feelings of warmth, love and welcome land with every kick drum and flow through every bassline. @soul-summit-music Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/918
The Monologues Podcast invites producers to mix an hour of their own productions. Follow our Bandcamp for our label releases at monologuesrecords.bandcamp.com . Coming soon: M76 - Athlete Whippet... For the last decade, Japanese producer Keita Sano has been putting out inventive house, disco and techno grooves on hot labels like Let's Play House, 1080p and Mister Saturday Night, always bringing fresh ideas and tough grooves to the table. Off the back of his superb new ‘Love Is Emotion' EP on Delusions Of Grandeur, we invited Okayama-based Sano-san to our podcast series where producers mix only their own material, and he's come up trumps with an hour of exclusive, unreleased material. From hard disco to funky acid workouts to bugged out broken beats, it's the sound of an endlessly creative artist at work. *How would you describe your sound?* Fat and smooth. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Everything around me. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* This is what my life means. Former military man and marching band member James Bangura is an artist who has roamed the world and picked up musical influences at every stop on the way. Be it drum & bass in Alabama, blog house in California or the rich house sound of New York, this Washington DC native is now distilling all those references into his own searing sounds. They have come on labels like Mister Saturday Night and can range from sauced out to brutally energetic. And the latter of those two is what defines his unrelenting mix for us. It is a hard hitting collision of raw, decaying textures, pummeling drums and stark, post industrial atmospheres that are thrillingly harsh. The rhythms roam from the fringes of techno to the heart of jungle and on to an icy but powerful minimalism that very much consumes your body. So strap in, cause this is one helluva ride.
Inspired by house, techno, hip hop, dubstep, indie rock, jazz and the rich history and present day music scene of New York City, Alex Burkat (@burkat) brings his own perspective to the decks and draws inspiration from everywhere. His first release EP, Shower Scene, was inspired by a night of dancing at one of the Mister Saturday Night parties, resulting in a release on their record label in March of 2013. Burkat released Tarot the same year, a 12" out now on Los Angeles-based label, 100% Silk, a four track compilation inspired by mysticism and global warming with a house-tinged sound. Since then, he has been busy releasing on such labels as Permanent Vacation, Third Ear Recordings, and the Nite Owl Diner. In addition to crafting fine-tuned electronic sounds, Burkat also runs his own parties series in Philadelphia, Ancient Puzzle Arts. From the artist: This mix was recorded briefly before the chaos of COVID-19. At the time, I was reflecting on some time spent in LA over the last two years, and a particularly incredible time seeing Eris Drew and Octo Octa in Philadelphia at Sanctuary City (shout out Elvin T and everyone involved), and wanted to connect some shared emotional motifs related to those experiences. I had a digital crate of about 100 songs I liked, did a one take jam, and this mix was the result. I personally like the energy of one-take-jam mixes, because I am over analytical about everything in life, so I need the zen of DJing to break from that pattern. Somewhere amidst the mean back streets of Philadelphia you might stumble upon Alex Burkat, producer, disc jockey and all round good guy. Across the last four years he has released music on a variety of labels which includes Mister Saturday Night, Permanent Vacation, 100% Silk and Third Ear Recordings. His sound is often aligned with what you might describe as more melodically inclined house and electronic music, his tracks as listenable upon a long walk as they are purpose built for the club. As a disc jockey his variation in sound is aspirational, this mix features tracks from Outkast, Atoms For Peace, Roman Flugel and many, many more. A moderately paced mix of eclecticism and sublime taste.
