His show “3 Songs from the Liver” was on view at Gladstone Gallery, NY, Nov 2024 - Feb 2025. “AI outputs are not “images” as we know them. And if we try to understand them in that way, then we're really…. f*cked, you know?” Following this conversation, keep listening for “Enter Through Medieval Wounds” a radio play by Mark Leckey, which first appeared in essay form in Heavy Traffic V (Fall 2024). Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Legendary online radio station NTS  played a 30-minute special on Migration Sounds on 15 December, as part of a 24-hour broadcast marking International Migrants Day. Our programme is a 30-minute mix of field recordings taking you through three aspects of migration: forced migration, diaspora communities and daily life as a migrant. Programme info: The field recording excerpts in this programme are as follows:  Forced migration 2.15: Mediterranean Sea: Three boats rescuing around 130 people from an overloaded rubber boat in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, at 2.00am on 27 December, 2022.  The rescuees were attempting to reach Europe from Libya - where they had suffered extensive abuse. Among them were many children, and one infant just weeks old. Recorded by Frey Lindsay 4:29: Mediterranean Sea: After the first rest they've had in a long time, the rescuees aboard the Ocean Viking celebrated having survived the journey, utilising the drums kept onboard.  Recorded by Frey Lindsay 5:36: Mediterranean Sea: Testimony from Joseph, an asylum seeker from Nigeria, onboard a charity rescue ship. Along with over a hundred other people, he was rescued from an unseaworthy rubber boat headed for Europe from Libya. Recorded by Frey Lindsay 6:33 Marianosztra, Hungary: Inmates in the prison behind the Marianosztra Monastery were feeding metal tape through stamping machines to make razor wire to fortify Hungary's border fences against migrants and refugees. The razor wire was also being exported to other countries. Recorded by Maria Margaronis 7:36 Eidomeni, Greece: In 2016,  more than 14,000 people on the move from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere were living in a muddy, makeshift camp site at Eidomeni on the Greek-North Macedonian border, hoping to make their way north. This is the voice of Mohammed, from Syria. Recorded by Maria Margaronis 8:36 Bordeaux, France: On 19th of December 2023 France approved a new immigration law. It is a law that makes it harder for families of immigrants to join them, limits the support for migrants from outside the EU, establishes staying illegally in the country as a crime, suppresses the automatic right to citizenship for those who are born in France from foreign parents and demands a fee from foreign students in the country. This is a recording of a protest against this law. Recorded by Rocio Calvo 9:39: Bremen, Germany: Protest against racism and strict EU/Germany migration laws in Bremen, Germany. Protesters are chanting "Um Europa keine Mauern – Bleiberecht für alle und auf Dauer!" ("No walls around Europe – Permanent right to stay for everyone!") Recorded by Pedro Oliveira Diaspora communities 10:16 Louisville, USA: A Somali immigrant speaks at the Louisville Movement Against Trump rally, March 2017, set up to oppose Trump's visit to Kentucky. Recorded by Aaron Rosenblum 11:19: London, England: Prayers inside the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Sikh temple in Southall, a modern Sikh temple with space for 3,000 worshippers which also organises regular community events.  Recorded by Cities and Memory 12:56: New York, USA: Columbus Park in Chinatown, New York has served as a gathering place for the local Chinese community, where the neighbourhood meets up to play mahjong, perform traditional Chinese music and practise tai chi in the early mornings.  Recorded by Cities and Memory 15:21: Xinjiang, China: In Altay, Xinjiang, Kazakhs have lived here for hundreds of years and still maintain a nomadic lifestyle that follows the seasons. However, the process of modernization and development is changing their traditions, customs and even language. The younger generation is unwilling to continue the hard nomadic life, and the older generation who are gradually aging may be the last generation of nomadic Kazakhs. Recorded by Yang Jie 17:36: London, England: The sound of traditional garment manufacture and repair at Dressmode Tailoring, which is run by Bangladeshi Mohammed Shajahan, originally from Sylhet, Bangladesh. This shop has been operating for around 17 years, but times have been tough for businesses like this in recent years due to the growth of fast fashion and outsourcing. The owners were telling us that while the older generation of Bangladeshis often travel home to visit, the younger generation are forgetting Bangladesh completely. Recorded by Cities and Memory 18:38: London, England: The sound of a traditional west African barber's shop in Peckham. Barber's shops like these often operate as a centre for the local African community to come together and socialise, just as much as to get their next haircut - they're an essential part of the fabric of local African diaspora communities in the city. Recorded by Cities and Memory 20:41: Padova, Italy: Dominic is an immigrant from Senegal, West Africa, who has been living in Padova in Italy for a number of years, performing as busker in the same spot every single day. We had been enjoying listening to his beautiful voice and songs from his home every time we visited the city for several years until last year we finally stopped and spoke to him to hear a little bit of his story. Recorded by Cities and Memory 22:12: Dubai, United Arab Emirates:  The field recording is of a group of Filipino expats having a competitive game of basketball. Filipinos form close to 25% of the population in Dubai. Most come to Dubai for work in order to support their families back home. One of the most common activities for Filipinos (usually men) to engage in is basketball. Recorded by Zubin Aroz Migration is life 23:37: Ljubljana, Slovenia: “While I was feeling gloomy, I stirred a soup in order to feel close to my parents, my hometown, and to feel at home again.” Recorded by Görkem Özdemir 24:54: Cartagena, Colombia: Christine's daughter, aged 9, recites a fable in French - born in Colombia to a French mother, she has been home schooled in French. Reading and reciting poems was part of her distance learning programme.  Recorded by Christine Renaudat 26:23: San Francisco, USA: Juan Pablo is 19 years old. I randomly approached him in Dolores Park in San Francisco and asked to record him speaking about what he's learned about himself so far in life. He's explaining his migration from Brazil to the US. This piece explores his journey through the confines of cultural, social, and political borders.  Recorded by Wendy Baker 27:26: Zitacuaro, Mexico: The sound of thousands of monarch butterflies known for their long annual migration between Mexico and the United States, recorded as Christine, a migrant settled in Latin America, was mourning her grandmother, who had passed away in France, back “home”. Recorded by Christine Renaudat

"I was surrounded by all walks of life." Live from Dekmantel, the New York native talks about how the Bronx shaped her taste in music, her long-time love of radio and blowing up on the international DJ circuit. Gabrielle Kwarteng is a rising talent that you may have seen on stages at major festivals and clubs around the world. Her unique sound is dynamic and house-heavy, incorporating elements of acid, techno and everything in between. In this interview recorded live at Dekmantel, she discussed her upbringing in a Ghanaian household in the Bronx, and how that environment (and the neighborhood itself) moulded her taste in music. The community she grew up in was culturally diverse, filled with the sounds of reggaeton, bachata, merengue and freestyle from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and beyond. As both of her parents moved from West Africa, she was introduced to a diet of highlife music and jazz from a young age. Kwarteng's taste began to expand when she began exploring New York's record stores. Fast forward to university, and the aspiring DJ became deeply involved in her school radio station, which she describes as a turning point and a revelation. She speaks movingly about the abiding power that radio has had in her life—she continues to be involved with stations like Refuge Worldwide and The Lot, and soon NTS Radio, where she'll hold a residency beginning in 2025. She also talks about what it's like to be a female minority in the music industry, the experience of having her career take off at such rapid speed upon relocating to Europe and the importance of summoning optimism no matter the circumstances. We trailed ‘big things coming' on our last episode, and would you look at that – the big thing has come. Or is available for pre-order, at least. That's right, it's our first ever book. Titled No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture and designed by All Purpose Studio, this hefty tome (350+ pages) compiles every interview to date on No Tags, edited transcripts of the best of Chal and Tom's non-guest conversations, and specially commissioned essays from four of our favourite writers and thinkers: Eris Drew, Chris Zaldua, Henry Bruce-Jones and Ray Philp. The book is available to pre-order now. We'll also be launching the book with our first live show in London on 3rd December, taking over Ridley Road Market Bar. On the night we've got Kode9 giving his new talk on Sonic Warfare for the first time in the UK, celebrating a new release of his seismic 2009 book about acoustic force and the ecology of fear. We'll also be recording a live episode of No Tags with everyone's favourite breakfast host Flo Dill, morning doyenne of NTS Radio. Plus we'll have music from Jennifer Walton – not only one of our favourite artists, but the wizard behind the No Tags theme tune. Entry is free, simply hit ‘Interested' on the event page. There is also a podcast this week. We introduce the book before getting into some of our favourite recent releases (The Cure, mediopicky, Dubbel Dutch and Toma Kami) and dissecting the long-awaited debut album by Two Shell. There's also some film chat (Lords of Dogtown, Kneecap, The Florida Project) and a debate over the key historical entries in the Florida Film canon. We are confident that No Tags is the only podcast where Toma Kami and Wild Things get discussed in the same breath – and if that doesn't count for something in 2024, what does? London's Moxie (@djmoxie) has always embodied a fearless approach to DJing. Her sets are driven by her famously eclectic taste and can go from deep Detroit techno to face-melting bass via loved-up disco in an instant. She made her name as one of the earliest hosts on NTS Radio but is now a favourite of the global underground who has often impressed at our own events. Her "Moxie Presents" compilations have shown her dedication to championing forward-thinking artists and have helped make her a genuine new school tastemaker. This week Moxie has put together a breezy jaunt through many different facets of her sound. There are balmy summer pads and carefree house beats to start with then things head indoors for deeper, darker sounds but always saved up with plenty of warmth and emotion. This mix is a perfect encapsulation of how Moxie can take you from the early evening to late into the night without you even noticing.

This week we're discussing every album by Flipper. While known to many as a huge influence to bands like Nirvana and the Melvins, Flipper are a punk band unlike any other. They're as amazing as they are terrible, but completely unique and bizarrely innovative. After founding member and bassist/vocalist Will Shatter died in 1987, they've gone through various breakups and reunions, even as far as recruiting Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and the Jesus Lizard's David Yow. These days they tour with the legendary Mike Watt.Closing track: "Hard Cold World" from Public Flipper Limited (1986)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexRobert @hoodpass.wicTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteRobert's show on NTS Radio: https://www.nts.live/shows/yayayi Robert's album: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6y9HtgqNCUTgnemSjTdpO4?autoplay=trueMike's Picks:Sex Bomb Baby (1988) -- Best AlbumAlbum - Generic Flipper (1982) -- Personal FavoriteAmerican Grafishy (1993) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Album - Generic Flipper (1982) -- Best AlbumGone Fishin' (1984) -- Personal FavoritePublic Flipper Limited (1986) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteRobert's Picks:Album - Generic Flipper (1982) -- Best AlbumSex Bomb Baby (1988) -- Personal FavoriteAmerican Grafishy (1993) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode...Album - Generic Flipper (1982)Blow'n Chunks (1984)Gone Fishin' (1984)Public Flipper Limited (1986)Sex Bomb Baby (1988)American Grafishy (1993)Love (2009)

"The honesty of my music and poetry comes from church." The South London artist discusses his turn away from religion and his love of sound systems as the city celebrates 56 years of Notting Hill Carnival. The annual Caribbean street parade Notting Hill Carnival has taken place in London since 1966 to celebrate the influx of immigrants brought to the UK during Windrush. Carnival is a celebration of the rich and multifaceted artistic heritage that came with them, especially in the form of Afro-Caribbean music, dance and sound system culture. The South London-born poet, producer and NTS Radio host James Massiah is one of a generation of musicians who has been influenced by the city's Afro-Caribbean cultural legacy. In this interview, he talks to Errol Anderson of the South London-based curatorial platform Touching Bass about his connection to London's sound systems and his own artistic evolution. His output centres around hedonism and what he calls "joyful living"—a reaction to the church community he grew up in. Many of the lyrics on his most recent EPs, like True Romance, paint a picture of drugs, partying, sex, addiction and heartbreak (he's even gone on to name his recurring poetry night Adult Entertainment). Music, he reflects, has provided a powerful and cathartic means to express himself and open up. In his youth, Massiah wasn't just shaped by his church, he says, but by the Afro-Caribbean genres circulating through his neighborhood: '80s funk, raga, garage, grime and a form of Jamaican dancehall called Yardie. Later, as he was exposed to popular rock and house music, he took the sensibilities he heard in pop acts like Fleetwood Mac and applied them to a Caribbean musical framework. His sound palette is an uncanny amalgamation of Stevie Nicks' ethereal voice with the stylings of soca—a sub-genre that fuses calypso, reggae and Caribbean zouk. Listen to the episode in full.

FAUZIA is an artist of many moods. The UK talent moves from IDM to soul on her NTS Radio residency, while her club DJ sets reveal her love for '90s-style breaks, electro and bass-heavy sounds. In the studio, she explores her softer side through self-released homespun dub and ambient jungle. In recent years, she's gravitated towards live performances. Her gossamer vocals, one of her strongest suits, cuts through live instrumentation like a hummingbird in agile flight. In 2020, the London-based talent told Mixmag that she was done being categorised as a "dance music" artist—and so far, she's succeeded. While she incorporates clubby touchstones into her work, there's a deep level of cross-genre knowledge and blending at play. FAUZIA's RA podcast makes that clear. Free of any four-to-the-floor music, it moves from experimental jazz to orchestral melodies to R&B ballads for a thoughtful and introspective journey full of her own unreleased music that points towards her newer interest in composition. Are end of year lists over? This year it felt like end of year season came and went with minimal impact and minimal consensus. So why was that? Falling in the middle of a global crisis obviously doesn't help, but even outside of the news context — and frankly that's never stopped musicians tooting their own horns before — 2023's parade of end of year lists really did feel like a damp squib. We also tackled the year's objective stand-out hits (‘Sprinter', ‘Boy's a Liar Pt. 2'), the music that had a global impact but was ignored in most editorial lists (‘Water', amapiano in general), the impact of NTS Radio on people's tastes, dance music's ups (Nikki Nair) and downs (Bandcamp), Chal's #JusticeForPadam campaign, the post-millennial vibe shift, and some of our own favourite records, radio shows and films to come out this year. Thanks for listening to No Tags. Drawing inspiration from her multi-cultural heritage and mythology elements from science fiction, CORIN's distinctive mixes feature an assemblage of converging styles, ranging from IDM, EBM, trance, and baroque-laden ambience. In her hour-long Select session, CORIN has mixed a selection of tracks from various compilations, which have been released recently to raise funds for Palestine, such as Paralaxe Editions' ‘For Palestine', Mrama Division's ‘By All Means', and Cease 2 Exist's ‘Emergency For Gaza'. We explore the distinction between the pornographic and the erotic in relation to memoir writing, and discuss the process of revealing and concealment when writing from lived experience. We chat about the importance of images and symbols in articulating trauma, with reference to Louise Bourgeois' 'Spiral Woman' as a symbol which holds contradictions within recovery. We speak about the interweaving of presence, loss, memory and history within writing and discuss the influence of artists and writers such as Louise Bourgeois, Deborah Levy and Marlene Dumas on Octavia's work. "If you feel like you're not progressing, the likelihood is that everyone else you're looking at is going through exactly the same thing." Conducta and Charisse C talk about isolation and mental health in this collaboration with Black Minds Matter UK. Resident Advisor is delighted to welcome back our quarterly collaboration with Black Minds Matter UK, a charity connecting Black individuals and families with free mental health services. In line with their mission to make topics around mental health more visible and accessible to the Black community, this recurring series dives deep into some of the issues that plague BIPOC artists specifically, not to mention people working within the creative industries more generally. In this episode, Vanessa Maria hosts engaging conversations with two London-based artists: Charisse C, a DJ and resident on NTS Radio who derives much of her musical inspiration from her Zimbabwean and South African heritage, and Conducta, a UKG tastemaker and the founder and A&R of Kiwi Rekords. The duo share their thoughts on themes around loneliness—the alienation of social media, the risk of burnout on the road and the self-doubt that accompanies any kind of achievement. But they also share inspiring ways to encourage transparency and a real dialogue around hard work and happiness in the dance music scene that isn't mitigated by social media and outward appearances of success. "Everything that people think has happened overnight in the last two or so years, that's all been a process and a journey of hard work," says Conducta. "I think one thing that will benefit young people coming up in the music industry is understanding that if you feel like you're hitting a stalemate, the likelihood is that everyone else you're looking at is going through exactly the same thing, feeling exactly the same thing." LDLDN is DJ, producer - and most importantly - obsessed with music. A host on NTS Radio since 2012, his shows hop between jazz fusion, Detroit techno and anything else that generates a feeling. His SpaceBass parties and DJ sets at the likes of Erol Alkan's ‘To The Rhythm' at XOYO, I Love Acid at Corsica Studios, We Out Here Festival, Lovebox, Tate Modern and Secretsundaze swing easily between dancefloor steppers and more thoughtful, deeper grooves. Movement is key, genres and BPMs - not so much. Founding Natural Frequency Records has allowed LDLDN to bring all that together - releases that are musically diverse and tap into years of experience raving, collecting and dreaming about music. Tracks that aim to capture an emotion or idea in a genuine and interesting way. "My tastes cover so many different styles, tempos and vibes, it's often tricky to choose a particular direction for a mix. But after seeing some of the chaos at a recent Slothboogie party I thought I'd go straight in with some front-foot, late-night house, techno and acid selections to get you moving. A sprinkling of new and old - including stuff on my Natural Frequency label - recorded in one take to capture the energy. Really enjoyed putting this together and hope you do to"

Anastasia Kristensen's greatest gift is to weave an electrifying sonic thread through her DJ Sets. She gathers sounds from a vast array of styles, enthusiastically researches off-grid electronics and blends them together through an adventurous, if not infectious, mixing technique. Dance oriented Avantgarde - that is exactly her edge. Her BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix turned so many heads that it got nominated for the Best Essential Mix of 2022 and is a testament to her ability to select and synthesize.
To become the selector that she is today, Anastasia embraced non - conformity and fortitude throughout her life. Non - conformity, that means a musical curiosity that explores the less conventional places in electronic music, but it also means continuously aiming for her audience to let go on the dancefloor. At present she hosts regular all-nighters at Den Anden Side, a new underground venue in her hometown Copenhagen and holds a residency at Mainstream, the city's most reputable LGBTQ party. Both platforms stand for her versatility and community orientation and are key contributors to her experience of playing foggy high quality basements and festival stages dexterously and with devotion. I's a rare quality to perform with such an ease in these divergent ambiances. Even more so, to provide such an engaging variety of sounds there and to captivate the audiences in an instant. Whoever attends one of Kristensen's kaleidoscopic sets should be ready to get lost and experience the unpredictable. Having played the experimental UNSOUND Festival, and clubs like FOLD, BLITZ and Elysia in Basel, the Danish DJ convinced many knowledgeable crowds and gained praise for it. This is no different for her rare live performances - like the opening of the CTM Festival in 2018. To care for a community and to further build it up is of significant importance for the artist. Her 2020 efforts to curate the compilation “Rewire and Acquire” and bring 18 producers together in service of the organization “Equality Now”, show that she walks the talk intrepidly.
Being a producer, too, the energy of dance - oriented Avantgarde is detectable in her releases and remixes. Following the debut “Maxima” (2019) on the cutting edge outlet Houndstooth, the EP “Ascetic” on Warps sub- label Arcola exhibits a futuristic genre blend between electro, IDM and spooky techno. Houndstooth is also the home for her latest release “Volshebno” that captures mesmerizing dancefloor moments. Fittingly, “Volshebno” stands for “magic” in Anastasia's mother tongue, Russian. 2023 will be a continuation of her mission to represent musical curiosity and community, as Anastasia will host listening sessions in Copenhagen. Community Members will showcase music they love and tell the connected stories around them. Besides that, she will hold a residency at the highly reputable NTS Radio. By embodying authentic, tasteful curation and selection, by connecting individuals in communities they feel belonging to, Anastasia Kristensen will no doubt further transcend her inspiring artistic footprint into the electronic realm. The AM, also known as Ann-Marie Teasley is a techno DJ that started out as a classical violinist in Detroit, MI. She discovered the underground rave scene in her hometown in 1996 and her sound is a reflection of the dark hard music she discovered in warehouses and abandoned theatres. Her sets take you on a nostalgic journey through electro straight from the streets of Detroit, to raw and funky peak time techno. The AM made her debut as a guest DJ on NTS radio being featured on Ash_Lauryn's Underground and Black show in 2017 while living in Miami, FL. From there she began playing local parties around Miami Beach. In 2019, she relocated to Detroit, and began playing local clubs like TV Lounge and Grasshopper Underground. Upon her return, she also began to work with Detroit's very own Scan7. After being on the bill at the same events around Detroit, The AM teamed up with Mr. Hooper, the youngest member of Scan7 for hard hitting live DJ sets. After spending time discovering hardware in the studio with Scan7, The AM and Mr. Hooper decided to create an official joint venture called HLX-1. HLX-1 recorded their first two self-released singles “I Can Tell” and “The Cosmos” at Submerge Records in Detroit, MI in August 2020. From there, they continued working and switched from DJ sets, to live techno sets, including all original music created by HLX-1. In December of 2020 the HLX-1 track “I Can Tell” was featured on Beatport's ‘Top 50 tracks of 2020' list. The AM was also featured on Beatport's ‘On our radar' for August 2020 and closed out the year with a set for Paxahau TV streamed from their headquarters in Detroit. To kick off 2021 The AM was featured on Rinse FM, NTS Radio with Moxie, The HNYPOT Podcast hosted by Honey Soundsystem, and Resident Advisor's top DJ's for February, while writing and recording two EP's with Ken Clements for HLX-1 in collaboration with DJ Maaco and Mark Flash. The AM currently curates a monthly live Techno show with Detroit Promo TV in collaboration with Underground and Black ‘The Detroit Edition,' which is focused on showcasing artists and their skills live on the decks. Detroit Promo TV also known as “THE BASSMENT DETROIT” has been preserving the Detroit Underground realness for the past eight years and welcomed The AM as a host after her first guest appesrance. HLX-1于2020年8月在密歇根州底特律的Submerge唱片公司录制了首两首自拍单曲《I Can Tell》和《The Cosmos》。从那以后,他们继续工作,从DJ表演转化成Live set的表演,表演HLX-1创作的所有原创音乐。在2020年12月,HLX-1的曲子“I Can Tell”被列入Beatport的“2020年Top tracks”名单。 Raquel B. began her career as a Techno DJ in Shanghai, China where she delivered the Detroit techno sound and influence. Efni Lestarinnar í dag: Honoré de Balzac, einn merkasti rithöfundur 19.aldar, var logandi hræddur við ljósmyndavélina. Hann taldi líkamann samsettan úr lögum draugalegra smásæja himna sem myndavélin gæti lagt hald á, aðskilið og fjarlægt. Hann óttaðist sumsé að ljósmyndin gæti rænt hann hluta af sjálfinu. Ljósmyndun hefur breyst töluvert á síðustu tveimur öldum - með hliðsjón af Instagram og sjálfu-kúltúr samtímans verður spurt í Lestinni í dag hvort hræðsla skáldsins hafi kannski ekki verið alveg ástæðulaus. Tómas Stankiewicz hefur verið að gera það gott bæði hér heima og erlendis en hann gerir tónlist undir nafninu Tommasi. Ásamt því að vinna með tónlistarfólki frá þekktum plötuútgáfum eins og Brainfeeder og Stones Throw er hann með sinn eiginn útvarpsþátt á tónlistarstöðinni virtu, NTS Radio, sem starfrækt er í Lundúnum, Los Angeles, Shanghai og Manchester. Tómas er mikill áhugamaður um svokallaða safnatónlist, sem hann segir frá í þættinum í dag. Og Karl Ólafur Hallbjörnsson fjallar í pistli dagsins um heimspekilegt sjónarhorn kvikmyndarinnar. For this episode of our Criticism in Conversation series, a writer and collaborative performer, Jacob Wren, speaks with artist Dayna Danger, about the line between empowerment and objectification and the meaning of community in both their work. Danger is a 2Spirit/Queer, Metis/Saulteaux/Polish artist whose images highlight and queer power dynamics, kinship, representation, and sexuality. Wren makes collaborative performances, exhibitions and literature, including 2014's Polyamorous Love Song and this year's Authenticity is a Feeling, a hybrid of history, performance theory, and memoir. Together they cover a lot of ground, from personal narratives and community relationships to speaking against silence and apathy. We also receive a set of strategies for working and living in capitalist and colonial society, including creating your own rituals and adopting an ethics of abundance. This episode is edited by Jacob Irish, features original music by Kyle McCrea and production assistance by Mitra Shreeram. In this episode of “Criticism in Conversation”, two art critics and historians discuss “conflict of interest” in contemporary art criticism. Tyler Green, the host of the popular Modern Art Notes Podcast  and Catherine G. Wagley, a critic who regularly publishes with artnet News, the LA Review of Books, and Momus, frame the stakes and risks of a critic writing on contemporary - and even historical - figures in art, especially in light of the market's increasingly firm grip on our discourse. We can hear them debate the most ethical approach to navigating nepotism, allyship, and critical distance in contemporary art writing. And as a centerpiece to this discussion, they cite the recent example of an art historian outing two leading art publications for acquiescing to the control exercised by a leading gallery over the material published on its artists. In an artworld where conflict-of-interest is endemic and normalized, our attention should be heightened, especially regarding the powers that dictate the terms by which we critique, historicize, and debate.  Momus: The Podcast is co-produced and co-hosted by Sky Goodden and Lauren Wetmore. Momus: The Podcast

Two art and technology critics, Nora Khan and Mike Pepi, discuss pushing for a rigorous critical discourse in a creative field that can flatten evaluative distinctions in favor of zealotry for invention.  “Criticism of a tool that's presented as neutral when it really is a piece of social engineering is incredibly hard to do, and there really isn't a model for criticism in this space,” says Khan. In this far-ranging discussion that touches on the critical distance and yet humanism required of writing on the internet, surveillance, and AI, Khan and Pepi assert that tools aren't divorced from their makers, and artwork is never post-human - nor post-critique. “Criticism in Conversation” is a series by Momus: The Podcast, and is co-produced and co-hosted by Lauren Wetmore and Sky Goodden. Art Criticism vs. Journalism with Catherine G. Wagley and Julia Halperin – Ep. 03

In the first episode of Momus's new “Criticism in Conversation” podcast series, an art critic and an art journalist parse the differing responsibilities and approaches of their craft. Catherine G. Wagley (a Momus contributing editor, and a critic for ARTNews and The Los Angeles Review of Books, among others) and Julia Halperin (Executive Editor of artnet News, and former Museums Editor for The Art Newspaper) compare notes and find common ground as they consider, in particular, the example of a potent piece of journalism published by Halperin concerning the influence of five commercial galleries on worldwide institutional programming. Wagley wonders if this kind of reporting isn't also the province of criticism, as these politics affect what we see – and how. “Criticism in Conversation” is a new series by Momus: The Podcast, and is co-produced and co-hosted by Lauren Wetmore and Sky Goodden.
