Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin have spent the last 20 years helping shape NYC nightlife but these days, they're best known as the owners of Nowadays in Ridgewood, Queens, which is, in many people's estimation, the best club in New York right now. Justin and Eamon are also DJs, run the record label, and are the hosts and residents of long-running parties Mister Saturday Night, Mister Sunday, and an ambient chill-out affair called Planetarium. In part one of this two-parter, we talk to the duo about Mister Saturday Night's 15-year anniversary, the do's and don'ts of fog, wild times at Motherfucker, DIY spaces, post-9/11 NYC and the parties, locations and music that shaped all their endeavors. Here in the tenth and final episode of Season Two, we get to know Eamon Harkin, originally from Derry in Ireland, who has achieved celebrity in the world of DJs, and is taking dance culture and its community to a whole other level in Queens, the biggest borough in the city, and one that is not so outer-borough anymore.Eamon's story takes us from the troubled streets of Derry in the 70s and 80s, over to a hopping London in the 90s, then on to New York, a city in shock in the wake of 9/11, to the gradual rekindling of its cultural fires, and now to its re-emergence from the virus. It's also a story of a persistent inner voice that refused to be smothered under the weight of practicality and sensibleness, and of finding a way to hear that voice, of making music the medium for bringing that voice to life, with all the risks and ‘leaps of faith' that path entailed. There is also a sidebar on how, as luck would have it, CenterPieceNY found Eamon, since he is not super-embedded in NYC's Irish community. It speaks to the wonders of discovery that is omnipresent and ubiquitous in Gotham. Also, give this article a read for some visuals on Nowadays, the club that Eamon and his business partner, and fellow DJ, Justin Carter opened in Ridgewood, Queens. There's also a great map of NYC neighborhoods to explore there!===========================================Some additional info:NowadaysMister Saturday NightJohn McDaid and Snow PatrolJohn O'Neill and The UndertonesThe TroublesA-LevelsDerry Girls===========================================Super thanks to our centerpiece, Eamon Harkin himself, for all music heard in this episode (excluding Intro/Outro). Kosmische, jungle, trance, electro, dub, house, techno, jazz funk and disco. Mister Harkin back for another solo show on the Lot.
Eamon Harkin & Justin Carter b2b live from the Lot Radio Nov 4th 2021. Playing tunes from their bag that weren't played on the outdoor closing Mister Sunday party a few days before.
Four days ago, we capped off a season of parties that, at one point, we weren't sure would ever happen. Mister Sunday was our first return to the dance floor after lockdown, and it remained, week in and week out, a source of joy and rejuvenation in the last six months' roller coaster of reopening. This mix was recorded at the finale of Mister Sunday's outdoor season, with Nowadays founding resident DJs and Mister Sunday dons Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter tearing through rough-and-ready industrial, propulsive New York soulful house, bubbling big room techno, boisterous rave tracks, acid melters, Italo jams, jazz dance and all kinds of other cathartic sounds. An extended four-hour version of the mix is up on the Patreon for all supporters. You can download and listen to the whole shebang right now if you're a subscriber. If you're not, it's just $5/month, which gets you access to a huge archive of mixes, classes and other goodies, as well as early access to party announcements. www.patreon.com/nowadaysnyc Thanks to James, Lorna, Gareth, Krissy, Chris, Kristin, Jada, Nowadays security, Nowadays bar staff, the safer space team and the crew in the food truck for seeing us through. And thanks to you for showing up and giving it back on the dance floor. It takes all of us together to make it happen.
