We review the book "Bad Kitty Does Not Like Thanksgiving" by Nick Bruel.Support the show
Hat tip to Nick Bruel (our other other brother from another nother mother) for today's suggestion. He asked if we'd done any Ezra Jack Keats before and we said, "Sure! We did The Snow Day". Then he asked if we'd done Apt. 3 and we had NOT! Plus, Betsy had recently highlighted on her blog the new Keats bio for adults, Becoming Ezra Jack Keats, so this seemed particularly apropos. In this episode we discuss how this book is like Only Murders in the Building, how, from a color-perspective, this book is quite muted, compared to previous titles by Keats like Whistle for Willie, and why you should never follow someone when they ask, "What's the matter - scared?". Show Notes: And here, we are so pleased to show you, is the original 1971 Kirkus review of Apt. 3. It is, as is often the case with this publication, delightful: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/ezra-jack-keats/apt-3/ For the full Show Notes please visit: https://afuse8production.slj.com/2023/05/08/fuse-8-n-kate-apt-3-by-ezra-jack-keats/(opens in a new tab)

Having already covered the recently departed legend Eric Carle, we figure it only makes sense (and is fair) to mention the other recently departed legend, Lois Ehlert. But which book to do? Betsy will confess to you that 95% of my choice to do this book was based on a letter Bad Kitty author Nick Bruel once wrote to Ms. Ehlert, alongside a box of chocolates (read on this show). In this episode the sisters insult one another's mom, discuss a TikTok challenge, and determine the proper pronunciation of "xigua" and its origins. Show Notes: Total Number of Fruits and Veggies From This Book That Kate Has Eaten: 41 Total Number of Fruits and Veggies From This Book That Betsy Has Eaten: 47 Kate mentions that if you put a grapefruit in the microwave, it'll spark. That, in turn, reminded Betsy of this episode of Radiolab, which examines why fruits and veggies spark in the microwave and what that truly means: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/articles/big-little-questions Kate mentions the Tik Tok strawberry challenge. We haven't watched this in its entirety, so we cannot attest if this is safe for work, but the first few are okay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmdi0FQRN1Q Betsy Recommends: The podcasts Flash Forward (a podcast that examines the scientific possibilities of different outrageous futuristic situations) and The Marvel Reread Club (rereading Marvel comics and my husband is one of the hosts) Kate Recommends: The board game Articulate For the full Show Notes please visit: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2021/07/12/fuse-8-n-kate-eating-the-alphabet-by-lois-ehlert/(opens in a new tab)

Across the globe, nearly 50 million children have been uprooted — an enormous number for anyone to comprehend. So how do you explain such a complex and challenging issue to children? This week's guest, children's author Nick Bruel, helps us answer this question, as his latest book, "Bad Kitty: Kitten Trouble," aims to contextualize the global refugee crisis for younger audiences. He talks with us about his process and how his family's history continues to inspire him. "Folktales! They don't end the way you expect 'em to . . . if they're authentic." If you are familiar with #ownvoices children's books, then you know that these are titles where a book is written by someone with learned experience from the culture they are representing. We might have quite a debate over what the oldest #ownvoices picture book published in America is, that is arguably famous to this day, and that also is written by someone who wasn't white and European. Our vote goes to today's book circa 1932. Sadly, it appears to be out of print. For that matter, ALL of Pura Belpre's books look like they're out of print, with the possible exception of Firefly Summer. Something wrong with that, people. In this episode Kate and I get to do all kinds of fun animal sounds. Particularly "Borom". We're very fond of "Borom" Lots of books get mentioned in this show. One of them that is discussed right at the top is the upcoming Goodnight, Bubbala by Sheryl Haft and Jill Weber. Coming this fall. Here's a link to that lamentable Washington Examiner piece The Baltimore Mayor Scandal Wouldn't Have Happened If Modern Children's Books Weren't So Dumb. You kind find Nick Bruel's response on Facebook. - https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/the-baltimore-mayor-scandal-wouldnt-have-happened-if-modern-childrens-books-werent-so-dumb Just a quick note that if you want a cool picture book that features Pura Belpre and here Perez and Martina puppets, check out The Storyteller's Candle by Lucia M.
