Beyond thrilled to be introducing our next guest, Echo Juliet and this killer mix she cooked up- using her first love of percussion as the defining element of her sound. The DJ and producer swapped her classical music degree for Ableton and decks. A friendly, yet formidable force, her DJ sets journey through deep house, percussion-filled global electronic, and warm sounds which have seen her open for Bradley Zero, Tom VR, Nightmares on Wax, The Orb, Jeremy Sylvester and more. Receiving comparisons to Four Tet and Bonobo, her colourful productions dwell on the fringes of club music, leaning towards the leftfield. From high energy excitement to dreamy textures, she draws influence from broken-beat, deep house and classical percussion. Recently named one of DJ Mag's emerging artists to watch, her releases have also been featured in Bandcamp's Best Electronic list, played in legendary clubs such as Fabric, and supported by DJs including Axel Boman, Seb Wildblood, and BBC 6Music tastemakers Gilles Peterson, Nemone and Tom Ravenscroft. She has also featured on a compilation alongside electronic icons 808 State, and been remixed by Gold Panda. Radio credits have seen her guest hosting on NTS and mixes for Rinse FM and The Face Radio in New York, as well as hosting a radio series for promoter Soundcrash. Meanwhile, DJing has taken her from noted South-London party Rhythm Section and residencies for The Standard and Variations, to SXSW in Austin, We Out Here festival's second stage and playing to over 3,000 people at Dreamland Margate. Committed to creating a more inclusive music scene, she founded Future Proof for Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section label, has taught music production to women and non-binary folks for Saffron and is a director of DJ community Selextorhood.
Deep in the archives of the late 90s and early 00s Dutch underground, Piepotelli threads together some sublime progressive house and deep techno. @piepotelli Q. What sounds / feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix? A. I wanted to be in sync with MDC but also compile something personal. The sounds that emerge have inspired me a lot lately. They relate to a variety of styles, but also to emotions and energy. I truly feel related to the sometimes abstract form of expression music can be. I tried to be expressive in the progression, as only then the mix would make sense to me. The cohesion is noticeable through deepness all over, fused with wavy coatings, mysterious tints, and progressive elements, highlighted by synth, groove, and syndicate electronic magic. Somewhere late afternoon landing into the night would be the ideal time for a whirl, as it takes time to build but would be too much for my morning peace – I prefer worldy stuff to wake up the mind (s/o John Gomez on NTS!). I guess before going out for a dance suits well, since it's quite club-ready towards the end. Q. Are there any records in the mix that you were especially excited to share? what is it about these songs that resonate with you? Very much so! One that has been in my head for ages is The Hug Club – Round I Go (Morning Mix). Honestly, the whole EP kicks ass, but the B2 is on another level. I like several things about it. One, it's subtle. It smoothly builds and gently brings some beautiful chord/synth layers to take the lead and make it flow. Two, it's sensual, but not demanding. That elegance is exactly what sets this alleviating mood. Three, it's a B2. The track that doesn't scream for a listen. It's there for the curious. Four, have you seen this cover? We were talking artistic expression right? That's it right there. Take these 4 points together, and you see why it's such a standout. Q. Tell us about the evolution of your YT channel, where you've been uncovering hidden gems from the 90s / early 00s, largely from obscure NL house, techno and tribal / progressive producers and labels. Had you always suspected there might be a trove of deeper cuts hidden amongst the more popular Dutch hardstyle, trance and techno records of the time? It's funny that you mention that, because some of the quality deeper cuts originate from producers that came a long way from Trance, Hardcore and Gabber. If we take a step back, late 80s house music flew over by local DJs that felt inspired by what was going on in the US. That was for both the parties and the sound. The paradigm changed in Amsterdam as well. It had to withstand serious commotion by the crowd, but the driving forces around Club Roxy and Club iT eventually obtained their recognition. The local embracement paved the way for the evolution of many subgenres that followed. Of course music evolves globally, but it is the combination with local appreciation, local hubs, and local initiatives that gave it cultural body. It really deepened and refined what artists were able to produce. Such history gives so much color to when you are going through archives like record bins. To relate it to the YT channel, essentially what it does is making finds from the past available for listening. I think on there, you have a unique combination of archiving and curation. Archiving in the sense that it's not as polluted as other platforms, it is straight to the point and less ego-centric. Curation in the sense that you can post something unique and commit something that was not there yet, and bring it together on a channel. Now from history we can tell that the mid-late 90s and early 00s you mention were indeed fruitful in the region. That's how it doesn't surprise I come along the quality cuts you're referring to. There is still a lot to discover. Also a lot of garbage, but dig deep enough and you'll run into hidden treasures. Along the way you learn a lot about your musical taste. That's the fun part.

Your favourite DJ's favourite punk band are back, and they've brought the sweat with them. There was a Young Band from the Paradise Palms, Who played with such fury it rattled your arms, They grooved like the ESG, bit like The Slits, And drove Windmill Brixton completely to bits! “O come to our Party!” cried Bikini Body, “It's perfectly sweaty and pleasantly shoddy! The bassline is punching, the drumming is tight, And everyone's dancing till quarter to light!” So they packed up the Palms and they played BBC, And KEXP and Radio 6 and NTS and free, And the dancefloor said “Goodness!” and the basement said “More!” And nobody quite knew what a party was for. Bikini Body return with the Weirdest Party EP, their first release on Paradise Palms Records following two records on Optimo Music – a pairing that did a lot to define both their trajectory and their restless, hybrid sound. This new set pushes further into the territory they've made their own: the charged, uneasy space where dancefloor pressure and punk confrontation refuse to separate. Percussive, physical and wired with attitude, the tracks draw a lineage that runs from ESG and Liquid Liquid through Bush Tetras, The Slits and X-Ray Spex, with the remixes opening things out for club systems without sanding off a single rough edge. It's music that works equally hard in a sweaty basement and on a packed dancefloor – which, given a 13-date UK co-headline tour ending in a sold-out London show, a packed Windmill Brixton headline, and airplay across BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, KEXP and NTS, appears to be exactly where people are putting it. Weirdest Party EP is out on Paradise Palms Records on 22nd May 2026. Catch them live on our stage at Another Thought on 13th June.

This month we're on episode 83 and my guest is Berlin based DJ, producer, and subglow boss CCL. Even if you've never seen a @ccl-url DJ set, you've probably listened to one of their many, many mixtapes — the consummate dreamweaver, CCL's musical storytelling is unparalleled in its ingenuity. Unbound by genre, tempo, or style, and with a massive archive to back them up, CCL's mixtapes are a lesson in world-building and deep sonic imagination. Their T4T mixtape A Night At the Skull Discotheque, and their NTS series Invisible Cities, which transforms an imagined city into a musical journey, have become instant classics, a perfect extension of their DJing which also seeks to explore, experiment, and express. In this conversation, we delve into CCL's relationship to creativity, their commitment to pushing their own boundaries, and their pursuit of explosive imagination. ++ MUSIC CCL - "Plot Twist" (2024) CCL - "The Plot Thickens" ft. Live Work with Madeleine I'm Helpless! Part 2 of 3 Today, we are pleased to present the exciting conclusion of our work with Madeleine, a loving mother who fears that her eldest daughter might be in mortal danger during her year abroad. Last week, you heard about the T = Testing and E = Empathy phase of the live work with Madeleine, a mother feeling intense panic and helplessness and inadequacy because she fears that her daughter could be in grave danger of abduction and worse. This week, we will focus on A = Paradoxical Agenda Setting, using the Miracle Cure Question, Magic Button, Positive Reframing, and Magic Dial to see if we can melt away her resistance to change. You can see the Emotions table of the Daily Mood Log Madeleine during the Magic Dial portion of the session if you Click Here As you can see, she wanted to reduce her negative feelings somewhat, but thought she still wanted to keep them fairly elevated, since she still sensed that her daughter might be in real danger, and clearly did not want to abandon her. This is one of the significant refinements in TEAM CBT. First, we want to bring the patient's resistance to full conscious awareness. Second, we want patients to full grasp that their negative thoughts and feelings do NOT result from some "defect" or "mental disorder," but rather from what is most beautiful and awesome about them as human beings. After the Magic Button, David and Jill went on to the final, M = Methods portion of the TEAM session, using tools such as Identify and Explain the Distortions, the Double Standard Technique, and the Externalization of Voices, with the Acceptance Paradox, the Self-Defense Paradigm, and the CAT (Counter-Attack Technique). We will, of course, do numerous role reversals to see if we can get Madeleine to a "huge" victory over her many distorted thoughts. You can see the Daily Mood Log Madeleine prepared at the end of the session if you Click Here As you can see, the reductions in negative feelings were dramatic, but in several areas (anxiety, inadequacy, frustration and anger), Madeleine's negative feelings were still minimally elevated. That is one of the reasons we decided to schedule an additional session together several weeks later to see if we could intensify Madeleine's responses to her negative thoughts, and hopefully due some Cognitive Flooding to complete her "treatment." At the end of these show notes, you will find an email from Madeleine after the session that includes her end-of-session scores on the BMS and EOTS. You will also see comments submitted by many participants who attended the webinar live. This email below from Madeleine following the session shows her end of session scores on the Brief Mood Survey as well as the Evaluation of Therapy Session at the end of her session with Jill and David. Hi David, Yes, here are my BMS & ETS score totals after the extended session. Please let me know if you have any questions. A relapse prevention session would be nice; however, I hesitate to accept your offer as you all are so busy. Please know that I am practicing the PTs and keeping the NTs in check for now. Thank you again a million times over

#223. This year was simultaneously the best and worst of my life, and I need to talk about it before we close out 2025. Three of the four guys on NTS have sons either approaching puberty, in puberty, or teaching a masterclass in puberty. So that explains the title. Send us a textThe effects of protein restriction on metabolism, liver hormones, brain, and behavior.Episode Summary: Dr. Christopher Morrison talks about how animals sense and prioritize nutrients like protein, discussing defense mechanisms for essentials such as oxygen, water, sodium, and energy; the brain's role in detecting protein deprivation via signals like FGF21; trade-offs between growth, reproduction, and longevity under protein restriction; and reconciling high-protein diets for satiety and muscle maintenance with low-protein benefits for metabolic health and lifespan extension.About the guest: Christopher Morrison, PhD is a professor and researcher at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he has worked for over 22 years focusing on nutrition, metabolism, and chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes.Discussion Points:The body prioritizes nutrients hierarchically: oxygen and water first, then sodium, energy, and protein, with weaker defenses for carbs or fats.Animals develop specific appetites for deprived nutrients, like salt or protein, often through post-ingestive learning rather than just taste.Protein restriction (e.g., 5% vs. 20% in diets) increases food intake and energy expenditure in mice to maintain protein levels, even at the cost of extra calories.FGF21, a liver hormone, signals protein deprivation to the brain (via NTS region), driving protein-seeking behavior and metabolic changes; it's essential for low-protein responses.Protein restriction extends lifespan in lab animals by suppressing growth signals like IGF-1 and mTOR, but may impair immunity or wound healing in real-world conditions.High protein aids satiety, weight loss, and muscle building, but overconsumption may shorten lifespan; optimal intake depends on age, activity, and goals (e.g., not for pregnant or elderly). No one-size-fits-all for protein: mild restriction may benefit middle-aged sedentary people for health, while athletes need more; balance avoids excesses.Related content:M&M 106: Diet, Macronutrients, Micronutrients, Taste, Whole vs. Processed Food, Obesity & Weight Loss, Comparative Biology of Feeding Behavior | Stephen Simpson & David Raubenheimer*Not medical advice.Support the showAffiliates: Seed Oil Scout: Find restaurants with seed oil-free options, scan food products to see what they're hiding, with this easy-to-use mobile app. KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + electrolytes formulated for kidney health. Episode Summary: In this episode, Heather “Lucky” Penney talks to Lt. Gen. David Deptula, USAF (Ret.), Charles Galbreath, Todd “Sledge” Harmer, Anthony “Lazer” Lazarski, JV Venable, and Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell, USAF (Ret.) about the top defense issues this month in Washington, D.C. and beyond. Our team digs into what a new Chief of Staff of the Air Force will mean for the service and the broader defense environment. They also discuss the CCA's first flight, plus Gen. Adrian Spain's call for an increased focus on readiness in his new capacity as commander of Air Combat Command. We look at a broad array of spacepower developments—everything from the most recent Starship launch to the X-37B mission and NTS-3. Added to that, there are also a lot of issues going on with our partners and allies—quite a few are boosting their defense budgets, but some are calling into question buying U.S. systems. What does this mean for the defense ecosystem? We wrap looking at where the Sentinel Program is headed these days and consider the latest with B-21 and B-52 modernization efforts. A follow up to his 2024 mixtape, Illegal Generation Vol. 1, Lil Internet brings you Vol. 2 — a new hour of fresh “gencore,” which aired today on Mark Leckey's monthly NTS radio show. [https://www.nts.live/shows/mark-leckey] “Compared to Volume 1,” Lil Internet writes, “Volume 2 feels closer to a truly functional example of what AI generated music might offer outside of joke songs and the emulation of styles that already exist—it's also more deranged.” “Both, however, are made in the tradition of sample-based, breakbeat driven dance music,” Lil Internet points out, which is to say music that “has always been made using the latest technology and stolen data (uncleared samples).” In this sense, Gencore is part of the natural evolution of what music critic Simon Reynolds named the “hardcore continuum.” Could one even argue that the big AI companies — sampling everything we type, everything we upload, everything we do — follow the same protocol? Perhaps the “hardcore continuum” has expanded from something we listen to into something we are living through. The guys were back together and wanted a nice, focused episode. Of course, that means a question was asked, subjects were changed, tangents were had, and 90 minutes passed before answering that initial question. Also, they open with an -- ahem -- divisive topic. This week is a throwback. Brad, Dave, and Craig are in. And it's a tight 90-minute episode because Matt isn't. RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions. There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. You think you know dance music? Think again. Parrish's long-awaited debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations, the first of ten mixes this week. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's collaborative party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2020). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come back. On RA.1000, you'll hear Theo in his element. Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by image-driven marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride. On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. Theo, once again, proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records. @theoparrish @fabric @soundsignaturedetroit @crownruler Listen to all RA.1000 mixes, as well as the complete history of the RA Podcast, at 1000.ra.co
Normally, the guys would release a movie review as a "bonus" episode of NTS. But after seeing a film with the majesty and grandeur of "Malibu Express," they reconsidered. "I have had quite some reactions to the article [on their psychoanalyses]. I was also telling Mauro and my colleagues that out of quite a number of articles I've published on maybe more pressing issues in the field of cancer research, for example, brain tumor research that I've spent quite some time with, I think it's actually the article [on psychoanalysis] that probably prompted the most reactions, at least in my personal surroundings, and the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. So colleagues are very interested. They often ask questions about psychoanalysis, quite specifically, how it works, how it contributed, and also complemented the article in the sense that it was something that was quite outside of the box, so outside of the typical surgical publication.” - FV "How can we reach surgeons? How can we make this interesting and attractive for them to even consider? I think most surgeons will be very performance-driven people, and I think that it goes hand in hand that that type of person will seek ways to improve themselves, but probably more in a technical way. Let's say they want to get faster in their operations. They want to get more skillful. They want to do more complicated surgeries. So there's a lot about self improvement in that you exercise until you master something. And I think that analogy with sports was our way of saying, hey, you know, this is actually pretty cool. You can compare yourself to professional athletes, in terms of self improvement, and this is actually one way you can get there, how you can improve. At the same time, it was also important for us to acknowledge that it's not for everyone so we also mentioned alternatives, of course." - MV Episode Description: Mauro and Flavio begin by describing the encouragement they received from their father to pursue personal analysis "to explore our unconscious minds for a lighter life and less emotional baggage." They share their psychoanalytic journeys and give examples of how their greater capacity to reflect instead of react has led to improved surgical patient outcomes. They also describe collegial tensions that were more clearly addressed through their ability to authentically know how they felt. They recommend that like elite athletes who have sports psychologists to address obstacles to their performances, so might surgeons appreciate the utility of psychoanalysis and other measures to improve their clinical attunement. Mauro concludes "Everyone has their baggage - don't be afraid to look at it and to understand what's going on. It's worth it." Our Guests: Flavio Vasella, MD PhD, is a junior attending neurosurgeon at the University Hospital Zurich, with a clinical and research focus on neurosurgical oncology. He earned his PhD in Molecular Life Sciences at the University of Zurich, where his research explored genome editing strategies in primary brain tumors. His primary academic interests include translational and clinical neuro-oncology as well as surgical education. Mauro Vasella, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon with multiple years of clinical experience specializing in reconstructive surgery. He is affiliated with the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland and the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia and has held positions as a fellow and attending surgeon. His practice and research field focuses on regenerative-reconstructive surgery and burn injuries. Recommended Readings: FV - Paul Kalanithi – When Breath Becomes Air This memoir by a neurosurgeon-turned-patient is a poetic and piercing meditation on mortality, identity, and the transition from doctor to patient. It explores the tension between the analytical and emotional mind (somewhat paralleling the internal work of psychoanalysis) and offers profound insight into the humanity at the core of medical practice. Bill George – True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership This book presents a leadership philosophy rooted in self-inquiry, values, and life stories. True North emphasizes that effective leadership comes from understanding your life narrative and using that insight to lead with integrity and resilience. True North challenges leaders to cultivate authenticity by exploring their internal landscape. While the book focuses on leadership in a business context, it offers a compelling, practical perspective for medical professionals as well. Atul Gawande – Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science Gawande offers a candid look at the uncertainties, dilemmas, and emotional burdens of being a surgeon. His reflection on fallibility and decision-making underlines the importance of non-technical skills and the internal work required to become not just competent, but humanely attuned, in medicine. The impact of nontechnical skills on technical performance in surgery: a systematic review. Hull L, Arora S, Aggarwal R, Darzi A, Vincent C, Sevdalis N. J Am Coll Surg.2012 This systematic review analyzed 28 studies linking surgeons' non-technical skills—such as teamwork, situational awareness, and stress management to actual technical performance in the operating room. It found evidence that effective NTS positively affects outcomes, while fatigue and communication failures contribute to technical errors. MV - The Art of Loving – Erich Fromm Realizing the simple but somehow not always obvious fact that before being able to truly love someone, one must truly find themselves loveworthy. This implies and demands introspection, as well as forgiveness towards yourself and others. Outliers: The Story of Success – Malcolm Gladwell To master something, one must invest a substantial amount of time and dedication – this is not only true for technical skills, but also non-technical skills. Personal growth is only possible if you invest time, such as undergoing a psychoanalysis or similar. The Checklist Manifesto – Atul Gawande While the checklist itself is very technical, the way it was conceived and its effect was and still is rather non-technical. It is a question of putting your ego aside and truly focusing on areas which you can improve.
This week, Scott sat down with Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien and Foreign Policy Editors Daniel Byman and Dana Stuster to talk through the week's big news in Israel and Iran, including:“The Nuclear Option.” Israel crossed the rubicon late last week and took direct military action against Iran's nuclear weapons program, among other targets, in an aggressive unilateral military campaign that has only expanded in the ensuing days. Iran, meanwhile, has reciprocated with volleys of attacks against Israel, some of which are getting through the substantial missile defenses Israel (and the United States) have deployed. It's the Middle East war everyone has feared for more than a decade. How will it come to an end? And what will its ramifications be for the region?“Bibi Got Back.” Israel has threatened to take direct military action against Iran over its nuclear program multiple times over the past two decades but has always stopped short. Why did Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proceed this time? And what will the implications be for his government, which has been teetering on the edge of collapse? And for his relationship with President Trump, his once close ally who declined to back his decision to proceed?“Bye-Atollah.” While Israel's official target has been Iran's nuclear and military complexes, many observers suspect that their real goal is something else: regime change. And recent reports that Netanyahu proposed killing Iranian political and spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini—but relented after objections from the Trump administration—suggest they may be right. What might Iran look like if its current regime collapses? And will it help or hurt Israeli (and U.S.) security interests? In Object Lessons, Tyler sang the praises of online radio station NTS.Live and NTS Guides to all of your quirky and eclectic musical tastes. Scott didn't miss a beat with his throwback recommendation of Schoolhouse Rock song covers, with a particular fondness for Pavement's rendition of No More Kings.
