Send us a textPhil Nawrocki joins us for our second Nightcap with the Noras! Listen in as he takes us on a journey from Chicago loft living to becoming a central figure in the Western Springs community. What makes this conversation fascinating is Phil's natural path to local governance. After sending a hopeful email to the village caucus, he was told to "become president of your subdivision first"—a challenge he embraced wholeheartedly. Soon he was walking every street in Ridgewood documenting potholes and transforming neighborhood social gatherings. His hands-on approach demonstrates how accessible small-town governance can be when residents roll up their sleeves. The episode takes a delightful turn when Phil reveals the origin story of Western Springs' famous "Penguin House"—an inherited tradition featuring 80 illuminated penguins that his family arranges in themed displays each Christmas season. From boxing rings to red carpets, these creative scenes have become a beloved community attraction created with the help of his four children. Equally charming is the tale of his wife Amanda's legendary jello shots color-matched to team uniforms at their children's sporting events.Beyond the entertaining anecdotes lies a thoughtful exploration of what makes communities thrive. Phil describes Western Springs as "Mayberry-like," where neighbors know each other, stop to chat on sidewalks, and even knock on the village trustee's door with concerns. It's a refreshing reminder that meaningful connections still form the backbone of truly special places to live.Have you witnessed how small acts of community involvement can transform a neighborhood? What traditions have you started that bring people together? Listen, reflect, and perhaps be inspired to take that first step toward deeper community engagement wherever you call home.Mike Haggerty Buick GMCRight on the corner, right on the price! I'm a die-hard Eagles fan and being raised in that city has shaped my identity. Hip-hop culture served as my first artistic influence. Run-DMC, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys shaped how I created my own environment. During the summer of O.J. trial I interned at the Philadelphia Daily News. I became hooked on journalism. I went on to another internship at the Des Moines Register and started my career as a business reporter for the Times of Trenton. His work in commercial, industrial, and utility scale solar has been focused on the technical aspects such as design engineering, construction management, QA/QC, Testing, and Operations & Maintenance. With a degree in Applied Physics and engineering background, Chris is a very detailed, logical, and process driven leader. Chris was also a NCAA Division I wrestler and grew up working for a family-owned construction company, which has contributed to his work hard attitude. In 2010, he entered the solar industry as a Project Engineer at Pfister Energy, a New Jersey based EPC firm. Chris supported commercial PV designs. Project and construction management came naturally to Chris from his upbringing in a family-owned construction firm. Chris managed the solar installations on multiple school district portfolios, UPS distribution facility, Teterboro Airport hangers, low and moderate income (LMI) apartment complexes, and building-integrated PV (BIPV) and building-integrated solar thermal systems at Camp Lejeune Marine Base in North Carolina. As the Director of Field Services at PV Pros and Pure Power Engineering, he led the creation of a commercial PV installation division. Chris grew the team to over 30 in-house employees with Job Site Safety, Technical Training, Quality Control, Staffing, and Project Management under his purview. In 2016, he led a start-up effort to transition from regional commercial construction into a national technical services firm, providing Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Owner's Engineer, and Independent Engineering. As the Director of Business Development, Chris's team led the sales of over 1GW of Owner's Engineer, Independent Engineer, and commissioning agent. His team's O&M sales included over 200MW of long-term O&M agreements. The O&M division completed multiple large service projects including PV system removal & re-installations. He continued his career in technical sales as the Director of Business Development at Clean Energy Associates, a global leader in solar manufacturing quality assurance, supply chain management, engineering services, and supplier/market intelligence programs. This new year, there has been a lot of buzz about how short-lived most people's commitment to their resolutions are. Pat and Bret discussed that trend, and the fact that restaurants don't pile on the better-for-you limited-time offers in early January the way they used to. Instead, they start rolling out later in the month, possibly in anticipation of slimming-down efforts that are renewed in the spring. They rounded out the podcast with an interview Bret conducted with Yara Herrera, chef and partner at Hellbender in the Queens, New York, neighborhood of Ridgewood, who discussed the changing role of women chefs, her sourcing strategy and some of her favorite dishes. Give a listen.
In our most recent From the Tap podcast, we spoke to Allison Handler of Ridgewood-, NJ-based Allison Handler Interior Design about the importance of the designer/builder relationship in creating and completing successful projects. She says this partnership is a sacred one because a builder is a designer's partner in crime throughout the whole project.

On this episode, Tony Brueski digs into the chilling story of a family's move to Ridgewood, New Hampshire, and the unsettling events that began when they discovered a hidden room in their basement. What started as mild unease turned into a series of disturbing encounters—a faucet turning on by itself, toys moving without cause, and the constant sensation of being watched. But it wasn't until a friend saw a shadowy figure in the basement that the family realized they might be living with something more than just their imaginations. As Tony unravels this haunting tale, he explores the psychological impact of shared fear and whether these experiences were manifestations of trauma—or something genuinely paranormal. With each encounter building toward the final, terrifying moments, the story raises profound questions: What happens when we disturb the past? And can some doors, once opened, ever truly be closed?

Brynn Waters was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court. The thing she loves most about high school sports is how it brings everyone in the Ridgewood community together to watch the sports activities. Brynn is involved in volleyball, National Honor Society, and her FFA chapter. Outside of school and sports Brynn works First Farm Fridays every single year. Her father and her bring in their sprayer and explain to the kids what it does. She has also participated in the Earth Day field trip for the 5th graders in her county. She has donated canned goods to her local food pantry. Agriculture to Brynn means family. Her family owns a hog farm, so she plans on working there once she completes college. She also associates family with her FFA chapter. When she first started FFA she knew little to no one in the chapter. They welcomed her in with open arms and have been a second family to her ever since. Brynn plans on going to a four year university and majoring in agricultural economics. After that, she plans on working at her family farm's office.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a special episode recorded live just last weekend in New York featuring two artists that appear on an amazingly ambitious new conceptual compilation album called TRANSA, Asher White and MIZU. The album comes from our friends at the Red Hot organization, was conceptualized largely by Dust Reid and Massima Bell, and features more than 100 artists honoring trans and non-binary artists. There are huge names like Sade, Sam Smith, Andre 3000, indie heroes like Julien Baker and Laura Jane Grace, and incredible up-and-comers like today's two guests, who worked on separate tracks. The whole thing comes out November 22, and you can pre-order it now. I won't say much more because former Talkhouse producer Mark Yoshizumi was on hand to introduce Asher and MIZU at the event. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 1:39 – Producer Mark Yoshizumi Intro 5:01 – Start of the chat 12:20 – MIZU and Asher's differing musical backgrounds 20:00 – Ad break 22:20 – "The music that I made is aesthetically different than the music I consume" 25:15 – Musical processes 31:37 – The origins of MIZU and Asher's songs on the TRANSA comp Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to MIZU, Asher White, Mark Yoshizumi, and Honey Moon Coffee in Ridgewood. On an all new episode of The Art Career, Emily sits down with artist, Nick Doyle, in his Ridgewood studio where his recent installation, Human Resources, a friendly neighbourhood kink bar, is situated until it leaves for Paris. The two have a brave and intimate conversation about sexuality, shame, and, of course, art. Nick Doyle is keenly aware of the legacy of the American notion of Manifest Destiny. Known best for sculptural wall works made from collaged denim, Doyle infiltrates the vocabulary of Americana to examine greed, excess, and toxic masculinity. Doyle uses the road trip—a pillar of American mythology—as a point of entry to his work in order to question the persistence of Rugged Individualism as the fabric of our national identity. Through a series of mechanical miniatures, theatrical scenery, and satirical prop-like denim works, the artist foregrounds the dangers of nostalgia and our evolving relationship to consumerism. Seemingly innocuous, Doyle's imagery—vending machine, typewriter, cigarette pack—and materials—indigo and cotton—tell a story of American colonialism and consumerism, as well as explore the influence of media on global trade systems. By employing materials that hold cultural significance, the artist both reflects on and critiques social and political agendas that are often at play in contemporary life and visual culture. https://www.nickdoyle.org https://www.perrotin.com/artists/nick_doyle/777#news https://www.instagram.com/nickdoyle333/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/human_resources._/?hl=en

Jerry is back for an update but first we fill him in on everything we learned about Azerbaijan. DJ LeMahieu had himself a day in Philly as the Yankees swept the Phillies. Boomer thinks the Mets can win the division but Gio says that is absolutely not happening. Adam Schein is fired up about Jazz Chisholm and the Yankees. Jerry wonders if Schein's sons sound like their dad and that inspires Gio. Evan Roberts is getting set for a drunk Rico Brogna podcast episode during his upcoming vacation. He also has a strange plan for how to listen to and score a game during his drive to North Carolina. Gio says he and Evan could not possibly be more different. Aaron Rodgers told reports at Jets camp he was talking about golf when he made the Davante Adams comment and was trying to get a questioner to go away. Garrett Wilson appreciates Aaron Rodgers getting on him for mistakes. A Tennessee radio host handled an angry player very well. Team USA basketball rolled over South Sudan and Katie Ledecky won another gold medal. In the final segment of the hour, a caller who was just on a remote island off the coast of Italy tells Gio to check it out when he goes on vacation next week. She thinks the man she met could be God. Gio shares the sad news that Joan in Ridgewood, who we met in an accidental phone call a few months ago, has passed away.
Hour 1 Boomer and Gio react to the heated back-and-forth between Brandon Tierney and Brian Cashman. Gio thinks both guys were mostly right. Former Marlins executive David Samson wants to pour cold water on Jazz Chisholm's hot start with the Yankees. Boomer says Aaron Boone navigated the Yankees through a tough time. Cashman is bothered by the assertion that the Yankees aren't trying hard enough to win and both Boomer and Gio understand why. Luxury tax penalties are tougher than ever. Jerry is here for his first update but first we talk more about potential casino locations around NYC. Who will win the bid? Boomer thinks the control room smells like socks. DJ LeMahieu drove in all six Yankee runs in a 6-5 win. Jerry has the audio of David Samson ripping Jazz Chisholm. Cashman did acknowledge that the Yankees were mindful of Juan Soto's impending free agency when making trades at the deadline. The Mets couldn't complete the sweep over the Twins. Luis Severino said everything went wrong for him. In the final segment of the hour, we wonder why the United States is so far behind in the sport of 3v3 basketball. Gio had never heard of Azerbaijan. A caller is looking to bet on the Giants but rather than betting on them to win the division, Gio would instead bet the over for their wins. The guys agree the Giants must start 2-0 in order to have any success. Hour 2 Gio just learned about Azerbaijan. He and Boomer did some research during the break and now we learn a lot more from Zoo and callers. Jerry is back for an update but first we fill him in on everything we learned about Azerbaijan. She thinks the man she met could be God. Gio shares the sad news that Joan in Ridgewood, who we met in an accidental phone call a few months ago, has passed away. Hour 3 Gio says don't overreact to Daniel Jones struggling in training camp. Boomer reminds us that Daniel Jones still isn't a full year removed from tearing his ACL. Aaron Rodgers and Robert Saleh still have communication issues to work out. Boomer believes players should play a little bit in the preseason to get the feel of the game. He adds most coaches can talk and agree to use basic gameplans for those series. Does Aaron Rodgers read every article written about him? Jerry returns for an update but first we talk some Mad Dog vs Mike Tirico and the Olympics. D.J. Moore laughs at his initial reaction to being traded to the Bears last year now that he has signed a big extension. Brian Cashman thinks the Yankees have a collection of strengths and no weaknesses. He did acknowledge that the Yankees were paying attention to finances at the trade deadline. Gio believes that could mean money earmarked for Juan Soto. The Mets will be spending most of August out west. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer found an Olympic torch from the Athens 2004 games. Boomer has collected a lot of stuff over the years. Gio has picked up too much stuff of his own and has been trying to offload it. Hour 4 Boomer and Gio discuss a current Olympic controversy involving a transgender boxer who is competing in the games. We live in crazy times. The news cycle and the sports world are harder than ever to keep up with. Gio looks into betting on this Olympic event.
