Theatre kids, rise up! Today we meet John Yates and the young people decide to put on a play. Edmund is NOT a fan of this idea. Julia finally gets her answers about Henry's feelings.Topics discussed include the pettiness of theatre kids, Edmund and Tom's power struggles, Jane Austen's involvement with theatre, Edmund's overall wussiness, the plot of Lovers' Vows, and Julia's comeback. The young people of Mansfield Park are making theatre, and so is our very own audio producer, Graham! Come see him in a brand-new work called The Marble in My Mouth on January 9th and 10th at 7:00 and 8:30 PM! Performances are at Stella Adler Center for the Arts in New York City. Get your tickets HERE! Patron Study Questions this week come from Judith, Diana L., Kaitlyn, and Avi.Topics discussed include the modern equivalence of Lovers' Vows, theatre kids flirting with each other, the characters' feelings about the play, and Fanny's reaction to the play at the end of the chapters.Becca's Study Questions: Topics discussed include how theatre is moving the story along and the scandal of Maria's participation in the play.Funniest Quote(s): “As he said this, each looked towards their mother. Lady Bertram, sunk back in one corner of the sofa, the picture of health, wealth, ease, and tranquility, was just falling into a gentle doze, while Fanny was getting through the few difficulties of her work for her.”“If I must give my opinion, I have always thought it the most insipid play in the English language - I do not wish to make objections, I shall be happy to be of any use, but I think we could not choose worse.”Questions moving forward: Who's watching this play? Will Julia participate? Will Fanny try to stop the play? Will Fanny try to stop it?Who wins the chapters? Julia!!!Glossary of Terms and Phrases: baize (n): a coarse, typically green woolen material resembling felt, used especially for covering pool, snooker, and billiard tables.by the ears: to cause to dispute or quarrelGlossary of People, Places, and Things: Austenland, Only Murders in the Building, Spring Awakening, Spring Awakening, Hair, Rent, Prince Faggot, The Vagina Monologues, ZanessaNext Episode: Mansfield Park Chapters 15-16Our show art was created by Torrence Browne, and our audio is produced by Graham Cook. We all know the formula: it begins with a dead body, and quickly introduces a motley crew of outlandish characters, each with a motive for murder. The whodunnit genre has been a cultural fixture since the days of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie—the latter of whom has been outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Recently, though, the murder mystery has achieved a new level of saturation, with streaming services offering up a seemingly endless supply of glossy thrillers. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how these new entries are updating the classic form. “Wake Up Dead Man,” the latest of Rian Johnson's “Knives Out” movies, slyly incorporates social commentary, while shows like “Search Party” and “Only Murders in the Building” poke fun at the figure of the citizen sleuth. In our era of conspiracy theories and vigilante actors, there's also a dark side to the archetype. “This desire to be the hero and to follow the logical trails and take things into your own hands—it's very appealing, if you do it right,” Schwartz says. “It's great if you catch the right guy. If you don't, and you catch the wrong one, the entire foundation of society crumbles.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Knives Out” (2019)“Glass Onion” (2022)“Wake Up Dead Man” (2025)“Big Little Lies” (2017-)“The White Lotus” (2021-)“And Then There Were None,” by Agatha Christie “Rian Johnson Is an Agatha Christie for the Netflix Age,” by Anna Russell (The New Yorker)“The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side: A Miss Marple Mystery,” by Agatha Christie“Only Murders in the Building” (2021-)“Nicole Kidman Gives Us What We Want in the Silly, Soapy ‘Perfect Couple,' ” by Vinson Cunningham (The New Yorker)“The Residence” (2025)“The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” by Arthur Conan Doyle“Search Party” (2016-22)“The Hound of the Baskervilles,” by Arthur Conan DoyleThe “Encyclopedia Brown” books“Clue” (1985)New episodes drop every Thursday. Black Friday sale! Use code BLKFRI50 for 50% everything on the Decorating Pages Shop site on Black Friday through Cyber Monday. In this Thanksgiving edition of Decorating Pages, I'm giving thanks for the prop houses and vendors that keep film and TV sets alive.I'm joined first by Fausto from Hollywood Studio Gallery, one of Los Angeles' most important art rental houses. He shares the history of HSG, how he went from “shipping and receiving” to 35 years in the gallery, what changed when clearance rules tightened, and how they curate artwork for everything from kids rooms and hospitals to the White House. Then I talk with Set Decorator Rich Murray (Only Murders in the Building, The Penguin, The Diplomat). Rich breaks down his favorite New York and East Coast prop resources – Newel, Eclectic Encore, Prop N Spoon, State Supply, Gotham Props, Fennec Props – plus the auction houses and antique warehouses in Connecticut, New Jersey, Philly, Hudson and beyond. We talk about sending trucks out for estate sales, using museum collections for cleared art, and how those “one stop” prop houses in LA compare to the patchwork system in New York.If you love set decoration, production design, prop houses, and behind-the-scenes craft, this is a full-on love letter to the people who help us dress sets, solve clearance problems, and keep the doors open in a tough economy.Listen in for shout-outs to Warner Bros, Universal, History for Hire, Advanced Liquidators, Nest, Newel, and many more – and for a reminder of why losing even one prop house is such a huge loss for the industry.Topics:History of Hollywood Studio Gallery and art rental in LAHow clearance really works for artwork on film and TVLA prop houses Kim leans on for everyday sets and period piecesNew York prop houses and auctions Rich uses for Only Murders, The Penguin & The DiplomatEstate sales, antique warehouses, and museum collections as design toolsWhy decorators are genuinely thankful for prop houses

# The Dark Comedy Murder Mystery You Need to Hear AboutIn this captivating episode of TV Reload, host Ben sits down with the creative minds behind Stan Original's razor-sharp dark comedy "He Had It Coming." Creator/writer Gretel Vella and executive producer Chloe Rickard unpack their brilliantly chaotic series that blends feminist perspectives with murder mystery elements. The show follows two unlikely friends thrust into amateur detective roles on a university campus, exploring modern activism, gender politics, and shifting power dynamics through a distinctly comedic lens. The conversation reveals how the show's short, punchy episodes perfectly match the frenetic energy of its characters - two "bad feminists" navigating a murder investigation they're woefully unprepared for. Gretel and Chloe discuss their creative influences, from "Only Murders in the Building" to "Search Party," and how they crafted flawed, authentic characters that viewers can genuinely connect with.## Timestamps and Key Takeaways:**2:30** - The creators explain how the show's format (short episodes) intentionally matches its frenetic tone and energy**5:15** - Discussion of how the murder mystery serves as the perfect vehicle to explore gender politics without being heavy-handed**8:45** - Gretel reveals she identifies more with the character Elise and how viewers will likely see themselves in the characters**12:20** - Creative influences behind the show, including "Only Murders in the Building" and "Search Party"**15:40** - The importance of writing flawed, authentic characters that audiences can relate to**18:30** - How they approached plotting the murder mystery, knowing the killer before laying the clue tracks**21:15** - The creators' hopes for how viewers will connect with the show's themes**23:00** - Behind-the-scenes story about filming in 40-degree heat while actors wore full coveralls and masksIf you enjoy dark comedy with a feminist edge, murder mysteries with depth, or simply love watching flawed characters navigate impossible situations, you need to hear this conversation. A Note From The Host: I've been keeping an eye on Beanie Feldstein and how she's been steering her career since Lady Bird. Now, in her early 30's, when I discovered she was to be one of the latest guest stars on season five of Hulu hit, Only Murders in the Building, I knew it would be great. The television and Golden-Globe nominated actor is also known for her work on Broadway and her singing chops, and I loved hearing her ardently and assertively align herself with her musical side (and how dance has chased her all her life), hear about just how long she's been singing (since a small child), and how a grave problem with her once-gravely voice actually left her speechless---then, propelled her to patiently pursue the passion and skill of hers. On the podcast, Beanie's so passionate about the love she's found and also candid about who she was before. One of the most interesting and delightful things about the conversation you're about to listen to, is Beanie on how much she loves people, and that its central to her creative process. Most known for playing a best friend, how uncanny (or perhaps not at all) when you hear where, and how, and why--- friends and the importance of friendship have occupied her life. Beanie really knows who she is, and its almost thrilling to hear her how she does it. We discuss so much about fashion, a lot about family, working with one brother, and losing another. We talk in great detail, about the many inspiring actors and artists she's gotten to collaborate with. Her future projects are superstars themselves, and there's a charity that many of you might choose to donate to after giving this talk a listen. The gaming room contains a card table with a cleaver-shaped gash and is frequented by a trio of billionaires, one who's missing a finger. But as they dig deeper into the mystery, stories don't add up, the podcast is muzzled, and the killer remains even more elusive. Every Wednesday, we share our thoughts on a newer entertainment property, and currently, that's Only Murders in the Building. Since we missed discussing the show last week, we doubled up this time and covered E8, "Cuckoo Chicks," and E9, "LESTR." These featured some fun scenes, but we're still scratching our heads over the mystery itself. Best to just enjoy the actors and let the plot wash over you. Mentioned: The official OMITB podcast, hosted by Michael Cyril Creighton.Next Wednesday, we'll discuss the season 5 finale of Only Murders in the Building. We'll be back tomorrow with our weekly roundup.
Each Tuesday, we discuss an older entertainment property, and currently, that's Lost. In this episode, we're flashing forward with Hurley, whose post-island life seems pretty similar to his pre-island life, in several meaningful ways. Meanwhile, on the island, the castaways are splitting into factions, making for some interesting combinations. Mentioned: Lance Reddick as newly introduced baddie (? unconfirmed, seems like a safe assumption) Matthew Abaddon.Next Tuesday, we'll continue with season 4, episode 2, "Confirmed Dead." Tomorrow, we'll continue with our discussion of a newer show, Only Murders in the Building.
