Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 103rd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. First, we finally found an apartment and have begun the endless process of settling in and making it our own, furnishing it and transferring our stuff from a storage unit in Bismarck to our new home in Utah. I also took in a book chat with author and fellow podcaster Kemper Donovan of "All About Agatha" promoting the second installment in his ghostwriter mystery series, reviewed in "Ep. 99: Getting Up to Speed" around the 20-minute mark. This set covers discs 1851 to 1875 in my Classic Collection. For my Fuzzy Feature, from Disc 1873, comments on the pilot episode of AMC production "Rubicon," along with my 13th ever "VideoFuzzy the Video" posted here: https://youtu.be/j0quoW7veBo Light set of Cross Connections for this set which tracked James Badge Dale, Mary Lynn Rasjkub, Stephen Root, Iqbal Theba, Rich Sommer, Michael Badalucco, Laura San Giacomo, Jim Beaver, Amber Benson, Sterling K. Brown, Linda Blair, Devon Gummersall and Matt Keeslar. Also highlighted Golden Thread Michael McKeon and Golden Prime Stephen Tobolowsky's appearance in "Radioland Murders" alongside Brian Benben, Mary Stuart Masterson, George Burns, Ned Beatty, Christopher Lloyd, Anita Morris, Corbin Berntson, Bobcat Goldthwait and Larry Miller. In my Classic Collection, comments on the fifth-season "Doctor Who" episode "Amy's Choice" featuring The Dream Lord. Also, Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn and Marty Feldman in "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother," "Radioland Murders," "100 Questions," "Saving Grace," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Persons Unknown." In Video Outreach, I broke into my 10th binder with this set, so I took some time to look back at what turned up in binder no. 9, including President Obama's first term, passage of the Affordable Care Act, and ... I put a few notes together on my long overdue discussion of "Flashforward." Under Book Report, I talk about some of the books I read on my trip to D.C. for Kemper's book tour, including Lucy Foley's "The Guest List." Also, an anthology of short mysteries by contemporary authors detailing new adventures of beloved Agatha Christie creation Miss Marple titled, simply "Agatha Christie's Marple." And on my stop through Chicago I found a fun independent bookshop called "Bookends and Beginnings," and a speculative think-piece called "The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig -- fun!  In What I've Been Watching, I'm still waiting on our stuff to get here, because it will include my VHS-to-DVD dubbers and maybe let me address some issues I've had with my archiving and cataloging efforts. The trip and the move have already delayed my commentary on the second season of "Doctor Who," but I discussed second-season episode "The Story and the Engine" which I found to be confusing. Also, comments on four "My Hero Academia" movie releases, which I watched with Ralph ahead of our move. SPREADING THE WORD! "VideoFuzzy: The Video - Celebrating 100 Episodes!" is posted at https://youtu.be/eWfcCDiOZ2I. Please share as you're able to with anyone you feel might enjoy this production. Putting together VideoFuzzy ep. 100 -- coffee certainly helps!   Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 100th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. This set covers discs 1751 to 1800 in my Classic Collection. I open with a project overview highlighting some of my finds. For my Fuzzy Feature, I encountered the 100th episode of "Bones" that recalled the first case Booth and Bones worked on together. I found a similar story construction in "In Plain Sight," and talked about that one as well. Under Cross Connections I trace Golden Threads Todd Giebenhain and, later, Michael Shamus Wiles. Also, appearances by Amy Acker, Lee Majors, Kathy Najimy, Bryan Batt, Alan Ruck, Stephen Root, Katie Sackhoff, Mark Bergeron, Angela Bassett, Sarah Silverman, Rita Moreno, Dana Delany, Sheryl Crow, Mary Pat Gleason, Marc A. Sheppard, Charlotte Arren, Johnny Broderick, Cyd Cherise, Fred Astaire, Jane Lynch, Olivia Munn and Brian Skala. And under Fond Reflections, love for Michelle Trachtenberg of "Buffy," "Mercy" and "Six Feet Under," and I share some headcanon from an "Angel" chat group I was in. In Video Outreach, I share comments from author and fellow podcaster Kemper Donovan on my review of "Loose Lips," available here: https://bit.ly/3C11ENN Kemper hosts the "All About Agatha" podcast here: https://bit.ly/43j4hnB Then I chat with my sister, Patti Ellingson, about shows we've enjoyed, including "Doctor Who," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Bridgerton" and "Stranger Things." I know I've mentioned my sister's influence on my television viewing different times over the course of this production, and this felt like a fantastic opportunity to chat with her directly. So much fun! In my Classic Collection, I take almost a disc-by-disc deep dive on what I was finding in this set, beginning with a third meet-cute storyline I encountered in this set: the first season finale of "Human Target." Also, comments on "Arrested Development," "The Simpsons," "FlashForward," "Archer," "24," "Caprica," "Community," "Mercy," "Ugly Betty," "Parks and Recreation," "Justified," 2002 and 2005 MTV Movie Award shows, "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report," "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" C-SPAN coverage of the Affordable Care Act, "Breaking Bad," "The Big Bang Theory," "Jawbreaker," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" "Batman Returns," "The Three Faces of Eve," "Sybil," Union activity at The Minot Daily News, "Star Trek Voyager," "Fawlty Towers," "Monty Python's Flying Circus," commercials and music videos, "LOST," "Cougar Town," "Castle," "Fringe," "Chuck," "Broadway Melody of 1940," "Silk Stockings," "V" and "Damages."  Also surfacing in this cataloging effort I found home movies, including a one-act presented at the Carnegie Center in Minot in 2002 or so called "Excerpts." Friends of mine read from books in my collection: https://bit.ly/3DslFO6 It's a bit silly, but if you think of books on your shelves murmuring to one another, that was the idea I was going for. Then, from 100 episodes, I share 100 clips! But there'd only be 99, right? Well, one of the clips I shared referenced outtakes from a "Michael Caine in Space" sketch on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" which, at the time, I had trouble locating. Since then, I was able to locate it here: https://bit.ly/4hnn9XM Enjoy! Finally, in What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I took in Larry Shue's "The Nerd" at the Vernal Theatre downtown, and I shared some thoughts. The company closes out its season with a production of Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate" coming up in mid-April, and we're looking forward to it. Tickets and information at https://www.vernaltheatre.com. The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast
Spreading the Good Works of John Prine to an Ashland, Ky., Coffeehouse Crowd

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2025 3:06

At a coffeehouse in Ashland, Ky., 50 years ago this week, Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen continued their new mission to spread the good news about the work of young singer-songwriter John Prime. As reported in an earlier article here, Charlie and Dave had been listening this this Chicago-based folk wunderkind ever since his 1971 first album. The two, later joined by Flood co-founder Roger Samples, quickly started learning Prine tunes to share and sing along with at the Bowen Bashes and at festivals. The particular song featured in the above music video — one of the oldest audio files in The Flood archives — was only a couple of years old when Peyton and Bowen performed it on a February Friday night at The Catacombs coffeehouse at the Ashland Community College. The SongCharlie and Dave had heard “Please Don't Bury Me” a year or so earlier on Prine's third album, the wonderful Sweet Revenge, The guys were tickled by its sassy irreverence, “a funny song about death,” Bowen commented in his introduction that night in Ashland. In his lyrics, Prine seemed to be reflecting on his own someday-long-in-the-future death: Please don't bury me down in the cold cold ground I'd rather have 'em cut me up and pass me all around Throw my brain in a hurricane, the blind can have my eyes And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size. Then When the Song Became Relevant…The song came under poignant re-examination in the spring of 2020 when Prine became one of the first high-profile fatalities of Covid-19 in the first months of the pandemic. In an interview a few years before that, John noted that he had been 27 when he wrote those jocular lines.“That song was originally about this character I had in mind called Tom Brewster,” said Prine. “He dies but he wasn't supposed to, like that scene in those old movies. The angels have to send him back, but they can't the way he is. So they send him back as a rooster, which is why his name is Brewster.“I ended up trashing that whole part,” Prine added, “and came up with this idea of the guy just giving all of his organs away, and I made a whole song out of that. It's the best organ donor campfire song I know of.”More on MortalityLater in his career, Prine frequently gave death further reflection. In 1975, for instance, Johnn penned “He Was In Heaven Before He Died,” inspired by the death of his father four years earlier. And then decades later for what would become his final album Tree of Forgiveness (2018), he wrote “When I Get to Heaven.”Inspired by his surviving cancer in 1998 and again in 2013, his song, the last track on the album, also will always demonstrate that time did not temper Prine's quirky worldview (or otherworldview): Ain't the afterlife grand? I'm gonna get a cocktail, vodka and ginger ale. I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long. I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl. Yeah, this old man is goin' to town.Flash Forward…. Waaaaay ForwardWe can't whisk you back to that coffeehouse night 50 years ago. But if you'd like the 2025 version of that evening, set your calendar for this Thursday night, destination: Huntington's Bahnhof WVrsthaus & Biergarten, 745 7th Ave.The Flood will be back at this wonderful establishment to play from 6:30 to 8:30. Join us for an evening of good food, good tunes, and even a bit of that good ol' coffeehouse vibe.Meanwhile, More John? Finally, if you'd like a little more Floodified versions of John's tunes, remember that the free Radio Floodango music streaming service has a randomized playlist of some of the band's favorite Prine pieces.Click here to read all about it. You Start Today with Dr. Lee Warren | Weekly Prescriptions to Become Healthier, Feel Better, and Be Happier.

In this episode, Dr. Lee Warren tackles the challenges of maintaining positive habits during the holiday season, a time often filled with stress and triggers. Drawing from his upcoming book, The Self-Brain Surgery Handbook, he introduces two innovative self-brain surgery techniques: the "Five-Minute Freeze" and "Flash Forward to Flashback." These methods are designed to help listeners resist reverting to harmful habits by fostering self-awareness, encouraging reflection, and leveraging neuroplasticity to reinforce healthier behaviors. Dr. Warren also weaves in spiritual insights and scripture to empower individuals in their journey toward resilience and transformation. Chapters 0:16 Holiday Habits and Self-Brain Surgery 2:23 Temptations and Triggers 4:40 Introducing the Five-Minute Freeze 7:33 The Neuroscience of Habits 12:00 Understanding Temptation 14:08 Transforming Your Mind 15:35 Building Discipline with the Five-Minute Freeze 22:55 Exposing Underlying Behaviors 26:37 Flash Forward to Flashback 30:34 Change Your Mind, Change Your Life Key Takeaways The Five-Minute Freeze Pause before acting on a habit to consider its immediate and long-term consequences (5 minutes, 5 days, 5 years). Helps engage the rational part of the brain, breaking the cycle of impulsive, limbic-driven responses. Flash Forward to Flashback Reflect on past instances of indulging in habits to recall negative consequences. Use these memories to inform present decisions and visualize a better future. Neuroplasticity in Action Repeated thoughts and actions create neural pathways that make behaviors automatic. Breaking old habits and forming new ones require intentional effort to "rewire" the brain. Spiritual Foundations Scripture highlights the importance of transforming the mind to change behaviors (Romans 12:2). God provides opportunities to resist temptation, offering hope for lasting change. Quotes from the Episode "Thoughts become things. If you want to change your life, start with your thinking." "You don't rise to the occasion; you fall to the level of your preparation." "Love tomorrow more than you hate how you feel right now." We discuss the common struggle of feeling selfish for prioritizing self-care and how important it is to redefine self-care as essential, rather than indulgent. Chantelle offers insights on how to manage the demands of life without losing yourself in the process, emphasizing that self-care isn't just about bubble baths and candles—it's about sustaining your body, mind, and spirit so you can truly be present for others. Your mother dies or maybe it's your spouse and you're a named beneficiary in the will so surely it's a matter of presenting a few papers and some ID at the relative's credit union and then you'll walk out with a check.Dream  on.When Saeid Kian's father died from pancreatic cancer - meaning there had been time to get his financial papers in order - Saeid assumed it would be straightforward to gain access to his dad's accounts.  He assumed incorrectly.Months went by as he dealt with lumbering, inefficient systems at multiple financial institutions.  These were months of frustration, aggravation and worse.Flashforward to now and Saeid is co-founder of Ribbon,  a San Francisco fintech that aims to help credit unions produce a better experience for heirs seeking to collect inherited assets.Understood what's in it for the FI to make this service smoother: Literally billions of dollars are pouring out of traditional FIs today as a generational wealth transfer of unprecedented magnitude unfolds and the heirs, in the majority of cases, are taking their inheritances to other institutions.Part of the reason they are is that many are fuming with the clumsy, lengthy process that most credit unions have in handling estate transfers.Ribbon makes it better, faster.  It just may stop the money leak and help credit unions hold onto some of this cash. This is a good show about a service I hadn't heard of - you haven't either. And when you hear it you just may want to tie up with Ribbon pronto.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Find out how you can help sponsor this podcast here. BNPL.  When we talked with Bryce Deeney, CEO of Equipifi, about his BNPL focused startup in December 2021 BNPL probably sounded to most listeners like a new alphabet soup and who really cared about it?Flashforward and quite possibly you personally have used BNPL. If you haven't a relative or friend definitely has.  Companies like Aftrpay, Klarna and Affirm are major fintech players. And there are mainstream entrants into BNPL such as AMerican Express and Apple. Here's the question: where's a place for credit unions in BNPL?Know that the big BNPL players are busily making deals with retailers, both online and bricks and mortar. They are disintermediating traditional financial institutions and that means you.Enter Bryce Deener and Equipifi which have been busily creating tools for credit unions to offer BNPL as a payments option to their members. In this show, Deeney tells why a credit union needs BNPL in its arsenal (you don't want to lose members do you?), why BNPL is so popular with so many of us (and it's not just Gen Z by the way), and how BNPL has morphed in just a couple years.Case in point: the majority of BNPL deals now feature interest payments or other fees. Didn't know that? Understandably: two years ago the BNPL pitch was pay over 90 days, no fees, no interest. No more. Money no longer is free and the BNPL providers have morphed.,And take heart because Deeney and his team are working hard to give credit unions a place at this table.Listen up.Like what you are hearing?
