Deep Club Podcast #53: Omar Martenot

OMAR MARTENOT a.k.a. Bernadette Techneau (Paris) Omar (@omarmartenot) is a Parisian-born DJ whose musical influences range from gipsy jazz to gabber techno by way of the fantastic Argentinian rock & roll. Discovering electronic music during a beautiful sunrise at Weather festival in Paris 2015, he then traveled from the sunny Croatian coast of Pula to wild Brooklyn, NY after parties, eager for more. His main local music influences are the mixing monster Joren a.k.a. Zaraf, the legendary Péripate venue, Roue Libre, and Microclimat collective's wild parties. Half lobster, half human, Omar is before anything else a sound-fueled animal scouting for musical treasures and weird record sleeves. Bernadette Techneau is his female counterpart whose only goal in life is to play "we don't make prisoners" kind of techno at a NYC Bunker event, Detroit style. This mix is about records crossing an ocean, Omar's deep affection for minimal house, and that subtle moment when night ends and the sun's rays slowly rise, breathing the second wind of the party. KIDS' TABLE (Chicago) Kids’ Table aka Paddy Murphy (@dubious-music) spent his early rave days consuming every genre that the Glasgow party scene had to offer before moving to Oxford, where most weekends were spent record shopping and raving in South London. Since an early trip to Chicago and experiencing unabashed freedom of US dancefloors, he later moved to the Midwest city to harangue record shop staff and DJs alike for all the tips and IDs they have. RODNEY KHALASCHI (They’re Here, Housepitality / San Francisco) Rodney Khalaschi (@rodney-kh) fully immersed himself in the San Francisco underground music scene upon moving to the city from Los Angeles in 2014 . With a respectful understanding of the unique culture that exists around collecting and playing vinyl, Rodney pursued deeper musical knowledge and a fine-tuning of his skills under the mentorship of Tyrel Williams (Acid Test, Immortal Sin). Rodney’s unwavering love for vinyl quickly extended into his life away from his decks at home, ushering him into working for Vinyl Dreams and RS94109; two of San Francisco’s most beloved record stores catering to dance music enthusiasts of all varieties. As Rodney fell into family-style relationships with artists and dancers in the Bay Area, his sound began to take shape. His DJ sets fall somewhere on the spectrum between sultry and energetic, always paying homage to the roots of dance music with their simultaneous Chicago and Detroit flavor, and never missing an opportunity to showcase music from local Bay Area artists. Rodney has played a myriad of memorable and expressive gigs, such as his recent set at the Sunset Campout 10 year anniversary in 2019, as well as opening sets for names like BMG, Tin Man, and Justin Aulis Long. He is a resident for Housepitality SF, and co-founder of They’re Here, a monthly dance party with a cult following of dancers who prefer a raw, post-punk edge. This mix is a special demonstration that was recorded in October 2020 from the deeper space of Rodney’s collection in light of feeling inspired by the new beginnings that were starting to unfold in his personal life. TYREL WILLIAMS (Immortal Sin, Secret Studio / SF) Tyrel (@tyrelwilliams) was a mainstay of Chicago’s underground scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records, where he spent many years building his collection of vinyl. He spent 2007-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which was an all vinyl dance party in Chicago. In 2009 he took a job working with Jeff Mills and helping with Axis Records. Tyrel moved to San Francisco in 2011 where he is now a resident DJ for Housepitality, Acid Test, and Fleurs Du Mal. In 2014 he started a project with Bryan Bai-ee called Secret Studio with releases on their own label, Secret Studio Records. His next venture is his new vinyl label with C.L.A.W.S. called Immortal Sin, with the two releases featuring I.B.M. on the first record and Bill Converse on the second. This mix was recorded for Housepitalty back in May 2020. Tyrel was feeling his old deep house collection, so he wanted to tap into that and play some of his favorite deep house records. To understand how limited slip differentials or LSD works, you must understand how a differential works, and how it relates to torque. In basic terms, a differential takes the power from the output drive of your engine and transfers it to your wheels. Inspired by house, techno, hip hop, dubstep, indie rock, jazz and the rich history and present day music scene of New York City, Alex Burkat (@burkat) brings his own perspective to the decks and draws inspiration from everywhere. His first release EP, Shower Scene, was inspired by a night of dancing at one of the Mister Saturday Night parties, resulting in a release on their record label in March of 2013. Burkat released Tarot the same year, a 12" out now on Los Angeles-based label, 100% Silk, a four track compilation inspired by mysticism and global warming with a house-tinged sound. Since then, he has been busy releasing on such labels as Permanent Vacation, Third Ear Recordings, and the Nite Owl Diner. In addition to crafting fine-tuned electronic sounds, Burkat also runs his own parties series in Philadelphia, Ancient Puzzle Arts. From the artist: This mix was recorded briefly before the chaos of COVID-19. At the time, I was reflecting on some time spent in LA over the last two years, and a particularly incredible time seeing Eris Drew and Octo Octa in Philadelphia at Sanctuary City (shout out Elvin T and everyone involved), and wanted to connect some shared emotional motifs related to those experiences. I had a digital crate of about 100 songs I liked, did a one take jam, and this mix was the result. I personally like the energy of one-take-jam mixes, because I am over analytical about everything in life, so I need the zen of DJing to break from that pattern. He has become known as an innovative and consistent producer and a skilled and adventurous DJ, and his sound is an authentic extension of his soul and the pure talent that Jeremy possesses, deftly exploring the soul of yesteryear with a modern context. Sinistarr's mix is a heavy retrospect of the "Autonomic" sound, a style of Drum & Bass that took over the scene inside and out over a decade ago. Helmed by DBridge & Instra:mental , this sound connected the dots between golden-era Drum & Bass, R&B, 80s and 90s soundscapes, Detroit Techno and Electro - an era which led to strength to strength vinyl releases and a heavily-lauded mix series. Cutting his teeth at the former Chicago Trax Recording Studios, after a life in live music performance in orchestras to punk rock ensembles, he crafted a reputation for House Music productions in Chicago under his own name, as well as Broadway & Wilson, and Uptown Tones. Emil's composition and studio productions range from concert works, sound design, and film scores to hundreds of releases of electronic music productions spanning over seventy international music labels. 2012 saw the emergence of his epithet, Change Request, with the Change Theory EP on four play music. This new persona allowed the freedom to explore hybrids of mid-tempo live instrument focused jazz-dance-fusion. Following this first Change Request release was “After All” on Los Angeles-based Seasons Recordings, with another single directly thereafter featuring House Music icon, Chez Damier, “I Wanna Go Back”, including a remarkable rework from Glenn Underground, on Glenview Records. Remixing artists along the way from Common, Kanye West, Little Louie Vega, Jamie Principle, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Iz & Diz, Fast Eddie, Shalamar, Roland Clark, David Morales, Colette, Amp Fiddler, JT Donaldson, and Gene Farris—to name a few—Emil created AstraVox Music with the award-winning Los Angeles-based composer, Mr. Nathaniel, as a home for his increasing catalog of ambient and incidental dramatic musical compositions. 2019 has seen Andrew become even more relentless with long-form and conceptual musical output, including the release of his first Change Request full-length LP, "RiteOnRed" in Dufflebag Recordings, the second full-length LP—forthcoming—"Theoretical Certainty" on Minneapolis imprint Abstrakt Xpressions, as well as a compilation album—The Andrew Emil S&S Sessions—celebrating Emils’ decade-long relationship with the GRAMMY® nominated producer Steve “Silk” Hurley and his S&S Records brand. This mix from Andrew Emil / Change Request has a decided preponderance on his own production—recent works. Showcasing his wide musical dialect, sonic palette, and groove leanings, this set illustrates Emil’s aptitude for creating original music productions, useful edits, masterful rewrites/covers—or what he refers to as “Change Request ReVisions”—and he even bookends this with two ambient abstract pieces of musical noir. Whether he is cutting up jazz, funk, soul, boogie, and hip-hop records or out exploring the deeper sides of house, acid, and disco, he always aims to keep it deep. The mix begins with the record, “Bodies Meld Together” from Octo Octa on 100% Silk. It was one of those records that James instantly connected with; a record that perfectly embodies the collective energy rising up out of the queer underground scene in the rustbelt area right now. ZAPATA (Hardmatter Records / Berlin) Zapata is a Berlin-based DJ and producer who runs Hardmatter Records (@hardmatterrecords) and the recently-inaugurated Streetman Records imprint. Besides running these two labels, he also organises the “DiscoDisco” party at Berlin’s underground Repeat Bar, in which DJs are encouraged to break the four-to-the-floor mold by playing funk, jazz, afro, and anything else that falls in between. Alongside JVXTA, Zapata has worked with Javonntte and Malik Alston, among others, to curate a deep, jazzier electronic sound focused on live improvisation and soul. This mix reflects Zapata’s penchant for eclectic selections, but also keeps to dreamier, atmospheric sounds. The mix presents the DJ and producer in a more pensive and reflective mood, moving from the ambient sounds of Gigi Masin to dreamier New York cuts. Aaron organizes the "Windows" party at Bossa Nova Civic Club and throws other events at different warehouse and DIY spots around the city, including the Evil Disco house party, which has crammed several notable DJs into a Bushwick living room. In this mix, Aaron wanted to blend different styles, clammer ambient tracks to lo-fi and classic Detroit house. He made a point to use tracks from lesser know artist that he found online, as well as several tracks from friends who he feels are great producers. CHRIS TORRES (Oakland) Chris Torres (@chrstrrsmusic) is a drummer and DJ originally from Denver, CO and currently based in Oakland, California. His passion for music was fostered at an early age spending most of his teens and 20s gigging and raving in the copious Denver music scene. He hosted a radio show called the Jazz Odyssey broadcasted on KUVO 89.3fm in Denver from 2015 until his move in 2017. The show highlighted his style rooted in jazz, hip hop, fusion, world, prog, and dance music spanning past to present. Nowadays you can catch him equally comfortable behind the decks or playing drums in a jazz combo around the bay area. The mix is all about having a good time and not taking yourself too seriously. It highlights the love for deep grooves, funky rhythms, and jazz laden melodies with the intention of inspiring the listener to find their own slice of paradise. GOETIC MIRROR (Seattle) Goetic Mirror (@goetic-mirror) is Seattle-based painter, DJ and grunge icon Tyler Madden. They are known for shifting through styles with deliberate strokes, late at night to heady crowds. Goetic Mirror follows a personal interpretation of minimalism rooted in contradiction, error, and struggle; they are always constructing a new challenge for each set, with the idea that New Cool Sh*t emerges when improvising solutions. They like to keep a low profile, carefully developing their skills and knowledge, in order to be a little more reckless behind the booth. Lately, Goetic Mirror has been painting grotesque acid techno sets with a harder sound palette, but their underlying appreciation of beauty lends itself just as well to exploring softer house styles. This mix was recorded in one spontaneous attempt during March 2017, for a local promoter. Tyler wanted to express in the mix that they could play like a normal DJ, but they ended up doing a super weird set for that gig. A whole track might have been played backwards! C POWERS (CGI, Proper Trax, House of Gunt / Savannah, GA) Hailing from the great musical city of Atlanta, @cpowers has absorbed a multitude of musical idioms throughout his life. Born into a psychedelic family of deadheads, Cici heard a lot of synthscapes as a child which might explain his love for electronically made rhythmic music of all kinds. Starting his DJ career in the bedroom at the age of 11, C has since held down gigs in Chicago, London, Atlanta, and now in the moss covered and sun drenched Savannah, GA where he has been absorbed into the House of Gunt family as their DJ. Powers also holds his own monthly, MIX, at the end of every month in Savannah's Club One where Lady Chablis once graced the stage. This mix is a gift to you the listener! It came to fruition after a few trips around the lower southeast's thrift and record shops and is thus full of crackles. Recorded in one live take on a 2x1200 and 2xXDJ set up this mix is gas for the ass! The mix is an investigation of the acid and breakbeat driven music that Cici would hear on late night college radio stations, or at the Sparkles roller rink back in the late 90s and early 2000s. BEANER (La Mission / Berlin) Beaner(@beaner) is one of the many inscrutable aliases of Pablo Roman-Alcalá. Pablo was born on May 29, 1830, in an austere castle called Vroncourt(Haute-Marne) where his mother, Marianne Michel, was a maidservant. His father was reputed to have been Laurent Demahis, the owner's son, but his father may have been the owner himself, Etienne-Charles Demahis. Anyway, his grandparents raised him as a Demahis, and he received a liberal education from them. His grandfather had his read Voltaire, Rousseau, and the encyclopedists, and his grandmother taught him to sing and play piano. In 1850, following his grandparents' and father's deaths, his stepmother drove him from the castle. This mix was done while drinking bottle #187 (of an 800 bottle special edition) of Austrian “Pet-nat” at the home of Jason and Eileen, cool kids extraordinaire. Jason hung out and did some housecleaning while Eileen played Nintendo. Pablo randomly took some records out of the bag, not really paying attention to what order they might make most sense in. Having sworn off making podcasts for the better part of two years, he couldn't be sure if he was recording for long enough or had been mixing records faster than planned. In the end, Octavius Caeser told him it was good enough, and he sent it off via carrier pigeon. RADERE (CELE, Full Spectrum / Denver) Radere (@radere) is the alias of Carl Ritger – a guitarist and synthesist currently based in Denver, Colorado. His work primarily explores the shadowy gulf that exists between drone and noise, blurring traditional instrumentation, electronics, and location recordings into densely textured sonic monoliths. Radere’s recordings have found their way to light via a slew of independent labels, including Full Spectrum Records, Moodgadget Records, basic_sounds (RIP), and futuresequence. He also conducts ongoing collaborations with Sun Hammer, offthesky, Ten and Tracer, Cody Yantis, and Anduin; as well as John Templeton, alongside whom he comprises the experimental techno vehicle Coward. This mix is a recreation of a set he delivered at the New Romanticks launch party in Denver, Colorado on Labor Day. The city was bathed in the smoke of the burning American West. It choked the lungs and burned the eyes as oppressive heat rose from the dust. What was meant to be a fond farewell to summer 2k17 instead devolved into an endurance challenge of Herzogian proportions, befitting the funereal tenor of these selections. Raised on a diet of kraut rock, new wave, soul, reggae, jazz, funk, house, techno and hip hop, he has crafted his own blend of club music with little regard towards public opinion; he has released really fluffy deep house stuff and, under the same name, bleak and dark electro breaks or obscure experimental beats and bass documents. Signed to such relevant editorial brands such as Clone, Midnight Shift, Stripped & Chewed, Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! or Finale Sessions, Ka§par is a consistent and serious underground artist who has built his own sound and universe over the course of twenty years split between DJing and record producing. Over the span of four years, the label released eight quality techno and house dancefloor records showcasing unknown American talent from Tennessee, Georgia, Florida. With no strong promo plan and very little hype, Proper Trax records were picked up and played by only the most tasteful and devoted techno DJs. The label quickly established itself and its roster as some of the most talented and hungry up-and-coming producers and DJs living in America. Our label was strongly influenced by this model when we started, and undoubtedly countless other small dance labels were as well. Proper Trax’s impact in America and beyond cannot be overstated. Many think Proper Trax has closed up shop, but quality digital EPs are still surfacing on its Bandcamp page. And don’t be surprised if you see another 12” appear soon from the label… It’s long overdue that we host Tennessee native and Proper Trax label boss Will Azada for a party with us in Denver. KROBA (Archie Pelago, Sullen Prospector, The Lot Radio / NYC) Kroba, based in NYC, has his hands in many diverse projects. His Monday morning Lot Radio show with Space Jam is one of our favorites. Kroba keeps the sound interesting with an array of sonic styles, while never losing the narrative thread of the mix. This opening set from a party in Newark, NJ is evidence to the fact. Going everywhere from Brian Eno installations to Phil Collins and AtomTM, this mix is an incredibly paced journey. RYAN SCANNURA (Deep Club) Unlike most of my mixes on the Internet, I recorded this one at home instead of at a party. I didn't plan any of it; I was picking records up off my floor as I went. This was just a few days after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, and I had been listening to MFSB and Love is the Message a lot, so I put that on first, not even intending on mixing anything after. This spontaneous two-hour vinyl mix ensued. At the time, the floor of my apartment was littered with Detroit house, techno, and electro records that I recently had bought at Submerge and Detroit Threads when I was there for Movement. Lots of UR classics and Detroit house that I found there. Also some stuff still lingering from my recent visits to Gramaphone and Logan Hardware (Chicago) and a few shops in NYC. I think the mix captures my style pretty well, both in terms of selection and presentation. I don't like sticking to any one style of music when I play records. The mix includes deep and jacking house, disco, acid, electro, and techno. This mix also captures a moment in time -- a time when I was simultaneously feeling down about what had just happened in Orlando and my rather disappointing time in Detroit a few weeks prior; it was my sixth consecutive year going to Detroit during festival weekend, but my first time skipping the festival. I spent a lot of time alone that weekend, and a lot of the music at the parties did not speak to me. It's hard when a lot of your friends are having "the best weekend of the year" and are quite vocal about it, and you're in a completely different headspace. This mix is the result of time reflecting on dark events happening in my country and in my life over the past several months. -Ryan Artwork by Chris Cole Stream / download all Deep Club Podcasts here: soundcloud.com/deepclubus/sets/deep-club-podcasts TRACKLIST: 01.
