The summer of 2020 was an explosive moment in America.  Not since the uprisings of the late 60's had we seen the country, en masse , light up in a wave of fiery protest. With a string of high profile vigilante and police killings, the tipping point for people to take to the streets and demand justice was the police murder caught on camera of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  As bystanders stood by shouting for law enforcement officers to release their deadly hold, kneeling on the neck of Floyd, his death became the catalyst for a movement to not just defund bloated police budgets, but to do away with them altogether.  Promises were made by certain municipalities, but not much has been done in major metropolitan areas to change law enforcement.    Did the Defund/Abolish movement do enough to get their demands met? Are we stuck in the era where hashtags and trending on social media are confused with true policy change?  With most of the country opening up, is this revolutionary moment gone? Can the activists that organized these radical protests pivot to electoral positions of power to enact real substantive change? We'll ask these questions and more   This is Revolution.   About Eamon Whalen: Contributed writing about music, culture and politics to publications including The Nation, Belt Magazine, The Outline, The FADER, Minnesota Reformer, Canada's National Observer, The Daily Dot, City Pages, contexts magazine of the American Sociological Association and Bandcamp Daily.   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. We had Eamon Sandwith of The Chats on for our most recent interview. We began the conversation with Eamon talking about touring and adjusting to playing in other countries. Not only does a traveling band have to get used to other time zones but also have to become familiar with different music scenes. We chatted about his upbringing and how punk stuck out to him at an early age even though it wasn't as popular in his area. When the band started in high school, one of the first songs was considered a “throwaway song for a school experiment, but it made its way on to the first EP and is still widely  played today.  Like so many bands out there, The Chats released an album as the pandemic started hitting the world. They had a whole tour prepared and were ready for a full roll out. But, Eamon admits, the album still did extremely well even with a pandemic happening, thanks to everyone's ability to play the songs from their home. Eamon believes the album "Get this in Ya" was the moment the band started to come into their own. Smoko began to blow up across the world when the band was fresh out of high school. Eamon talks about being young when their music started to get big. It was quick success, but still had some obstacles. Eamon says other bands who had been playing longer did not appreciate that they got big so young. He also discusses his songwriting process and talks about how he typically writes about everyday experiences. There's even a story about Iggy Pop and about how the band had to describe what Smoko and darts are. Check out the band below!
